Farmer’s Chicken Recipe

Hi everyone,

This is a recipe that I came up with over the holidays. Frederick loves it and encouraged me to share it here with you guys. I hope you will enjoy this meal. It is really delicious! Let me know how you like it.

ingredients

You will need: Whole grain bread chopped in pieces, chicken breasts (1/2kg) chopped in pieces, butter, apple, large tomato, broccoli, celery, mushrooms, green or red pepper, 2 large onions, 4 garlic cloves, mixed nuts with raisons or just walnuts. Spices: sage, oregano, thyme, nutmeg, black pepper, cayenne pepper, salt.

onion-in-big-pot

Saute one large onion with a little bit of olive oil in a large pot.

chicken-in-the-big-pot

Add chicken breasts, salt, pepper, a piece of butter and 2 or 3 glasses of water. Cover with a lid and let it cook until the chicken is done. Tip: a little more butter will give it a really nice taste.

apple

Chop up all of the fruit, veggies and mushrooms except the garlic – this goes in later.

chopped-vegetable

Saute the mix on a skillet. Add a little piece of butter and the spices. You can experiment with the amount of each spice. Be careful with the cayenne pepper so that you don’t make it too hot.

nuts

Add about 3 handfuls of mixed nuts with raisons into the skillet and saute until the vegetables are soft.

BreadAndChicken

Put the bread pieces in the casserole bowl. I used 3 whole grain buns. When the chicken is ready, pour the sauce over the bread and mix the chicken with the bread.

mixture

Add the garlic cloves chopped in little pieces and mix it in. You can grate some cheese over the top. I used the Gozo goat cheese which is delicious – the only goat cheese that I actually like. Put it in the preheated oven (230°C ) and leave it there for 15 to 20 minutes until the cheese is melted on the top or until the bread on the top is crunchy. You have to watch it, because it is easy to burn the top.

MyPortion

This is what my small portion looks like. Plan your meal according to your daily activities. Are you going to sit infront of your computer for the next 3 hours? Then you should eat a really small portion and include more vegetables. Are you going to be active? If this is the case then take a slightly larger portion.

    Hi Zuzana,

Check out this quick video, it will teach you some knife skills used by chefs to avoid getting cut. In particular watch at 2:10 and it will show you how to shape your fingers on the hand that is holding the food.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9EUfbTbLWI

    Nice recipe!

  • teresa

looks great! only thing is, i am a vegetarian…do you think this could be done with no chicken? just the bread and veggies? it kind of reminds me of a decadent stuffing!

  • Sarah

That is the smallest most depressing amount of food i have ever seen!!

  • fuory

Yummy !! Gonna try it tomorrow,
    thanks,

    * what happened to the quality ? !

    thank you

  • maryh

    Hi Zuzanna & Frederick..
That looked really nice..i would need to use different vegetables though because i get bad stomach pains with apples, peppers, onions, broccoli..etc..LOL.almost all of these individually, so together i think it may kill me completely :P
I am taking your advice and using more spices in my cooking which makes meals so much tastier..your right!!

I would find it very helpful if you would determine the average weight of your portions..i know it would depend on what the meal actually contains but i think it would help me alot as its hard to guage by just looking at your plate.
    Thanks in advance :)

  • http://www.bodyrock.tv/ Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

Sure, but what kind of sauce would you use to soak the bread if not the chicken sauce?

  • http://www.bodyrock.tv/ Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

Thanks for the link, it was very helpful. I will try to cut the way she did it in the video the next time :)

  • Audra Gatti

Mmmmmmm can’t wait to try it :-P

A nice way to change up my chicken dishes.

Thanks for the recipe Zuzana :-)

  • maryh

Maybe i would suggest vegetable stock cube or maybe a ‘white sauce’ made with cornflour &Tofu/Quorn instead of chicken for Teresa,,
Im sure it would still have a lovely flavour based on the rest of the ingredients that were used.

  • Rebecca

Looks really yummy. Thanks for sharing=)

  • Dom

You’re welcome. This video is also very good and shows you how to use your fingers on more round vegetables.

  • Pikmin

Hi there, I’m so gonna try it out! We’re all from different part of the world and we all have different eating habits, for instance in Italy portions are huge and double (first PLUS second course), and remember: don’t you dare saying “No, thanks” when invited for dinner :)!

However I agree with Zuzana when she says that in modern society we tend to overeat, and this dish looks to me like a tasty and complete main/only course, very handy for your lunch box too.

One tiny piece of advice from my mamma, take out the green thingy (named “anima”, that is “soul”) inside the garlic clove before chopping it. Supposedly, it’s the least digestible part.

    Yours
    Pikmin

  • Georgeanne

Zuzana, sweetie you need to invest in a better knife, get a chef knife. It looks like the one you are using is the type used for boning meat. You make me nervous cutting with that knife you are using. Check out some of the chefs on the foodnetwork cooking shows or the website for guidance.
I love stuffing it is just so home style and yummy, I can’t believe already there are comments here on your portion size.
    Have a lovely evening!

  • kimberliev

i’m really sad about your fingers – you sound hopeless:)
i eat at least a whole onion every day and i never get cut.. i use really sharp knives by cutco, but there is a great mandolin slicer you can use…

    http://www.pamperedchef.com/ordering/prod_details.tpc?prodId=13773&catId=4&parentCatId=4&outletSubCat=&viewAllOutlet=

    or else a great chopper… http://www.pamperedchef.com/ordering/prod_details.tpc?prodId=240&catId=4&parentCatId=4&xPrntItmId=1087

either will keep your fingers away from your knives :)

  • http://pinchmysalt.com/2007/10/24/how-to-cut-an-onion-with-fewer-tears-a-photo-tutorial/ Courtney

This dish looks delicious cant wait to try it. I also wanted to share the onion cutting tips I use to keep myself from crying. I remember as a kid I used to have to go outside when my mom was cutting onions my eyes were so sensitive. So after doing all the things they say work to help this I found that cutting them next to an open flame helps amazingly but I see you have an electric cook top so I don’t know if you’ll be able to use that one :) Secondly I found the faster I can get the onion cut the less tears I have. I found this picture tutorial that uses the same technique I use. It gets the onion cut quickly and with less tears so hopefully with Dom’s video and these tips we’ll have no crying and no bleeding in the food :)

    http://pinchmysalt.com/2007/10/24/how-to-cut-an-onion-with-fewer-tears-a-photo-tutorial/

Hopefully all my rambling will help :)

you should have a separate tab for recipes on your website!

  • tanya

well I am definatly eating too much! haha. :) thanks for the recipe

  • Elle

Zuzanna please start eating more!! Do you really believe that you are nourishing your strong fit body by eating such ridiculously small portions. It doesn’t matter if you are sitting in front of a computer for 3 hours or more. Your metabolism works 24/7 whether or not your skeletal muscles are working or not. Chronic low calorie diets are a death wish and will eventually result in two outcomes, breaking down lean tissue and slowing your metabolism down. Think of your diet a few years from now….Is it sustainable and can you really see yourself eating like this when you are 40,50,60? Would you really have enough energy for those gruelling workouts and life in general (kids, work etc) if you keep eating like this? By the way….I’m a nutritionist who loves your workouts and admires your dedication to your exercise and urge you to dedicate the same amount of energy to your portions, which believe me is not that hard given that your meals are healthy, Goodluck:-)

  • Yasmine

    Hi Zuzanna,

Thankyou for the wonderful fitness and diet advice. As a runner, I am always looking for healthy and delicious recipes! Try keeping your onions in the fridge. Cold onions will not make your eyes water (as much) ;)

  • Rob

    Hi Dom,

Interesting vid, I never choke up on a knife unless I’m pressing thru something heavy like a bone and I would use a much heavier knife to do it.

But, the keeping the board tight and the food being prepped stationary is a good idea for beginners. Still, I don’t like how she holds the celery at all as you’re going to cut your knuckles doing it that way.

My Aunt use to cut food exactly like Zuzana does, and she was a great cook! And we all cut ourselves once in a while. If Zuzana feels awkward I would suggest looking at several videos on cutting food and finding a technique she feels comfortable with. At your youtube link on the side bar are several chef’s cutting things…all worth check out.

For me the most important thing is to keep your knifes sharp!

Zuzana, You are a great cook! But, put your onions in the freezer for a minute before cutting then and cut them as fast as you can! A slightly bigger and really shape knife would help. The dish looks really delicious, thank you!

    –Chris

  • Mickela

Zuzana that is a great recipe, it is winter and that sounds like the perfect thing to cook to warm the home and body.
I like that you make hearty meals and then serve smaller portions. That is also a well rounded healthy meal.

I think it is better on the digestive tract to have small portions especially at night. I bet the leftovers will be amazing too.

  • Kasia

This portion is really small (or the plate is so big ;P )… I guess you must eat really often (more than 5 times a day) to be able to do so intense workouts and not blackout ;)
I’m curious how many calories (approximately) you eat per day?

