Last Minute Adventure

Hi guys :)

Today we did something really crazy – we booked last minute air tickets to Rome and now we have only 3 days to pack and organize for our trip. We are both crazy about traveling and exploring new places so this is a dream come true for us. I personally love the pressure and excitement around packing and getting ready for a trip. After all the travel and international moves that Freddy and I have made in the last two years since starting BodyRock.Tv (Kingston to Prague, Prague to Kingston, Kingston to Malta, Malta to Prague, Prague to Kingston) we wanted to experience the freedom of traveling light. The rules are simple for this trip: no heavy suitcases, no giant duffle bags and NO DOGS allowed :) We are sticking to just one carry-on bag each – no exceptions! This is just the kind of amazing adventure that Freddy and I have wanted to go on for sometime and we will be posting updates from our trip and workouts the whole time we are away so check back!

After today’s experience I have some cool tips and advice for you about traveling and packing at the last minute.

How To Choose the Best Backpack?

It’s quite simple. Do it like we did – go to a specialized store like TrailHead and ask the guy who works there to help you :)

He gave us some great tips that are good to remember.

The right size: Your backpack should be big enough to accommodate all of your ”most important”  things, but if your goal is to travel light and be able to take your bag to the plane as a carry on, than you have to watch it’s size because it has to fit in the overhead storage on the plane. If your pack is too large you might get hauled out by the flight attendant and told to check it – which defeats the whole purpose. We want to skip the baggage claim lineups at the airport and get to the sights as fast as possible. Size also means choosing the right backpack for your height. I tried a small and found that this size was too small for me, because the hip belt was on my waist, not on my hips like it should be. I had to go with size M which was perfect for my height (I’m 5’7). Some companies are also making backpacks specifically for women – there are some differences in how the straps rest on your chest.

The right material: Our backpacks are water resistant, but not waterproof. This means that we might have to go back to the store and buy some kind of rain covers for our backpacks – especially because we will be carrying electronics inside. I am not planning on hiking in the rain, but you never know what might happen if you go for a whole day hiking trip out in the wild. Different materials can have a big impact on the weight of your pack so pay attention to the weight of the empty backpack – pick one that doesn’t weigh too much before you load it.

I must admit that the style of the backpack is also important to me so I am very happy with my choice. My backpack is cool looking, light, spacious and very practical.

The right stuff: You will have to go through your things several times to make sure that you are not packing anything that is unnecessary. When you are traveling light, space and weight are at a premium. Every time you pick up something that you think you need for your trip ask yourself – do I really need this? This is how I managed to seriously cut down my packing portion size :)

The most challenging thing for me when we travel is to pack my makeup and toiletries. I solved this problem by buying a completely new set of decorative cosmetics. If you want to see all of the new make up I got, then visit my personal blog: zuzanalight.com

    Hi Guys!

Woo! Rome! My husband and I are heading to Rome at the end of next week!

If you haven’t booked accomodations yet, you should check out hotelElite. They have locations right in the heart of the city and it’s a similar price to staying in a hostel.

    Maybe I’ll see you there!

  • http://rathernotsay Sabrina

Ciao Ragazze!! Zuzanna they wont let you bring those bottles through security they will make u throw them in the garbage even if they are partially full. The best bet is to buy them in Rome when you arrive. That brand of Hair spray you can buy here for sure. I had a friend who travelled here to Italy and she used the dry shampoo so she wouldnt have to wash and straighten her hair everyday and it worked really well for her. I Love that your commiing here!! If u have a chance come to Florence it is a beautiful city! And dont bother going to the beach on the West side of the country, its no where near as nice as the Ocean on the East side. You two are going to have so much fun here! Enjoy the food and the culture!! Buon Viaggio!!

  • Stania

    You guys are awesome!
I would love to pick up and leave for a vacation on a whim!

P.S. Whatever happened to those baby mice that you found?

  • Pikmin

I wish my boyfriend was as unlazy!!!
Anyways my tips for light packing: summer helps as clothes are tiny :) (BTW be ready as it’s gonna be sooooooo HOT these days in south Italy).

I count the days: day 1 I’m gonna wear this, day 2 that, and so on. Any item I’m undecided about I leave it behind, anyone tends to bring much more stuff than needed really. I never go wrong by matching clothes with days and I’m always the one with the lighter pack.

I cut down on cosmetics and I pour them into smaller cans (the ones I get from hotels).
Another option is… you can buy stuff locally if you miss anything, such as sun lotion and the like.

