Diet Recipe – Tasty Cauliflower Brain

Hi everyone,

We shot this video yesterday and you might notice that my mouth was still swollen. Magically today I looked completely normal again. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I found out that I miscounted my anti-biotic pills, and I am actually taking the last one tomorrow morning. I am really looking forward to getting back to our workouts :)

Tomorrow is my birthday and I am turning 28 :) I will make sure to eat enough cake to last the whole year :) It will be my last day of rest before I start the new daily workouts again on Friday. We are planning to go to a restaurant for a nice dinner tomorrow evening, but the big party will be on Friday with my siblings and friends just outside of Prague. I am going to bring a camera so that we can share some of the celebration with you guys.

I hope that you are going to enjoy this recipe. It is a very healthy and tasty vegetarian dish. Even if you are not a huge fan of cauliflower, I hope that you will give this recipe a shot. Freddy would never voluntarily eat cauliflower, but even he liked it. Here is a tip for those of you who are still doubters – you can grate a little bit of cheese into the mixture to make it even more tasty.

So the name of this recipe is Cauliflower Brain, translated from Czech ”Kvetakovy Mozecek.” It is an old Czech recipe perfect for a light dinner or a side dish. I also made mashed potatoes to go with it because I wanted to follow my dentist advice and eat soft foods. By the way the pickles were amazing with it although it took me some time to chew them :)

Cauliflower Brain Recipe:


You will need a cauliflower, 2 or 3 onions, 3 eggs, salt, water, olive oil, and potatoes.

Heat about 3 table spoons of olive oil in a big pod and add chopped onions. Stir the onions until they start to change color.

Chop the cauliflower in pieces and mix it with the onions in the pot. Add about 2 big glasses of water and cover the pot with a lid. Cook the cauliflower until it’s soft. Oh, and don’t forget salt ;)

It will take about 20 to 25 minutes to cook the cauliflower. When the cauliflower is soft, take a fork and make a mush of it. Crack 3 eggs and mix them in. Keep stirring and cook the mixture for another 3 to 4 minutes on a medium heat.

This is Freddy’s portion.

This is my portion. One scoop of Cauliflower Brain and one scoop of mashed potatoes.

    Did you know making cauliflower as if it were mashed potatoes tastes just like mashed potatoes? Boil cauliflower,drain, then mash adding boiled eggs,salt and pepper to taste,with a little bit of milk (just like making mashed potatoes) and voila!, looks,tastes just like mashed potatoes.

    I am a rather young person who participates in cross country, swimming, and track. Personally, I do some of your workouts after a relatively easy practice and I can not fathom how you live off of that small amount of food. Do you snack healthily, because when i personally try to watch really closely what I eat I end up binging a day or to after. Although the food i binge on is not at all unhealthy I still feel rather bad about it. What are your suggestions?

    I definitely have become more aware of portion sizes since I began following your website. Last night at a restaurant, celebrating my very good friend’s 20+10 birthday, I was very appreciative of the chef’s portion control. A little bit of fish, a little bit of cous cous, and a little bit of veggies. Very unusual for an american restaurant, but I was happy! But I was impressed that I noticed at all!

    Pickled cucumbers, huh? How do they fit in your healthy eating plan? I thought that this is the kind of food we should avoid.
    I like cauliflower too along with broccoli only I keep both slightly undercooked as I do with all veggies.
    I also heard tha potatoes are the best for us if baked unpeeled.

    thanks for the recipe.
    Your portion is really crazy small, that is impossible to fill your stomach :-/.
    To be honest, thats one of my biggest problems. Eat small portions and not look every hour for something to eat. As I am an emotional eater, I became addicted to calm myself down with food. But I more and more try to become aware of that and do something different.
    Anyway, hope you feel soon better, have a great, unforgetable birthday party:-),

    I like your meal very much, because I do a lot of that kind of stuff as well. Can I give you some advise… isn’t more healthy to do your vegetables on steam? That’s the way I did my vegetables. For example, you can put Cauliflower Brain on steam first, and then only when you need to mixed with the eggs to use a pot. Anyway, it’s always a matter of taste.