  • Dave O

Been eating frequent small portions for over a year now. I use to have to take heart burn meds each night and would still have miserable sleep. Since switching to the smaller portions – No more meds and No more heartburn :-)

  • Katharine

Hi Theresa. I ama vegetarian also. I was thinking about trying this with soy sauce

  • Katharine

This made me laugh…it does look small compared to “American” portions. However I am sure it would fill you up!

  • Ruth

maybe vegetarian vegetable broth would be good… :)

  • Alexandra

My mouth is watering. I am trying this out tonight. I love your portion tip- I actually bought smaller bowls so I don’t have to use a big plate and see all that empty space. I use my 1 1/2 cup bowl for all my meals, I don’t fill it to the brim. Then for my snacks I have fruit and veggies maybe a small hand full of nuts. It was very hard at first, but now I am used to it and feel better. Thanks!

  • Grace

    Hi Zuzana!

I just wanted to let you know that I love, love, love your website (and you, of course!). I found it recently and just tried one of your workouts today. It was great! As a professional athlete, I’m always looking for better ways to challenge myself. And I felt so great afterwards! It’s just what I need right now to get stronger and faster. :) My boyfriend, also an athlete, tried the workout with me and only made it halfway through… ;)

Anyways, I wanted to try your Quinoa Salad recipe today, but, since I’m vegan, I made a few modifications – with a Thai flavored twist!

    - Saute chopped onions and chili pepper in a little bit of olive oil.
    - Add cubed tofu and saute on medium heat until golden brown.
    - Toss in some chopped pineapple and a few cashews.
    - Add cooked quinoa.
    - Reduce heat and add some seasonings (I used curry and turmeric, like in your video)
    - In the last minute, add some chopped cilantro.

Keep mixing everything as you add ingredients.
I really enjoyed this healthy meal! Thank you for the great idea!

I just want to thank you for your great workouts, diet tips, etc. You are a great inspiration! I look forward to your future successes!

P.S. Please keep me updated with your 1-on-1 program. I am definitely very interested. :)

  • S

There’s so many different kinds of veggie grounds or patties etc that are really flavourful. I’m sure you can use those and/or even tofu with mushroom broth.

  • Jennifer

Hi Zuzana, I used to wear my husbands safety glasses when I have to cut more than one onion, that helped, but I didnt always remember to put them on. Now, I just keep my onions in the refrigerator and I haven’t had a problem in over a year.

Thank you for the tip on the portion sizing, especially when it comes to being mindful of what we will be doing in the next few hours. It makes TOTAL SENSE, don’t know why I didn’t think of that before. Have a good day!

  • Lisa

    For vegetarian alternatives,
Organic chicken stock or vegetable for the chicken sauce and tofu (or eggplants) instead of chicken :) but you’ll need to cook tofu for a little longer than you would with chicken, since it needs to soak all the flavors in.

  • Sveta

Looks tasty, will try it! I got a question though – is that your ENTIRE meal or do you usually have a small salad or a few raw veggies on a side? Or perhaps some fruit afterwords as a desert? Thanks.

  • Sveta

Talking about butter… There’s a saying, I cannot remember where I heard it from, but it sounds something like this – that the reason (and the secret) that the French food is so good is because their chefs use “butter, butter and more butter!”. Most people avoid butter because they think it’s very bad for them and they stick to the low-fat or no-fat margarine that sort of tastes like butter but doesn’t freeze in refrigirator and is less in calories (and fat, supposedly). What they don’t realize though is that those margarines are probably even worse and that if they have butter (just like almost anything else out there basically) IN MODERATION it will not do much harm. What’s a “non-fat” anyway? What kind of process is being used on all the foods out there to make them non-fat? Do they just squeeze the fat out of them? What do you think – is non-fat margarine any better than regular butter? I heard you say in the video that you’re not scared of fat because you eat small portions, but what’s your general opinion about butter? Thank you.

(cannot get enough of your site, you guys are THE BEST!)

  • ozziepossum

I love the look of this meal. I can’t wait to give it a try! And I love the fact that everything is from the ground, none of the packaged sauces etc. This is the way I like to cook but sometimes find it very difficult to come up with ideas. I will also be trying to use more spices in the future.

Good job guys. Btw, the picture quality in the video seemed a bit “off”!

Dee (Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, yum, yum yum!!)

  • Durc

WOW! your size proportion was so small compared to what I pack away…but your advice is sound but hard to do. I don’t eat breakfast, go to work, eat something at work if I have time and go home to eat. I think on a good day – I could finish that whole bowl of chicken. :)

  • http://facebook.com Todd

I have the answer what you guys need is a nice knife, go get a fourty dollar Wusthof 12cm and a sharpener. Sooo rigth on the every 2hrs. that what people don’t get it’s so important, I try.

  • tammy

hi zuzanna that looks really good i heard you say on your video your not really a good cook have you ever thought about creating a spot on your page where viewers can submit there healthy recipes for you and others to try? just a thought.

  • Beck

Hey Zuzana:) I just learned this, and found it really interesting. DID U KNOW WHY ONIONS MAKE U CRY? Onions contain sulfur, and cutting them releases it into the air. The sulfur combines with the liquid on your eyes and produces sulfuric acid, in your eyes. You cry because you are trying to dilute the strength of this acid with water. This is why wetting your fingers or whatever helps, because it absorbs the sulfer. LMfao, maybe you could just wear GOGGLES:P haha cant wait to try this recipe, i love making up my own foods.

  • d

this recipe looks really good :) i really love watching your videos and read ur articles, i even love reading your comments!! ur just such and inspiration that i always love to hear something new about your childhoood and how you overcame your problems.and i know that i sound like a stalker but i just totally idolize you!!
so thanks for the recipe, and i can’t wait to see you new workout.<3

    d

  • Yanna

No No No! Put a bowl or a glass of water in a cup and keep it close to where the onion is (off to the side)!!!!

    This will prevent cuts!

  • Yanna

I forgot to add – that should work as well because the chemical that the onion releases attacks water first – that is why we tend to tear up!

  • christine

    Dear Zuzana,
thank you for the nice and yummy recipe. i have a problem which i realy need your help.
i am working in an office which i have to sit for 8 hours front of the computer therefore i don’t know how to manage eating every 2 hours.but all i can say i am eating a very small bread with non fat cheese in the morning then a bar after 2 hours and for lunch just a portion and after that just a fruit or coffee but eventhough i eat less i am feeling full all the time and my stomach is always bloated and i can’t feet in my skinny jeans and i am not fat at all.
also i can’t eat vegetables or beans at all per my doctor do you have any idea what can i do regarding my diet and bloating part ?
also if i do just your six pack abb workout for 3 days a week and 3 days for butt is that enough basicaly 6 days a week or i have to change my routine of workout.
please help me you are like a doctor for me.
    Love
    Christine.

  • Vanessa

This might sound crazy to you, but use a bigger, sharper knife..you are slipping off the onion etc because the knife isn’t suited to the job..that’s why there are so many different knives out there..

I used to use any old knife, but my life got so much easier when I started using a high quality name brand knife that was the right size. I use about a 7″ Santoku knife.. it really is easier..

    Just a thought..

  • d

    vegetable broth maybe?

  • Ken

I notice that a lot of cooking shows in America (Food Network) avoid talking about the sauce, or juice, that come from meat because I guess it sounds gross. I’m glad you talked about “chicken sauce”!

  • Ken

You forgetting what celery is called was hilarious! Loved it!

I also liked your story about mushrooms. Please keep up the good work!

  • teresa

i was just thinking some vegetable broth! i will try it soon and let you know what i think :)

  • Heather b

Put the onion in the freezer for a little while before you are ready to cut it. The gas that the onion releases, is what makes you cry. The cold temperature stops the process for a little while. Also, the end is the most potent, so cut that last. I hope this helps!
    Heather

  • http://google edoardo

I tried this myself and is very light but at the same time very tasty, exactly lyke you’ve said.
Thank you very much for all your suggestion on how to live an healty life. All of us should be gratefull to you.

  • http://reshapingmelissa.blogspot.com/ Melissa

This looks good! I’m a vegetarian so I’ll have to find a substitute for the chicken, any ideas?

  • http://reshapingmelissa.blogspot.com/ Melissa

You could try a vegetable broth! (meant to reply to this one!)

  • inna

how did u and ur husband meet

  • Matthew

Judging by that portion size, what I ate for dinner tonight could feed Z for a week!

  • Sandra

Thanks Zuzana! This looks great! I’m going to try it out soon. It gets boring to eat chicken the same way everyday which is unfortunately what I do.

  • Shannon L.

    Hi Zuzana.
You are very right about portion size. So many people will ask me how I stay thin (besides excercising) and I tell them “well if your going to be sitting down all day at work and them come home and do nothing, you don’t need to eat so much food? How much you eat should determine your level of activity thoughout the day.” I personaly don’t eat 5 small portions a day but if im not going to be doing much of anything, im not going to be eating much of anything either.
It’s not like im starving myself either, if im hungry… don’t worry I will eat :) but when your stomach is small inside, it can only hold so much food. There have been times when I did eat a lot and it really hurts my stomach so bad that I need to go for a walk to process it though and then lay down in bed for a while.
Most people who always eat big portions all the time don’t understand this because they have stretched their stomachs out and they now need to eat a lot in order to feel full.

