Our First Rock Climbing Lesson

Hi everyone,

We had so much fun today at our first rock climbing lesson and we both fell in love with it. We had  great weather and our first lesson took place in Mellieha – Malta. We both couldn’t believe  that this is December. It feels like June. You can see the beauty of this place on the picture below.

4

First we learned some basic terms and techniques and then we tried our first climb. To be honest, I was very nervous when I tried to climb up the first time and I had Frederick to lower me before I even got to the top. For the second time I felt more confident and getting all the way to the top felt just incredible. Freddy was way more confident right from the start and managed to climb up without any problem what so ever. The instructor made me feel better by saying that everything takes practice and women are usually better climbers then men :)

5

I was surprised how much I had to use my legs instead of my upper body.

We both got addicted to rock climbing and we are already planning to do this every week. I am sure that there will be a lot more opportunities to share with you new experiences, pictures and videos.

Thanks for stopping by and see you tomorrow ;)

Zuzana.

Looks like fun! I have done some rock climbing before, and it takes a ton of strength! Well done your two. ;)

  • Kamillzyna

Wow, looks like fun, beautiful part of the world — i’d love to visit there for travel. Thank you guys for sharing. ;)

  • TEXAS CINDY

Usually women don’t like to have their pictures taken from the “back view”. But, you obviously don’t have a problem with that thanks to your workouts. Great shot,Frederick. LOL. P.S., The mountain scene is also beautiful.

    No gloves?

    Hi Zuzana
Congratulations, it`s really great to try something new. That been said, I really would like to know how to obtain a fit, slim yet muscular body as yours.I know that you said that is all about exercising and diet (portion control and compromise), but I really want you to give an example of what an ordinary day of your diet plan is, to have a clear idea and start from that. I hope you can help me. Thank you in advance and congrats again, your blog is absolutly amazing, I read it every day and try to keep up with you.

    Hello,

Wow, this is breath taking! Rock climbing is in our “TO DO LIST” and hopefully one day…. one day…

=) glad to see you back!

  • http://bodyspace.bodybuilding.com/shapinglight/ Lucka Mantra

I thought that you guys would love it! And it is true that us woman are usually better climbers then men, we have to be more skilled because men tend to ‘cheat’ and use their muscles and long arms to just reach past hard spots rather then deal with them ;) Maybe if you come to BC sometime we could go climbing together ;)

  • Lizz

I am so happy that you took your first step to rock climbing! I am an avid climber, going on 2 years of it. Personally, I do not enjoy working out (though your workouts have made me appreciate it more); however, I find that rock climbing gives me a really great workout while I feel like I’m just playing a game and monkeying around! I can’t wait to see your progression with the sport!

    Sincerely,
    Lizz

  • Guillermo

hey zuzana what happened to the workout routines??? Not the daily ones but the main ones you already had up??

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/41740772@N06/?saved=1 Chris L

    Hi Frederick and Zuzana,

Have you thought of working for Malta’s tourist board? I mean if I could afford it I would take a winter vacation to go climbing there! Maybe there should be Google Ads off to the right for trips to Malta!

So give us more details on the climb… Like was the instruction thru a club or how did you pick the instructor. Did you buy the hardware or did you rent?

Hey! Is the “video” broken? I keep clicking on it and it doesn’t do anything…8-) (I’m sorry folks who are having problems with vids here. I just couldn’t help myself!)

    Hi Guillermo,

all of the old workouts are in Archives, you just have to go through the pages. Click on any post and you will see right underneath that post thumbnails that are related to that particular workout – so it is really easy to find.

    Hi Rosario,

it is really just about a common sense. What I eat? I share that in every single diet article – real food in small portions. I cook from different recipes that I share here on the blog every once in a while.

I’m sure you are going to enjoy rock climbing, it really uses all major muscle groups and includes large movements. I did a summer of rock climbing in New York, in New Paltz at the Shawangunk mountains (“The Gunks”). It is true that women make better climbers than men, because they tend to have a better strength to weight ratio. If you are climbing the right way, you use almost all leg muscle, and only the arms for guidence. Essentially, a good climber “Walks” up the rock face of a mountain, correct placement of hands and feet is everthing. Take it slow and you will enjoy your climb. Be safe.

I just got back from a trip to Egypt, so I know the weather is beautiful where you are, at this time. Love your new videos, the jump up from kneeling is unbelievable.

