Fitness training: Jump ropes

Skipping is a great way to boost your cardiovascular fitness level and improve circulation. It is an inexpensive, highly portable way you can get an intense total-body workout. Skipping rope is also a real calorie burner; in just 15 minutes you can burn more calories than jogging for the same length of time. Skipping Rope burns about 16 calories a minute – add some moves or speed up a little and you’ll burn even more. It requires more muscle power than you might imagine, particularly in your calves, buttocks, arms and shoulders, especially when you move past basic skipping into more advanced techniques like crossovers, double jumps, triple jumps, one leg at time and backward skipping.

I have incorporated skipping into these fitness workout routines: Hardcore Circuit Workout, Hardcore Workout: abs attack, Summer Fitness: 20 minute cardio and core workout.

Skipping strengthens your muscles and bones, improves your coordination and rhythm and increases your flexibility. Skipping can also improve joint health if done properly. Try to find a surface for your jumping that won’t be that hard on your feet and ankles. Some of the shock absorbing surfaces are exercise mat, outdoor track, tennis court, or wooden floor. Athletic shoes designed for aerobics or cross training are good choices for this type of fitness training.

There are all kinds of different skipping ropes – leather ropes, weighted ropes, plastic ropes, etc. I am using a light plastic speed rope that cost $10. A quick tip for buying the right length of rope is the step test. If you step with one foot on the rope right in the middle, then the handless should be at armpit height.

If you have never skipped before, it might be a little bit frustrating at first before you get the hang of it.  I started to skip last summer and I was really bad at first, but it doesn’t take a long time to get better, so don’t give up after the first or second try.

To begin, bend your elbows, keeping your arms close to your body. Using your wrists, swing the rope. Your arms shouldn’t move. Jump just enough to clear the rope, which should only lightly impact the floor, making a soft little “tat” sound. Jump and land on the balls of your feet, letting your heels just touch the floor. Don’t lock your knees but don’t bend them either. If you keep them “soft,” they will absorb very little impact. Your calves should absorb the impact. This is what makes skipping easier on your knees than jogging.

Best,
Zuzana

  • Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

    HI Shaun, in the future maybe. I am not the best example for boxing.

  • Anthony

    Yea i love ur boxing vids )

  • Anthony

    i think ur very good at boxing

  • jazzy

    Hi there, can you, please make a movie on the different techniques as far as skipping? Cuz I’m not sure how crossovers, double jumps, triple jumps, one leg at time and backward skipping look like. Thx :)

  • Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

    Hi Jazzy, I am not that far yet :) I know how the jumps look like but I can’t do them yet, which is actually nice because it keeps rope jumping interesting enough for me.

    Hey Zuzana!
    I found this site from a chat room of girls talking about weightloss, and i am SOOOO glad. I really want to get serious and lose weight but I have trouble staying motivated. Im on the swim team (practice 3 times a week) and will be playing soccer in the summer, but aside from that, do you have tips on how to stay motivated?

    Hi Suzanna,

    This is my first time on your web site and I enjoyed it very much. You are the only one that really gives a great demonstration of your exercise. I love it, I hate going to the gym especially in the summer.

    I use to be the work out queen until I had a few life interruptions that took me off my focus. I us to weight 125 ponds 2yrs. ago. I would like to get back to that size; I am out of shape right now I would really like to see some changes by the summer. I am 5ft. 2in. I’ve gained 20 ponds and I can’t seem to get it off. Once I get the weight off I want to seriously get my personal trainer certification. Please help. I am 145 pounds and it’s all on the top. I would love to get all the fat off like you. :)

    Thanks

  • Belinda

  • TennisPlayer

    tennis court as a surface?
    I wonder how long do you need to flatten the surface after jumping…

  • Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

    I wouldn’t try to flatten it. I would just run away before some tennis player notice.

  • Jamie

    Hi Zuzana,

    Discovered your website via your Youtube Video. Well done on creating such a great resource.

    I have at last got a serious urge to get back to it and start working out daily, so from tomorrow I am going start!

    I wondered why you use a jump rope with out any handles, just curious but do you not prefer a leather rope with handles just to help create some speed!

    Anyway I am 116KG right now and am 5 11 so I worked out I need to lose at least 20KG. Any advice on how long a program should last in order to achieve this result?

    Don’t worry if you don’t get round to answering this, just keep pumping out the routines and inspiration and I’ll do the work necessary lol!

  • Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

    Hi Jamie,
    My advice is don’t be focused on how long will it take to loose 20kg. Focus on getting stronger and faster. Do you think that after you loose the 20kg your journey is over? If you want to keep yourself in shape, you have to accept fitness as your lifestyle and not just something you do for certain amount of time.

  • Jamie

    Yawwwn up at 5.45am and got started with some exercise (at last).

    Yes your right I have to be more concerned with ongoing improvement than reaching a goal and stopping, thanks for the insight.

    Keep pumping out those exercises!

