Killer Cardio – Race to the Top

Hi everyone :)

I really wasn’t in the mood to do a regular workout at home today. I needed to get out of the house and get some fresh air, so we took a bus to Victoria and decided to find a hill that we could use for our cardio. Frederick wanted to film the whole thing and I thought that he was nuts, because I couldn’t imagine him running up the hill and filming at the same time. I was really surprised that he was able not only to run up way faster than me, but that he also managed to squeeze out a pretty steady video and make me look like a wimp all at the same time.  Did you notice his geeky comments? :) hahaha. Ok, I will try not to tease him too much.

The hill we ran up was really steep and in stretches the ground was uneven, full of loose stones and difficult to climb. Our Nike Shox’s were not the best choice for this cross country terrain. In the future we are going to pay much closer attention to our choice of foot wear.

The cool thing about this workout is that every location you choose will have its own set of natural built in challenges that will keep you moving and responding with your body differently every time. This cardio hill climb was so intense and so much fun that I was laughing my head off :) I realized that it’s one thing to do squats, lunges, and mountain climbers at home on your exercise matt, and it’s something else to have to use your strength, speed, agility and coordination – all of the functional skills that it takes to do something like run up a hill. This type of workout is a great way to round out your training and have a blast at the same time.

We managed to do one more round up and down and by the time we were finished we were soaked with sweat and very hungry. Let us know what your plans are for this workout – it would be great to hear some ideas for the next time.

Have a great workout,

Zuzana

    Hi zuz
The best part of your cardio was the view and the nature, it refresh the soul, any way for the last video i wolud tell some advice, cuz i,ve been climbing rock like 15 years, and i love your exercises for the streching, and the resistance are to similar, the best advice for climbing rock is keep your arms and hips and any move close to the wall, it reduce your weight like 40% less, that is the basic for have a nice technique, if u want, we make training boards here in mexico for many places, we can send you one free.

    Hi Fredrick and Zuzanna:)

Thank you for sharing your video. Unlike your workout, I had a challenge ealier this year (April 18th 2009)where , I decided to challenge my self to the CN TOWER Climb for WWF. The CN Tower has 1,776 stairs(144 Flights). My finish time for the climb at a steady pace not running was 19 mins 56 seconds. I trained in my building for that event. My building has 18 floors and I climbed up 200 stairs 9 times to match the CN Tower stairs..but built up over time. I started going up and down three times. As the event got closer I built up the intesity to 8-9 times up and down. I just thought that I would share that with you. The view from the top of the CN Tower was priceless just as the one in your video.

After seeing your video, I decided that i would share my story with you. I didnt want to see the stairs anymore after the CN Tower climb which i still take to my apartment(6th floor )…but haven’t gotten to the top. In that case this will be my workout since i can’t find anyhills in the city of Toronto nearby and plus its cold out now…so on that note i am gonna take your advice and use the stairs as my training for tommorrow.

I have been spreading the word about your website and I will be anxious to see you workout in a Tuxuedo..

Thank you and keep the videos coming….great job..

    Love from TORONTO

This was by far the best video ever! So funny!
I am more of an outside worker-outer so I can totally relate to this.
In fact, instead of going to the beach for spring break last year, me and my boyfriend went to the Guadalupe Mountains and just climbed our little hearts out. :)
This was awesome. Please do this again.

  • Nay

Other people’s laughter is so infectious! You guys are absolute sunshine for me this morning, I was laughing with you while watching the footage. Well done on your hike :)

  • PEG

awesome! luv it ! so fun when you two bring us on journeys. Great to hear Fredricks voice and amazed he did as well as he did with his camera and mic? his equipment must be awkward. Thanks for the laughs U two! my work out was rather boring today compared to yours, did legs and abs, free weights mostly at gym.

  • Carolyn

Terrific inspiration to hike Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas, just outside my door!

I wanted to share my variation of Zuzana’s breakfast cake. It’s made completely with oatmeal due to my gluten free diet.

1 1/2 gluten free baking mix or all purpose flour
1/2 cup xylitol, agave nectar, sugar or sugar substitute to taste
    4 t. baking powder
    1/2 t. salt
1/2 c. almond, soy, coconut or other milk
1 apple and 1 carrot, peeled and grated
    1 egg, well beaten
    2 T. butter, melted, or 2 T. oil (coconut)
    Cinnamon to taste
2 c. cooked (leftover, chilled)oatmeal, steel cut or regular oats
    optional: Nuts

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Butter a round or square 8″ cake pan. Combine dry ingredients together in small bowl. Mix in grated items. In a separate bowl, stir the egg, milk, and butter into the oatmeal. Stir until well blended. Combine the two mixtures and mix well. If adding nuts, sprinkle on top and press slightly into batter. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out dry when inserted into the center.

Dry and wet ingredients can be prepared the night before.

Nice!! I love running up hills! I did that yesterday! Not quite as steep, and my terrain was redwoods, hopping over fallen branches and rocks. Loved hearing Frederick — when will we see him working out?

By the way, there’s a podcast called Dr. Fitness and the Fat Guy — they interview people in the fitness world. I told them they’ve got to have you on their show…..

thank you so very much for all of the workouts and inspiration!

    Hi Zuzana,

Aww, you both look like you are having so much fun!!! Thank You for sharing your experience with us, it’s so beautiful!!

I doubt you could get bored doing what you are, but if you do… You could take your jump rope at the bottom of the hill and each take an end. The first person sprints up the hill until the rope is long and tight then they stop, once the first person stops the second person runs ahead (up the hill) until the rope is tight. The first person goes again, and then the second. It’s fun and it requires team work which is a blast. Also, you are more inclined to run harder because you know you are getting a break soon, and because the faster you run the less of a break your partner gets :D. So fun.

