Fat Burner Hydroxycut – Recalled in Canada and USA

Making news today is this report that the popular fat burner Hydroxycut has been recalled in the United States (see link for video). The FDA is warning consumers to stop using all Hydroxycut products immediately. The FDA has received 23 reports of serious health problems including seizures, cardiovascular disorders, jaundice and liver damage requiring liver transplant.

I noticed that Hydroxycut was still on the shelves at my local drug store in the diet and nutrition section as late as yesterday afternoon, but most retailers have now removed Hydroxycut products from their shelves.

What is important to understand from this is that none of these diet supplements or fat burners are currently subject to testing or regulation by government health agencies like the FDA. These deadly products have been sold in drug stores and pharmacies, health stores and fitness stores under the guise that they are associated with “health” but they are completely unsafe and unproven. In our opinion supplements and diet products should undergo vigorous independent testing by a government health agency before it is released for sale to the public.

The best approach is to avoid all of these chemical cocktails and stick to what really works – a proper diet and exercises that make you sweat and make you stronger.

  • Kristina

This is really disgusting, will this so called “health” industry that markets these products know when to quit? They’re willing to cause great harm to people just to make a buck. It’s shameful.

And Zuzana is right. Did our ancestors need chemical “fat burners” to stay fit and healthy? Nope. It was just a proper diet coupled with movement. When we think of food as !!only!! nourishment (and not entertainment) we will find ourselves cutting back on the things that don’t nourish us, ie: fatty foods, sugary foods, etc. Ask yourself what your body needs (it varies from person to person) and as long as you’re eating a good combination of lean proteins and lots of veggies, you’ll be in tip top shape :)

    Thanks for the warning Zuzana!

It´s really a trick of marketing, i had a friend who used stanozolol, an steroid, and she´s having a lo of health problems right now, that´s onde of ther reasons i don´like gyms centers, there are still a lot of professionals teachers in those places that tell people to use it, even nowadays that we have all this information. And more! some of then even sell those drugs to people, in the most of the cases those drugs are homemade and even more dangerous than the laboratoire´s steroids. Steroids are not for this kind of use, it´s only use in small doses in cases where people has disease that interfere in muscle grow, like AIDS, and others…
I live in Brasil, Rio de Janeiro,it´s a beach city and here everyone wants to be fit, bu most of people want super quick results and doesn´want to work hard, when the summer comes i´s a time counter for the fi body, and this very dangerous temptation surround the gym exercisers!
    (Sry for my english!! =D)
Great to see that people fitted as you, help to inform people abou those dangerous substances!!

  • Zuzana

    dear zuzana,

very true,a balanced diet and regular fitness regieme is the key answer.
thanks to all the videos posted by you.
    IT REALLY WORKS.

  • http://www.hasting.org Richard

Well my ancestors were mostly dirt farmers, and many of them died before they hit sixty. I don’t think “fitness” was very important to them nearly as much as poverty was, until my father anyway. And our grandparents bought a lot of snake oil too, ya know…
On Yahoo answers I constantly see people, almost always women, wanting to know what the shortcut is. One woman wanted to know how to lose 20 lb in 2 weeks when she was having a 20′th class reunion. I suggested liposuction. But truly, we always think that there is a shortcut, some way to “Cheat” our way into the fit and beautiful. It just isn’t so. There is no such thing as a free lunch, and there is no easy way out. Being fit requires sweat, determination, commitment, and self control. If we want to look like athletes we will need to train like athletes. We need to train like it really matters. We need to eat as if our bodies are a temple for the Lord.
As for myself, age 45 male, I am 9 weeks & 22 lbs into a 60 lb drop. I have found the key to my success is to track everything that goes in. I have averaged 1733 calories a day since Mar 4. I workout 4 times a week and I learned everything I could find on the Internet and Youtube. Then I found Bodyrock and Zuzana. I just love what Zuzana is doing, and though my workout is somewhat different, I have found myself trying some of Zuzana’s routines. I love her presentation, and my favorite videos are when Zuzana can barely stand after a workout or a circuit. I really appreciate seeing her struggle through the muscle exhaustion and pain. It isn’t a happy smiley workout. Because, working out is not, as a rule, fun. It is hard work, and it is good for her to demonstrate that results only come when you push yourself to the limits of your muscles.
There are no short cuts, just hard work.

