The Truth About Cellulite

Ah, cellulite. The scourge and plague of women (and men) everywhere. This dreaded condition is so feared, so hated, and so despised that every major cosmetic and phramaceutical company has managed to make nothing short of several hundred million dollars selling various cellulite treatment creams and products.

Pharmacies are overloaded with larger-than-life cardboard displays, obnoxiously broadcasting smooth, supple thighs and taut rear ends, free of the dreaded bumps and divots that herald the onset of that awful word —cellulite, sounding like a strange futuristic product nobody wants and needs, reminding us of a jiggly, jello-like substance that creeps up and attaches to the legs and body, like some kind of alien visitor of unknown origin.

WHAT IS CELLULITE?

Dramatics aside, just what is cellulite, anyway? It’s something that happens naturally, and has nothing to do with whether you are skinny or not. After puberty, your skin cells change. Due to complicated hormonal factors that have not yet been fully understood by science, various things happen to fat buildups under the skin, and this can create cellulite.

Look at wikipedia’s description, cited from multiple sources: “the causes are poorly understood, and may involve changes in metabolism and physiology such as gender specific dimorphic skin architecture, alteration of connective tissue structure, vascular changes and inflammatory processes.”

And hormones contribute to all of this, but again, there is no scientific consensus suggesting that one hormone is entirely responsible for the formation of it.

In other words: it can — and probably will — happen to anyone. So what can we do about it?

WHY THE CREAMS DON’T WORK.

Here are three fundamental points that you need to remember, the next time you see an advertisement for a cellulite treatment:

Number One: There are no published reports in the scientific literature showing that any cellulite therapies work.

Number Two: In an interview with the New York Times, Dr. Molly Wanner, an instructor in dermatology at Harvard Medical School and an author of a 2008 evidence-based review of existing treatments, asserted, “At this point, there is no outstanding treatment for cellulite.”

Number Three: Dr. Michael F. McGuire, a clinical associate professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, confirmed that “realistically there is no cure for cellulite.”

Really? So all those creams are a scam? It can’t be true — dozens of fancy companies are selling more and more expensive creams that really do promise to get rid of cellulite! How could they possibly be scams? Wouldn’t the government have shut them down by now?

Here’s why: those creams do work, for a couple of days at the very most,  but probably just a few irritating hours. They cause your skin to tingle extensively and tighten up superficially, which temporarily reduces the appearance of cellulite. Then they wear off. That’s it.

But what about all those claims that the creams attack the underlying causes of cellulite, the fat structure, the skin cells? Nope. Like any cream, they are absorbed into the layers of your epidermis, and that’s it. They don’t go to work on your fat cells, changing and altering the way your skin is structured. That is 100% junk science, but it’s amazing how often the claim is made. What feels like a tingling sensation is just that, and nothing else.

No cream, no pill, no complicated deep massage technique is going to get rid of your cellulite. There is no cure for it.

However, there are things you can do in order to reduce those underlying factors that cause cellulite. You guessed it — exercise and a rational, healthy diet!

THE ONE AND ONLY WAY TO COMBAT CELLULITE.

That’s right: there is only one real way to combat cellulite, and we highlighted it in this article right here. You need to exercise, to reduce the amount of fat on your body, and to build lean muscle (oh, and to do that, you also need to eat right, too).

Here’s the thing: you’ve probably heard that there’s no way to ‘choose’ where your body is going to lose fat from. This is partially true: if you do cardio, and do it specifically for fat loss, it is pretty much random as to where that fat might melt away first.

But when you add in weight training, and when you begin to build your lean muscle, you are targeting specific areas on your body. These will tighten up the more you work them out, and are the only real way to work specific zones that you want to improve.

With cellulite, it’s the same thing: even ‘super-skinny’ people have fat on their bodies (as we all do), and are at risk for developing cellulite like anyone else. Just because someone is super-skinny doesn’t mean they’ve got any lean muscle built up. The fat cells could just be minimized, almost-invisible, because the overall body weight is rather low. But trust us — they’re still there, and still susceptible to cellulite.

No matter what your weight might be, don’t be swayed by expensive creams, special treatments, and complicated massage. And don’t think you need a crash diet and 4 hours of cardio per day in order to lose it either: if you can somehow survive on a program like that, the cellulite will still be there at the end of it.