I have heard that if you want to know what your portion size should be for eating, it should be as big as your fist because that is really all you need to feel full… and of course you should be eating this kind of portion size 4-5 times a day.

  • Lydia

Zuzana food looks great! Try putting the onion in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before you chop it that should do the trick. Also they actually sell onion goggles :) but they look kinda funny.

  • C. Angel

    Zuzana,

This recipe looks out of this world! It’s full of my favorite things, and I’ll be trying this one in the near future.

Over the last couple of months – and especially since discovering your site – I’ve really started to look at food differently. I look at as more of a functional thing, and what do I need today, how much, etc. As a result I’ve been doing more cooking, putting more heart into what I eat, and enjoying is as the fuel for my life. My relationship with food is much healthier.

This dish is an example of that to me. It has everything you need in it. It’s well balanced, whole food, and it isn’t skimping on flavor. There’s even bread and butter in it! How amazing is that.

    Thanks for another great recipe.

  • Lydia

try using portabella muchrooms they’re nice and meaty and the give off a nice broth when you add the water.

  • Rhiannon

hahaha I cracked up when I read this

  • Rhiannon

That looks yum. I jumped on the computer to look up a good workout routine for tonight and now all I can think about is food, ahhhhh!!!
I’m gonna try this dish tomorrow. But I can’t sleep if I eat such a small portion for dinner :(
Do you ever eat red meat or is it no good for being slim?

  • Christy

I will have to try this as I am not sure what I think of apples paired with tomatoes and/or broccoli (and/or mushrooms). I like all of those ingredients independent of one another, though.

I agree to some extent with Maryh – it would be nice to have some idea of measurement whether by weight or volume to accompany the photograph. It is *very* hard to argue with the numbers on my food scale and *very* easy to exaggerate the portions on my own dinnerware because “it is hard to tell” what a serving is… (cheating is easy/restraint is often not).

Keep up the good work! I do appreciate all of your videos and comments!

  • ~Mary Liz~

I was reading some of the comments about the portion size. I started eating small portions every two hours because I was sick (years ago), but I have learned it really is more healthy for anyone. I think your portion size is good. The plate is so big and makes it look tiny though. I tend to use a pie plate instead, and it helps me. It makes me feel like I have a plate full of food and inspires me stop eating when the hunger stops. The only thing I wasn’t sure about what the three hours

later to eat. There are times lately when I eat a 1/2 apple and a stick of string cheese, then I can barely make it until two hours later to eat again. I drink lots of water, so it baffles me. I also have issues with stir fry type dishes. I seem to feel hungry right after eating those (even w/ quinoa). I have tried eating a piece of fruit afterward but then it just feels like I am over eating. I am up at 6am so I eat at least 7-8 times durring the day, everyday.

Maybe my problem is that I don’t eat enough in the afternoon which makes me more hungry in the evening, or the extra stress I have right now but I feel like I’m falling off the band wagon with my eating habits grr. Have you ever had this issue and what did you do about it?? I mean, two months ago a tiny portion of carb/protein was perfect… now, it leaves me feeling weak and hungry and even frustrated.

  • Lana

    Hey Zuzanna,
I am horrible with cutting onions too, I always cut my finger. But then my Mother told me to put a wet kitchen cloth/rag under the chopping board and it never slips or moves anymore. Good luck and thank you for the recipe and all the workouts! You have no idea how much you are of an inspiration to me!

  • Karol1

A trick to not cry when peeling onion and garlic is to put a silver tea spoon in your mouth while chopping. It works you can chop through lots and lots and not cry.

  • Lorrie

PLEASE! Get that girl some proper cooking implements. That tiny knife scares me. Frederick…buy her a set of Whustof-Trident cooking knives…http://www.wusthof.com/desktopdefault.aspx/wlang-8/wlang-2 That is why she is cutting herself all the time. I know you care about her, you’ve bought her nice work out clothes, nice casual clothes…now buy her a good set of cooking knives. I love mine, btw.

You put the onion in the fridge for awhile to deter the sulfur irritating your eyes and crying. When you cut an onion, NO WATER!…that only makes it slippery and dangerous. It does not stop the crying. Cut it in half, lay it on the flat, cut side down, hold your palm on the rounded side WITH FINGERS UP AND OUT OF THE WAY, cut horizontally back to the root but NOT INTO THE ROOT, then cut downward slits to make cubes HERE IS A VIDEO LESSON!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDjNl5gs4nM

Poor Zuzana…I hope you don’t cut yourself anymore.

  • Dai

Does all of the bread get crunchy while it’s in the oven?
I want to try this but have never combined fruit and nuts with something like chicken and vegetables.

Hi Zuzana, do you still eat Burgol? You posted a video a while ago and showed that you ate that for dinner. Because it was a while ago and you said your diet has changed, would you still recommend Burgol? I mean do you still believe it is healthy? I love this recipe by the way! Thanks for sharing.

    Sarah,

You could be a little bit more constructive don’t you think? hating on someone’s personal blog.

Anyway, if you were eating (clean and nourishing food) 6 times a day you would be eating small amounts of food too. Zuzana is a small person she has mentioned that before and her portions are not necessarily yours.

  • http://www.bodyrock.tv/ Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

    yes I do

  • Rutele

    Hello, How are you?
Thank you Zuzana :) Well how was your lunch?
I will try to make this recipe, because i nearly away from kitchen butter, cheese. :) I will try to use these products sometimes, :)
Well Zuzana, have you ever tried AGAVE syrup? I bought yesterday,I read from The eat clean diet, that its very good :) I add in my oat meal, or on whole grain bread, its tasty :)

By the i remember, in my country Lithuania, my family always in August pick up mushrooms, they are so so tasty… hmmm. Our summer time home is beside beautiful forest, ohhh amazing :)

    Well, good luck :)

    LOTS OF LOVE

No, only on the top. Inside it should be doughy.

  • http://www.bodyrock.tv/ Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

You shouldn’t feel hungry weak and frustrated tho. Eating small portions doesn’t mean that you will be starving yourself. If you feel hungry then you need to eat more. If you are worried about gaining weight then eat some fruit/vegetable salad.

It is your choice of course if you want to weigh your food or count calories, but I am not a fan of that approach and I don’t even know anything about it – I am also remaining an ignorant on purpose. My advice is: Listen to your body. I don’t weigh my food. My grandma didn’t even think about weighing her portions. That is just thinking of today’s society, because people don’t trust their own instincts and body anymore, because you read everywhere that you need a nutritionist to tell you what to eat and how much to eat. This makes eating complicated rather than enjoyable which is causing people emotional problems.

I am glad that you are enjoying your progress, but it would be misunderstanding to think that I look at food as it was just a fuel to my body. It has deeper meaning for me than that. Eating something very tasty is a pleasure as well isn’t it?

  • J

how did you go on beating your time in the old workout?

  • Garry

Looks tasty (not keen on extra chopped off finger parts though…LOL). Thanks for sharing your recipes, I’ll try and post some of my favourites up for you. My wife and I are going to try this one today. Eating six meals a day is definitely all in the planning. I tend to plan meals the day before so that I don’t end up snacking on rubbish foods.

Thanks again and keep up the good work you guys.

I’m glad I know the recommended portion now because I had no idea before.

Thanks Zuzana for the delicious recipe. One trick I use to make it seem like I’m eating more when I am not is to use a smaller plate. When I do this I feel like I am eating more because it fills up the whole plate but in reality it’s a small portion. Your eyes play tricks on you and really I am fully satisfied. lol

  • MzSlyde

    Hello Zuzana –
I have been checking out your blog and absolutely love it. Thank you for all that you do on here.
I love to cook and this recipe is just wonderful. I am so excited to try it out. I love every single item you put into this. I can already tell it is going to be yummy.
We go mushrooming where I am from too. But it only lasts for about 3 – 4 weeks in early spring – That is the only time we can get them here – They are called Moral mushrooms and they are the best.
    Lots of Love

    hey Christine,

How awful the bloated stomach feeling :( I read that you eat cheese (albeit low fat) as well as a bar (I am assuming a power or granola bar). Have you considered that you might be lactose intolerant? The best way for me to get a bloated stomach is to eat anything that has dairy in it.

All i can say to you after reading your message is that you should consider making sure each meal you eat has some complex carbs (oats, rice, potatoes, bread, pasta, beans, fruits, veggies, etc), protein (yoghurt, lean meats, fish, tofu, beans (yes they are also a source of protein, nuts (unsalted), eggs (i’d try and stick to the white part if you are going to have many)) and some natural fats (olive oil, fat found in avocado, coconut oil, etc). You need to have that in your plate. Stick to small portions throughout the day.

Avoid eating things that were made in a factory as much as possible. Many have colorants, additives, (fake) sugars and all sorts of other things that have no business being in your body. AND they are also full of hidden calories.

I have worked for years at an office and what I did w as invest in a cooler bag. They have pretty ones these days that look just like pretty bags. :)

What I did was cook in the weekend and put things in small packages that I could take with me.