  • karin

haha you born for rock climbing!
i really like it too it is vary good full body workout.. =]

  • Roq

Cool!! Rock climbing is definitely something I would like to try one day…and ice climbing. I once had the opportunity to go and climb up a frosen waterfall. It sucks that I couldn’t take advantage of that offer. I don’t doubt you will be great at the sport, especially now that you have built a good strength base :-)

  • Jo Anne

Cool!!! Thanks for sharing. Great view! Tried wall climbing before and I didn’t like it. Guess, I should try the real thing to really appreciate it. Good job, guys!

  • Marianne

Hey the rock climbing looks like a lot of fun. Pity I’m scared of heights or I’d give it a go lol. Been reading a lot of comments lately about what you eat in a day and I feel I should say, that although it can be useful so see what other people eat, it may not be right for some people. It’s about finding what’s right for you.

I have recently realised that my diet needs more attention. I think I am having the same problem as you Zuzana back in Feb. You mentioned you were maybe eating too many calories and getting more bulky muscle. This as happened to me too. In the last 9 months or so I have put on 8lbs of muscle!! In the last 3 months or so I’ve gained nearly an inch on my arms! I think I’m eating too much. All I want is more definition, not more muscle! So for anyone who has the same issue, or any issue they wish to change, I definitly suggest keeping a food and excerise diary for a couple of weeks to monitor things. It’s amazing how it all adds up. I have a very big appetite and I find portion control very difficult. I’m 165cm now 127lbs BF about 22% (this hasn’t changed).

I would only like to ask you one thing Zuzana. How did you control your portions at the start? Once you adjust, it’s easier I no, but right now, it a NIGHTMARE! lol You may have araedy answered this question, but need some advice. Think we have pretty similar body types but I maybe have weaker willpower :/ Have you any other good advice for me? Thanks

  • http://www.bodyrock.tv/ Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

    Hi Marianne,

I am actually still fighting this same problem :) it is difficult for everyone. What is helping me is to eat food that I like very much and variety so that I get satisfied even from small portions. Let’s say I have little portion of pasta and chicken, then I have half of orange (I share with my husband) and few almonds (sometimes even little piece of chocolate) this way I keep my craving under control. I also drink a lot of water with fresh lemon juice. I hope this helps, because I know how hard it is keeping the portions small and dealing with your cravings.

  • Steele

That’s great that you like climbing, I’m an avid climber inside and out and after starting your workout a month ago I have gone up three grades in difficulty thanks to the flexibility power movements in your workouts.

You are going to be a great climber, when my wife trains and gets into climbing shape she can power through the technical moves that I struggle with.
Keep us posted on you climbs

  • Lucy

    Hi Zuzana,

the scenery in the photo is beautiful. It really doesn´t look like December :) You must have enjoyed nice weather together with this outdoor activity.

I discovered your site almost one month ago and your workouts are very inspiring. I´ve been checking this site every day since I found it. You´ve helped me to start working out again after a long break. I´ve been doing some of your workout routines and I finally enjoy doing the workouts again and I always look forward to my next training :) So I want to thank you! And not only for the workout videos, but also for a lot of very useful information concerning lifestyle in general.

hi suzana!!! i´m so excited you´ve tried rock climbing…. i´m a profesional rock climber here in Colombia, South America and i just love this sport. I think it´s a very fun way to excersise and it developes a lot of skills that will help you in your normal life; as been very decided person, to face your fears, and the most importan part of all, it gives you the opportunity to travel and go to places you´ve never imagined.i´m so happy to know that other women are trying my sport!!!!!!!!!!!!
I´m sure your muscles are very tired today and that you had the best experience ever.. that´s why you are my heroe… i just love this blog!!!
thank you so much and keep climbing!!!

  • Rosario, Chile

    Thank`s very much. :)

  • Tina

hey Zuzana.. great website u have..my question is how come we never see any pics of Frederick on here?

    just wondering..

  • http://www.trainerpack.com Trainerpack

nice pics….looks like an amazing experience

  • tess from Canada

I also did rock climbing and loved it! Such a great workout and I also have a fear of heights so it challenged me to accomplish something that really was a significant barrier for me (my heart still pounds at high heights though). My climbing instructor told me that women make better climbers because they think more than men climbers. Men tend to muscle their way up the face while women will strategize the climb more and think it through. Whatever method you use it is so much fun. And the mountains where you climb are beautiful!

  • Diana

    hey Zuzana,

What happened to the old Workout Routines page? it disappeared last week and it was way easier to navigate than the Archives

  • Jana

Great job!! I’ve been climbing since I was very young, when my dad got me into the sport. From the looks of the pictures, the rock your climbing is the sticky type, where you could smear your way up to the top, making it a great place to start! If you do end up really loving the sport, you should also try ice climbing. A little more dangerous, but a great workout for your entire body, especially you calves!

