How a healthy lifestyle can help your relationship

Lifestyle choices have a massive impact on how happy you are in a relationship — and let’s be honest, we all have bad days, but if your bad days are starting to outnumber your good days then it may be time to do something about it.

Here at BodyRock we often speak about eating healthy foods and enjoying regular exercise but it all comes hand in hand with how good we feel about ourselves which in turn affects how happy we are.

Get regular exercise

Simple as that. Buy some comfortable workout clothes, start following some videos, and make an effort to get your body moving more. The more active you get, the better you will look and the better you will feel — and if you want an excuse to get intimate with your partner then this one is ideal!

Eat healthily

I know, I know, it’s an obvious one to point out but a constant thrashing of fatty and salty foods can actually make you depressed. Research shows that obese people are 25% more likely to suffer from depression and eating foods that stave off depression and make you feel good are ideal. We often take out our anger on those closest to us, but some of this can be avoided with a little healthy eating — so next time you feel like whacking your partner over the head with a carrot; eat it instead!

Zzzzzzz’s – Get some sleep!

And no I don’t mean go to bed after a fight to sleep it off — I mean get some sleep! Studies show that sleep deprivation causes couples to argue more than any other factor, as people who struggle to sleep are often worried about problems, which, combined with a lack of sleep, can quickly get blown well out of proportion. We all get moody when we are tired but the better you eat and the more you exercise, the easier you will find it to get a good night’s sleep…

Fact: Your partner is often at the brunt of your bad moods

Fiction: You can’t do anything about your bad moods

It’s all entwined — if you exercise well, eat healthily and live an active lifestyle then you will be all-around far happier and far more confident in your relationship. Try it and see!

Best,

Frederick

Great text and great picture! thank you Frederick!

  • Erik

I’m very very with you in this post :). start doing some workouts make you feel “tired”, in the night and that cause you sleep easier, and with this, you are in good mood, no matter if your partner is not… you can always change his/her mood instead of explode and attack ;).
    good post Fred.
    see ya guys

I totally agree with all that you’ve said Frederick and Zuzana. I get extremely grumpy when I haven’t exercised or if I’ve eaten to much crap over too many days!

Sadly my partner is quite happy to sit at the computer for hours at a time, he will go to the gym about twice a week (if that) and eats terribly unhealthy food. It makes it very difficult for me to be as healthy as I’d like. The meals I prepare for my self are foods that he turns his nose up at! He is starting to get a massive belly and doesn’t seem to care!

Then there is a childhood friend of mine who is terribly obese. She complains that she has no energy, is always depressed, hates being married etc etc. Yet she NEVER exercises, eats crap all the time and has recently been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Surely that would be enough to change a few things in your life? But, no, she continues to moan about everything.

Sadly I don’t know what I can do to help her, I’ve provided so much support for her and given suggestions which she blankly ignores every time. How do you help someone like that?

Aussie Aussie Aussie, time for a coffee (no sugar thank you)

  • Ivette

    Hi Zuzana & Freddy -
I’ve using your videos for inspiration for the past 4 weeks or so and I just want to thank you so very much for doing this. Your workouts are brilliant! I decided to post today because I was browsing your site and my 4 year-old son looked and said “I love that girl” – I thought that was so funny!! Now my little ladies’ man wants to watch all your videos. You know what, I love that girl too!
Thank and hugs from Ivette in New Jersey.

  • David

Well said Frederick. I have found my moods getting worse lately since I have been slacking off on my workouts. Time to get it going again!!

  • E.E.

haha really silly question…but do you guys fight? :P you both seem like the type that would have very good communication skills, and that’s a complement. But yes, all these things are quite important in life! Also, if I eat really really unhealthy foods full of life-killing-molecules..? then I feel very burnt out and bloated, and almost groggy the next day. Thank you for these reminders! because for me, exercising is no problem and I really enjoy it, but eating well is alot more difficult. Always praying that you and Zuzi have a blessed relationship and life that’s abundant with God’s love and grace…

  • Brittany

Great advice! I bet you both are living a great life by following this. :D All the best to you guys.

