Hot Potato Recipe

Hi everyone,

This recipe is made from a few basic ingredients and is very easy to make. It is a recipe from my childhood in the Czech Republic. My mom used to make this for us when we were kids. People used to make these simple, but wholesome meals with the ingredients that were available and inexpensive. We enjoyed the potato cakes yesterday for dinner and they were delicious. I have for you here a step by step, easy to follow guide with pictures so that you can try it at home. Please give me your feedback on this recipe and let me know any interesting variations that you come up with.

Enjoy,

Zuzana.

RECIPE BREAKDOWN:

1

For this recipe you will need the following ingredients:

3 large potatoes, 1 egg, rolled oats (about 3 handfuls), green onions, salt, pepper, ground nutmeg, tomatoes, and cheese ( I used cheddar)

2

Cook the potatoes in a pot as they are, and then peel them when they are cooked. It’s a good idea to let them cool down before you try to peel them – they can get too hot to handle.

3

Grate the potatoes on the smallest grating surface.

4

Crack the egg and beat it.

5

Pour the egg over the grated potatoes.

6

Be generous with the salt and pepper. Not too generous – you know what I mean :)

7

Sprinkle the ground nutmeg over the surface of the mixture.

8

Cut the green onions in half and leave the green ends for garnish. Chop both halves in small pieces.

9

Add the bottom halve of the onion into the bowl with the potatoes.

10

Knead the mixture with your hands adding handfuls of oat as you go. Keep adding more oats until the dough is firm. I used about 3 handfuls of rolled oats.

12

Form the dough into a firm loaf shape.

13

Slice the loaf and form round cakes out of the slices. Try to keep the cakes all the same size. They should fit in the palm of your hand. Don’t make them too thick. Mine were about 1 cm max.

14

Place your cake patties on a dry pan and bake them on both sides until they are lightly brown and become crispy on the surface. Because you are using a dry pan you have to pay attention so that you don’t burn them or make them stick.

16

Place the cakes in a dry baking pan and then cover each of them with one slice of tomato and cheese. I also sometimes use mushrooms instead of tomatoes. In this recipe I used cheddar cheese.

17

Place the pan into the preheated oven and bake at 230°C until the cheese melts over the top of each cake.

You can see what the cakes look like when they’re done in the video. Enjoy this taste of Czech Republic and let me know how it turns out for you.

    Hi zuzana.

The recipe looks delicious and I will try it for sure..I was wondering before I do how much I should eat of it since I am watching my portions? I was wondering if you could tell me what would be the ammount of this meal you would eat? Do you eat only small portions on all meals? It looks so good it would be hard to eat only one! Thank you for this recipe from your country it is very nice to learn about this.

  • Nathalie

    Hi Zuzana,

  • hipretty

Aww I bet your “maminka” used flour…right? Does it taste much different than with flour using oats?

Today is Thanksgiving and I was just thinking about making Deruny (Ukrainian Potato Pancakes) and trying to keep them cleaner without all the frying oil!

    Thank you!

    :-)

  • hipretty

Now I watched the video …and saw the finished product! Nummy Nummy…like Slavic pizza! Hahahaha! ;-)

Hi Zuzana! This looks amazing! I’m definitely going to try it! I also wanted to tell you something about your last workout (the one where you climbed a hill in Victoria). I live in Venezuela and we have a very VERY beautiful place called “La Gran Sabana” which means The Great Jungle. There are great mountains over there, more specifically “tepuys”, which adventurous people (such as yourselves haha) love to climb. It normally takes about a week to climb one of those, and the view is something you will never see anywhere else. It is all nature. “The Jump of the Angel” (El Salto Angel), which is the highest waterfall in the world, is there. If you have seen the cartoon movie called “Up”, it is a copy of The Great Jungle. So I just wanted to suggest to you a little trip over there haha. Any time of the year is good since our weather doesn’t change (we only have spring and summer). It is not expensive and it’s definitely worth it! It was an awesome experience for me and I will never forget it! I’m so very proud to be venezuelan!
PS: look up La Gran Sabana, Canaima, Roraima and El Salto Angel on Google Images and let me know what you think!