  • Frederick

    Hi Diana,
We are making some tweaks and changes to the site, but we should have the archives section organized much better very soon :)

  • http://www.bodyrock.tv/ Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

    Ahoj Ondro,

    dekuji za hezke prani :)

  • Lang

Frederick has a great eye for perfect composition. That’s just a beautiful rear end shot, and it captures all the nice “curves” in the photo :)

I’ll have to try rock climbing someday hehe :)
    Cheers.

    p.s. It’s snowing here….I hate you :P

Hi Zuzana, thanks for your reply. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in the struggle. But great tip about still eating the food I like, but keeping portions small :) Hopefully my idea of small is small enough lol

ok sure … Frederick.. there are so many pictures of Zuzana and of course, why shouldnt there be since she is the reason for this workout website but since you both run it and you also follow a healthy and active lifestyle why not reveal yourself too to inspire more men to see Zuzana’s other half? :-) (I’m not saying to the extent of Zuzana, but an occasional picture or video of urself would be nice.. we always read your articles but have no face to go with it)

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/41740772@N06/?saved=1 Chris L

    Hi Tina,

I think you’re beating a dead horse! If Fred wanted to have images of himself up here it would have happened already.

Like this needs saying: Some people are not extroverted at all and are even very introverted. I personally love attention, but can see Fred’s reluctance to be public with so personal a thing as his image. We should try to understand and suppress our curiosity a little.

    Best wishes,
    –Chris

  • Tina

Thanks for your opinon Greg but didnt think it would hurt to ask (although I would have prefered a reply from the man himself)

have a great day and keep up the inspiring website Zuzana & Frederick ! :-)

  • Deb

i consider zuzanna and frederick to be my personal trainers and i respect very much the advice they give… i would LOVE a face to go with the ‘phantom’ frederick posts :)

  • bodyrokers

Susanna Hello. You can write himself somewhere? I have a few problems.

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/41740772@N06/?saved=1 Chris L

    Hi Tina,

    If you’re referencing me…I’m a Chris not a Greg.

My point is Frederick hasn’t said anything about the subject of posting anymore pictures of himself (that I have read or seen). And is is perfectly capable of communication, thus he doesn’t want to talk about it or post any more images. These are facts not opinion.

Why is it so hard for some folks to except him as he is? His wife, Zuzana does. This should be sufficient. If he changes his mind then he will let us know.

Please, don’t be angry with me for pointing out the obvious.

    Best wishes to all,
    –Chris

Sorry Chris.. dont know why I called you “Greg” but cant figure out where or why I stated that name (guess I had a weird moment there..again, my apologies)

I am not the only one that has asked to see the mysterious Frederick but sometimes certain “introverted” people may need a little push. I admire and am inspired by their posts, videos and nutritional information they share on their website. I am very into fitness and nutrition as is my husband and to see another couple have this similiar lifestyle and share it with others only inspires us more (hence my wanting to see Zuzana’s other half) I think my request, as well as others, have paid off since they posted a video of the both of them today. And as I imagined, Frederick and Zuzana make a great looking athletic couple ;-)

    best regards~

  • Geodfreid-Manson

No Gloves don’t usually work very well as you need the direct contact with the rock,,,We sometimes use a little bit of cloth tape when your fingers get rubbed off from to much climbing or from popping off

  • Janina

ha ha my husband is a climbing instructor and he says the same “women are usually better climbers than men”

  • Marlon

can you give me the details if possible were I can get the rock climbing lessons (website, contact), I am quite interested in trying this sport :)

    Thanks

  • Kairi

Mmm! Yay, climbing! This is such a great sport if you love traveling, too! You can climb pretty much anywhere and everywhere! If you love route climbing, you should try bouldering! (In case you don’t know, it’s climbing without harnesses or ropes, and the route are typically anywhere from 7-25 feet up, involving very technical moves). I’ve been doing it for years, and I can’t imagine going back to route climbing! :) I recommend the La Sportiva Solutions as far as shoes go.

  • ozziepossum

Hi guys. Wow, rock climbing, how I would love to get back into that! I used to compete in indoor climbing comps. We often went outdoors to some of the greatest climbs in Australia, Arapiles, the Grampians, the Three Sisters…. And it was such a great way to get fit! Unfortunately, I no longer have a climbing partner :(

Bouldering is something anyone can do, as you are only a metre or so off the ground and won’t do a major injury if you fall. Plus there are so many places you can boulder for free!