  • Danielle

What a fantastic and simple, efficient way to put it Freddy!!! All those things combined do make for a happier you! We appreciate all the hard work and effort you put into this site. Thankyou so much for the tips!

  • Nicole D Lopez

    Adorable picture.
    Great article.
    Thank you.

  • Robyn

I love this picture…..definitely one for your personal photo album.

Very practical and true advice! :)
Excercise, a healthy diet and good contribute so much to our daily lives.

Hear, Hear! Always good to hear common sense truths. Thanks guys!

  • Tamin

So true so true… I found now that I have been eating better, and exercising I feel much better but if I don’t get enough sleep OH MY GOSH!! I’m a grump! But its controllable and fixable thank goodness.
    Cheers Tamin

P.s I love your website I watch and try most of your workouts I do have to modify some but I’ll catch up soon. I also find all your articles informative and I agree with most of your views i.e corporations killing us with kindness(low priced crappy food) and fast food chains trying to pass off their food as ‘better now we’ve changed the recipe’ :P
Take care and keep up the great work.

  • Shawnie

This is a timely article…thank you for the reminder! I have been eating clean now for about 2 weeks and moving my body more now. I think my relationships are improving b/c the relationship I have with myself has improved dramaticly since I decided to become responsible for my own happiness.

I can attest to the truth in what Frederick said in the “Eating Healthily” paragraph…I used to be very depressed…I made a very dramatic change in my diet and now I feel in control. I may not be able to control the swirling chaos that is going on in my family right now…but I CAN control what I put into my body! I CAN control how I choose to use the first part of my day and dedicate it to GOD and excersize! I feel like I am on some sort of “Spiritual Prozac” or something! My joy and peace seem somewhat Supernatural! I am in a zone!
    Blessings,
    Shawnie

  • mag

great frederick! it’s true everything i think :)
hey guys, are you still working out like active day, and the rest day , active day, rest day………….¿ or are you working out everyday?
and what time is your last meal of the day? and the last meal it about proteins? or something more light like vegetables or some oats?? or doesn’t matter at all?
thank youuu! sorry for my poor english :)

  • Tiffany Stephens (day 46/45)

Checking in late after midnight, should be day46 is actually day 45. Had school today, healthy eating w/Coffee, Coffee, Coffee. Had time for a Hot Quickie today..how’s that for lovelife :0) kidding Hot Quickie Workout dirty birdies!! 11 rounds…night

  • Audra

It’s true! I don’t have sex with the lights off anymore, Zuzana! LOL

  • Nadja W.

I think it also works the other way around. If you’re living in a healthy relationship with a supportive partner, you can help each other lead a healthy lifestyle – but if your relationship is rather destructive (for example, if your partner keeps buying and eating unhealthy things or is always having wine with his dinner while you’re trying to avoid alcohol) it can make your life so much harder.

  • Aaron Hanes

Good advice, I’ll start following it, thanks!!!

  • Tami

    Hi Frederick and Zuzana,

I just wondered if you could help with a little issue. I’ve had sciatica for a few months now and with physio, I’m getting much better. My thing is this, I built up alot of fitness last year using this site, and haven’t been able to work out as intensely and feel that I’m losing all my fitness from before. I have been advised not to do any jumping, jogging, skipping, that kind if thing and am finding it difficult to get a good combined strength and cardio workout like you recommend here. I’d really appreciate if you could create a workout that didn’t involve jumping movements but packed a punch in the cardio department.Anything that involves having to use my lower back is a bonus as this is where the problem is and using my lower back more should be helpful to me. I miss that heart racing feeling with the drippy sweat pouring off my back that I get from you other workouts. Please help if you can.

    Thanks,

    Tam : )

  • FluidFreedom

Great article! I have really been enjoying your workouts and all the things you have to offer here at BodyRock.tv. I have been working out every day and eating clean and I can definitely see a difference in my moods. I feel amazing!