  • Ken

I am a personal trainer and I don’t recommend ANY supplements. If people are eating 5 times a day (with the correct ration of carbs, protein, and fat), they don’t need supplements. Save your money and buy some good healthy food.

  • Michi

hey Zuzana, i know this is unrelaed to this topic but i wasnt sure where to post my question.
I was wondering about how you keep your hair healthy, i get conflicting advise, regular people should NOT wash their hair every day becuase it is too drying, however people who workout Should wash their hair every day becuase the salt in their sweat or something damages the hair near your scalp.I was wondering how you take care of your hair during the week.

  • Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

Hi Michi, this is the first time someone has asked me this question :) I wash my hair every day. I don’t know what the right answer is tho. Common sense tells me that you might want to wash your hair if you get sweaty after your workout :)

  • Ray

I guess I will be the one dissenting voice here.

Hydroxycut has worked very well for some people. That it does not work for everyone is natural; we are all individuals and therefore unique. There are people that will die if they eat a peanut. Should the FDA ban the sale of peanuts to the rest of us. People should use common sense when they do anything, including what they eat. I don’t believe it is the job of the government to regulate everything in our lives. Lets take a little responsibility for ourselves.

  • Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

Ray, you must be one of those people who are selling these products, otherwise I don’t see any logic in your thought.

  • http://www.BodyRock.Tv admin

I’m all for smaller government and less intrusion, but we are not talking about something as specific as a peanut allergy here. The makers of these products have enjoyed almost limitless freedom – they can basically boast any claim about the effectiveness of their products without having these statements verified by independent research or the FDA. They were free to include unregulated ingredients in their products, and use unverified before and after pictures in their marketing and advertising efforts. They also sell this stuff in drug stores and “health” stores to lend their products an air of legitimacy and safety. The manufactures were left alone throughout all of this and anyone who chose to part with their money was free to buy these products over the counter. The FDA stepped in when there was clear evidence that Hydroxycut was damaging people’s liver and from what I understand killing people. They were free to make it and you were equally free to buy it until they crossed a line that made it a public health issue. I for one am glad that there are these types of watch dogs in place.

    Frederick

  • Ray

Zuzana, I am not selling anything and I thought my logic was very clear: I don’t want the government regulating everything in my life. I am an adult. I am able to gather the necessary information about something and make my own decision as to whether I want to use it or not.

Hydroxycut has helped a lot of people and, it has had some bad effects on some people. That’s life. Nothing works for everyone. Different people have different allergies and tolerances. Some people can’t eat wheat gluten or shell fish. So, some people can’t use Hydroxycut. But why should the people that it does help not be able to get it?

I have not heard of anyone dying from Hydroxycut. However, about a quarter of a million people die every year from taking prescription drugs; drugs that have been prescribed by doctors. So much for government regulation.

No admin, they are not free to make any claim they want. There are government regulations about that. You also have the option to sue any company whose claims you can prove are false.

PS: I have never used Hydroxycut!

  • Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

Ray, now I got it – you are a lawyer! :) I just really don’t agree with you that’s all.

  • Ray

Zuzana, it would be a boring world if everyone agreed with me.

  • Robert

Hi Zuzana,i’m still newbie in bodybuilding things and just get started a month, and my question is, do you also drink supplement like whey protein maybe?if yes, what brand do you suggest for the best whey protein in store lately?

