Zuzana’s Tooth And Calypso’s Cave
First – a big heart felt thanks for all of the caring and supportive messages. I’m taking on the job of today’s post because Zuzana is resting.
Zuzana had a really rough night last night – she was in a lot of pain which kept her from sleeping which as everyone knows just plain sucks. When we woke up this morning we decided that enough is enough, it was time to get her to a dentist ASAP. We found a clinic in Victoria that could take her at 430 pm, so she spent much of the day resting until the appointment. I have to admit that I was pretty worried about her because the right side of her face was starting to look elephant mannish – puffy and swollen like Marlon Brandow in the Godfather. Zuzana is a trooper and a tough cookie, but I could tell that the incessant pain was starting to get to her. We took a bus into Victoria and after a short hunt through some side streets found the dental clinic. The tooth that was causing all the pain was a back wisdom tooth that appears to growing in side ways (ouch) in a spot where there is no room (double ouch). The doctor spent some time cleaning around the effected area, which offered some relief, and suggested that the tooth be pulled. Something about it being a good idea to have problem teeth pulled before the age of 30, at which point the jaw bone can become more dense and the procedure can get more tricky. Zuzana has a few years before that will become a concern, but who wants to go on with a dodgy tooth that can flair up at any time? So the long and the short of it is that she will be going back next week to have it pulled. She already feels much better, and some of the swelling has gone down. She explained to me after over a coffee, that as soon as the Doctor told her that it was nothing serious and that she was not going to die from her tooth ache she immediately felt better – good enough to try and bite into my stake sandwich (ouch again).
So the bottom line for everyone today (myself included) is that you have a pass on the workout – enjoy your day of freedom, because Zuzana is already feeling better and planning tomorrow’s workout routine to make up for the fact that we all got to sit on our asses today. If you really want to brown nose you can go back to one of the earlier circuits or one of the routines on the workout page, but don’t think that will save you from what she is cooking up for us tomorrow.
Until then we thought that we would post the pictures from our active rest day this past Sunday. For our ARD we decided to go on a hike to Calypso Cave – the place where Calypso the sea nymph imprisons Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey. We set the pedometer before we left in our Ipod Nano (which is shaping up to be our favourite new gadget) and it recorded that Zuzana took 20,637 steps in 5 hours 32 minutes and 21 seconds round trip. I’m not sure how accurate that this is, but it also registered that she burned 702 calories – not bad for active rest.

Starting off on our hike – there are a shortage of side walks on Gozo island, so we walked along the top of the stone walls as often as we could to avoid the crazy drivers. It was a bit like walking on the edge of a racetrack.

There were so many places that gave us such a warm feeling…

After 4 hours of hiking we finally caught sight of the north coast (we took the really really long way around).

These are cactus fruits. Where I come from you don’t eat road side fruit, but Zuzana had no problem gobbling them down.

This is the view of the sea from inside Calypso Cave. We climbed down into the cave and found a bunch of disappointed Italians who I think expected to find Calypso still lounging around in her garter belt – they were all saying “niente, niente.” While Calypso’s interior decorating did leave a bit to be desired, the view of the sea was incredible.

Just under the cave we found this abandoned mansion over looking Ramla Bay.

It must have remarkable in it’s time. I could image these grand parties in the 1920′s with men in tuxedos and women in their evening dresses. It was like being inside The Great Gatsby.

At the end of the 4 hour hike, walking along the beach and seeing the waves crashing in the distance was best reward for our tired feet. The air was so fresh and clean, it just swept away every tension from the whole week. By the time we reached the beach we only had about an hour of day light left – we really hustled back – cutting across country and through a deep valley – racing against the setting sun. We made it back in 1 hour!