If you are at a place where it is for example a problem to eat foods like meats and stuff during mid morning or mid afternoon, you could opt for example for taking nuts, fruits and make your mid morning/afternoon snack, something like a hand full of nuts and a piece of fruit. You do not bother anyone with the smell and you eat it with no fuss.

If smell is not a problem, you could also take a few hard boiled eggs and a piece of fruit as your morning and afternoon snack. Lunch would be at your own discretion, but make sure it is clean.

Check Zuzana’s diet tab on the site and if you want, also check this out for a few recipe ideas: http://www.eatcleandiet.com/food_and_recipes/clean_recipe.aspx

    Hope it helps

  • Eva

    Hi !

I enjoy your diet recipes videos as much as your workout vidz :)
And it’s so nice to hear stories about your family, childhood, anecdotes…

About portions : when i was young and a teenager and that i was invited into someone’s house for a good meal, people felt almost insulted that i ate so small portions compared to them. I always had to deal with comments and i always had to justify myself that I loved their meal (which was 100% true cause i’m easy to please!!) but that I was full. Because I was full. In fact those days I had a better understanding of my body, i didn’t even think about portions i just stopped when it was too much. I’m 24 now and after some years of unbalanced diet/lifestyle I’m able to understand my body again (and it feels soooo good).

  • http://www.edgarcayce.org/health/database/health_resources/therapies_dietbasic.asp Drew

The only issue I have is with combining cheese, meat and bread in the same meal, well, also the apples. Edgar Cayce (widely considered the father of holistic medicine edgarcayce.org) recommended never eating ‘raw’ apples with any other food. Although I suppose that may not apply to cooked apples. And I seem to recall that cheese and meat should never be take together, but maybe that’s cheese and bread. Anyway, cheese, bread AND meat all in the same meal are definitely not recommended. Yep, that’s right, pizza is the worst. You know it just occurred to me that MY diet seems to leave me a little confused. lol (Frederick, you lucky man!) (oh yeah, set up a small fan to blow across the cutting area when you’re cutting onions, and keep the tips of those fingers curled in and the knife resting against the knuckles, short cutting strokes)

  • Paula/New Jersey

Christine, I work in an office as well. I bring in string cheese, greek yogurt and almonds for my “snacks. I have the yogurt mid morning and then either string cheese or a handful (not a whole bag) of almonds in the afternoon.

  • Margarita

My mom told me that if you store onions in the fridge, they won’t make your eyes in tears so much. Onions should be cold in order not to make you cry when you chop them.

  • Brooke B

tempeh would be awsome for all you vegetarians. its a lot firmer than tofu and has a nutty sweet taste to it…very yummy….and also a mushroom broth with onions and all the liquids from the vegtables once you steam them….that would be great to put over the bread YUMMY!

  • Audra Gatti

Yup, don’t overcomplicate things. It takes 10 times to make it a habit. You’ll get used to smaller portions especially if you eat more often.

  • liz

    Hi Zuzana

Do you have sugar in your coffee?

  • Audra Gatti

    Hi Zuzana,

Try curling you fingers in slightly when you cut anything. That way you won’t slice your fingers. I agree w/Lorrie, don’t wet the onion it’s slippery enough as it is.

As far as the onion making your eyes cry. I like to burn a candle close by (scented or unscented, I like vanilla). It will burn off some of the sulfur coming from the onion.

    Hope this helps,
    Audra

  • Rawkins

Yes! Exactly correct. I think I mentioned last time about how to keep yourself from crying because of the onions, but I forgot to mention that the blade you use also helps with this. You want to cut the onions with the absolutely sharpest blade possible to prevent backing away at them and releasing more acid –> gas in the process.

But for what it’s worth I am also always hurting myself in the kitchen too. I don’t so much cut myself (well except for one ER-inducing trip) but the rest of the time it’s burns … the last two night included!!!

A few people have commented that they are not sure about the use of apples in this recipe. I think they should try it because I think they will be pleasantly surprised. My wife sometimes uses fruit and nuts in unusual ways in her cooking and it is always delicious. The first time I saw her put grapes in a salad I thought she was crazy but now its one of my favorite things. Sometimes a hand full of chopped nuts or dried cranberries can change the whole character of a recipe.

  • http://bodyrocktv jason landers

hi zuzanna, i bet that smells wounderful! i’m gonna try it. but my biggest problem is eating small portions, i have a real challenge of doing that. but i’ll try. have a good day!

  • SisterWorks

Don’t free pour the oil, cut back on the butter. Essentially, it looks like a chicken stuffing.

  • Nelya

This looks delicious! I wanted to give you another tip for the onion cutting process. Try lighting a candle and putting it close where you are cutting the onions. That definitely helps me. :)

Thank you again to both of you for everything that you do for us!

    YOU ROCK BODYROCK!!!!

  • SisterWorks

Also, I agree that you should go to a knife store and buy a quality, sharp knife. Your hands aren’t positioned right, which is why you keep on cutting yourself. Watch a few videos online about proper cutting technique. You always want to half onion, lay it on the flat stable side and then slice down. Curl your finger tips in so you don’t slice off the tips of your finger. :)

  • dani

    Hi Zuzana,

Thanks for the new body weight interval workout. I LOVE the fact that there are only four rounds but more exercises – I don’t have a cool Gymboss timer (just ordered one though) so it’s really hard to keep track of the 8 rounds after about 4 of them! Love the variety of all 10 exercises to keep from boredom.

  • Stephy

Invest in one really good butcher’s knife for your kitchen and keep in sharp and you will actually get cut less. I know it sounds counter intuitive but a good sharp knife is safer than a dull one. Then you can stop cutting yourself! :o)

  • Mickela

Hi again I just thought about the question that was asked above regarding making this in a vegetarian version. Use white beans and for the sauce, a can of vegetable broth, I think it would still be tasty this way.
Although I prefer Zuzana’s version with the chicken.

Mushrooming in the forest..it sounds like such good times and irreplacable memories..( the photos that of the food look like in a cook book they are beautiful).

  • teresa

oooh! great idea. i love portabellos!

  • Samantha

Zuzana, I think you’re the first person who’s ever advocated thinking before you eat. You don’t seem to restrict yourself on what tastes good (I made your apple bread thing, it was amazing) but you consider what your body needs in terms of physical activity today and gauge your portions accordingly.

What a (surprisingly) fresh way to think about eating!

  • http://bodyrock.tv Nancy S.

Sarah, I also cracked up when I read this, and I didn’t consider it “hating on someones blog”. I saw it as a comment on how far off the rest of us are in our eating patterns. I feel your pain!

  • Amy

    Ahoj Zuzko,

  • Zazu

This looks good! I wanted to try this, but in order to save on time (and cuz I’m lazy :P) could we not combine all the ingredients together raw, ofcourse with the exception of the chicken?

When you were talking about the mushroom picking, the first thing that came to my mind was poisonous mushrooms. Were there any cases of mushroom poisoning? Or did people know which ones to avoid?

  • Krista

Christine, if you are bloated all the time and you are not eating much (from what you listed, you are not), I would go to your doctor and ask to be tested for Celiacs Disease. This is a gluten intolerance condition that causes constant bloating in the lower intestine. You listed bread as one of the items in your diet. Gluten is in wheat, oats, barley and rye. I am not a medical doctor but I do have Celiacs. Your symptoms are very similar to mine prior to my diagnosis. Since changing my diet to gluten free, I can’t begin to tell you how my life has changed. More energy, weight loss, overall healthier and happier. Good Luck… Krista

  • Geodfreid ManSon

Put your own two hands together like as if you were going to be scooping up water in your hands so that you could hold as much water in your hands as possible.

Now use that same posture with your two hands and scoop up hand fulls of grain.

There now that is your portion size……

For me, I am a six foot tall man one hundred ninety five pounds and I have large hands.
My scoop size is about two hundred sixty five to two hundred seventy five Ml

    Easy huh????
That should be your largest volume that you eat at one meal when you will be active after eating,,,,and then go down from there when you will be sitting behind your computer or going to bed within three hours,,,Just like Zuzana said

  • Kirsty

I think that this is just your perception. If your used to eating a huge plateful of food then yes, it is going to look very small indeed. I am a personal trainer and nutritional consultant in Scotland, a country where we like our food and a lot of it! I tell me clients that if they find it difficult to put a small amount of food on a large plate then choose a small plate, your head will then tell you that it has more food on it. I think that this is all in peoples heads. Zuzanna is so very very correct, if you eat little and often you are actually less likely to gain weight and you keep your energy levels up.
I think another mistake a lot of people make is that they don’t drink enough water. When we are dehydrated our bodies give of the same signals that we feel when we are hungry. So often just drinking plenty of water instead of eating unesecary food will stop us gaining extra weight.
Finall we nutrition tip…chew, chew, chew your food. The enzymes in your saliva help break the food down making it easy for you body to extract the nutrients and move the the rest out.
Sorry to rant on, but nutrition is just so important.
    Kirsty xxx

for the onions, you could try breathing with your mouth and not with your nose while cutting them. for me it works most of the time :)

    Hi Zuzana,

I enjoyed the cooking demonstration very much, thank you! It was nice to hear about your family back in the Czech Republic and how they viewed mushrooms. It reminded me so much about my extended family back in Italy and how they always used to go out to pick wild mushrooms in the hills. However, I almost got poisoned one time when I was back there visiting. We made a mushroom pizza to die for. Thankfully I didn’t die:), but I’ll never forget that experience for the rest of my life. That’s probably why I will no longer touch wild mushrooms. Anyway, great recipe and I love your workouts!!