I want to go cross country skiing out of our back door this winter. It is snowing and frozen here right now, not enough snow for cross country skiing yet…soon though. :D I’m going to work on my pull-ups tonight, tomorrow I have a nice treat of hot yoga so I figured if I am sore the heat will really help.

  • candie

I love it..! The workout & the view of Victoria. How long did it take to get to the top?

  • Nata

Is there something wrong with your site? there are no comments here. Anyway, I’m looking forward to running up a hill today. I have it all picked out and everything:)

    Hi Zuzana

I posted a comment yesterday but there seems to be a problem as there are no longer any comments on this post anymore?
I wanted to know if you have any tips on how to keep hunger away mostly in the evenings? I have stopped smoking for 9 weeks now and i seem to be fine during the day by eating my small meals but at night time i get REALLY hungry! I am following all of your programmes (and loving them)! SO I really dont want to undo all the good i am doing my eating more at night!! Please could you give me some advise? Would really appreciate it…
    Thanks
    Liz

    Ey Zuzana!
Love the website, you are my fitness guru! I visit your page everyday, eventhough I’m from Spain and my English is not that good :). I have a question I would love that you response, please.
What are the best exercises for the lower abs Britney used to have in her video I’m not a girl not yet a woman?? Here is the picture if you dont know what I mean:
    http://www.gobritney.com/displayimage.php?pid=32078&fullsize=1

Im dying for those abs since I saw the video.

It is incredible you have that body with only 15 minutes of workout per day. But I’m just a little worried about getting huge muscle and a big back like fitness woman competitors :(.

    Hope you answer my question.

    Lola

  • SpanishGirl

Ey zuzana! What were you carrying in that huge backpack?:)

    Hi,
its cool to see that you guys are trying different things. I do alot of hill climbs here in the U.S. some things i do to make it alot more challenging are throwing a tire uphill, chase it and throw it again till you get to the top or another if you have access to one is wear a gas mask and a back pack.(not for people starting out). the mask restricts your breathing alot. just a few things to keep it fun and interesting. but i love your site. keep it up!

    Hi Zuzana!

This video is great and fun! Wish I had hills like that to conqure. Maybe I should start climbing a tree up and down :).

I have an idea which I believe has crossed your mind already. What do you think about putting together a book from your workout routines? I don’t have Internet at home and I do not intend to get it either in the near future, cause I can do all my things at work or in public library. I do have a laptop. It would be great to have a written down help or reminder, as I allready said in one comment that got lost during moving from one server to another, lika a bible of workout. And why not to include a DVD with example videos and a training diary. I do come here everyday from Monday to Friday and write down as much as possible, but still I tend to forget how some exercises should be done.

I truly believe that I wouldn’t be the only one who wants to have your ideas, tips and guides on a paper aswell.

    All the best,

    A.

    Hi Zuzana,

Lost data? I had that happen to a website I was helping with once. Maybe someone in our little community was saving the comments? Some of them were pretty good…espeically mine! 8-)

    Happy US Thanksgiving to all!

    Best wishes,

  • hipretty

Well now I am confused…did you guys move to Malta full time, or did you get a place in Malta?

I thought Victoria was in Canada, but this was just posted this November, and I am sure you were already there (in malta that is)

Awesome kick-ass workout! You guys are SO cute :-D (i posted that on Yu tube as well!)

  • thomas

    what backpack are you carrying?

  • Mauricio Hdz

    I love the view, thanks.

  • Angeline

Frederick I think you deserve a pat on the back for running up AND filming!

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/41740772@N06/?saved=1 Chris L

    Hi Xavier Pep and hipretty(?),

Two centuries ago a queen of England was named Victoria and many places once in the British Empire have her name attached to them, including the capital of British Columbia in Canada and Victoria the capital of the second largest Maltese Island. The latter was where Frederick and Zuzana ran up hill.

I won’t mind knowing the name of the hill and I give kudos to Frederick for running backwards faster than Zuzana could run forwards while also focusing a camera on her without tripping!!!

  • Andy

Awesome video Zuzana!!! I look forward to my cardio session tomorrow morning. However it is snowing outside,(Canada), so I may be doing a “rocky” workout running up the snowwy mountain lol.

    Fantastic website and Tips/Recipes!!!

    Andy.

  • Jo Anne

    Hi Zuzana,

Thanks for all the tips and videos. I am a runner and cyclist. I thought I was already fit. But, when I tried doing your exercises…I felt like a beginner.

Hope you don’t get tired of making videos.

  • http://www.bodyrock.tv/ Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

    HI Jo Anne,

don’t worry, I am a terrible runner and cyclist :) you would beat me in that one for sure. Don’t worry I will never get tired of this. I will be the BodyRock.Tv grandma one day :)

  • Naila

This was so cool, I wish I had a place around me to go hiking and climbing, but its all flat around here.

I think it would be cool for all of us to see you and Frederick together in a video, we are curious what he looks like :)

  • Roma

    “Naah!.. i can do it myself!!!…” hahahaha!!!….

  • Shannon L.

    Hi Zuzana and Frederick!
Holy cow this video is so funny… I was laughing the entire time.
I know what its like to look at a hill and think to yourself “oh i can run up that”… yeah right!
I love hiking up hills, its great.
I was wondering… does Frederick do any of your excercises to? He seemed to be doing pretty good running up that hill, and running up it backwards it seemed like at times.

  • Frederick

    Hi,
I do these same routines and they beat the crap out of me just like everyone else :)

  • Foreign

“NAH! I can do it myself!”

HAHA! This made my day and was the best video by far :)