Instead, start concentrating on routines like our Butt and Abs workout, or our Lower Body Workout, and integrate weightlifting into your exercise as soon as you can. Lean muscle is the #1 way to combat cellulite, and the more time you spend on that (and less on ineffectual treatments), the more amazing results you’ll see.

Best,

Frederick

    Hi Frederick (and Zuzana:)),

I have to agree with everything you said in this article, I learned about it from my own experience:(
I got it when I was 16, even though I was always skinny, it developed on my but, not a lot of it but still, it was there and I hated it. I tried every cream, pill and treatment that I could get but even when I was anorexic and really skin and bones it was still there. No cure. I always excersised, mostly hours on the treadmill but it survived, and I finnaly gave up hope. When I started weight lifting and following Zuzanas programs my whole body changed shape, I have muscles (small but I”ll get there!!!) now, my posture changed, my attitude and now that I started clean eating and drinking 3 l of water a day I can finnally say that the situation dramaticly changed, it is still there but less visible and now I have to squeeze the skin with my hands to see the lumps, before it was visible without squezing. So I guess I would just like to add that water is also very important.

Very good article, so true, no pills and creams can help to get rid of cellulite, just hard work and proper diet.
Thank you guys for motivation and support, keep up the great work!!!

    Luci

Not that I want you to give away any secrets but, did Zuzana ever have cellulite? It’s obvious she doesn’t now! It’s hard to imagine her as anything less than perfect ;)

  • http://www.bodyrock.tv/ Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

Hi Brynnae, I don’t have a visible cellulite anymore, but I used to and I used to buy creams and I went to different clinics trying to fight it as well. Then I would go home and eat one liter of vanilla ice cream :)

I’ve always had smooth skin but after graduating from college and getting an office sedentary job I started to develop cellulite under my but in the back of my thighs. I was 30 years old. Now, after three years of sedentary lifestyle, I have it all over my body even in places you’d never think one can (in the bicep area and around the ribcage). My favorite foods used to be (among others) fried chicken, pizza, cheeseburger, cheesecake and lots of coffee. When I used to have smooth skin, I didn’t eat any of these foods, I didn’t drink coffee and I was always moving (running, swimming, I had a job where I walked a lot etc.). So my guess is that it comes from no activity, fat in foods and toxins from coffee.
Of course I’m exercising now and slowly weaning myself from those poor dietary choices though my love for coffee persists. I’m happy to have discovered this site because it is helping me to get rid of fat+cellulite. I’m glad to hear that Zuzana went through the cellulite phase too because it gives me hope to have such beautiful body as hers one day if I really stick with my healthy lifestyle.
Zuzana, what foods were you eating when you did have cellulite? Or what do you think contributed to the fact that you did have it so that we know what to stay away from? How long did it take you to get rid of it?
    Thank you,
    Nicki.

  • Mary

Hey, thats true. Creams do nothing.

  • Gina M.

I have had cellulite ever since I was a baby! And I’ve been fighting it ever since I was a teen (I’m still only 21 years young ;)) I only ended up having more :p

Eating right is one of the things that helps me most (cellulite is less visible) Exercise makes my body look more toned, and, unlike failed diets that only made it worse, exercise motivates me because it makes me feel better (I look fairly fit and it also has an influence on my mood.)

I don’t have much cellulite anymore.

I started Zuzana’s workouts not too long ago and the eternal cellulite on my bottom is starting to go away :D

  • Margarita

Thank you, Zuzana for being honest and sharing personal information about you! It is really inspirational to see what you have done with exercise and a new lifestyle! I just hope I can do this – be so persistent and not dive up until I reach the goal weight and be fit. Nobody supports me :) They are scared I am anorexic again. And the struggle is really hard since I am fighting both anorexia and bulimia. Your site sometimes saves me from being severely depressed.

