Hi guys,
I hope that you will enjoy this cake. It’s an old Czech recipe that my grandma and my mom used to make for us when we were kids. I remember my mom saying What shall we have for dinner kids? We have some milk, yesterday’s rolls and enough apples to make Zemlovka. My answer was always jooooo! (which means yeahhh). It’s so easy to make kids happy hey :) I know that it sounds strange, but it really never was a desert. It was actually a dinner or lunch and we would eat it warm. Now we eat just a little piece as a desert or with fruit for breakfast. We both prefer when it’s cold from the fridge, although Frederick is always dreaming about warm Zeml baba with vanilla ice cream :)
So here is the step by step recipe for czech Zemlovka:

All you need is whole wheat bread chopped in smaller pieces (how much depends on the size of your casserole dish), milk, honey, maple sirup (optional), 2 apples, cinnamon, and ginger.

Soak the bread in the milk (we have 2%)

Make a layer of the soaked bread on the bottom of the casserole dish. If you want you can drizzle some maple sirup over the top.

Peel both apples.

Grate the apples on the larger grating surface over the top of the first layer.

Drizzle about 2 to 3 table spoons of honey over the grated apples.

Sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of Ginger and Cinnamon over the top.

Cover the entire surface with walnuts and make a second layer from the soaked bread.

You can drizzle more maple sirup or honey over the top (your choice) before you put it in the preheated owen. I baked it at 230°C for about 35 minutes.

When the surface is light brown and crunchy, you can take it out of the owen and let it cool down.
Enjoy!
Zuzana and Frederick.

Hummm miam miam, it looks tantalizing and easy to do! I will test it this weekend. Thanks you both ! Enjoy your weekend! ;)
Kisses and Hugs from Luxembourg
it looks so delicious…thanks Zuzana
Hey Z,
This looks super yummy. I want to make it but I’m afraid I’ll eat too much of it!
I have a couple of questions about some older diet videos of yours. First, I think you mentioned Salba is only sold in Canada or North America. Are you still eating it and ordering it online now?
Secondly, in your first diet video you mention you eat a spoon full of organic pysllium before every meal. Do you still drink?
I’ve really been focusing on my eating lately and considering psyllium because although I’m fit and strong I still weigh 71kg at 166cm. The weight is mostly in my thighs and it really won’t go away despite eating small meals throughout the day.
Thanks for your time,
Ashley
My grandma used to make a similar dessert using matzoh bread, apples and sultanas. But she would eat the WHOLE apple core – pips and all! This brings back so many good memories of all the other wonderful dishes she made when I was a child. Real comfort food. Will save this recipe for winter – just hit 39 C – 104 F today.
Thank you Zuzana

