Fat Burners: Ephedrine

It can be easy to fall for the allure of a fat burner that promises fast, body transforming results – but the chemicals contained in these expensive miracle pills can often carry a higher cost to your health than to your wallet.

Ephedrine is the main component of the herb Ma-Huang, and is a main ingredient in many hyped fat burners and diet aids. Ephedrine speeds up the metabolism by stimulating the release of adrenaline in the body. Scientific studies measuring the effectiveness of Ephedrine have been limited. It is not clear if Ephedrine use contributes to the break down of lean muscle mass when used to effect overall weight loss.

What is clear is that Ephedrine has serious and often deadly side effects. The FDA has received over 1400 reports of negative side effects associated with ephedrine use. Medical problems have ranged from high blood pressure, irregular heart rate, insomnia, nervousness, tremors, headaches, seizures, heart attacks, strokes and death.

On March 11, 2008 Health Canada (Canadian version of the FDA) issued this warning about Ephedrine:
Health Canada is reminding consumers not to use products containing Ephedra or ephedrine, either alone or in combination with caffeine and other stimulants, for purposes of weight loss, body building or increased energy. Use of products containing Ephedra or ephedrine in combination with caffeine and other stimulants may have serious, possibly fatal, adverse effects Health Canada is advising consumers that these products are not authorized for use.
You can read the full warning here:

The best advice is just to stay away from these types of products and keep pushing your fitness routine. We want you to be fit and healthy.

Best,
Frederick

A lot of fitness stores in Canada still sell Ephedrine under the guise of “for nasal congestion relief”. It is a way around the Health Canada ban.

    Great website by the way.

    Hi,

I go to the gym at 6:30 in the morning and afterwards I have a protein shake. I then go go and have muesli for breakfast. I then go to work and I am in by 10am. At 11 I have a tuna and salad sandwich, at 1 I have a chicken sandwich and then at 4pm I have another tuna sandwich. I leave work at 6:30 and I am home at 7:30. I have dinner with my wife which is usually a good healthy meal. This is my routine each day.

The thing is, I’m getting pretty fed up having sandwiches every day but I don’t want to spend all my evenings at home preparing meals for the following day. The kitchen at work is very basic, only a microwave! Do you have any alternative meals I could have that will give me the protein, carbs and other nutrition needed to ensure that my workouts do not to go waste.

    Thanks,
    Ian

I used to work for a “supplement” company that was a natural version of the ECA Stack (Ephedera Cafeine, Asprin). They made millions every month from their “wieght loss supplements”.

A huge amount of the millions they were earning went back into lawsuit settlements due to the damage they caused. It would usually be 10-20 lawsuits a month. All with the same issue. A doctors note stating that “in my opinion your product caused XXX patients heart issue”. If they would settle out of court and sign a non-disclosure agreement the company would pony up 50K to 250K with out blinking an eye. It would cost about 5-7 million a month but they were making WAY more than that so they were fine with it. The company has now been bought out/changed from what it was.
I have seen the damage to hundreds of people and can testify that long term ephedera use for weight loss significantly increases your chance of severe heart issues.
I can’t disclose the company directly but if you ever used a product with the intent to get into ShapeFast, and get into ShapeRite now, 4Life you might have tried these products in the 90’s.
Many of the other products that this MLM created actually were just vitamins that were helpful. And they have finally removed mahaung extracts/ephedera from their products.

Ephedrine and Ma-Huang have been used in China for millenniums. In China there is no controversy about these natural herbs. They are completely safe IF used as originally directed. They are not supposed to be used for weight loss. The proper use is to help adrenal gland function and aid breathing in asthma sufferers. It should only be taken for 6 to 10 weeks in small doses. I took it because I have a recurring adrenal gland blockage. This is easily and quickly treated with 1 week of Ma-Huang.
Millions of people injure themselves and some are even killed in exercise related accidents every year. Most often because they do something unnecessarily dangerous or over extend their bodies. Exercise is not to blame, its the careless people. If you act stupid, try to take short cuts and don’t measure your risks you will eventually get seriously hurt.

    Hi Zuzana,

Thanks a million for posting this, about Ephedrine. In 2004, my boyfriend and I faithfully committed to the Body For Life program, as we were going to work the program and be healthy together. We were pressured to buy and consume their supplements, one of which was Ephedrine (I forget what their label on it was, but the headlining ingredient was ephedrine). I am incredibly drug sensitive, and while the pounds melted off, my boyfriend and I noticed that my personality completely changed. I felt like I was on drugs, I was shaky and irritable, I couldn’t sleep, and it threw me into a tailspin. I became depressed (!!!) and suicidal, and I felt so anxious.
We wondered if it wasn’t because we were on such an intense workout program, that my body was changing, and with those changes, became a temporary change in my moods.
    Not so.
My boyfriend, while not so drug sensitive, noticed that he was having adverse reactions to the supplements and ephedrine regime we were on, as well. It was scary, for both us, and we couldn’t figure out what was going on.
After my hair started to fall out, and my mood swings and depression increased, we also noticed that I had stopped menstruating! I am a young woman (I’m in my mid 30s), and this was all very scary.
After some research, we realized it was the ephedrine, and we immediately threw it out. We also wondered if the creatine we were on was also an aiding and abetting factor to what was happening, and that too, went into our garbage bin.
A scary conclusion to story was that the ephedrine interrupted my body’s chemistry and menstruation, and only by help from my physician, did my body return to normal again. Finally, 5 years later, my body’s chemistry has returned to normal.
Please think about my story, before you consider using ephedrine for any reason.
