Cardio Versus Weight Training – Which one is better for fat loss?

Aerobic training increases the body’s functional capacity to transport and use oxygen and to burn fatty acids during exercise. Aerobic exercise stimulates a series of metabolic responses in the body including: Increased mitochondria density in slow twitch muscle fiber, which results in higher energy production from fatty acids; increase in trained muscle capacity to utilize and mobilize fat, resulting from higher amounts of fat metabolizing enzymes, and increased blood flow; greater development of slow twitch muscle fibers, increased myoglobin content, which acts to store and transport oxygen in the muscles.Engaging in aerobic training can burn up to thousand calories an hour depending on the specific type and intensity of an aerobic activity. Unfortunately this information led many individuals to mistakenly believe that aerobic exercise is the only exercise you need to effectively control your weight. Aerobic training burns calories but does very little if anything to help you maintain your lean body mass during your weight reduction efforts. If you combine only cardio-based workouts together with calorically restricted diet you risk the chance of burning muscle, thus slowing down your capability to burn calories and fat over the long run. Engaging in resistance exercises such as weight lifting, will help you to increase your lean muscle mass, which in turns increases the amount of tissue in your body that naturally burns calories in a resting state. Simply put, bigger muscles burn more calories than little muscles. The best approach for proper fat loss is a balance of sensible nutrition, regular aerobic exercise, and effective weight training that challenges your body in order to affect your basal metabolic rate.

Best,

Zuzana.

For sure I can tell you, working out with weights and doing cardio is a key to hot body. I see a such a big difference in my body just from adding a weight lifting to my routines and not just doing cardio like a hamster in a wheel. I use to do a lot of cardio when I feel like I need to loose weight, but did not realized that I was loosing muscles. And now I love my body like I never did before. There is a lot of people who is skinny, but they have very hight fat % and they don’t have any idea that muscle is a key to fat burning…
Zuzana you do such a good job on teaching people meaning of a healthy body;)))

    Hi Galina,

    thanks

    hi bonbon:)
I love indoor cycle, or eliptical machine. I have a big goal to archive so what I do is a little intense for most of people..
Here is my week of working out..
Morning – carido for about 30min to 1 hour
Evening – warm up for 5 min
    weight lifting on two muscles
and finish with a cardio for about 20- 30 min..
I work out 7 days a week and on those days that I should rest, I do cardio for about one hour, but very light, that I can talk or keep my breath in place.

What really change my body its not only working out like a gold medal champion it’s a eating right. I change my eating habits and eat right before and after work out. Food is a biggest key to your muscles.

When I realized that I need to get back in shape and in a long term shape I start researching in all places. When you set your self a goal you will have all the right answers come in to your hands.
One of them was Zuzana ;)

Z this one is for you;)
I’m going to school and one of mine school body asked me how I’m doing? I told him that Im super tiered and dont have any energy. He told me I should work out. So few weeks go by and I see him again, and he is telling me something changed in me, well I start working out. And here he is telling me
” you should look this girl up, her name is Zuzana, she have most hottest body on the planet” and he told me aobut your site;)

And here Im 25lp lighter, stronger and super motivated.

Setting a big goal, belive in it, get obsessed with it is a key to everything you touch and wanting to reach…

Zuzana what ever you goal in your life you can have anything…

    Hi Galina,

Thanks for sharing your workout schedule to you tho it might be too intensive for me:)
Same as you, i was inspired by reading Zuzana’s website, and i suddenly realized that i need to do weight lifting after reading her sites.

    Hi Zuzana,
I just started to do weight lifting, but i feel so tired after doing those. Is there any problem with that? Also, do i need to take whey protein in order to build muscle mass quickly?

    thanks
    Bonbon

    Bonbon,

make sure that you are following the 1-2-3 nutritional rule, because your body needs a lot of carbs for energy especially if you are participating in strength training. Drink a plenty of water, the importance of water is explained in this article. Protein is very important part of your diet and I wrote an article about Protein as well.
    Best,
    Zuzana.

    Zu,

I just wanted to thank you for all the time you have put into this site. I can see your passion for fitness. I wanted to say that I have been very active my whole life – a true athlete at heart. However, when I got to college 5 years ago I put the freshman 15 on and ever since, have been working hard to get my body back into the shape I was before, especially my endurance level. I have been training hard, and am currently 23 yrs old, 5ft 8, 148 pounds and 20% body fat (healthy %). When I was leaving the gym today, a girl who was working out next to me asked me if i knew good workouts to get rid of love handles and I was very flattered because I believe she approached me because she saw how hard I worked and the shape my body was in due to your great information on this site as well as others. I told her about your site and hopefully shell browse around. I would like to get down to 17% fat and wish I had a Zuzana to work out with! I love having someone to do it with to push me beyond my current limits. Ill keep in touch with my progress. I dont know how long that will take but patience is key!

    hi zuzana,
ive heard that running is quite a good cardio exercise so im interested in practicing it along with skipping.. but the problem is i dont have access to a park where i can run n my neighbourhood rescrits me to( for a couple of reasons). so i was wondering if i could walk or probably run up n down a flight of stairs for like 15 to 30 mins with regular intervals? does that sound too bad (or stupid rather :P)
ive seen a few ppl do it so thought i could give it a shot.. my goal is losing some fat n toning my body..
    thanks alot :)

I have costochondritis and I am not able to lift weights, not even light ones, as my chest and back are always in a lot of pain and are very sensitive. Are there any alternatives to lifting weights?
