Fitness and Your Sex Life

GET FIT, AND HAVE BETTER SEX — HOW EXERCISE HELPS IN THE BEDROOM

We talk a lot about fitness on BodyRock, and lifestyle is a huge part of that. The better you live, the better you exercise — it’s all connected. And there’s no reason to exclude what goes on in the bedroom (or elsewhere) from that — so let’s talk about it!

We’ve heard, like you have, that fitness gives you amazing benefits between the sheets — that by exercising regularly, you’ll notice a serious improvement in both the quality of your sex life and your sex drive in particular.

It’s pretty difficult to find someone, married or single, committed or unattached, who doesn’t want this. Increased sex drive and better performance, especially for couples who have been together for a long time (but for anyone, really), is a great thing to have, and if it’s really true that exercise can do all these things — we want to know about it.

So: besides the anecdotal chatter about ‘bedroom gymnastics’ — does fitness really improve your sex life?

YES INDEED, IT MOST CERTAINLY DOES

The research out there confirms it, but not always in the way you’d expect. It’s a little less about the straight empirical benefits of exercise, and more about the great things that happen between your mind & body when you start working out.

Inevitably, the more you exercise, the more your body image improves. This counts for everyone — men and women alike. The better your workouts, the better the results, and the better your self-image. And if you feel really good about your body, it’s inevitable: you’re going to have better, more frequent sex. It just works.

But hang on — is it all about the mental connection? Well, no: not exactly. As you’re about to see, there are plenty of physical explanations as to why fitness equals great sex.

THE GOOD, PHYSICAL STUFF TOO

Endorphins. It’s a known fact that mood-improving endorphins get released when you work out, which pull down your stress levels (excellent for a kick-ass boudoir session) and also release those ever-important hormones into your bloodstream and up to your brain. So that increased desire for mind-blowing sex isn’t just confidence you’re feeling — it’s a natural high, too.

Your stamina gets better. While sex is about lots of things, being able to perform at a consistent level for a good amount of time makes it extremely enjoyable to both partners. When you’ve got the strong, consistent energy that comes from a high overall fitness level, it’s just far easier to have great sex.

Blood flow increases. Regular exercise means your body knows how to distribute blood more evenly and more efficiently — to every part of your body. That means more arousal for both sexes, and — as research shows — more consistent orgasms for women. That’s never, ever a bad thing.

You know your body more. If you spend a good amount of time exercising during the week, you’ll simply feel your body more. If you’re just starting out, ask anyone who works out regularly — being in full possession of our bodies is one of the best benefits of working out. Since sex is better when you can really sense yourself, it naturally follows that exercise is the best way to pull that off.

TAKE IT EASY

Before you rush to the bedroom and start tearing those clothes off, just keep one thing in mind — if you’re really going for it, and exercising to the absolute maximum of your capabilities, you might be too tired to have sex. If this becomes a pattern, especially after you’ve been working out for a while — change your routine.

Being too tired for sex, which is one of life’s great pleasures, is no good, and being consistently tired for it means you’re likely over-exercising. Make sure you draw a distinction between intense exercise, and excessive exercise.

Yep, we provide some pretty intense workouts on this site. Research proves they’re some of the best for improving your bedroom fun, as they work dozens of muscle groups and don’t drain all your energy reserves — but anything taken to a heavy, heavy extreme will have unforeseen consequences. So don’t overdo it, and in your pursuit of a great body, remember to stay sensible and keep your life balanced.

Best,

Frederick

    Josh,

you must be new to the site :)

  • Sam Rav

Josh, may we direct you to the big red cross in the corner? ;]

But yeah, I’ve had a few sexual partners, but the one which was the best was the one who worked out. I don’t need to explain why, as Zuzana and Frederick already did it justice, but one thing that wasn’t mentioned is that is helps…down there too, for both sexes. I don’t think I need to elaborate what I mean. ;]

Terrific site. Keep up the brilliance.

