Last Minute Adventure
Hi guys :)
Today we did something really crazy – we booked last minute air tickets to Rome and now we have only 3 days to pack and organize for our trip. We are both crazy about traveling and exploring new places so this is a dream come true for us. I personally love the pressure and excitement around packing and getting ready for a trip. After all the travel and international moves that Freddy and I have made in the last two years since starting BodyRock.Tv (Kingston to Prague, Prague to Kingston, Kingston to Malta, Malta to Prague, Prague to Kingston) we wanted to experience the freedom of traveling light. The rules are simple for this trip: no heavy suitcases, no giant duffle bags and NO DOGS allowed :) We are sticking to just one carry-on bag each – no exceptions! This is just the kind of amazing adventure that Freddy and I have wanted to go on for sometime and we will be posting updates from our trip and workouts the whole time we are away so check back!
After today’s experience I have some cool tips and advice for you about traveling and packing at the last minute.
How To Choose the Best Backpack?
It’s quite simple. Do it like we did – go to a specialized store like TrailHead and ask the guy who works there to help you :)
He gave us some great tips that are good to remember.
The right size: Your backpack should be big enough to accommodate all of your ”most important” things, but if your goal is to travel light and be able to take your bag to the plane as a carry on, than you have to watch it’s size because it has to fit in the overhead storage on the plane. If your pack is too large you might get hauled out by the flight attendant and told to check it – which defeats the whole purpose. We want to skip the baggage claim lineups at the airport and get to the sights as fast as possible. Size also means choosing the right backpack for your height. I tried a small and found that this size was too small for me, because the hip belt was on my waist, not on my hips like it should be. I had to go with size M which was perfect for my height (I’m 5’7). Some companies are also making backpacks specifically for women – there are some differences in how the straps rest on your chest.
The right material: Our backpacks are water resistant, but not waterproof. This means that we might have to go back to the store and buy some kind of rain covers for our backpacks – especially because we will be carrying electronics inside. I am not planning on hiking in the rain, but you never know what might happen if you go for a whole day hiking trip out in the wild. Different materials can have a big impact on the weight of your pack so pay attention to the weight of the empty backpack – pick one that doesn’t weigh too much before you load it.
I must admit that the style of the backpack is also important to me so I am very happy with my choice. My backpack is cool looking, light, spacious and very practical.
The right stuff: You will have to go through your things several times to make sure that you are not packing anything that is unnecessary. When you are traveling light, space and weight are at a premium. Every time you pick up something that you think you need for your trip ask yourself – do I really need this? This is how I managed to seriously cut down my packing portion size :)
The most challenging thing for me when we travel is to pack my makeup and toiletries. I solved this problem by buying a completely new set of decorative cosmetics. If you want to see all of the new make up I got, then visit my personal blog: zuzanalight.com
