A Homebuilt Dip Station

Hi guys,

Enjoy this article from my friend Chris who has been very supportive of our site

and is a regular and helpful contributor in our community comments.

Why Do it Yourself?

By CL Vancil

For some it’s the high cost of sports equipment  that prevents them from purchasing such things. For others, the location they live in hasn’t got a convenient place to purchase fitness equipment or it simply costs to much to ship it to them.

For many of us it the pleasure you get form making something yourself and the satisfaction of learning to use new tools, materials and systems. In this case it’s a simple Dip Station made of Galvanized steel pipe or PVC pipe. The basic design is the same in either case. Galvanized pipe is readily available, but can cost as much as the product you’re trying to mimic and requires some skill in assembling it without putting a lot of unions in the design.

Assembly can be tricky with pieces of pipe because of the nature of threaded parts. While threading together more than two pieces you often are undoing one side while tightening the another! This is where unions allow you to screw together parts, but you need to allow for the length unions add to any piece of pipe. So it might be simpler and better for some to make this out of something lighter and easier to assemble…PVC pipe. I’m sure a 1.25 inch schedule 40 pipe would work as well as the galvanized steel pipe and cost much less. The galvanized pipe assembly shown cost me over $130 USD which is about the cost of the Ultimate Body Press Zuzana and Frederick use.

Here is the parts list for the Dip Station I made:

(all are 3/4 inch galvanized steel pipe)

1-1 1/2 inch Nipple (it’s what plumbers call a short piece of pipe)

1- 2 inch Nipple

1-Coupling

1- 5 inch long piece of pipe

1- 18 inch long piece of pipe

2 -Unions

8- 90 degree elbows

2- “Tee”*

2- 12 inch long pieces of pipe

6- 24 inch long pieces of pipe

2- 36 inch long pieces of pipe

To assemble the steel pipe version you will need an open space, gloves and at least one pipe wrench. Start at the union which is screwed onto the 36 inch length of pipe. It really doesn’t matter which end or which part of the union you use. But, let’s start with the 2 inch nipple and the part of the union with the two pieces. You then connect one of the 90 degree elbow and a 24 inch length of pipe. Then another 90 degree elbow and the 12 inch length of pipe. Next connect to one of the TEEs and another 24 inch piece of pipe. Okay do you get the general idea? The last thing you would assemble would be the cross brace with the other union and the 5 inch long piece of pipe and the 18 inch long piece.

Here is a parts list for a Dip Station made of 1.25 inch PVC pipe:

8- 90 degree elbows

2- “Tee”*

2- 12 inch long pieces of pipe

7- 24 inch long pieces of pipe

2- 36 inch long pieces of pipe And a small bottle of PVC Pipe Cement Some places (i.e., Home Depot) you can buy 24 inch pieces of PVC pipe already cut to length.

But, you do need two 12 and two 36. Or I guess you could go with cutting a 24 long pipe in half and with two couplings glue up two 36. That would change how many 24 inch pieces you need and you might as well cut the other two 12 inch from a 24 as well. This wouldn’t be the cheapest route as a single precut 24 inch piece costs about half as much as a 10 foot lengths of pipe which normally you would cut to the correct lengths yourself. As you can see this is a bit like big people LEGOs or Erector Sets. ;)

And if you make either of these Stations and actually use it for exercise and not the dust collecting piece of art I designed it as, it’s your own fault! :)

  • diana

    That is awesome!!! Thanks!

  • Lydia

….that’s a whole lot of work, nice job though

  • Lvette

    Chris,

I commend your hard work. My husband is so happy we live in an apartment condo…for sure I would have made him go buy PVC pipe to build a dip station. Also, I think that the Ultimate Body Press package for $119 is a great buy and the equipment is not as bulky for people living in small spaces.

Anyways, I dig your inventiveness and I am all for self sufficiency. Again I commend you for using your time and knowledge to build the station and sharing the end result with us.

Kudos to Zuzana and Frederick for bring this to our attention.