Thank you again, for making this web site a more personal place. :)

  • TS

Even when not having Cellulite, it’s good to get rid of the body fat. Body fat stores all kind of bad stuff what can result in illness) waw hany

  • Irene

I have been thin my whole life then when I got a sedentary job after finishing school, the cellulite started. Now after having a baby, it’s even worse. I just started reading up on your website and I started doing circuit training. I will also start doing your workouts in btwn, so hopefully this cellulite will go away

  • Rita

My mother has cellulite all over her body, so I guess it is partially hereditary. However, I noticed my cellulite only after I got computer with internet connection at home:) My point is — I truly believe that correct BLOOD (and lymph) FLOW is crucial = healthy metabolism. And that means EXCERCISE & DIET & MASSAGE. No pointless computer, tv etc. (sedentary lifestyle).

At least that works for me:)

  • Anca

Can anyone tell me how do I download or from where to buy this videos that Zuzana was so nice to post it here for us for free? • Adrienne

I used to be the cellulite Queen and I have had a magical reduction in cellulite by:

    More lower boy exercises
    drink more water
    eat clean and often
get enough Essential Fatty Acids through nuts, fish, seeds (makes skin soft and strong)

I am so happy that I will be in a 2 piece bikini with all my bun parts hangin’ out come next summer!

    LOL!

great article, very well explained. So many people complain about cellulite and they fall for all the hype about creams and lasers… but none of it works because it doesn’t address the underlying problem. Being fit and healthy, and having a low body fat content hides the underlying problem (permanently… unlike the creams and such)

  • Sarahi Cali

Cellulite doesn’t really exist. It is just another word for fat (adipose tissue) invented by today’s society to get women to be even more insecure about their weight. Its just like the article says “It’s something that happens naturally, and has nothing to do with whether you are skinny or not.” You can’t really get rid of it unless you don’t want a butt and of course exercise works but it all mostly depends on your genetics.

  • Mimi

Your workouts are amazing. I fall into the slim category. ive always been slim, but not fit. So i started working out. i was just wondering, what should i focus on more, lifting weights for my arms and legs or just cardio

  • Micaela

Hi Zuzana! Let me first say that I find your website absolutely inspiring. With regards to cellulite, I’ve also experienced its reversal, though it has been mostly through diet– I went from eating lots of pizza, dairy etc etc, to eating a lot of fresh veg, which I mix with sprouts and make healthy ‘cover-up-the-sprout-taste’ dressings for: my favourite at the moment is organic apple cider vinager with ground up flax and/or sesame seeds, plus other goodies like chopped up organic tomatoes. An important point that I found out about cellulite, and which someone else touched upon in your comments, is that fat stores toxins. The guy who commented on this said that one should get rid of cellulite because its fat and thus stores ‘bad stuff’ (toxins and so forth)… That fat stores toxins is true– fat cells are 1 of the most ‘inactive’ things on our bodies–that’s why they consume such little calories and are hard to get rid off! But they play a very active role: aside from insulating our butts from the cold (which we don’t need if we have a heater), they isolate toxic stuff that we consume from other more active parts of our bodies, like our vital organs. Fat is there as another way of protecting us from getting poisoned. This means that cellulite is not just about calories, but more often about the quality of food people are eating. One can be in calorie deficiency and still accumulate cellulite fat, if our body is trying to manage the rubbish that we do ingest by wrapping it up in further fat to store it away. This is why clearing our diets is so important–removing toxins stored up ALLOWS our body to give up cellulite fat, as its role of protector becomes obsolete.
Thanks for a great website and regards

  • Kim

    Thank you so much Zuzana!!!!!

I’ve spend over 500,- Euro for Endermologie therepy, last time I spend 450,- Euro for a vibration machine to help my legs get more blood in them.
Yet both haven’t helped me from my horrible cellulite.
(although they both felt very good ;) and still having a good feeling on my vabration machine haha)

My only problem would be the food. I’m still living at my mothes house and don’t have a job to get myself all the healty stuff. I spend allot of money on my hobby (costume making)
I have to eat what’s there and have boring lunches at school too -_-

Yet thanks to your words I’m not discouraged. I really going to look forward to buy some extra stuff so I can work hard on it!

    Thank you Zuzana -x-

  • rae

Frederick, great article… Please do an article like this on Stretch Marks!!! I really do appreciate your effort & hard work. Thanks.

  • Agata

I also don’t believe in creams.
    It’s a waste of money.
Workouts, Workouts, Workouts and again Workouts!

  • AnnaSirena