Thank you so much for such a great site. I have been telling everyone I know about it.

  • Verena

    Yes, it is true…

We should more think about it.

    Hi guys,

Any couple that can exercise together should do so. Best way to stay connected…sweating together is a great bond.

I use to go to the gym with my husband, but due to work my husband had to wake up very early. In the beginning I stayed in bed, which messed up my workouts and sleep for almost a year. Now, I get up with him at 3:45am and we do yoga before he goes to work then I do Zuzana’s routine. At the end of day we’re both ready for bed same time. One person (me) is not keeping the other person up because I slept in.

  • http://www.zirafatkobloguje.blog.cz Karolina

Can not be more true. Since I started exercising regulary my body got better shape and I have much more enegry and I am a lot happier. Healthy eating just come with the exercising, you cannot do any good workout after eating fastfood and fatty food. My boyfriend likes my body more and more and I can tell you that in bed feels like it was never better. After 8 years together we are enjoying ourselves every day.

  • GlowForever

Hey Fred and Zuzana that is So true. Its all connected, mind body and soul, we have to take care of ourselves. I think alot of relationships suffer because people put too many people and things before themselves. They think its selfish to take a little time, to be active, or plan their meals, etc… But then deep down they start to resent their partner or children and they act out. When if they took that time to invest in themselves in the first place, just maybe that could be a little happier.

by the way, in the U.S. Its National Turn Off TV Week from the 19th-25th, we are supposed to go a week without the TV. I don’t watch that much TV as it is, but its been nice to have it off totally for the last couple of days. I would welcome others to try it with me!!

    Peace,
    Shaquana

  • http://bodyrock Hunter

This is so true. The first step in becoming happy starts
    with being healthy!

  • Dakota

Freddy, You got it pretty much said. I also believe in relationships supporting and encouraging each other. It is hard some times when one falls off the wagon the other is there to help. Like when I grab my wine and Swiss chocolate in the evening, she gives me the evil eye. We both exercise in different ways but we both pull for each other. Let’s say it is usually me that is sleeping with the dog when I screw up. I wish you all the best to achieve your healthy lifestyles.

  • Mickela

I have to admit that I am not a nice dolly if I don’t get enough sleep, eat bad food or don’t exercise.
and yes I tend to take it out on people that I love even my poor innocent cat. Then I feel terrible about it.
My mate understands that I need to workout or else I am not any fun to be around. He on the other hand needs alone time it is his way of releasing pressure.
It is so important to have this outlet especially living in a place that is really stressful. Staying away from sugar and also taking caffeine and not using alcohol as a tranquilizer has really changed me.

By the way I am up to 6 slow pull ups and I have been waking up without feeling spider webs in my head the last weeks.

So again Frederick you are so right, you and Zuzana are the strong force behind all this positive change in my life along side my crazy strong will.
    :)

  • Laura

Hi Zuzana and Frederick, Thanks so much for the great article and for the adorable picture of you and Charlie !!

  • renzo

you are so beautiful, looks so sweet with her dog. time goes’, but you look more beautiful

  • Gaby

Thank you for one more great article Frederick, I have seen my relationship with everybody improove since I exercice regularly, I am just a happier person… It really works!!

  • sophia

This is very true. My husband and I used to fight quite a bit and i know it was due to not excercising daily and eating healthy. Since I’ve been on this site for the past month, doing the workouts daily and eating more healthy, we havent been fighting as much. So thank you Zuzana and Frederick for inspiring me :)

  • Cassandra

Exercise not only keeps me healthy and looking great. It helps my mind most of all. Theirs something about the blood flowing when I’m working out with much intensity. It keeps me happy. Being thin and healthy causes favor wherever I go.