  • Thanos

This is AWSOME !!!!!! Very nice work Chris !
My idea is if you don’t have any money at all you can collect these from a scrapyiard or something like that :D

Do It Yourself is way better from my point of view because it has “your” signature on it and it is one of a kind ! :D

  • Brian

Check out these PVC dip bars in this video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZLyJt4IHHY&playnext_from=TL&videos=w49OgDQM8EY&playnext=1

The required pieces are in the comments below the video and the workout looks killer. I think you could make this from 1.5 inch schedule 40 PVC for $25 – $30 dollars.

How about a variation on this workout that is upper body one day and lower body the next for those of us who like to do splits?

Keep up the great videos, they are entertaining.

  • Ashley from Canada!

    Hey Chris L!

This is so facinating. Thank you for inspiring others! Not only would you get a great workout out of this, but also the satisfaction that you have made it yourself. This has just motivated me to get out to do and make soemthing if I don’t have it. :) And Zuzana! I just wanted to say that you are sooooo beautiful inside and out. And Freddy you are great too :) This website is so intelligent, healthy, funny, motivating, and just a god send.
    Sending my admiration!

    Hi Zuzana,

What kind of certification do you have?

  • http://www.fotolog.com/flaviarj FlaviaRJ

I had the same idea here but with the measures it´s much easier to do it! In my case I thought about it because the sites doesn´t ship to Brasil, I go to the squares that has this equipment to exercise, but when rains here it´s difficoult to go. So I thought about building a dip station, and I thought about building a bar station too, because I live in a big houve and I have a lot of space here, so I thought about making a exercise place in my home! ^^
I´m going to do it for sure!!
    =D

    VERY GOOD ARTICLE!! LOVED IT!!
(more and more I think you guys just have the gift to guess what I´m waiting to see here!! very nice!!)
    Congratz! ^^

  • Shayne{Rick]

how much does the guy weigh that uses that?
wow, I’d be scared, and I’m only 218lbs.

Chris ,wow!! I wasn`t expecting that picture it looks really really cool !thank you for taking the time to show us. It looks great maybe my hubby will have a go for me thank you.

wow, this is so amazing to be able to do by yourself. i do not even know what are all the parts he is talking about. :-(
hey, if some one do an extra one can he/she sent it to me:-)

  • christy

wow, this is great. thanks, chris. luckily enough i worked at a building site in the australian outback and learned how to assemble pieces like that from a plumber :D. but i would have never thought of DIY.

  • Isabella

Love this article, thank you Cris…
I am actually moving into my new house & I have a big yard where I would like to build some outdoor equipment (I have a lot of wood so it would be great to use it somehow)…if you have any more homebuilt equipment ideas please let me know :D
    Thanks!!!

  • Eimear

    Thanks Zuzana and Frederick,
Cool i was just thinking about that during the week my dad was metalfabricator b4 so i was going to ask if he would make one for me but i didnt know where to start so this is perfect i can now show wat i mean by a dip station instead of saying a metal bar thing wit bendy bits like monkey bars but not really you see this is a whole lot easier once again thanks.

    very cool!
I am one of those people who has two left hand when it comes to building, so yeah, I buy my stuff :-)
    Power to those who can.

  • Rv

    Nice object!

As for me, I use a roman chair like: Weider PT 800. I made push-up rings with dumbells and straps.

I think Ultimatebodypress have good products. I certainly buy it if I don’t have the Weider.

  • Kirsty

Love the homemade dip station. Have been thinking that I would really like one but for me the price is just too prohibitive!! My partner is an engineer and could make one of these really easily. Thanks for the great idea Chris and thanks to Zuzanna for sharing it.

  • kevin petersen

    Hi Guys

Can I just add my comment to this great idea, I worked on a UK celebrity fitness competition and we used galvanized scaffolding with clamps that tighten with alun screws. Its larger diameter tubing is a bit heavier but is capable of holding people of heavier weights, also by making one of the bottom ‘feet’ shorter the bars angle in allowing for different shoulder widths to us it. We found this useful as dame Kelly Holmes and Sir Steve Redgrave are both so different in body size.