    HI Anna,

first bake them on both sides in the dry pan – on the stovetop, and after you put the tomatoes and cheese on it, put it in the oven. These cakes are very, very filling and 2 of those for me are actually more then enough. Freddy eats more of course.

  • Angelina

This was definetly something new and interesting! I cooked it yesterday. Thank you!

By the way, when will we get a glimpse of your husband Frederick???

  • http://he polemicist

As I prepare to eat Turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, pie and ice cream this Thanksgiving (yes, I’m in the USA), I marvel at the differences between the Czech (and Eastern European in general) diet and the American diet.

I’ve known a lot of Czechs and Poles. The men are all lean, the women all thin and beautiful. They’re tall, too. When they come here they all seem to think our food is horrible. They must be right.

Any of them that stay here for a long time, or move here, start to look like us–that is, they put on a lot of weight. I’m very fit. Living in Northern New England, I do a lot of hiking, skiing, biking, etc. I can go up Mt Washington as fast as anyone. When I saw you running up the hill in Victoria, I was glad, because that’s one workout (besides a bench pressing competition) that I could actually beat you in. But, even I have trouble keeping the weight off because of all the calories I shovel down. It’s hard not to.

People have a lot of opinions on health care reform in this country. But most of us aren’t comfortable admitting that one of the biggest problems is not simple costs, or ‘delivery of services’ or even competition. It’s our waistlines.

And btw, Zuzanna, please forgive me if I made any lewd comments on your videos on youtube. I’m a young man and you are amazing looking, which is a bs way of saying I couldn’t help it. My gf is attractive, but not into athleticism at all–I think your body is an amazing accomplishment and something to be proud of. Unlike alot of female bodybuilders, you still manage to remain feminine

  • polemicist

Btw, just wondering if you’ve ever tried this with sweet potatoes?

  • Yas

    Hi!

This looks delicious! When you say “Cook the potatoes in a pot as they are, and then peel them when they are cooked.” Do you mean boil them in water? I don’t cook AT ALL, so I don’t want to mess them up!

    THANK YOU!!!!!!!

  • Tina

    Hi Zuzana,

I just tried this potato cakes and they were delicious!
I will make them again, for sure!
But I didn`t find them so filling and I ate 3 of them! And it was just enough for me.
Now I have a good comparison that you eat less, that`s why you look so much better ;).

    Thank`s for this great recipe,

now I will prepare to do your last – fast burn workout – I have to burn those cakes out of me, haha!

    Have a nice evening,

    Tina

    Zuzana,

What do you call Czech potato pancakes? We (my Ukrainian family) call them deruny (of course they are fried in oil usually as I am sure you know!)

  • Mercy

    Hi Zuzana,

Just made this recipe. It was clean and delicious….Thanks Again:)

  • Christie

Do you think this would be ok with sweet potatoes?

  • E.E.

    Hi again! :D
Hopefully you can see this post Zu and Fred~
As I mentioned before, since we have leftover Thanksgiving turkey meat and whatnot, I decided to take yet ANOTHER (successful) stab at Fred’s suggestion of really learning to cook by trial and error. (this is from the “do we know how to cook” post) I love cooking but it’s not always by instinct, just following recipes. This time, I made really good use of leftover turkey and it’s very easy. I’ve actually never cooked meatloaf, but it tastes so much like it–although I’d like to call it something along the lines of…”Pear Turkey Steak”??

    Ingredients for steak:

    -leftover turkey/chicken/etc.
    -1 egg
    -handful of oats
    -little Thyme leaves
    -little bit of lemon juice
    -1 TBSP worcestershire sauce
    -3 TBSP water
    -salt & pepper
    -1 garlic (or powder)

    Ingredients for pear sauce:

    -1 pear
    -little thyme leaves
-tsp. or two of lemon juice
    -pinch salt & pepper
    -1 garlic

-First, peel the pear, core it, and put it in a food processor or anything that blends and grinds food. Then, add the rest of the ingredients for the sauce to it, and blend it together.

-Afterwards, wash the processor and grind up the leftover meat till it becomes fine textured. Add the egg, salt, pepper, thyme, garlic, and lemon juice. Let it grind until it becomes like a nice pulp or paste. It will be pretty mushy.