    Hey Zuzana,

Delicious, delicious, delicious, keep those recipies coming,
Thank you soo much for sharing. Is there any chance you could give me a sample of your food plan for a whole day, breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner and snack. I am stuck in a bit of a rut, my typical food plan for the day is, bowl of branflakes with skimmed milk, fresh orange & glass of water, snack – 2 slice w/w toast & boiled egg with cup of tea, lunch – salad with either ham or boiled egg and a cup of coffee, snack – chopped apple, banana, grapes and greek yogurt, dinner – usually veg meat & potatoes & glass water. Last snack 2 slices w/w toast and tea.

Loving your workouts, I actually look forward to working out ha!!!!

    Keep up the good work!!!!

Same here. Sometimes I feel hungry after just an hour of eating. To be honest I think it is hyperacidity. I’ve noticed it most especially after eating fruits. I am myself still trying to solve this.

  • http://www.bodyrock.tv/ Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

    Hi Elle,

with respect to you and all nutritionists, I think that I know the best what and how much should I eat. I have been eating this way for 2 years and my physique, energy and immune system has improved since. I know what works for me. What is interesting is that there are other nutritionists who have been posting comments about my portions and they thought that my approach is perfectly fine. As a nutritionist, based on one shot of my plate without even meeting me or doing any sort of examination or overview of my physiology, how can you possibly come to this kind of conclusion?

  • Gina

First of all I want to say thank you for the wonderful recipe! Our diet at home seems to be mostly meat and carbs and I am forever looking for ways to incorporate more vegetables while still keeping it tasty. I will definitely try this one! I hope you post more and more recipes :)

Secondly, nice to hear Frederick’s voice!

  • Gina

Oh Zuzana, I forgot to ask. I know how you feel about low fat stuff and I completely agree. Even the taste gives it away. However the one low fat thing that I must have is mayonnaise. I have the light or even the extra light if I can get it. What do you think of this? My family always has to have mayonnaise in their sandwiches and this is the only way to keep all those calories off.

  • Gina

    thanks for the link! :)

    Christine:
If your doctor is telling you that you cannot eat vegetables of beans then he is an idiota…
Find yourself a different doctor, or do as you said and listen to what Zuzana is telling you/us.
Do you comprehend that when doctors go through med school that they don’t usually have more then one week studies in nutrition and most of the time is spent being indoctrinated by the pharmaceutical companies that sponsor most of the schools how to get them to subscribe med’s to their Guinna pigs/ patients?

Do you not comprehend that the doctors are just “PRACTICING” MEDICINE ON YOU?

99% of the population out there have liver stones clogging up their livers, making their livers not work properly.

  • Christine

    Dear Carla,Paula and Krista,
thank you very very much for all the information that you have provided for me i realy realy appreicate.
I will listen to your advises.
    Christine.

  • Geodfreid ManSon

Take another look at Zuzana’s body ,,and then tell her to cut back on the oil and butter….Yah right!!!

Did you not listen to what she said about the fats?

Go back and watch the vid again.

  • Stephen

I would say the “correct” portion size is simply the one which will leave one moderately hungry in two to three hours time.

  • Geodfreid ManSon

    Make your own mayo…
And then you have the control of the oil that you use.
I use grape seed oil.. it is kelated vitamin e.

And you also know that it is fresh.
But will only last a few days.
And your own fresh mayo tastes much better anyway. “)

BTW most of those commercially made Mayo’s are made from soy and canola oils, and are not fit for human consumption.

  • maryh

    Hi again,,
i asked you a question earlier about weighing food to guage the portion size really as for me…i thought this would be the super easy way of judging the approximate size.
I would only do this once/twice to get used to the smaller portions sizes you advice. (Not to obsessively over-complicate matters). i have a kitchen scales for baking etc. and the advice to use your hands/palm/fist etc. is more complicated to me.
I’d get emotional problems this way for sure LOL..i wouldnt’ want to get my hands dirty or ruin my dinner trying to fit it into my palms. :P

My Grandmothers also would have had a more natural relationship with food without over-analazying it but they would have had some method of measuring the amounts of their ingredients etc. (use a kitchen cup or something)-they had bigger portions of food for sure and neither of them looked like you either. Theres really no comparison :) Thats the only reason why i asked re:weight of portion size.
i also think i may be misreading your advice somehow because i thought you said to base the portion size more on what you’ll be doing for the next 2-3 hours rather than on ‘listening to your body’. i got the impression you ‘train’ yourself to eat this way. :$ i know you say to do both but one seems more ‘logical’ the other more based on ‘feelings’. i dont’ think these two concepts are always compatiable.
    Help !!! I NEED A NUTRITIONALIST !!! :D :P

  • John

What is your opinion of eating raw verses roasted nuts? I was my understanding that when you roast them it damages the oils and you lose some of the health benefits.

  • ozziepossum

Zuzana, I agree with you. How anyone could possibly judge you by how large your portion on your plate is, well, it’s ridiculous. Only YOU know how your body feels after you’ve eaten. And if Elle had read your previous posts, she would realise that you eat 6 healthy, nutritious meals a day.

Why do we all think that we need to eat such large portions? Our stomachs are smaller than what is on our plate usually. It’s an American way of life where they feel that they need to stuff themselves silly numerous times a day!

We should eat what is healthy as our body gains health benefits only from good, nutritious foods. If we are still hungry, our body will tell us! If you feel satiated after a small portion, that’s your body saying, thanks, I’m done!

Dee (Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, where is my coffee?)

  • ozziepossum

    Hi Christine,

I’m very much like you and sit in front of a computer for 12 hours a day. Working out what to eat and when was always a nightmare but I have worked out a plan for myself, maybe it might work for you too! I try and eat every 2 and a half to 3 hours. I pack my lunches most days too. I have breakfast at home, then when I’m at work I choose from the following (every 2 – 3 hours):

    - 3 x hard boiled egg whites with one whole hard boiled egg
    - almonds, sometimes mixed with dried cranberries or raisins for a sugar hit.
    - rice cakes with cottage cheese
    - salad with tuna (no dressing, only lemon juice) or salad sandwich with turkey.

I also have 1 or 2 skinny or soy lattes during the day.

    Hope this helps

Dee (Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oy Oy Oy!!)

  • Antonia

    Hi Ellie,

we all due respect; we need to talk! Are you ok? I am sorry but you are comming accross with a sence of urgency that seems with no offence a little out in left field.
As a nutritionist you do understand portion control right? Close your eyes and picture 6 times the ammount that you see on the plate. People that are starving get 1 – the whole day! She is eating 6 times a day! Now think of this; put the amount on the plate YOU wish for her to eat and I imagine would fill the whole plate. Now have her eat that 6 times a day and she would be like the little girl who turned into bluberry in willy wonka!
Again; there are thousands of people watching her day in and day out. ALL 99.9 percent remark how FIT and healthy she is. DO you think thousands of people would say that if it wasnt true? This is why people are attracted to the sight because people have issue with food and are looking for help and the proof is in the pudding!
You dont have to be a nutritionist to be educated. There is education in abundance. News programs have brought out many times in the last years that portions are too big.
I am suprised that a nutrionist would be worried no offence. It seems they would be commenting on also the meal itself and the abundance of nutrients that you see in this dish!
Zuzana is super fit dear and we all wish we could be as well. She is also petite and is tight which gives her the doll-like figure that we see. It is also a plus for her because when she does turn 50 60 70 she will fair better from having stayed in shape! It is sooo much more difficult to get in shape then to stay in shape.
I hope you feel better, your fear was scaring me!:o

    Zuzana,

I just have to say that I absolutely love your hair! Haha. I wish you would do a video tutorial on how you style it =) It isn’t pin straight its nice and a little wavy! This must sound silly but I have been visiting your site ever since August and I always thought I loved your hair so I thought I would gather up the courage to ask you how you style it!

P.S. Thanks for the awesome recipe! I am so excited to try it! Good job on the website! I go on in multiple times a day I just can’t get enough of it! =)

Hi Zuzana. I’m a 27yo guy, and I want to get into shape. I don’t know where to write, if you only read the comments on these new videos. I’m not fat, but i’ve probably got around 15% body fat right now. I wish to get your defined look, or near it, but with a guy’s body type. What should I do? I’ve been working out for 2 months now 3 times a week, with very heavy weights and I basically do 5*5 reps on squats and chest press with some variation. I feel like I’ve gotten a lot stronger just in this time, but I don’t want to end up with a “bulky” or “big” look. I wish top be “ripped”. Do you have any ideas? Food is not a problem for me since I’m a vegetarian. Peace! /Henrik

  • Chris

    Hi Zuzana;

Thanks for the recipe. I’m hoping recipes become a regular part of your website.