    Hope this is useful too.

  • Mac McDaniel

I love your work outs and you web site. Thqnk you for what you do. as for the home made dipping station, I just use two folding chairs with the backs facing each other. they ate about $10.00 apeice at Walmart and they are real easy to store.

  • Tanya

    REAL COOL! Bravo!
Will you add any coating to your self-made piece of equipment? How solid the construction really is? What’s your idea of the weight limit for 3/4 inch pipes?

  • Everett

Very cool! Thanks for posting this!

  • Chris

    THANKS you are great!!!!!

  • stellarsoulartist

I would be interested in seeing a picture of the PVC pipe dipbar…I am not as handy as Chris as to make my own but I know some people who might, like my dad…

I bought the one Zuzana and Frederick have and it is very good quality- but I do wonder if a very big heavy man would find it to be strong and wide enough…that is when building your own might come in handy as well.

A little celebratory side note! I used to think I could never do pullups and that I just wasn’t strong enough- but I don’t think that anymore! I am getting stronger- still not quite able to pull myself all the way up- but in the three days I have had my pull up bar, I have made measurable improvement on my pull ups!

  • RaeNYC

Hey Chris… Nice article, too bad it costs just the same, lol. I considered having my husband weld one together, didn’t think of using pvc pipes.

  • Nicole D. Lopez

How nice :) I’d like to build my own.

So, today is the very last day of my 30 day challenge :)
I still haven’t decided on what to reward myself with, but my mom and I are going shopping tomorrow so hopefully I’ll find something. I think I want a shirt.

Anyway, I’m off to workout now :)

  • Frederick

Zuzana has her PT certification from ISSA :)

    Hi Brian,

This is great and I think far superior to my design if made in PVC, I haven’t made the PVC version and suspect if I did it would need more structure than the 3/4 steel pipe did. The unsupported “front” would spread and possible break the 90 dergee elbows at the bottom. His design allows for lots of other uses and are really saw horses. Which a pesron could just go out and buy a couple and use them.

    –Chris

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/41740772@N06/?saved=1 Chris L

    Hi Shayne{Rick],

You’re right to be concerned. I weight about one fourth less than you and I would think you would up the size of steel pipe or go to 1 1/2 inch schedule 80 pipe in the PVC when I’ve finalized the design for it.

DIY is for folks who would take any design and modify it to actually work for them.

Don’t make anything I suggest without thinking how it would work with your body weight or size.

    I’m 5′ 6.5″ and weight about 160#.

    Hi Rv,

I agree the Ultimate Dip Station looks like a great product. I alreay have several ways to do dips so probably wouldn’t buy one right now.

    –Chris

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/41740772@N06/?saved=1 Chris L

    Hi Tanya,

All good questions. I will add some PVC pipe over the 3/4 inch pipe or add some adapters and make the top bars bigger. Right now I have been using gloves and towels.

You do need to tighten the pipe and use loctite or superglue to keep things tight. If you don’t think it will hold your weight then use larger pipe diameters or add structure.

    –Chris

  • http://n/a Tanya

That guy is incredible – does he ever get just a tiny bit tired???

  • http://n/a Tanya

I was asking about the final touch because as far as I know galvanized pipes will make your hands black. Also did you ‘trim’ the pipes or were they clean of any burrs?
I hope that 3/4 inch pipes will hold my 120 lbs! :-)

    Hi Everybody,

Brain’s youtube video find made me curious to explore youtube also to see if anyone had a good solid design using PVC. Here are two similar designs both made of 2 inch pipe.

  • Michael

Great information, a nice variation of this would be instead of using the three 24in bars on the front and back for parallel bars would be to make either one or both slightly shorter or longer, this would create two bars that angled away (or towards) each other. This would allow for varying widths while dipping and emphasizing either the chest or triceps more.