  • Charmaine

That is very true. I didn’t realise it at the time, but when I was seriously overweight, I was constantly tired, and constantly annoyed and that usually ended up in me being short with my husband. Because I hated what I saw in the mirror so much I was always unhappy, and to try and cure the unhappiness I was always self-medicating with the so-called “comfort” foods. Chocolate makes you happy, right …? Vicious circle if ever there was one, except I never got any happier, just fatter! I still have some way to go before I reach my ultimate goal, but I already feel so much better. I sleep better, I have more energy despite the fact that I now work out 6 days a week, and as a result I am a happier person and I have a much happier husband :)

  • Antonia

sleep iss so immportant aand ssleep deprivation is at the root of many pyscologicaal disorders. sorry my key board is messed up.

  • Meegs

Fantastic advice Frederick, if only everyone in this world followed these principles, imagine how happy the world would be : )

  • lcaceros

    Zuzana….

first of all…i have to tell you I love your workouts. Your are quite an inspiration. On the other hand…i love your articles..and i definetely agree with you…but one little thing, when you talk about research, you may wanna provide your sources. No that we do not believe what you are saying is not true, i think it would make your point sound more ligitimate.

I very kind suggestion from a true fan. Zuzana you rock. Hopefully i can look like you soon!!! ;)

  • Sandra_Brz

Everything you wrote here is so real! I am a much better person when I just exercise often, because that makes me want to eat the best, healthy food (to keep the nice body. Then if I can manage to sleep well (sometimes a hard thing to do), then all I need is love to be a complete person! Too bad that when I have 2 weeks in a row of exams and projects due in school, I brake the cycle by not exercising much and becomin a stress ball instead.

Anyways, I think that what you wrote is real to anyone out there…

  • Fleur

    It is so true.

You are awsome wise people !

Have a wonderful journey (as for life so)

    :-)

  • mariam

Love this. I kinda follow these types of rules myself.

  • Maja

I just remembered a scene from “Legally blond 1″ where this fitness queen is accused for a murder, and main actress says: “She can’t be a murderer, because she exercises regularly, that kind of people are happy, and happy people don’t kill other people” :)))

  • http://mariemolinski@blogspot.com Marz

    So true…:P

  • Frederick

    Hi Shaquana,
We haven’t had a TV set since we got married. There was one kicking around a few of the places that we have lived, but they were not even connected. Like most kids in North America and elsewhere I spent a ridiculous amount of time in front of “the idiot box” when I was growing up :) Both Zuzana and I absolutely love a good movie – and we do watch them at home on the macbook, but we have liberated hours and hours of “life” by not watching TV. I think a week without TV is a great start!

  • Tha Forkmaster

Go punch a sandbag!! That will get your heartrate up for sure!! It will both work the strenght on your upper body and your cardio at the same time. Its also good for blowing off some steam. Try it!

  • Suzanne

oh thanx so much for reminding me of that! can’t wait to remind my class of that movie.

  • http://www.boyrock.tv annoula

hello frederick.. i wanna ask u something.. . are u working out too. . ???

  • Billy

    Frederick, great article and agree.

I want to make a suggestion for you and Zuzana if I may.

How about doing a video of you 2 doing a couples workout where you 2 sweat it out together like a glutes workout or stomach. I think this would be a very popular addition to your already great video Zuzana and would get couples doing workouts together as well.

Keep up the great videos now your one sexy lady and your one lucky guy Frederick.

    Billy

  • http://bodyblog.tv Lish Weese

Nothing could be more true. I am unhappy when I don’t take care of my one and only body. I am very happy when I do. That simple! I am not happy when I feel bad and I feel bad when I eat poorly and I sabotage my lifestyle in some unhealthy way. I love the fact that you don’t let T.V. have such an influence on you…that’s rare these days. I have one show I truly love and it takes about an hour of my day. When my sweet hubby comes home, though, that’s how he likes to relax. Kind of wished sometimes he liked fitness as I do…but maybe someday :) You took a lovely picture here of Zuzana, so so beautiful and natural looking~ In great health! Lish

  • desiree

Wow no TV, if you guys can do it so can i. That’s a lot of disciple. Could you give me advice on how to jump start weight loss if you have to work at nights

checking in! It’s beautiful here in Atlanta! We’re making sand pies and face paint out of sand :0)

  • Debbie L

So true!!! Even though I already knew all this, I really needed to read it today. Lately, so many people (my mum, my sister, some friends…) have been tellig me thigs like my eating habits are too strict, I’m working out too much or I am too thin…
That’s not true and I’m fed up!! Before that, I’d spend all day long sitting in front of my PC eating junk food and no one ever told me anything.
I’ve been following this workouts for two months now and eating healthy food, avoiding junk food, but I really am eating all kinds of food!