If you visit Rome go here for a quick italian/spanish lunch: Pan Divino, via del Paradiso, 39 (Campo de’ Fiori), owners are a super sweet couple around our age.
For any other tips about Italy feel free to drop me a line :)
    Enjoy!!!

  • Antonia

    Hi Guys!

The only mistake you can make in this is to change your mind! Its so healthy when you are bothered by something and then take action, look at how excited you both are.

This is the type of thinking that keeps you young in life and you do good to “think” young forever.

Dont be too sad about kali and charlie. They need happy parents that take care of themselves This will also give them a chance to “mature” .. lol!

I love the colors of the napsacks- have a great time, looking forward too hear/see about it all!

  • Iris

    Have a nice trip!!!”!!

  • Lilo

    hi,
i’ve been wondering, and maybe some other people too, why cant i see the new updates to bodyrock.tv when i vistit your site like i used to (entering http://www.bodyrock.tv)??? the most recent post is the “omg sexy body workout”.
i just found the new entries through a facebook post.
is there anybody else having this problem or what is wrong with my computer ;)?

so anyway, enjoy your trip to italy, it’s a beautiful country ;)

    -Lilo

  • God

Since you’re going to Italy without much planning, I have some practical advice which might useful to you.
It is extremely hot in Italy during summer. In Rome, the temperature sometimes is as high as 50°C (122°F/323 K)! So, have water with you! If you’re planning sightseeing in Rome, remember to look for special wells which are located everywhere throughout the city centre – you can refill your bottles with clean, cool water at those. You will need a LOT of water!
Also, remember to wear hats or something like that and use suntan lotion with high UV filters whenever you are exposed to sunlight, else Italian heat might even be dangerous for you. Moreover, you might want to avoid going out between eleven and sixteen when the sun reaches its full power.
Last but not least, wear light-coloured or even white clothes during the day, otherwise you’ll be sweating twice as much and you’ll be loosing twice as much water.
Take care and have a good flight! :D

  • Michelle from Ontario

    Hi Zuzanna & Freddy,

Last year, I went on my first backpacking trip with my fiance (we become engaged 1 week ago, on my birthday…I am still getting used to that word “f-i-a-n-c-e!! :)

Anyways, backpacking was “his” thing and up to that point I had only ever camped although I was used to camping in extremely remote locations. We put a lot of preparation into the trip – and had an amazing time – but the hardest part of the planning process was the packing!!!

It is VERY hard to sit there and weight your items, and go back and forth between different items to figure out what you ABSOLUTELY need! But, it’s also kind of fun and there’s definitely a level of freedom around packing literally JUST what you need and being able to carry it all yourself! (Which by the way, I plan on being able to carry more and carry more comfortably this August since working out with you guys ;)

I would like to recommend a Canadian company however for anyone that is interested is purchasing their gear. Mountain Equipment Coop – http://www.mec.ca/ – is great! That’s where I bought all of my gear. They have good customer service and returns are not a problem for them. (They also have awesome rain covers for your pack.)

Although, I do recommend that those buying a pack for the first time visit an outfitting store in order to get advice. Most stores have sand bags to weight down your pack and give you a real sense of what type of pack will work.

If I ever get the opportunity, I would love to be able to backpack through Italy. I’ve been once when I was a teenager (my father is originally from Italy, he emigrated to Canada as a child) but I think the next time around, I want to experience more of the countryside, the culture and the food!

There is so much to explore and enjoy in Rome! I look forward to seeing your pictures of the trip!

    Have a safe one!

    Michelle :)

PS. Sorry for the long post!

  • Nathalie

    This is so exciting !

I wish you the most fantastic trip guys. I’m sure you will have an amazing time in Italy.

Can’t wait to see pictures of you on the beach :)

    Take care

  • mariam

yeay!!! Europe has got a hot weather right now. Enjoy it!!!

  • Iana

Hey guys!!! have a great trip!!!

Zuzana: thank you for posting about your light travel & the cosmetics. I love traveling light – with one carry on bag – as well!!!

Question: are you sure you can bring tweezers with you on the plane? If they are metal, I think you are not allowed to. The same goes for metal nail file, etc.

And as for as toothapstes, etc – I suppose you will have to buy it all in Rome… I have a feeling you cannot bring it all in your carry on…

Good luck – and PLEASE, let me about the tweezers… did they let you keep it?

  • Carlo

    Hi guys!

I cannot believe it! You will be visiting MY COUNTRY!

..and you mentioned GENOA which happens to be the city I live in!

I mean feel free to do what you you like, but please just think about the opportunity to meet a “fan” of your great site.