    I also do your workouts from 1 mouth, before that I was running constantly and do some other exercises but your tips helps me to improve my skills. Thanks for that so much :)

    here is another good and very simple recipe for a cauliflower – cream soup:
    cook the cauliflower with 1-2 garlic cloves, salt, pepper
    pour away most of the cooking water in a cup
    mix with a mixer
    add milk
    if necessary add some of the water from cooking

    in 10 Minutes you have a great creamy soup :) hope you like it.
    by the way, I have the same plates :))

    Well I have one tip for nem web so far: I was looking for one workout in daily workouts section and I knew its somewhere in the middle. In this time I missed view of pages 1,2,3,4,… where I could skip the beginning for example and go directly on page 4.

    Im not sure if you understand what I mean :-). Its just detail.

And I already love mashed potatoes so I’ll definitely be giving this a try. I want to share a recipe with you, freddy and everyone else that I just discovered and it was amazing and very healthy. You probably can’t eat it right now but maybe you can try it when you feel better. It is really healthy French Toast. The egg mix for the toast to dip in consists of 1 mashed banana, 2 eggwhites, a dash of cinnamon and a dash of salt. I used whole wheat bread. It was amazing, I didn’t even feel like using syrup. I just drizzled a little bit of honey. Have a good one guys.

    some times i can handle small portions but occassionally, i honest, get very hungry and unsatisfied. do you have days like this? if so, do you just eat perhaps slightly larger portions or do you snack on more fruit?? i just want to head to the chocolate tin but i resisted and eat a lot of blueberries instead but i’m still not satisfied! :-( just oen fo those days where i wont’ feel happy unless i stuff mysefl full of carbs or sugar!!

    WHAT NOSTALGIA! I’m African American, we have a version of this dish and another dish you used perviously in my upbrining. I don’t think it was smashed so, but non the less tasty. I roasted my brain and onion with olive oil for 25 min in the oven, smashed it and added the egg on the stovetop. I had it for dinner and breakfast. I’m not a big meat eater so this was perfect!! Oh music, check out Fergie’s album “Dutchess”, Kesha’s album “animal” a lot to enjoy on your ipod (just happen to have the same ipod :). Seeing reduction in my tummy..thanks for more tummy time.     I just wanted to let you know that I have started following your workouts 6 weeks ago and I still do them every day. Before that I did not do any sports whatsoever. So in the beginning some of your exercises were far to intensive for me, but now I really start to see improvement and I can do most of the routines properly (though they are still very hard)! You are a great inspiration and whenever I feel like giving up, I watch your video’s and I can’t wait to work-out again! I also love your recipes.
    Normally, I don’t really comment much on sites and video’s. But today I really wanted to just thank you for sharing with us and, of course, I want to wish you a very happy birthday!!!

    First..I love your dogs, so much:)
    I make a similar recipe but it is called mashed cauliflower (like mashed potatoes) where I steam the pieces in low sodium chicken broth, mash them with some parmesan, salt & pepper. You can doctor them up the same ways you would mashed potatoes. It’s the same concept as your “brain” without the eggs. I am thrilled to make this a meal by adding the protein and nutrients of the eggs plus the cheese, of course! Thanks and Happy Day to you!!

    I usually steam cauliflower, add besciamella sauce (butter + flower + milk + salt mixed) on top, cover with bread crumbs and grill in the oven. Kind of more caloric, sorry, so half of Zuzana’s portion would do with this one :)

    I have a question about your diet….. everything I read pushes so much protein when trying to build lean muscle however, you seem to post a lot of vegetarian type recipes. I was wondering how often you eat meat. It seems to me that you build muscle JUST FINE without consuming to much protein.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY ZUZANA!!! I’m trying to make sure that I eat many small meals over the course of the day, however, it’s a different story at night. Fortunately, I’ve actually done really well at only eating half of my plate at night so that I don’t over do it, but sometimes it’s not that easy, especially when the food is DELICIOUS!