    Thx.:)

  • Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

Hi Robert, I don’t suggest supplements for women or guys who want to be slim, lean and toned, because I don’t think that it is necessary. If someone wants to build big muscles than protein is of course necessary and you have to eat a lot of it. Find a protein shake that doesn’t have any artificial sweeteners and flavors. I am using whey protein from Life, but I only sprinkle it on my oatmeal to give it some flavor.

The main thing with these supplements is they do state on the bottle they are not evaluated by the FDA use at your own risk. They might not of known the sever reactions on some people cause it was so new. I dont personally hold it against them. People take things at their own risks. If something hasnt ben evaluated by the FDA id expect people to think to themselves this might not be safe 2 take. I as a bodybuilder know if u want un-natural mass u need 2 take supplements. Weight lifting will only increase your size to your body type. aka me im long and slender so i take supplements to bulk up. I find it does mess with my emotion but dont let it get to me. I can only speak for myself and not others tho.

    sin.,
    Tad

  • Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

HI Tad, thank you for your thoughts on this topic.

  • http://www.myspace.com/untouchable2k CrusaderU2K

To be honest, i really don’t see any point in taking all these pills or whatever that people think they need when working out.

Just do things the old fashion way, eat good, get plenty of rest and work out and drink plenty of water.

  • http://http://www.maxfreak.com/ KK

I’ll go with Ray on this one. All supplements clearly state they haven’t been tested. I find these claims ridiculous when you compare them to say … alcohol.

That said, I’m only taking vitamins, ZMA (I’ll put it in the same class as vitamins), and pure whey & casein protein (from Optimum Nutrition).

I’m not taking alcohol either, I hear it negatively affects one’s Testosterone level, among other things.

  • dk

So the Hydro recall is really dumb any product that works they will re call when Few ppl dont take them how you suppose to when you take diet pills you suppose take 12-15 8oz water they dont which causes harm,to your body out of 12 billion sold 7 cases happened

  • George

I think that this product by muscle tech was mistaken for another product done by Hydroxycut, because I have taken Hydroxycut Hardcore by Muscle tech and until the moment my liver is working perfectly although I have my doubts of these Other products that use the name Hydroxycut as Well you can find them in this link.

http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/hydroxycut/hydroxycut.htm these are the brands I wouldn’t take.

  • joe

well it seems that all these comments are from people who have not tried this supplement. weight loss supplements are not intended for long usage. the person who died supposedly had issues with his liver prior to taking the supplement. i have taken this supplement myself and lost a significant amount of weight and most likely wouldnt have been as commited to my fitness unless i took this product. this product worked. if you look at it this way alcohol has taken more lives than this product and most likely causes more damage on the liver than it also. why not ban alcohol which leads to more severe problems and keep this product that actually promotes a healthy life for over weight people

  • Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

There is not such a thing as a magic pill or fat burner that will help you to loose weight without regular exercise and proper diet. Why these supplements are not intended for long usage? Did you ever think about that? I tell you a secret of fat loss and long life. The secret is called activity, exercise, healthy diet a positive mind.

  • http://myspace.com/untouchable2k CrusaderU2K

Hey Zuzana you said ” The secret is called activity, exercise, healthy diet a positive mind ”

I agree 100%. People is just lazy sometimes, but they have to find a way to get back to normal :)

  • Melissa

Sing it, sister! This philosophy is why I love this website above the rest. :)

  • Gohan

Zuzuna no offense but I personally don’t trust the FDA… they are have banned vitamin B6 and are trying to ban other critical vitamins like vitamin C. They also want to ban other herbal remedies that have not gone under there tests…

I believe in health freedom and that people are responsible for themselves and have the liberty to purchase foods and supplements at their own discretion… Support health freedom… not government control…