I’ve lost 4 kg (2 of fat and 2 of liquid retention),I have 21 per cent of fat, so it’s a helthy level. But what’s more important is how good I’m feeling! I’m proud, I’m happy, I’m fit, I’m stronger, I’m hot!;P I have energy, I’m in a great mood every day, my boyfriend takes care of his diet and he works out aswell, so we’re both very happy and it’s a really good thing for our relationship!

I try to ignore this people who complain about it, but some days it’s really hard…

Thank you guys, if it wasn’t for you and my boyfriend I’d be either still sitting and eating pies or I’d have gone mad trying to change it with no support.

    Big kissssss!!

    Debbie.

    Hello Shaquana and Frederick,

I have been groving with free TV to watch at any time and almost any where – 3TV in our parents house – strangely now I feel like iI had too much of it.
When I moved in my own place, I had the TV but never turned it on. Now I do not own one, I even cannot find when I would have the time to watch it.
I live and involove with real people into reality and this is much more better than palying at potatoe couch. There are so many things I want to try and do for sure I am not passenger of my life, I lead it to the best :D

    cheers

    Fleur

I clicked on “The Diet Solution” on the right hand column here and it was the best investment I made (besides finding this site, of course). I have learned SO MUCH…especially the Tabata Principle (spelling?).

Thank you for offering these free videos and articles.

    Hi Zuzana and Frederick,

Thanks for this article as well as for all the great workouts and tips one can find on your website!
I’ve been following your pieces of advice since the 1st of January and I must admit I’ve never felt better than today!
I got thinner and feel fantastically well in my body now and this, without necessarily eating less (but eating in another way).

It was definitely a great idea to create this website.

    Have fun and take care!

  • Brianna!

Aww I love this article! It’s so true. My boyfriend of almost three years is also in excellent shape but he’s not as much of a fitness nut as me. I always have to tell my him that if I don’t get my workout in or if we don’t do something active (we live in New Hampshire surrounded by lakes, rivers and lots of mountains so there’s plenty to do) then I’m going to be grumpy. It really throws off my day. Unless of course I’m feeling a little run down or tired then I don’t mind resting but that happens pretty rarely. I know he doesn’t care if I’m in the best shape possible but he knows that it’s important to me and I’m sure he loves that I take great care of my body! Even though he says it’d the same even if I was fat! haha.. not happening!

Thanks again for your site! You’ve changed my life more than you can imagine! Loveee you guys!

i totally agree. when i workout and eat healthfully, even if i am not losing weight, i feel better about myself and everything else around me. i am able to realize the beauty and greatness in everything, especially my partner. what is hard is getting him to workout and eat healthy too. he suffers from occasional bouts of depression. i love him and want him to be happy. i know when he works out he is definitely happier. is there any way for me to help get him to workout regularly and eat healthier?
    thanks!

  • lisa malenfant

i totally agree. active lifestyle eating healthy
definately makes u more happier and less prone to depression
i was always active even as a teen and never was a moody no pms and i feel its all because of my activity

I agree also. I wish I could find an effective way to motivate my husband. I’ve lost 40 lbs so far. He started out with me, but needless to say he gave up a long time ago. I notice his belly is larger than when we first met; I think about 20 more lbs and it will officially be hanging over! Ugh! “For Better or For Worse” though :)

    Thanks for this reminder.
It is so true that it is usually those closest to us who have to deal with our momentary mood swing which could be easily fixed with the things you mentioned.