  • vesna

    i came across your videos on youtube, and then ended up here:)
    i think youre awesome, and i totally love your site.
    very inspiring, thank you:)

    Hi,

    I live in Toronto. I’ve been working out for the last 3 years. I usually work out for 2 hours 4 times pero week+ yoga. I started to do some jumping rope between the exercises and I had to stop it because I started to feel pain in my knees. I have 2 weeks without work out my legs. What did i do wrong? Shouldn’t i do it again?

    Thx.

  • Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

    Any pain or injury should be consulted with your doctor.

    Hi Zuzana!
    Thx for your website. I have, at last, found new abs workout that really works! I’ve been suffering for three weeks but I can already see the results!!
    About ropes, I used to do rythmic gymnastic so I use climbing rope as we do in this sport. It’s a little heavier than a plastic one but not a lot (I can even do double jumps ;)!!). Moreover, it’s solid, very cheap, and you can buy exactly the length that you need (think to make sure that you have enough length to make knots at both ends of the rope, to hold it secure when you skip and burn the ends to avoid that the rope get damaged).
    With rope skipping and a little fitness, I’m in great shape but I still have a problem with my abs and mostly about the lowers ones. Could you give me a tip to work especially these ones?
    Thx for all.

  • Monika

    Hi Zuzana,

    what would you recommend me for the beginning of my exercise? I would like to start with jump ropes, but I don´t know how long I can jump. I have a lot of fat on me, and I would like to burn as much as possible.

    Thank you

  • Mary Liz

    I just wanted to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I am ex military so I can’t say I have never followed a workout routine; but I haven’t in years, and couldn’t figure out how to make my own effective, fun routine I would even want to follow. I used to just take my son bike riding, hiking, swimming everyday in the summer… and snowboarding, sledding, shoveling tons of snow everyday in the winter, plus I worked in a highly physical job so I never needed to work-out. I started following your routines a cpl months ago when I found your site, because I’d had flipped my pick-up truck over a cliff (yes and survived) this past winter, and didn’t do anything much to maintain my muscles due to a neck/shoulder injury for months afterward. I am working on my degree and have a desk job now, but I had been cleared for working out and had two goals in mind. #1 – build muscles to get rid of shoulder/neck pain #2 – get in shape for a season of hiking and biking. The neck/shoulder pain has been gone for over a month YAY!! In the last cpl weeks I went on a 12 mile mountain biking experience with ease… and better yet, I hauled a 45+ lb pack up a hiking trail without once being sore the next day… legs or neck/shoulder, just AWESOME! I am stronger than before my wreck and I am hooked, I started to pick favorite exersises of yours, intergrating them with the jump rope, and tabata to make my own super fun routines that fit into my schedule… I am loving it, so THANK YOU!!

    Hi Mary Liz,
    thank you for sharing your story with us and thanks for the recipe ;) If you want to share how you are combining my workouts and the jump rope, that would be great and I am sure that others my benefit from it.

  • Mary Liz

    Hi Zuzana,

    Sure thing and you are welcome!!

    Today I did a mixed up workout so I’ll share it. *I don’t have a friend to time my workouts, so I count reps instead and try to keep my workouts between 20 to 40 minutes.

    ~After I warmed up and stretched, I did 80 jumps with my jump rope as FAST as I could go, marking it on a piece of paper when completing 80 jumps, until I did 5 sets of the 80 jumps and had them all marked on the paper. Then I started my first set of chest press from your “Rock Your Body” workout #2. I did the 40 reps exactly as you describe in video #2. After the first set I went back to the jump rope for 80 jumps 5 times, back to the 40 chest press, jumps and then chest press again until I had finished 3 sets of jumping and chest press.

    ~Next, I did the same thing with jumping 80 times, for 5 sets and did the “Rock Your Body” #7 40 lunges exactly as you explain in the video #7, I used 8 lb weights. I switched from jumping to lunges for the 3 sets like I did with the chest press.

    ~My last set was again jumping 80 times, for 5 sets and then did the “Rock Your Body” #8 40 wood chops woohoo that was fun!! Again, I did it exactly as you explain how to in video #8. I did them the same as the other two exersises, switching from the wood chops to the jumping in between sets for all 3 sets.

    ~~~~~It was quite the cardio workout, I think I am going to cut back to 30 or 50 jumps for the 5 sets of jumping, and do the remaining 5 exersises from your “Rock Your Body” workout in a day or two. Now that muscles are starting to grow bigger on my body I am not so scared to do more jumping with the rope and lose a little more fat.~~~~~
    Hi, Zuzana!
    I found your web site a couple of weeks ago and I’m so glad i did! I became more motivated to work out. Just that I have a qustion about the rope skipping.. how do u determine the right length of the rope? Mine is always swirling around itself but I’m afraid that if I cut it I won’t be able to do the more difficult exercises later.
    Thanks!
  • http://alinabotica.blogspot.com Alina
    Hy, Zuzana!
    It’s great what you do hear, you just gave me the power to go back to my fitness life stile( i am really out of shape :D, but i’ll get back on track). There is oen thing i wanted to ask you regarding the skipping rope. Can i just jump instead of using the rope, because my house is small and i thing i can get hurt using the rope? Thank you. Have a great day, Alina.