  • drew

some people have gotten it right on their comment. ray and gohan for example. the fact that hydroxy cut has caused health problems of any kind is not the issue. the health and well being of americans never is when it comes to the fda. if the fda had a problem with products being sold in america that caused health issues alternate of it’s intended purpose then they wouldn’t put any of the drugs they approve out there. just listen to any one of the phamaucutical ads. it’s called side effects. liver damage, blindness, empotence, stroke, heart attack, possible death. i even heard a high blood pressure medicine that could cause high blood pressure. this recall only means that hydroxy cut didn’t have the right lobbyists in washington. meaning they didn’t pad a politician’s pocket. it’s a sad truth, but hydroxy cut is less harmful then every single product approved by the fda. case in point, cherioes was reprimanded for having the statement, “can lower cholesterol” on their box. because any such claim, if not regulated by the fda, can not be used. it is as ridiculous as anything else i’ve heard.
while the product may not be the most ideal way to lose weight, using aides to lose weight seems perfectly logical. as long as that’s not all one is doing to lose weight.

  • alan

well got to say im on rays side of this,i want a choice good or bad thats my problem not the goverments
and theres a big warning on the label.
to me its like the eat eggs thing one day you can one day you cant, joggings good for you o no wait it will make you fat and damage your knees, ride a bike o no you cant it will cause an imbalance in your knee ligaments and lead to bad knees etc etc etc .QED

and on another point what happed to your old mans vids the 6 months challenge thing.

  • Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

HI Alan, ok I see now your point of having a choice. I didn’t think about it like that before and I guess you are right. People should be able to make their own decisions, you are totally right about that. We took the videos down, because his quest was over and he prefers to be behind the camera :)

  • Karla

I was a user of hydroxycut…. until one day I felt I could loose my life more than I could loose weight.

I’ve never felt like that before… the scariest day of my life.

    This is a great news!

  • Katarina

    Hi Zuzana,

just want to say thanx for your fab website, it really kicked my arse, now all of the excercises are here, I can really focus.

Podla mena budes asi ceska alebo slovena, well done girl. Keep up the good work x

  • Deborah

    Hello Zuzana. Love this site!
I would like your opinion about this:
I’ve been going to the gym since I was like 18, but only for staying-healthy purposes. About a year ago I started to consider to compete in fitness. Now am 26, and I started to train harder this year, and on august I will be competing in a fitness contest here in Costa Rica.
Let me tell you, it is so confusing sometimes to try to follow good advice cause everybody tells you to do different stuff. I try to go as natural as I can without taking any supplements. But for this competition i started to take ATP’s XTRA Creatine Serum with glutamine (Ive been taking it for like 2 weeks), to see if I can gain a little bit of body mass, and I also take protein, but is soy protein. I do this cause I have a slender body, so when I workout I tend to loose weight really fast and I get really skinny, and that is not my goal. So I thought I should use a little extra something to gain muscle mass. I do as you do, I eat every 3 to 2 hours and small portions, and i train really hard. Actually i train like 2 times a day, cause i have to do a fitness routine, so i take gymnastics in the morning, and then i lift weights in the afternoon.
I wanna know what you think about that ATP creatine serum, and if you could please give me tips so I can go very confident into competition.
Well Zuzana I hope you understood everyhting I wrote, cause my mother toungue is spanish so please be patient.:)
    THANK YOU!!!!

  • Chris

Hmmm…my post didn’t seem to take the first time.

“There is not such a thing as a magic pill or fat burner that will help you to loose weight without regular exercise and proper diet.”

Dinitrophenol when taken properly has thermogenic effects that will cause the body to burn bodyfat as fuel without any exercise. It is pretty radical as far as thermogenics and anyone wishing to take something like this should do some research beforehand. As they should with anything.

    Hello Zuzana :),

Well , i like most of the videos but my favorites are the 20 minutes intensive cardio videos , i just never sweat or pant the amount i do in any other workout routine except in tabata protocol ones, they are really fun and very challenging…:) so, only viewing the videos and seeing u training put me on fire and make me wanna compete against my lazy self:D .If i don’t win this contest i will not be upset because i have won your free videos already , thank you for everything :) bye .

  • topher5054

Do you feel the same way about whey protein powders? I try to drink them a few times a day to increase my protein intake.

    Thanks