Also Thanks to Drew; (I wasn’t familiar with that potion of Cayce’s work) and the earlier poster regarding the YouTube video; on knife safety. Regarding that; I’m a noob in the kitchen and usually just use two bread knifes. It’s probably not the most efficient way to prepare meals; but they work for me and I’ve yet to loose a finger. Something similar to what I use can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/Oxo-Professional-5-Inch-Serrated-Utility/dp/B000A13OD4/ref=pd_rhf_shvl_41

One thought before I run Zusana. Have you ever thought of having part of your site be a poster board for your follows/members? Perhaps it could have before and after photos of those who use your workouts and videos. You could see how your workouts and videos are affecting us and we could showcase our hard work and effort.

I just really wanted to comment on all the comments directed at Zuzana’s portion size in this video. I have studied nutrition for probably 7 solid years now and researched a lot of topics relating to portion control and sufficient portion sizes. Americans eat WAY too much (as a general rule) at a single sitting than what I understand many other countries do. And, we eat often fast food and we all know how super-sized those servings are becoming from year to year. Zuzana is probably one of the best examples , in my opinion, of what proper nutrition can do for a woman’s physique and appearance. She is not sunk in, she is not vitamin deficient, she is not dried up like someone who is not properly hydrated or fed…she is vibrant, clear skinned, bright eyed, vivacious, full of life as someone would be that was properly nourishing their body!!! To those nutritionists that commented on her portions being “too small” and that she needs to eat…this is not her only meal!! She is suggesting to take the normal larger portions that most of us eat and diminish them in size but eat more OFTEN so it probably equals out to near what a smaller person would eat. That is helpiing her metabolize her food better and giving her more energy…she is right on! Smaller portions more often (like every 2-3 hrs) is the best advice out there, and the most sound. She is eating the clean foods and she is not working out for 2-3 hours a day. She will not lose her muscle, she eats protein, and like she said it works for her. She ought to know her body A LOT more than any of us in far away places. And just look at her, she knows she’s doing right by herself and she’s happy with her progress and strength. Don’t let these comments distract you from what’s important, staying healthy and not getting caught up with counting calories or stuffing your face…

  • Dani

Hey zuzana that recipe looks delicious :)
i was just wondering if you dont have time to eat every 2 hours, should your portion sizes be a bit bigger? because i go to school and have a heavy training schedule so i dont really have time to eat every 2 hours. what do you think?

  • http://www.myspace.com/alysimpson Aly

If you want to save your fingers buy a food processor. You can chop without chopping your fingers. Ouch! Be careful :)

  • http://www.janetspreiter.com Janet

This looks really yummy. I will try this.
By the way, thanks for showing me what a “small portion” really is according to your definition. I need to downsize by about half! I was wondering how you could possibly be interested in eating every two hours…now I see! I like your comment on eating less helps with spiritual energy. I hadn’t thought of it quite that way. :) Good stuff, all of it. Thank you!!!

Hi..in response to Christine who was complaining of a ‘bloating problem’……

    http://www.everydayhealth.com/digestive-health/foods-that-cause-excessive-gas.aspx?xid=nl_EverydayHealthHealthyLiving_20090828

i relate exactly to what your saying..i was in agony after eating one apple just recently. I actually love apples but cannot eat them.
i think it is because they are so high fiber, with fructose and sorbitol. Like you i dont do well with beans, and also for me ALOT of different usually very healthy foods do not agree with me.
Anything too high fiber..even more than one ryvita cracker can have me bent over double in excruitating pain and feeling 20 months pregnant.:/ White bread suits me better than wholegrain unfortunately. i try to balance as best i can but basically anything too high fiber on an empty stomach is a nightmare.
Some vegetables and fruits are kinder than others e.g.
Carrots, butternut squash, spinach, turnip, mushrooms, tomato sauce are kinder than broccoli/cauliflower/bell peppers/asparagus i can only have a tiny bit of onion/garlic also. i try to combine ‘kind’ with the ‘not so kind’ ones.
There is a lady online called ‘Heather’ who helps with IBS problems such as this and some of her advice helped me too.

    http://www.helpforibs.com/

Some fruit yoghurts are bloat- inducing too. Not all however.
Rice/oats (unless gluten intolerant) are peace-ful foods usually. Brown rice especially :D
Multi-vitamins with pro-biotics are thought to be helpful also.
Not leaving long gaps between meals too a la Zuzanna’s advice is very helpful & make sure your not constipated. hahah. :P (so embarassing to even say that.)If you are kiwi fruits help alot. LOL
Chai tea (Indian) has lots of lovely spices which help with bloating like ginger etc. it tastes lovely and sweet too and has no sugar but things like cinamom. Also Chamomile, fennel, peppermint herb teas. you can find these in healthshops. Hope some of this is useful.
p.s. i hope this all this info. is not too overwhelming to you & that you feel alot better soon. God bless and
the best of luck Sister x

Hi Guys, great site. A lot of ideas here, thank you for sharing. My question is for Fredrick, hope you dont mind Zuzanna. Fredrick, what camera do you use for your stills? The quality is excellent. Also I noted that you have some lights setup for the camera work inside. Can you advice which ones you use and if you would recommend them? Thanks Mate.

  • Antonia

oh and Elle..there a certain ways to treat that bite you got natuarally ..(from the green eyed monster)

  • Gio

    Hi Zuzana,
Congrats on your blog and your nice body. I would recommend you to try a onion chopper, you could use some of them also for some of the vegetables http://www.houseware-ningbo.com/pic/72008511143459.jpg

  • Amber

Thanks for giving me inspiration for my workout! I can’t believe you only workout 20 minutes 5 days a week and look like that. I’ve been working out an hour a day but I am now reconsidering how I workout and trying to be more efficient like you! What a great idea to combine cardio and ST!

I wanted to let you know that Tupperware sells something called the Quick Chef that dices an onion in like 10 seconds. It’s amazing and you aren’t left crying and cut! I just bought one and am able to add tons more veggies to my meals because of the ease of dicing!

  • http://www.bodyrock.tv/ Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

Half burpee is without push up and I also don’t jump into a squat but rather stick my butt up in the air :) so it’s like jumping into a spike. And you just gave an idea for a new exercise so thanks! ;)

  • ansidhe

    Ahoj Zuzanko a Fredericku,
(damn! how I just adore this slavic vocative ;>>>)

you might wanna consider pre-marinating your meat before you actually cook it. It’s not much of a chore, you just need to prepare the meat that you plan to use next day on the evening the day before. It greatly increases the taste factor, I can tell you :)! Just put the meat for the night in the fridge, in a deep plate or a bowl soaked in a marinate based on a desired mix of ingredients like squeezed lemon juice, milk, honey, salt, wine, beer, tea, onion juice (yeah, I know ;>), garlic (I noticed it’s on your ‘eatable’ list) or just anything that you would like your meat to suck the taste/aroma from. The only obligatory ingredient for a marinate to work is sth acidy, slightly salty or milky – to work deep into the meat. You can prepare all kinds of meat like that and the results will amazingly increase the blow-your-tastebuds effect of any of your meal.

Another thing that just came to my mind is a baking sleeve (unlikely the name it should be called in English but pls someone correct me here ;>!). What I mean is a relatively strong plastic foil in a form of a long sleeve sold in rolls of, say, 10 meters. It looks quite similar to the tin foil you’d use to wrap food in when eg. storing stuff in the fridge or for baking fish, for instance. Anyway, I’m sure you’ll be able to find it in your supermarket. What you do with that baking sleeve is you cut a 50cm piece of it, put your big piece of pre-marinated meat (think: a 0.5kg /1lb/ piece of boneless pork loin stuffed with prunes, a turkey breast, a couple of salmon slices/pieces), squeeze (separately) both open ends of the sleeve (with the meat inside) and pinch/close them with special pincers or just plain 2 pieces of kitchen wire (sold usually together with the baking sleeve but you can also get them with disposable plastic kitchen bags, eg. for frozen food), then cut a small hole/slot on top of the already created ‘huge candy with a meat piece inside’ and finally put it inside a pre-heated oven. The time/temperature settings would obviously depend on the type of meat used. Thanks to the sleeve, you get in effect a very juicy baked meat full of aroma plus some incredibly tasty juice at the bottom of the sleeve. Yummy :)!!!

Good luck with your adventures :)

  • http://www.bodyrock.tv/ Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

Thanks :) that’s really nice compliment, thank you. I think it is kind of funny, because I have absolutely no style. I don’t even let my hairdresser cut it. I just wash my hair and blow dry it without using a brush and my hair just stays like this :)

  • Alesya

    Hi Zuzanna,
I just want ask you.. do you drink alcohol or not at all?

  • Mike

    Hello Zuzana.

I’m not sure if anybody else provided this tip yet but if you put your onion in the fridge before you use it you won’t cry when you cut it. As long as it stays cold when you cut it the juices won’t evaporate and get in your eyes. They’ll start evaporating when you begin cooking them or if you get any on your hands while cutting them. If you get it on your hands just rinse them with water and you’ll stop crying. I hope that helps.