I am an ex-athlete, I had been practising judo for 12 years! Unfortunately, after a few years of zero or small sport practice, lately I decided to get in great shape again and started to exercise for serious improvements to my fitness level. All of your exercises are great and for some of them I’ve been able to beat your time!

Please just consider the possibility to meet eachother in Genoa for a coffee, to say hello and to wish all the best in person! I think it’d be great.

I also think that it could be an idea for your site. I mean to interact with people who follow your routines whenever you take a holiday abroad….

    Think about it! Ok?

    greetings from Genoa!

    Carlo

  • Iana

Zuzana, please verify about all the liquids & creams and liquids and the spray & hair iron & metal tweezers, etc… I think you CANNOT bring it all on the plane with you in your carry on.

If you want to bring it all with you – you will have to check in your backpack!!!!

  • Neala

Very exciting! Hope you guys have a great trip, and I can’t wait to see the videos of your adventures. I think you guys would love a vacation in Newfoundland if you ever decide to travel around Canada. Beautiful coastlines everywhere and AMAZING hiking! Thanks again for everything you guys put into this website!

    Neala (from Newfoundland :) )

  • rose

hey guys!how exciting for you!!!!so nice to be able to pick up and take off just like that.a spontaneous adventure!!

  • Angel

Good idea!!you’ll love my city ;) don’t forget to taste our pizza and cappuccino!!enjoy your trip!

  • karen

zuzanna…check with airlines…you wont be able to take those liquids on the plane in carryons…they are very strict now and you will have to toss them. your better off purchasing them when you arrive in rome…have a great time.

  • John M

    Have a wonderful time, guys!

  • Angel

I suggest to provide with water, cap and mini-fan….’cause here it’s very hot out!!!

  • Euthie

Wow! You two are so daring to plan this so quickly and up and go, I envy that! Will you have a translator, does one of you speak Italian, or are you just gonna wing it? I love that you’re still planning on working out there and really admire your dedication. Bon voyage, guys, and safe flight!!!

  • http://www.nutrimetics.com.au/tamin Tamin

    OH HOW EXCITING!!
Hope you have an awesome time!
    Live it up!!
Look out Rome here comes bodyrock t.v!

    Take care

  • KS

so you want to take all those fluids on the plane with you as hand luggage? don’t know about canadian security checks, but in europe you can’t take more than 25ml at once with you on a plane.
why don’t you just leave that huge shampoo & conditioner bottles behind and buy smaller amounts in italy? the got shampoo over there, too!

and 2 kindles and 2 macbooks……come on! you can share one computer and leave the kindles behind. you can put those books one the macbook instead of carrying useless luggage. and i don’t think you’ll even want to read on that trip, you’re gonna see one of the most beautiful countries in the world! you’ll be busy exploring the country and enjoy the lovely food, i bet.

you’ll just regret taking that stuff with you in case you get robbed!

  • Marie L.

    Buon giorno

It’s SOoO Amazing what you guys are going to do!!! I just love to do some crazy spontaneous things like that!!

I was in Italia tree months ago, and you guys HAVE to go in park nationale delle cinque terre: it is wicked awesome! It’s in the north of Firenze and Pisa. I sent you few pics in e-mail. But check for hostels, etc before go there, ’cause there’s not a lot of places.

And for the liquids and creams, any bottle that it bigger than 100ml will be taken. So, if you don’t want to lose your hair products, etc. check it out. You can be lucky as well. When I took the plane in Roma (ciampino) to go in Paris, the girls leave me my contacts lenses products (I totally forgot to take care about the size when I bought it in Firenze.. anyway)

I’m so jealouuuss that your husband jump in that crazy adventure with ya! I love mine so much, but he needs stability and plans lol

Anyway!! Have a safe trip and enjoy!! :D

    Ciao

    Marie-El

  • http://www.peacefulbend.com/kT Katie

Oh wow, you guys are going to live my dream vacation! I’m definitely going to live vicariously on your site these next two weeks.

I agree with one of the other comments that you could leave stuff like soap & shampoo behind and just buy some once you’re in Italy. That way you won’t have to worry about making through security or leakage while your in the air.

Have a great time, and I’ll be looking forward to your Italian updates!

  • Hannah

Hi Zuzana and Freddy, that sounds sooooo exciting!!! I’ve always wanted to go to Rome and Italy. That sounds soo much fun! I hope you guys enjoy your visit a lot!! I would love to just get up and go but with school and work, I never get the time. Have fun and I look forward to your workouts in Rome Zuzana. I hope you guys take us with you if you go sightseeing!!