    I’ve been doing your workouts 3 times a week for 3 weeks in addition to my regular gym visits and I feel great. My only problem is that I’m trying to lose about 20 lbs and haven’t lost anything. I workout regularly so I don’t see what the problem is.

    Any suggestions?

    Happy birthday ( a little late) hope you had a wonderful day, and the rest of the year turns out just the way you want it.
    I was travelling and missed your new workouts, but was able to make up some of my own by combining exercises from your old workouts, I also had no access to the internet so I got creative. I found a skipping rope for 4 euros and went to the park and did mostly cardio with the rope.
    I was really close to Prague (Dresden). the weather was nice and I felt great being able to do my workouts in the fresh air.

    I tried to submit a post yesterday but I wasn’t sure if it made it through. I wanted to give you a tip on how to tell if an egg has gone bad without having to crack it open. You just put the egg in cold water deep enough to submerge it. If it sink, it’s a good egg. If it sinks but stands up on its end, it’s still a good egg to eat, but it is starting to get old. If the egg floats on the surface of the water, it has spoiled. This trick will save you from having to make a mess.

    Interesting recipe, califlower-onion mash Oops. . .Califlower Brain?!?! :) I like mashed potatoes but I prefer sweet potatoes. I clean the potatoes, poke holes into one with a fork, place it in a microwave bag and microwave for 4-5 minutes depending on the size. After this, I eat like an apple, skin and all of course! I will try your Califlower Brain sometime this week, as long as Freddie ate it, I guess I can too.

    I made this recipe on Sunday and it was quite tasty. I add some garlic and a little shaved horseradish to give it some kick. My roommates made fun of me for making what they called a “trough of mashed cauliflower”! Tonight I made teriyaki chicken and mixed it with the cauliflower…very tasty!

    I’ve been really noticing great results, and am fairly good about ignoring the numbers on the scale, and have been happy with the changes in my body, however, I’ve gained a significant amount of weight since beginning this workout program 4 months ago. Though I’ve definitely made an impecible improvement on my diet, which was already extremely healthy, and have for years followed the smaller portions more frequequently rule, and am very concious about eating fresh and real food.
    So, knowing that muscle weighs more than fat, I’ve still got to ask. What gives? I’m more concerned about how I look and feel over how I weigh, but this is more than I have weighed even at my most unhealthy stages of life.
    So… what’s up?

And when I say ‘snack’, I mean an apple, or a banana, or steamed broccoli, or warmed mushrooms, a carrot, etc. Are these still considered meals? Cheating? Over-indulging? Or are they ok?     I love love your website! You seriously inspire me! I was wondering if you have any diet advice for the skinny girl. I noticed that since I’ve been doing your workouts, I have been losing weight which is no good for the skinny girl. :-) I don’t just want to eat anything and everything–I’d like to be healthy and strong.     I love your site, I found it about 2 months ago. Since then I work out almost every day. I am looking forward to the result when I will look like you))).
    My body changed a lot. But i have some issues about food.
    I am used to cooking with cheese cream, sour cream, natural cream. Unfortunately I love them and I was thinking about that’s the reason why I can’t lose my weight how I would want it.
    What you think about those staffs? I am really wanna know your advice.

    I have been watching your videos for a while and the workouts are great and very challenging! Would you be willing to do a “eat like me” video showing the meals you eat for a whole day? My goal is weight loss and I find myself doing the workouts but having a hard time controlling what and how much I eat throughout the day. It would be nice to see the meals you eat in a day to use as an example of portion size and types of food to eat on a daily basis. Thanks for your help and stay strong! c:

    I just made the Cauliflower Brain and I don’t think I added enough salt, but I found a little vinegar gave it some kick. As also a little sweat & sour sauce was good.

    Thanks for the recipe it was fairly easy to make and it really fills you up.