  • http://www.bodyrock.tv/ Zuzana – BodyRock.Tv

I drink white wine and sometimes I don’t mind a beer. I don’t like anything stronger, but if I get invited for a shot by my friend, I drink it.

  • Rachel

    Thanks for the recipe!

I tried it out and it was really yummy!!! I substituted 1/3 cup of whole wheat bread crumbs for the break to make a little lower carb, but delicious and easy!!

Love this site!! You’ve been such an inspiration for me since I discovered your workouts 3 weeks ago. I already notice a difference :)

    Thanks!

    Hi Zuzana!

I see that you’re always fighting with those onions. :)
Have you ever tried an onion comb/ quilling comb? If not, then pleeeease :) It is so easy to slice the onion with it, lot of my friends use it. (oh, and it is just a few dollars..)
I live in Europe (Hungary), but tried to search american links for you.

    Hi Mike,

I mentioned using the freezer, which is pretty much the same idea. You can also just leave the roots on the onion and that greatly reduces the juices flowing.

Anyway, I got to try this dish. It seems the prefect combo of my favorite veggies and fruits.

    Z-
We loved this! Next time I will try it w/ homemade sourdough, and kalmata olives instead of raisins just to mix it up. Really good, really easy. I can cut it all up in the morning, then we have great dinner w/in 1/2 an hour in the evening. Awesome!

  • Beck

Dont buy the slapchop!! It is very messy , I have one. It cuts onions in oblong messy slices, i dont even know how to explain it. It doesnt cut the skin, but it also leaves like two layers of onion uncut. If you really don’t care about wasting onion, if they are cut neatly, or if you have to clean it out, then i guess u could get it. It does cut them fast, but not very well. I hope this helps. PS. It doesnt work like it does in the commercials, its kindof a rip off.

    Hi Ozzipossum,

The truth is Elle knows that she eats well. She knows better than that and she might not even be what she said. The point is she wanted to cause her to doubt herself and trip herself up and basically was playing a game. Her motive was not concern at all. I have dealt with people like this who are insincere and it abuse really.

What foods and/or drinks do you prefer to consume pre- and post-workout?

  • Minerva

Oh my goodness Zuzana, please tell me how you got used to eating these mocroscopic portions. From the scale of the plate and the forks it looks like you are only eating about a cup of food. With a high activity level, how do you have the will to eat so little. I read in one of your blogs that it was hard for you to get used to eating less then you were before at a recommended calorie intake. I constantly have to measure my portions, on a scale, measuring cups and spoons so that I stay withing portions. I’ve been doing it for 4 years and I’, still hungry after my meal. I have to eat every three hours but I definately eat waaaaaay more that you do. How do you do it? How do you just stop after such a small meal?

  • Weronka

I have a question: My last meal is at 7/8 pm because I go sleep at 23/24 o´clock. My breakfast is between 8 and 11 am (depends when I have to wake up)…after these 10-14 hours NOT-EATING I am ALWAYS so hungry in the mornings. And though I have to eat 5-6 small portions a day I want to eat a COW in the mornings… You always have so nice recipes for lunch or dinner. May you say/show us what you are eating in the mornings when you dont do fitness? And of course what you eat when you have breakfast AFTER your workout?

  • grindin

Hey Zuzana, Thanks for all the inspirational workouts, etc. I’m very active i run surf bike skate do matial arts don’t drink or smoke and lift at least 3-4 days a week i love your cardio interval workouts they are quick and i’ll always be sore the next day. I continuosly struggle with my diet which is very frustrating so i checked out your chicken recipe. I was told to tuck my fingers to the middle knuckle when slicing and haven’t seen blood on the cutting board since ;) keep up the good work!

Chutnalo to velmi dobře, díky Zuzano.
Měl bych pro tebe malou radu. Na krájení čehokoliv a obzvláště cibule si kup jiný nůž. Dokud máš ještě všechny prsty. Obecně se jim říká “chef knive” – široké hladké ostří, délka kolem 20cm. Vyber si takový, aby ti rukojeť dobře padla do ruky. Pak už se neřízneš.
Předem díky za další recepty a videa se cvičením.

Looks like a fabulous recipe. You guys look like you are having a blast. Zuzanna is in phenomenal shape.

Site looks amazing, i’m inspired by your workouts

  • Ashley P

    Hi Zuzana,
I was listening to you when you said that eating 5 small meals a day is best. But for me it’s not so convenient. Because I’m in college, my schedule varies. That means I might have to be in school @ 10:00. Since I’m on a busline, that means I have to wake up earlier than usual which can be 6 or 7:00am. I eat breakfast at that time, and then I’m not able to eat til about noon or so. Then my next meal might not be til 7:00pm.

I guess what I want to know is, is there a alternative to the /6 small meals a day, especially with a hectic schedule like that? Do I have to follow that method if I’m tring to tone up?

  • nmw.nmw

I noticed you’re using a steak knife to cut your vegetables? Oh geez Zuzana! Get yourself a nice chef’s knife and a sharpener!!!! You have to fight/work hard with a steak knife and the blade is like / on the end which directs the knife to cut on an angle! No wonder you’re cutting yourself! :)

I never had a knife sharpener until last year and it changed my life :) When your knife is big and heavy and sharp it slices so easily – and you are more in control of it.

You’d think a bigger knife and sharper edge would lead to more cuts, but it’s the opposite. Trust me. Do it! :) You’ll never believe how much better chopping will be with a bigger, sharper knife. Say goodbye to squashed tomatoes and super slippy onion bits! And did you know that a “serrated” (ie. steak knife) rips the onion up more and makes your eyes water MORE? Well now you know :)

also if you don’t want onion-eyes slip on a pair of fashion glasses and that helps. Contact lenses make you impervious to onion-eyes!

also garlic becomes more healthful if you smash it, chop it and let it sit (oxidize) for 10 minutes. :)

    xoxo Nicole

    Hiya Zuzana and Frederick,

I’ve just made this dish and can’t wait for lunch to eat it. I will be dividing it up to take with me to work for the next couple of days too! Smells amazing! I substituted raisins with dried cranberries. Added walnuts and almonds. I probably didn’t add enough Cayenne as I was a little scared, so will add a little more next time if need be.

Love your recipes, I have tried most of them. Keep up the great work!

Dee (Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Yum, Yum, Yum!)

  • Lindsey

Zuzana!!! Thank you so much for this recipe!!! It is absolutely delicious!!! The spices balanced perfectly with the sweet apples. It was one of the best dinners that I have had in a while. I can’t wait to play around with different fruit and veggie combos! Thanks for the idea. Love your workouts too!!! I was wondering if you could offer any good breakfast recipes?

This might be said somewhere else on the site, but here it goes anyway:
Do you follow a strict diet plan, or do you just eat healthy food instead of junkfood – not thinking about how many proteins etc. you are getting?

  • Ines

Hey Agata, I’m a student too hehe and although the brain is only about 2% of the body in size, it consumes about 20% of total calories for example when ure studying. Carbs are what the brain needs for you to keep focused.

    Hi Zuzana,
I have a good muscle mass. And I tend to bulk up really easily. I eat healthy, and have been trying to eat leaner foods to get leaner. Do you have any recommendations for getting leaner in terms of working out and a nutrition plan?

  • Chris

She eats healthy, small portions and doesn’t keep track of calories or anything special.

    Hi nmw.nmw,

This is what I said! Well, not about the real chef knife. Which is also true. But, about a sharp knife is better than a dull one any day of the week!

You can cut an onion without tears just by cutting fast and leaving the roots on till you’re done dicing.

Zuzana, you should get a nice chef’s knife something with a blade at least 8 inches long. It should feel comfortable to hold and hold an edge.

    –Chris

  • Emily B.

    Hello Zuzana,

I just wanted to give you a bit of advice about the onions. I have found that if you eat a piece of candy ( a peppermint works best) while you cut it, it doesn’t make your eyes water as bad. I know it sounds crazy, but it works for me. Thanks again for a great recipe and amazing workouts :)

Trápí mě to hodně, chodím totiž do posilovny už možná třičtvrtě roku… Ale extra změny opravdu žádné…Prosím, jestli se opravdu orijentuješ i v tomhle, hrozně moc uvítám tvoji pomoc… S pozdravem Míša :)

    Hey Zuzana!!
LOVE YA! You are awesome! You and your Fredrick! I love your workouts! They are amazing!! Your an inspiration most def! I wanted to remind some folks out there that portion size is doable. I usually drink lots of water before I eat to give my stomach a chance to shrink if I’m trying to tighten my eating habits again. Also, if your a student or working, try to find a cooler and plan your meals according to your accessibility like, microwave, a refrigerator for storage. When I worked and took classes, I would have a ready made protein shake, packed in a cooler with ice and also had quick grab and go snacks like almonds, celery sticks, or a protein bar. I would cook one day a week and store all my food in containers and plan them out. That way I have NO excuses not to stick to my goals. Hope this helps some of you. It really works, I was totally against the notion at first but got frustrated I wasn’t able to make the strides I wanted until I finally gave in and prepared for the unexpected. I was able to eat every two to three hours and able to keep my control of my goals. Best of luck to all and Zuzana, KEEP ROCKIN!!!!-Jlon

Hi Zuzana! I just discovered your blog today!