  • Ashley from Canada!

    I want to come too!

  • Laura

    Have a safe trip guys…enjoy Rome !

  • tina

    have a nice trip

  • Foxy

great trip! Last time I did something crazy was when I bought my flight ticket from Seattle to Florida at 2 am and my flight supposed to be at 8 am. So not so much time for packing…imagine.

I strongly recomend you guys to take your Nikon with you. Your little camera is cute but quality of the pictures is not same. I just don’t want you to regret the left behing Nikon later on. Since I have my Nikon (btw the same one – funny) I never travel without it.

I believe you can have one personal and one carry on luggage so the Nikon bag can be your personal one.

Enjoy the trip and stay safe! Good luck :)

  • sarah

my biggest travel tip is to buy your toiletry items at your destination. i like doing this because then you get to try some new foreign products and you save space in your travel bag. (it seems like italian hair and skin products would be amazing!)

can’t wait to see your videos!

have fun and wear your sunscreen!

  • Claudia

Look forward to seeing a workout on the beach!!!

  • Sonia

I’m so happy the site is normal again, I was stuck in the OMG workout. I’ll travel in September I’m going to Tunisia for the first time, hope you guys have fun in Italy, I’m sure it’s beautiful. Maybe some day you want to come visit Portugal…

  • Cricket

Zuzana, IT’S POSSIBLE TO CUT BACK EVEN MORE ROOM AND WEIGHT:
Be brutally selective in your final pack. You won’t regret it. Nine times out of ten, you’ll find that you still brought too much.

    (From experience)
You definitely don’t need the full size shampoo, conditioner, or hairspray. Buy a couple leak proof travel bottles from the drugstore and transfer your shampoo and conditioner. As for the hairspray, if you buy a travel size can of hairspray, it will last you two weeks. It’s not worth having large bottles of anything. Don’t worry, you can always BIT (Buy It There).

Try to find yourselves microfiber travel towels. They roll up to the size of a paper towel roll or even smaller, but soak up many times their weight in water. They dry in an instant and are the essential towel for a backpack trip.

Share one computer and don’t bring the Kindles. Think about it…

Go and take in the sights and sounds and experiences, meet people, visit, meditate, do your workouts and rest on the beach and listen to the waves and dream and talk about the future. There’s no need for either of you to bring the Kindles, right?
You have the opportunity to detach a bit from technology and just take life in.
Rack up some great life memories without your nose in a book. lol

    Have a terrific time!!!

  • Natasha

Wow! You guys are so cool! Have a great time and can’t wait to see your videos from Italy! Bye!!!!

  • Anna Carolina

Do you know about traveling in Europe by train!?
There is a opportunity called “interrail”. The people who did trips like these or are going to do them have great ideas and experience. You got some good advice on the community-site of “interrail” … “where to sleep for cheap prices”, a packing list, and so on

    http://forum.interrail.net/

I wish you a great time in Roma. Don´t be worry if things does not work directly. It´s all spontaneous ;)

PLEASE take care of you!!! (and your baggage)
    Love
    Carolina

  • Faye

    Good point!!
According to AirCanada’s policies, any liquids or gels in containers over 100mL/100g (3.4oz) CANNOT be in the carry-on baggage….

  • Faye

Be careful, guys. Last time, i checked in my backpack, when I picked it up after I arrived, the backpack had been broken, the metal frame as the back support even exposed and stuck out…the lesson i have learned is tucking all the strips, making the entire backpack supper tight without extra things hanging out.

Enjoy your trip and look forward to see the new videos from you guys.

  • MERCY

You should call the airline in advance and ask about those smaller labelless bottles and inquire if the size of your backpacks will be allowed as carryon. Anyway, have a safe trip, have tons of fun, take lots of pictures and consider this trip like a first honeymoon.

  • Anuta

oh my ! It’s so hot there this time of the year. Hope you’ll survive. My parents went there in July last summer and told me that they hadn’t seene much, since they were looking for fountains all the time.:-)

    Hi Zuzana,
I know this has nothing to do with your trip to Italy, but I saw you packing ProActive, so I just wanted to ask if you’re using the whole ProActive line (the whole set of face care) or just one of the products from the line?
This would be very helpful, so I hope you’ll have time to answer. :)
    Have a great trip!

Oooh I am so jealous, I love Italy! Hope you guys have a great time!