  • Pikmin

You got it CL, that’s some BodyRock spirit!!! Girls, stop saying that you’ll ask your hub/daddy to do it for you, all you need is a wrench to connect the pieces, isn’t it? I’m sure everyone in the WORLD has some popular Swedish furniture mounting skills :)
Thanks as well to Brian for posting the PVC Workout, it was impressing.
    Cheers

good idea man,i suggest for a quick dismount to replace the coupling with a union and do the same thing the other side, and for heavy people a reinforcement bar at the center on the lower part 2 tee at 45 degree 2, 45 degree and a union will do the trick!!!ty,i will do mine

I can answer this one! You loss body fat and reveal muscle by eating just the right amount of food (small portions) and working out to gain muscle mass.

    Hi Gordon,

Their the folks that inspired me to make a chin up bar. I didn’t use pipe, but my design functions the same.

BTW, I finished my PVC design and it’s parts list has change to include some more pipe and and elbows, etc…

It’s here if you’re interested in seeing it.

Lovely :) it’s too bad that you cut your head of on the picture :)

    Hi Zuzana,

Maybe I don’t have a head? 8-) Thanks for the opportunity to do the article.

I hope folks who don’t have a Dip Station and want one get some ideas from the DIY attitude. Some of those who commented express it better than I did in the article.

You find something that works whether it’s building it or buying it and it doesn’t have to look anything like the Dip Station you use or the one I made.

    Take care,
    –Chris

  • Patrick

Very nice dip station setup! I would have build one if I didn’t have a pullup bar. Fortunately, I installed a pullup bar in the basement and bought gymnastic rings that I can connect to the pullup bar.

I can adjust the height of the rings with the chains for different exercises. If you want less movement from the chains, run the chains through metal pipes. Instead of the pullup bar, you might be able to use open stairs to your basement.

Although I am a big fan of the dip station, doing the exercises that Zuzana is showing in the video with the gymnastic rings, gives me a bigger challenge. You can compare this with pulling or pushing weight with a barbell versus dumbbells with the same total weight.

Chris, you create a nice piece of workout equipment! With creativity we can build exercise equipment cheap and take care of our health.

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/41740772@N06/?saved=1 Chris L

    Hi Tanya,

I’ve never had this problem with the zink on galvanized pipe, but can see some might. You could paint it or use black pipe> I weight ~160# right now and have no problem using the Dip Station. This is DIY so add any struture you feel will improve the design or make it out of 1 inch pipe. If you look at the PVC version I have at http://www.flickr.com/photos/41740772@N06/?saved=1 you will see a cross brace on the bottom which you could add. This would require some of the pipe in the parts list be changed to shorter pieces and two more TEEs be added.

    hi guys,
i have a question about your pull up bar – does it mark your walls at all? i live rented and cannot afford to have it scuff the walls!
also, what exercise mat do u use?
and if i am going to get kettlebells, should i go for just one (say 8kg) or a couple of them?
    thanks!

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/41740772@N06/?saved=1 Chris L

    Hi janine,

I have used the same kind of pull up bar before as they have and it doesn’t mark the trim or wall, but you can always just place a wash cloth or a piece of fabric between it and the doorway on both sides.

I’m not sure what brand of mat she uses.

This is a great design. I was all set to make it when I saw this idea on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuow4EJ0Ir0&feature=related

He uses a folding walker he got for $5. Thinking outside the box at its best and saves plenty of money!

  • Teresa

There are direction for the steal pipe, but there are no instructions for the pvc pipe version.

  • Joe

I use a walker for dips. It’s amazingly sturdy, and folds up easily for storage. I had it since I my legs were injured, so you might not want to go through what I had to to get one.

hi zuzana i am at a very poor fitness level and trying to get fit and slim up. what are some tips that you have for me to slim up my thighs and also what are some equipment that i can but to workout at home with.

So my dad made me a dip station for Christmas and because I go to school at the University of Michigan he made me a blue and yellow dip station. The material he used is PVC. Real simple but he still needs to add a support bar like the one above in the picture! Either way I can’t wait to work out today!

  • http://pinterest.com/squeezetheday/ Jessy

They don’t ship this dip station here, so I’m gonna have someone make it

has it and would be willing to share the dimensions, it’d be lovely!