-Then, put it all in a bowl and toss in the oats and knead the mixture (like your potato recipe). Make them all into whatever size you want them and flatten them out well–but not too flat, like a steak.

-Last, pour in the water and worcestershire sauce in a skillet and heat it up to medium. Put in the meat and cook it on each side for approximately 3-4 minutes (because of the egg).

-Finally, heat up the pear sauce and when the meat’s ready, pour it on top, and if you want add some cheese like parmesan.

Enjoy!! It really fills you up because it’s been 3 hours and my tummy’s still satisfied. Sorry this is so long!

  • Kendra

Wow! Just made the recipe for dinner tonight and it was awesome! I think my potatoes were a little larger than yours because I had to use 2 eggs and more oatmeal and scallions to get mine to come together like your picture shows. And it made double the amount. I have saved the other half of the “dough” to make tomorrow night and wrapped it up tight in wax paper and put in tupperware then refrigerate until I am ready to use tomorrow. Hope that’s ok! I served these with Curried Split Pea soup and could only eat 2 of these and a few bites of soup before getting full. It’s a great recipe and my husband loved it so much he will have it for breakfast he said! I topped his with the mushrooms and mine with tomatoes…both were excellent! Thanks fo much for sharing. I will be trying your breakfast cake next. We love eating clean and buying the freshest and best food we can. And because you have the same love it makes me love this site even more!! :)

  • http://www.kiplingerpandy.com Lori

I love potato pancakes. We make ours using leftover mashed potatoes. I borrowed some of your ideas and sauteed some minced yellow onion in olive oil and added them to the cold mashed potatoes (which were made with milk, butter, sea salt, pepper and parsley). Adding some rolled oats made the pancakes much easier to make as they absorbed some of the moisture out of the mashed potatoes. They came out better than ever this way!

  • Yossi

Many thanks for the recipe. I am going to try it today!

    Hi Zuzana,
I am here not for the first time, but this time, I am taking my say. Excellent pages, a lot of inspiring stuff. Keep up the effort that surely pays off. As for the recipe, I made it yesterday with my daughter and we ate all baking tin of it at once! I just replaced partially the oats by whole grain bio spelt flour and also added some olive oil.
    Thank you for posting this,
    Karel, Prague

  • TEXAS CINDY

I made these Saturday and again-DELICIOUS! I had it in a toasted wheat pita pocket with a little of sauted spinach with rotel mild tomatoes and it was veeery good. They’re even better the next day warmed in the microwave eaten alone. I also had one for breakfast in a pita pocket with one microwaved egg. Eating one is very filling for me,it’s difficult for me to have even the smallest portion of a snack 2 hours later. Like 10 almonds or just one kiwi. LOL. But that’s good, right? THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS RECIPE.

i loved the potato cakes! very good and very fun and messy to make!!! thanks soo much for all that you do! i’m love to work out and eat healthy too it’s hard to find someone like you who can make working out fun and get results!

I sauted some left over vegetables and crumbled 2 potato cakes into that and ate it atop some brown rice. Later, I sauted salmon and 1 potato cake, ate it in a toasted wheat pita pocket. Delicious! I think when I make the next batch of potato cake I’ll add the salmon into the mix. This is a very versatile recipe. THANKS,Zuzana.

    Yay vegetarian friendly meal!

  • Jerry Howell

nice, I’m going to have to try those tonight

  • D.P.

I made this tonight and I must say, I did not follow the recipe exactly (I didn’t have a shredder, so I chopped the potatoes into small small pieces, mashed them slightly, and went from there) but it came out pretty spectacularly. Thank you for the amazing recipes.

  • JP

Unless i haven’t found it but i would like to see an example of a meal layout plan? A recipe is great and knowing that corn is good for you etc but the single most important element in getting a healthy lean body is your diet.

i dont know if im out of line or if there is somewhere on this site that has that , im just making an observation.

I think that Zuzana is incredible, the workouts are fantastic for sureeee, but i would like to see an example of a meal plan for one day. Probably it would be 5 or 6 small high protein meals im guessing??