I noticed that when you’re cutting, your fingers are sticking out. Keep them curled in (like in a knuckle), so you’ll be less prone to cutting yourself. Also, you should use a rocking motion with the blade of the knife, instead of cutting straight down (start with the point of the blade touching the cutting board and let the blade rock) This is safer, faster, and the knife does all the work for you! But I really love this blog! The workouts are intense and accessible. I’ll try this recipe too!

    Hi Zuzana! How are you?
Today I made this meal! Let me tell you: it was delicious! I am only 17 years old and this was the first time that I actually cooked! (eggs, spaghetti and rice doesn’t count, right? ehehe)
Thank you so much for everything :) I mean, this recipe and all the information provided here! I’ve changed my diet one week ago and started working out daily and I’m already seeing changes!
If you have time to answer this… Imagine that I normally work out in the evening (like 9/10pm or something)… because I go to bed at 11pm… After the workout, what should I eat? And/Or drink? I know it is important to eat right after working out, but since I’m going to sleep a bit after that, I don’t know what is the best to consume.
    Thank you,
All the best for you guys!
    :)

Hey ya’ll, I just wanted to say that I have found my motivation again to workout. I had been in a slump since November when I got sick. I ran across your videos on YT a couple of days ago and really find it interesting that it possible to workout intensely for only a brief amount of time and get crazy amazing results. I have been dealing with some knee issues, but since that has subsided I’m ready to get back to working out. I will have to modify the workouts to suit me as an overweight person at first, and work up to more reps, but I’m so ready and even bought the Gymboss timer to help me, using my cell phone alarm clock has been a nuisance from the beginning.

Thanks Zuzana and husband (sorry IDK your name)

  • Avish

you could have some whey protein with milk if you have any available. it is really good fuel for your muscles after a workout. it doesnt matter much what you eat but remember to keep the portions small. a light healthy idea could be some some frozen veggies with some pasta sauce. or a small bowl of 100% rolled oats. (not the best tasting but if mixed with protein it does taste better!)

    celery lol

  • Cathrine

Hey Zuzana, i m Gozitan and the cheese you used can be used pretty much for everything – toast, bruschetta, chicken stuffing, with sandwiches, bread sticks and crackers etc. you can also shallow fry it – it s yummmmy. Try the FRESH goat’s cheese, it not dried and with no pepper. You can add it to the minesterone – just add it for the last 5 mins otherwise it becomes too chewy. Anther way of cooking the FRESH goat’s cheese is to add it in vegetable stew. You can fry the onion and garlic, add carrots, peas, potatoes, tomatoe paste, 400ml water, and a lot of cauliflower, let it cook for an hr (slow heat), then 15mins before you turn it off, put and egg (not beaten) and the fresh cheese.

    Zuzana,

PLEASE get a chef’s knife! You will be so happy you did. I love mine. I also learned the proper way to hold one and it makes a big difference in the level of control you feel. Just google it or search how to hold a chef’s knife.

    Thanks for the clean recipes.

  • Karen

Thanks for posting real food recipes. I hate it when fitness instructors give advice for recipes and it involves things like low-fat Cool Whip and Instant Pudding. (barf)

    Zuzana-chan,
There has been readers recommendation for Chef knife. Might I suggest you invest in “Santoku” style knife for your cutting and chopping? They provide good control over the task on the cutting board. Beyond rinsing before preparation you should not need water for your vegetables or cutting tool. Use the correct tool for your task, properly sharpen and you eliminate risk of cutting your fingers. Get a good quality knife – don’t go cheap. I use a Zwilling 180mm.

  • Tarrah

    Hey Zuzana,
Just made this recipe tonight and it came out great!
I didn’t have raisins on hand, but I just bought some dried cherries so decided to sub them for the raisins. They were delicious in this recipe! if you can get your hands on some dried cherries, definitely try them the next time you make the farmer’s chicken :)

Love your workouts, you guys are amazing! :)

  • alina

Im so curios to know: how can you eat every 2 or 3 hours if you also have to do workout. As far as i know if you do exercise you have to wait at least 2 hour after you eat and 2 hours after you do the exercises. I want to know this because is sow important. Sorry for my english.

  • jo

    Hey Zuzanna!

If you put your onions in the fridge (store them in the fridge) they dont make you cry anymore when you cut them. I learnt that tip agess ago and I cook a lot for me and my boyfriend.

    :)

  • Andrea

I tried this recipe tonight for dinner and OMG! I love it! My new found favourite! Thanks for posting this recipe. I am always searching for new healthy recipes to try out. I love the texture of crunchy nuts paired with the soft bread. And you are right, a little goes a long way. I only need a small portion to keep me satisifed and energized! I hope you will consider posting more recipes soon! Yum!

    Andrea (from Canada)

p.s. I’ve been following some of your workouts for about 2 months now and I’m definitely loving my results! Thanks for everything!

Hello there, I stubbled across your fitness videos on you tube. They look very intense and therefore will be starting to try them on monday for a new week. My question to you is, are there any other healthy breakfast that I am missing out there. I get burned out on cereal right away and so I make just potatos and 2 scrambled eggs and maybe two slices of turkey bacon. This is my primary and first pick between the 2 breakfast typs. when i do get in the mood to eat cereal, I will eat plain or fuel wheaties, special K and plain or honey nut cheerios. And when I do eat cereal for example, today I had wheaties fuel with servings of 2 hand fulls with easy milk 2%. Is that enough to start my day out or should i require more? Thanks -Chris

If you want to find the best anti aging cream, strip years away from your age and banish wrinkles, age spots and sagging skin for good: you need to do your research! Find proven natural skin care products that do what they say and you will discover, like I did, that staying young and beautiful is not as difficult as some would have you believe!

I came upon your website today. I am very overweight and I like the advice, workouts, and recipes you have on your site. Your not preachy, you don’t blame fat people for the world’s problems and I got motivated to change. Workouts will kill me now but I know enough to start with walking and work up to your workouts. Thank you for being on the web.

I love all your recipes. A while back maybe a year or more you posted what you normally eat in a day. You went through all of your meals and showed us the portions for each. You had some interesting food in there like bulgar. I was wondering if you could send me the old video to see it again! Thanks soo much!

  • KNathan

Wow, this has everything I love in it aside from the raisins. I wonder how it would be as leftovers since my boyfriend is a very picky eater, so I’m guessing it would last me a week or two if frozen. I’m going to work on my portions now. Thanks!

výborný recept.moc mi chutná.Bylo pro mě těžké vzít si jen trochu:) ale zvládla jsem to a odolala jsem pokušení:)

  • Nick

Just stumbled upon your site and as a personal trainer Im incredibly impressed. Especially with this recipe. Just made a little different version as I did not have all the ingredients. Loveddd it. Try this recipe with peanut butter instead of nuts and saute the veggies in the melted peanut butter and it gives it an extra kick of explosion in your mouth.

  • Vasil

Hi guys, I am making this lovely dish right now. Changed a bit the recipe because I didn’t have some of the ingredients available and both me and my wife were very hungry. Judging by the stunning smell that’s coming from the pot…I’d say it is going to be really nice. Can’t wait for it to cook. Thanks again guys.

    Vasil

  • Merry

I also cry a lot when I cut onions. So I cut a whole bunch of them at once and refrigerate it. I would wear a ski gargle and plug my nose with paper towel when I cut onions, which is the only way to do it without suffering.

  • silver

use a bigger knife and you’ll be less likely to cute yourself :) food slips less

  • silver

I’ve favorited this recipe! i can’t wait to try it!!!

I mentioned already, use a bigger knife while cutting, that will prevent food from slipping and you from cutting urself! (look for butcher knife with markings on the side specifically to prevent slipping!)

Certain onions make you cry more than others. believe it or not, larger knife also helps less tears! b/c you are making clean cuts that are faster…slower cuts aren’t as clean, so you get more “juice” coming out making you cry.

another helpful tip with onions…leave the stem on, it will hold onion together more. cut as many ring slices as you can, then put flat surface down and continue cutting around stem.

seriously, tho, watching you cut the pepper and apple with that teeny tiny knife scared the crap outta me!!! oh, with pepper…always skin side down! again, so it doesn’t “jump” when you cut it.

…ur knife handling freaks me out LOL google how to chop food properly! lol most ppl are afraid of big knives, but they actually HELP!! You’re more likely to have a small knife slip

  • adina

    Hi! love your site!

Just wanted to share with you something my grandma told me about cutting onions. You should drink a little bit of cold water and keep it in your mouth while cutting the onions.

I’ve tried it and it really works!

    Keep up the good work!

  • Bexi

I thought this was wonderful, hubby said it was good as a stuffing, and the roomate said if we swapped out the apples for potatoes, he would love it. Tyring some of your other recipes out as well. Thanks for sharing!

  • mag