In your video to the beach you used a nikon camera, can I ask what kind of Nikon it was and what kind of lens you used? And your workout videos are amazing, I am in the US Army and I lead physical training in the morning. I used some of your excercises and trust me they were hurting and thats a good thing. Love you and keep bringing the pain!! Mike

Yapp it’s true … Regular exercise will improve ur blood circulation in a lower body.. That results in a better erection and a good sex life ..

  • http://www.payingpeterback.com Lewis

This is so true. Prior to having kids we were very active both in the gym [and the bedroom]. Sex was definitely better. Ironically, that lead to children! While they’re our greatest joy, children require a lot of attention.

We’d let ourselves fall down on the priority list. After nearly 7 years, that’s taken a toll on our body and mind. Our oldest is almost 7 and the youngest will be 3 this year. We feel we can shift more focus back towards ourselves. On top of that, I want to be active with my kids. Nothing worse than getting a look of disappointment when you say you’re too tired to do something. =/

So, at the start of the year we signed up to a local gym near work (we work at the same company). We are now using our lunch our to burn calories instead of add them back on. I think our bodies are in shock! :)

In just a little over three weeks worth of work I already feel the difference. We still have a long way to reach our goals but it’s nice to have fun along the way!

  • Mikaela

Hey Zuzana, I enjoy watching your youtube videos. You are so inspirational and gorgeous. I love how you’re muscular and fit, but still have a feminine body. I am an ex-gymnast and cheerleader however, and got big bulky muscles. I had a poor diet back in high school and ate a lot and consumed a lot of calories. Two years after I stopped cheering and gymnastics, I am getting back to the gym again just doing plain cardio and reducing my calories to about 1500 a day. I haven’t added weight training because I am afraid I am going to bulk up again. What’s your advice on this? If I’m at a calorie deficit do you think I am going to build muscle like I did again? Should I weight train, but lower my calories more than I have? Thank you so much zuzana-! -Mikaela

Mikaela – we have an article on this called “Are women holding themselves back?” Look in the fitness tips section :)

For me it is true being out of shape made the bedroom a nightmare.

When I hit max density for me, I had a low sex drive, and I had no stamina. That doesn’t cover the psychological issues dealing with self esteem. Now that I train regularly, have lost a significant amount of weight I am back to the guy I was before I gained the weight.

  • Ese

You’re on point 100% My husband and I work out together and I think that’s the secret to our success, both in the bedroom, our professional careers and as an individual all together!

  • Reuben

Sexual endurance, is the word that comes to mine with exercise.
My wife does exercises like Zuzana, while I have to be on the move so I hike over three hundred foot hills through the woods across creek bottoms and back. Steep enough to need all four to climb.
    Love all your videos.
You two make a great couple, your funny and loving play will carry you a long ways.

Hi from Mexico Zuzana. My wife and I wanna thank you for all your advices and great videos. i have a question. What is your opinion about protein powder? Does it really work? How should we take it?

    Thanks goregous

  • CurlySue

    Hello Zuzana,

i have to say that i came across your website by total accident and i cant help checking it everyday. you inspired me to change everything about my life and workout habbits…

4 yrs back i used to be a bit chubby and now am in good shape (at least that what everbody tell me)

but i still need to tone up and build a tighter body esp. my abs.

i get upset because the easiest excersice for me is jogging on the treadmill and i can do it for long, however, it s getting my legs to be really slim yet am not losing that much fat around my stomach.

is it possible that you can give a fitnes program that doesnt depend on jogging for warming up and most of the excersises just for the abs.

how long you think it takes to get a good toned up abs?

    thx zuz

    u r awsome:)

  • MOMO

hey zuzana i wanna ask u somethin ? ive been workin out 4 like 2 years now n im using whey protien , creatin n im feelin ripped n muscled but its not shown as ripped as u like ur abs 4 instance , should i use a fat burner like twinlab ripped or wat should i doo ? plz help cuz i gt depressed of this .