Oh ! ) This is really good recipe ) In Estonia we eat this cake really often )
Looks nice. To be sure try.
I have only one kind of question: I have chosen to lose weight. And I also intend to really do it. The best diet I am still searching (which goes pretty good). Only I have no idea what is the best body workout. Because I have total and therefore totally out of shape + I have quite a fat stored (the body). So I was hoping you would have some tips on what a good workout. My dream purpose is to get something like Beyonce. Think of most large buttocks, women arms , super nice legs and also a great muscular stomach. I am a large build (quite wide) + nice long (approx. 1.73). You think you see me down workouts and that’s just it. I really think you have great looks. Only it’s just that I do not find me fit. Frankly I have no idea what workouts I should do? (But I hear that cycling gives you a slimmer waist and a wider bottom <- So what I want. It would run any good lover
I hope you can help me. PS: Sorry for the long story and my bad English (am live inthe Netherlands).
And I have been very young (15 years, do not know if it matters but say it here).
Take Care Monique
I mean take care lobke!
I like this because it looks easy.
Hello, Zuzana and Frederick!
First, I want to thank you for that big deal, that you both are doing. It’s very useful for me.
I’m from Russia, Moscow. I’m 20 yars old.
I started to get fit about 1 year ago. First it was for my boyfriend Pavel (or Paul), then it became like a drugs for me. But my progress stopped recently, until my ex-boyfriend Pavel (we have not meet, but we are good friends) showed me your video. It happenned accidentally.
Well, now I love your blog, thank you very much!!!
And your workouts are on the 1st place for me.
And I realy like your recipes. I made Breakfast Cake and Hot Potato and it wasn’t usual for my Russian citchen but it was very tasty!)))
I just want to wish you happyness and love!
P.S. Sorry for my illiterate English, I just learn!;)))
I wish I could eat it now for breakfast with my Green Monster Shake. The pictures look scrumptious. I will definitely try this recipe next holiday or for a get together.
Thank You
I’m feeling hungry ;-) nice!
wow!! ll definiely try this one.like the idea of using wheat bread…..
That looks really good!!! Can’t wait to make it, sounds like a good side dish to bring to a party, too… I’m going to a baby shower next weekend, I’ll make it for that and let you know how mine turns out, I love to bake and to try new things.. :)
Does Zeml baba and Zemlovka both mean sweet cake?
Thanks Z & F :)
Ruth
Hi Ruth,
Zemle means bun or bread and baba means grandma :)
this looks great! I’ll try it soon.
I’ve been making your other breakfast cake for the past month in a half. Each time i start a new batch i make new adjustments like – adding unsweetened coconut flakes, Agave instead of honey, 1 egg, no egg, different nuts. I tried pumpkin seeds and it wasn’t that great. so i wouldn’t recommend trying that but all the rest were great.
I’ve been using bulgar and oats almost always and no egg typically. I like no egg because it makes it more crumbly and for breakfast i put a little bit of kefir ontop and it takes amazing.
As you can read, I really enjoy eating it and i’ve been eating it for breakfast everyday and often i will bring some as a snack for later in the day. You mentioned that it’s a meal that you don’t want to eat a lot of or at least in very small portions, do you think i’m going over board with eating it this often?
Hi Zuzie and Freddy,
it looks really jummy! I will try it for sure.
Thanks for that receipe!
Haha, Zemlovka…Slovenian and Czech language have lots of similarities, I understand about 80 percent of your writting.
Zemlje = thats how we call buns.
Cant wait for tomorrows workout,
Best wishes!
Tina
There’s something faulty with the video, beginning at 5:12. With every browser I use, the video and audio just stop at that same time.
Looks good! Will have to wait until we get back to The Netherlands! :)
i will definatly try this recipe if not today – sooner but it looks really good & i know i’d be avle to veganize it(: soymk instead if milk – agave in place of honey(: so win, win.. win(b/c we all win) i know i tried this vegan buberry (blueberry) muffin recipe & it was really delicious. i am looking forward to more of those & to making this recipe.
Goin to the kitchen to make it right now! Perfect for the cold weather. Look forward to the next workout!!!
Hello Zuzana!
Thanks for bringing this recipe. I’m Polish from the Silesia region and we have similar thing but without ginger & cinnamon and with water instead of milk.
Anyway thanks for reminding me about it.
Keep up the great work folks. Best Regards for both of you.
Please keep sharing unique recipes like this! I can’t wait to make it for my honey :).
So glad to see you added another recipe! I can’t wait to try this one!
Thanks Zuzana and Frederick! I am not much of a chef but this looks easy enough :) It looks like a good post-workout snack – do you ever have it for that to refuel?
Ahoj Zuzko,
you don’t put raisins into zemlovka?
We also add a little bit of curd or cottage cheese (if this is the right word for “tvaroh”) and we pour whisked egg mixed with milk over the top .It’s super crunchy then.
Have to try to add ginger.I like this spice and I wonder how it’s gonna taste.
Take care.
Niomay
Hi Niomay,
tvaroh sounds good! I have to try that. My mom used to put tvaroh only into strudl. I forgot about the egg, you are right.
Dear Zuzana your cake looks delicious and healthy too. You’ve got a wonderful shape! Please tell me are you a personal trainer? Your workouts are really inspiring – lots of variety – never to get bored!
WELL DONE!
looking forward for more videos!
Coucou Zuzana!
I love your cooking vids! Watched all your diet vids searching new ideas for good and healthy meals. Later I will go down to the city (if I will find my car under the snow…) to get bulgur and some other things you showed! Since 3 weeks I´m following your workout (ouch -hehe…) and I want to eat more healthy again.
Kisses
Sonia
P.S.: Are you still searching for a solution to get rid of your non-visible “wrinkles”??
This is the hottest cooking show I have ever seen in my entire life.
Serious I need help with eating. I’ll do good for a week, and then out of nowhere Mcdonalds just pulls me in. Its like I undo the days of workouts I put in. How do you get the will to stay away totally from junk foods. I’m not overweight, but I know I’m not achieving my best because I cant stick to good foods, or eating right completely. Help! By the way your workouts rock! :)
Ahojky Zuzko,
opět paráda článek, jsem hrdá jak nám proslavuješ zemlbábu ;D v dnešním videu ti to neskutečně sluší, snad ještě víc než jindy ;) zajímalo by mě, jak dlouho vám tahle miska třeba vydrží, při vašich malých porcích to musíte jíst tak minimálně týden ne?Já do tohohle receptu ještě sypu obrovská kvanta skořice, pak to nemá chybu ;)
Mějte se hezky, posílám pozdrav z čr a nemůžu se dočkat dalšího videa:)
Kristýna
Looks like a bread pudding! Mmm. I will have to try it with raisins and the egg! Thank you!
It looks delicious and easy to do. I need to go to the grocery store.
Ziker
Zuzana- How do you stay motivated to eat right and workout daily? I find I have a hard time staying motivated. I get easily bored or easily frustrated when i feel like I’m not seeing results quick enough, so I quit and then look for something else. In the end, I always end up the same. Eating the same I always do and working out 2-3 times a week. I always want to do better or more, but I can’t seem to keep my motivation up to finish what i start.
do u need to use a certain type of apple, cuz
some are really good for baking :)
d
Great Recipe, im so glad i can incorporate a new type of food to my book&memory :)
I think you should call these videos healthy recipe or somethingsimilar because you have said you are not dieting, its a healthy and conscious choice. But they are also yummy, so you might want to mention that as well because new combers might be afraid of what the almighty Frederick and Zuzanna eat to keep their bods so amazing haha :)
Thanks Again!
Hi Zuzana- You know its not nice to call your Grandma an “OLD CHICK”! LOL Sorry . I thought that was funny.
We Love your site and all your workouts. looking forward to your personal training 1 0n 1.
One question. We can never find the pants or tops you are wearing on the lululemon site.. Some are close, but I like the color behind the knee on you last pair and that is not on the site :(
-R
This looks soooo delicious! I’ll make some tomorrow for sure. Perhaps, you should include all your recipes in one section other than the diet tips you now have.Thanks,Zuzana.

Ahoj Zuzko,