Just wanted to recommend a hotel we stayed in about four or five years ago in Rome. It was Hotel Abruzzi and it was directly opposite the Pantheon so had a lovely view. It was a 3 star hotel so was one of the cheapest centre hotels. Not sure whether you were thinking of sightseeing for a day or two there or heading straight for the coast.

WOW! that is awesome for you two. Listen Zuzana I totally love the outfit you are wearing in this video and the pink bra that matches the tank top makes it too cute. I think you should go the trip with no make-up would that be spontaneous? hehehe But seriously you can just take a little for only two weeks no problem. Have a great time.

What great fun! I’m sure you are going to enjoy yourselves, it is a fantastic country and the people are really nice and friendly. My husband and I live in Italy (I am from the U.S.), between Genova and the French boarder. If you come up this way I can give you tips and recommendations. Have a wonderful time! (Its hot here so you don’t need to pack warm clothes, and remember to hold on to your bags in the big cities and touristy areas… or you may end up traveling really light!)

I know this is totally not related to the whole trip thing but I see that you’re going to be packing your mac book.(and Freddy his Mac book Pro). Do you both have a bag for it or are you just going to pack that in like that?
Have a fun trip! Wishing you both the funnest trip!

  • http://fithappyhealthy.com Anita

Ah awesome. Funny, my hubby and I did that last November. We’d wanted to travel around Italy for so long, one afternoon, we just booked the trip and that was it.

I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Are you only going to Rome?

I don’t know if anyone else gave you the heads up on this, but if you plan to drive in a rental car, make sure to know(or ask your hotel) about any traffic zones that you should be aware of. Italy has this terrible habit of fining cars that enter the zones without paying their permits. If you don’t know about these zones, you get heavy fines and you can’t do anything about them once you’ve left the country. Anyway, link is here if you want to read up: http://bit.ly/bVbuFl

Enjoy your trip. If you go outside of Rome – Venice and Florence are amazing. Also lake Como is awesome.

Oh how exciting!! I hope you have a blast! I used to live in Vicenza. There is a huge hill (monte berico) there which has incredible vistas as well as the perfect running path, it’s a crazy workout. It’s about 45 mins from Venezia which is such a romantic and beautiful place. Also, don’t miss the amaizing northern Italian food, it’s out of this world… I miss it most of all when I think of ole Italia :)

    Have fun!!

Hi Zuzana and Frederick! I looked throughout your website and I could not some answers to a few questions I had…Zuzana, which personal training organization are you certified by? Do you have a personal training business other that you online information? How do you find the time and/or energy to get your workouts completed with a full time job? This is what I struggle with the most. I am too exhausted to get up early because I’m at work at 6 am, only get a 1/2 hour lunch break, and at night I’m spent because I don’t get home til about 8:30 or 9 pm. I absolutely think you workouts are amazing! The variety is marvelous. You always keep me wondering what will come next, even if I don’t have the energy to do the workout. Thanks for all you hard work and effort to create a passion for fitness in others.

Italy was the best trip I ever took. The campsites are amazing and Roma is beautiful! Have a wonderful trip and be careful! :-)

  • Jacques

Go to Positano! Romantic, small and beautiful. You won’t regret it!

  • Jacques

Make sure that they won’t confiscate the spre bottle at the airport!

Have a blast! That’s the best way to travel!

  • Sandra

Don’t bring the makeup. You are naturally beautiful Zuzana and you don’t need the makeup! Just bring sunscreen and chapstick and you will be good to go!

  • Stephanie

In the US you cannot take any liquid materials over 3 ounces. You would have trouble with a few of those items. Are they ok internationally?

  • Carly

    have a safe trip!
also good that you are packing light, it means lots of fabulous clothes shopping opportunities in rome :D
you might need to buy a suitecase there!

  • Jenna

Freddy if you are looking for the best place by the sea, you and Zuzanna need to go to the island of Capri…it is by far one of my most memorable places to visit when I traveled to Italy! You guys will love it! Oh and Sorrento is amazing too!

  • Carrie

John I am glad you said this because I was going to say something. However I believe that it is over 3oz everywhere. You cannot take anything on any plane over 3oz.

Zuzana, just go buy some more of those little bottles and then you can take your hair stuff… (minus hair spray, but you can just buy that there in Italy’s airport maybe).

I LOVE YOUR CROCS! 7 YEARS AGO, I got a pair of them when they FIRST came out, which the company started from where I’m from in Boulder Colorado… and to see you in them is like the COOLEST thing in the world. I am totally jealous of you and Fredrick for being so spontanious. I hope your craziness rubs off on me!

    HAVE FUN YOU TWO!

    Carrie

  • Susanna