    Any thoughts?

    JP

    Ahoj Zuzko,
Určitě tě to stálo hodně úsilí a námahy. I tried to make these but i must have done something wrong. it never felt dough-y to me. it was still sticky when i made it into a loaf and when i tried to cut it, it wouldn’t cut nicely like the picture….

  • Laura

I have celiac, so I am gluten intolerant. Most oats in the U.S. are processed with wheat, which I can’t eat. Do you have any other suggestions to perhaps substitute for the oats? I can eat other flowers such as rice, tapioca, corn, and potato if that helps.

Thanks so much. You are such an inspiration.

  • Bella

    Hey Zuzanna,
how many of those hot potatoes did you eat for one meal?

  • Barbara M.

At first, I didn’t really like it. There was no taste. ONly potato. I was lilke…maybe I didn’t put enough salt, pepper and nutmeg. With your “generous” not sure what you mean by that. Or maybe I put a lot of oats. I don’t how many I put it because you say until it firms.

Today, I made it again. This time lol it was nice. I made sure I put enough salt, pepper and nutmeg than before (nooot too much), that it crispy and all that. I’ve taste it and, it was better…. a lot better. lol

Though, I’m not fan of potato (I prefer the other one….it’s not potato but it taste like one…only that it has more “Glucid”. It calls “yuca”) but I did it for my nephew. He loooves potatos and he was like “It’s good” and put all in his mouth suddenly. lol

My nephew is obese though and I wanted to encourage him to eat healthy food. Like myself.

    Thanks a lot! >-)

  • Barbara M.

You can just cut one piece to cook (I don’t know how many you want to eat) where it’s “loaf shape” and store it in refrigator (the other piece) for later.

  • S

I just made these potato cakes yesterday and they were so good!
I ended up needing a lot more than 3 handfuls of oats though. I think I used 5 or 6 handfuls. Yummy!

  • Laura

I was just wondering how many of these potatoe cakes we can eat in a sitting for it to still be healthy?

  • http://www.budgetrockstar.blogspot.com Lori

Hmm…looks like an easy dinner or lunch awesome recipe.

  • Gem

    Hi Zuzana

YUMMY!! I changed the recipe a little, just to make it a little bit healthier. I added sweet potato and used less potato because sweet potato is better for you and they are sweet so add a very nice taste.

I also added Italian herbs. They are just a mix of lots of types of herbs. I also added a few cloves of garlic minced up.

Let me know if you try my add ons and tell me what you think :-)

  • Gem

Oh and I forgot but added tuna from a can is also really yummy and healthy!

  • Euthie

Wow, thank you for this recipe! I have leftover potatoes that I’ve been really worrying about how to use them. It looks really tasty–I can’t wait to try it! P.S. your Breakfast Cake was DELICIOUS! More recipes, please! Yours are always so incredibly simple!

  • Jason

I’ve always baked potatoes in an oven, so I have to ask; how do you actually cook a potato in a pot? Do you boil them? Someone help me; I really want to try this recipe before I ruin any more potatoes :X

  • Hanka

ahoj, já si myslím to samé a byla bych ráda kdyby jsi odpověděla i mně.:)

  • Mary13

I do not eat potatos but THIS looks very good! I guess my husband gonna love it!:)

  • Tamara

Could you put like a full day meal plan on the website or let me know where I could find one? I understand to eat simple fresh foods not processed, but I’m not sure what to make with these foods once I get them. Thanks.

  • Dee Ann

I added some garlic in only cause I love garlic!!! But love your site!!

  • Dudeilostmycat2001

  • Dudeilostmycat2001

looks good can’t Waite to try it.

  • Anonymous

omg.. I just made these and they are DELICIOUS!!! Great recipe!!

  • Denisthemenace76

Bring a pot of water seasoned with salt to the boil and pop in the potatoes.
The water level should be just above the potatoe height.
Wait around 10min plus and check to see it soft if not leave a little longer.
Its the way I do it anyway, hope this helps you.

  • http://loyoya.nl LoyoyaNL

Mmmm yummy! I’m going to give these a try! I think I’ll add some garlic to them….can’t wait to eat them. Thank you so much.