    Hi guys. Well today I tried the cauliflower recepie. I just did a couple of variations if any one wants to try it. It was ver good!

    I followed Zuzana’s recepie just changing the amount of water to cook the cauliflower. I only added 1/4 of a cup of water so there was nothing left after it was cooked. Then all I did was chop tomatoes, a little bit of cilantro and some hot green peppers, since I’m from Mexico I like it spicey :) but it’s really up to you. I I put it all on top with a slice of avocado and it was very yummy.

    Remember guys to be carefull with your portions if you are eating 5 to 6 times a day. I use really small plates so I do not have the temptation of serving me more then I need. Oh, and one more tip adding Zuzana’s tip of cracking eggs. Use your two cups, but when you crack them, do in on a flat surface so you do not get eggs shells in your food. Doing it on the edge of a cup or plate will make it easier to get some egg shells into the food. I learned that tip from a French chef lol!

    I made the cauliflower brain recipe, and my husband and I both really liked it. It tasted even better the next day. The only thing I did differently was add Trinidadian hot sauce for my hubby’s sake (nothing gets spared from the hot sauce). Great recipe! I also added some garlic salt and parsley to the mashed potatoes. Thanks!

    so I found you on youtube first and I am in love with the workouts you have! I have two kids and have about 20 pounds to loose so I hope your workouts kick my butt! but I have a quick question not sure if you read all your comments but I didn’t know another way to get ahold of you..so I have been struggling with eating right i buy diet cook books and everything and i do good till about noon and then after i eat lunch its all down hill from there..do you have any advice on what i can do to fight off the cravings to eat and keep my energy up.

    Well, clearly I’m no expert on food and dieting, but I’ve found it’s easier to overcome cravings if 1) I just don’t buy the sugary fatty things I know I’ll be eating all day long if they’re in the house, 2) I work out early in the day, (it somehow motivates me to not eat bad throughout the rest of the day because it’d be like all that working out was for nothing if you just eat chips and ice cream), and 3) I chew gum whenever I’m getting that “I’m bored; I’m gonna go eat all the sweet stuff in the pantry” feeling because it makes the cravings just kinda disappear for me. I hope this helps you! It sure helps me from snacking all day and eating when I’m just bored.

    arlena thats her house in prague… i live in ireland an the tap water is fine im sure its the same in prague since its not too far away…. but yea i love this site the videos are awesome, this dish seems very dull an tastless tho… is there any kind of sauce or seasoning that can b used over the top?? btw u remind me so much of my old next door neighbour from latvia lol not how u look but the way u talk to the dogs an stuff lol

    I cook a recipe similar to this for my family and it passes for mash potatoes. I use the food processor to get the cauliflower smooth and add unsweetened almond milk for creaminess. Yummy, yummy. I haven’t tried it with onions but will give it a shot next time. Thanks for all the awesome recipes!

    P.S. I showed my parents that video and they have cut down their consumption of meat, from eating it everyday to only 3 times a week and have completely cut out red meat. Myself on the other hand, I have cut out all meat except fish.. i love it too much :( haha. Anyways take care!!!

    Hello. I’ve been watching your videos for about 2 weeks and the exercises are awesome. I’ve been wanting to get some motivation on what exercises I can do since I have zero money. But anyway, I thought I’d try this cauliflower brain recipe. I put a little too much water and olive oil in it, but made up for it. Even though it’s slightly modified, my husband actually liked it. He said it was great as a spread.
    So now, going to try the no butter healthy chicken. Thanks for the recipe!

    i tried this last night
    i didnt use eggs cause i didnt have any
    i just sauteed the onions and then steamed the cauliflower and mashed it
    i had it with quinoa i sauteed the quinoa with green onions , onions and diced tomato
    1 tablespoon of olive oil and some balsamic vinegar
    it was sooo yummmy and light

    Oh man, I bombed this recipe. I think too much water as I wasnt making as much as you. I cut down on the water and still soggy. boo :( Ill try and figure out how to save it … dont want to throw all that out since we have to watch our portions!!
