Exercise has no Gender

I wanted to write this post because I think it’s really important for everyone serious about getting in shape to realize that certain exercises are not either just for guys or just for girls. It is so strange that somehow – and I’m not sure how this happened or why – certain marchines and whole rooms at the gym became either more for guys or just for the girls. For example at the gym in my home town the weight room is mostly full of guys and the cardio studio seems to be a women only area. I used to be very intimidated about going into the room with the free weights bacuase it seemed like a boys only club. The girls never went in there – if they were interested in strength training (something else that seems like a male only practice) they used the machines and left the free weights to the guys. These ideas seem related to the myth that if women lift weights they will get big and bulky and masuline (don’t worry – you won’t). I remeber thinking that it was weird to see a guy using the elyptical machines – I’m not sure why I thought this at the time, but it seemed like elyptical machines were feminine…LOL. These strange gender gym rules are really holding a lot of people (women mostly) back from having better workouts and reaching their fitness goals. I have talked a lot lately about how powerful strenth training is for burning fat and reshaping the body. There are all kinds of side benefits from using free weights (see this article on why women should lift weights). To avoid all of these great benefits because of these weird and completely irrational ideas about which exercises are for men and which are for women will hold everyone back from their goals. Most people are interested in loosing fat and reshaping their bodies. Lifting weights is one of the most effective ways to make this transformation happen. Because of these silly ideas about male/ female a lot of girls show up at the gym and park themselves for an hour on the cardio machines and then get frustrated that they are not making real progress despite having spent hours and hours at the gym. This is a huge block to progress that people have to think about and then move beyond. Set all of these silly thoughts aside and put your own fitness first. If you feel uncomfortable at your gym – especially in the weight room, I am putting together an article that will show you how to set up a cost effective home gym that will give you all of the same great weight training benefits – without the expensive membership.

Thank you for this important post, Zuzana! I wish more women would fee comfortable using free-weights in my gym. Maybe if you offered tips on form and free-weight exercise examples, it would help women to feel more capable and able to tackle those free-weights.

Great work, I love this website. You have inspired me to push my weight training days from 3 to 5 times a week. Thank you!

Wow, this thanks for making this great website! You’re progress is really inspiring! I know you said you were going to make an article so maybe you could answer a few questions i have in it? What size of weights do you use? Which do you think burns more calories, more weight/less reps or less weight/more reps? I’m thinking if you had more muscle you’d lose it faster? Thanks! -Amy :)
