Bikini Beach in Sicily

84 Comments 23 July 2010

Hi Guys,

Sorry that we have missed you these past few days – we have been traveling non-stop from Sicily to Rome again and now back to Canada. We didn’t have internet along the way so we were not able to get our latest travel videos up.

We had an amazing time in Sicily – a lot of swimming, eating and eating :) The last part of our Italian adventure was very relaxing, but we did manage to pick up on some tips that we would like to share with you.

Over the course of our trip we stayed in 5 different hotels – ranging from 2 stars all the way up to a 5 star “luxury” hotel. What we learned is that if you are traveling to actually explore the area that you are visiting then a 2 star hotel is all that you really need. We used our hotels as pitt-stops – places to change, shower and sleep between getting out there and experiencing as much of the local culture as possible. A 2 star hotel covered the basics and allowed us more money to spend on the experiences of being in Italy vs. spending money on a room. The other interesting thing was that the vibe and energy in the 2-3 star hotels was actually more interesting. The 5 star hotel was really stuffy and everyone there had their noses up in the air the whole time. From the pool deck at our 5 star hotel we could see down to the pool area of a 3 star hotel just down the hill. The people at the 3 star were laughing and having fun – it looked like a party – the people at our 5 star hotel were lounging around the pool like they were at a funeral. It was all just too “snooty” for our taste. Don’t buy hotel stars – save your money for experiences – especially nice food. We have actually had better experiences renting short term apartments then staying in hotels. You get much more privacy and space and more of the experience of actually living in the area that you are visiting. Apartments tend to be cheaper than hotels, but they do require advance booking so you will have to plan ahead.

Speaking of food – there were a few times that we tried to cut some corners by eating cheap food from fast take out style restaurants – even if it meant a slight savings. What we can tell you is that every single time we were disappointed with the food. We found that in Italy you can eat really great food in tiny little restaurants that are tucked away down little streets and alley ways. These traditional italian restaurants don’t cost an arm and a leg and you get an authentic dinning experience that is always unique. When you are on vacation, and especially when it’s somewhere like Italy where they live and breathe food, you have to treat each meal as a celebration and an opportunity to experience something unique. The worst feeling comes when you are paying the bill for a meal that you felt lukewarm about at best, and when you realize that for just a few dollars more you could have had something incredible.

We have a few more travel videos to share with you guys now that we are back – and we will be starting again with new home workouts and new diet and recipe videos inspired by our trip to Italy so check back for those updates as well.

“Don’t buy hotel stars – save your money for experiences…”

Well said! I agree, but I think this is also true for more than hotel stays. Living simply allows for more time and money to be spent experiencing the globe.

At home this could mean a charming picnic at a beautiful park with friends versus the pricey visit to a local restaurant. Half-way around the world it’s — as you write — “laughing and having fun” versus “lounging around the pool like…at a funeral”. Sometimes spending less (maybe a lot less) leads to a richer experience!

    Thanks for sharing yours!

I agree with hotel tips. That’s we do too when we’re on travel. Save your money for adventure. Hotel is just a place to rest and sleep.
Thanks for showing us your travel. Love it!

I went to Taormina this summer too and I agree that there is so much to do that a five star hotel is not necessary. My bf and I actually stayed at a hostel in Giardini Naxos and it was very clean! We ended up going to the beaches in Naxos too, coincidentally, and liked the localism. Taormina is just very expensive, and I can agree that it is a workout to walk that far (we did too because we missed buses). Would you say that the food in Italy is the best? I’m just curious because you have travelled so much. I was in Italy for a month and exercised but did not lose any weight…because even though the food is healthy ingredients sometimes the courses can be way too much! So now I am back in the states and on a very strict diet. I love your recipes, can you make a video where you show everything you eat in a day? Because I am trying to do that, but its hard. Maybe you could show how you plan out all 6 of your meals. Thank you guys!

    Hi Zuzana and Freddy,

You guys are a 2 people reality show…and more fun to watch than most of the others on TV. You write, act, direct, film and produce the show all by yourselves…and there’s more “reality” in your videos than there is in most of the other shows on TV. Congrats.

Glad you had a good trip. Watched most of the videos and enjoyed them all. I felt like I was there with you but, unfortunately, I never got to taste all of that good food. :-(

    Welcome home.

  8. Hi Zuzana! I definitely agree to what you learned that all you need is a 2 star hotel if your purpose in traveling is really to explore the area.

I got so excited that I found your website!
I’m extremely thin (42 kgs-170 cm) 25 years old girl and have never did a single workout in my life. Have friends that are fitness instructors and martial arts teachers but no one could ever make me do a single stretch.Back in school the only classes I ran away from were P.E. Until recently I started thinking about workouts as I look anorexic tho I eat a lot, a lot.
But for the first time in my life I feel crazy over doing it! And you are outlining everything in such a nice way, you are constantly updating information, you are extremely sexy, sweet crazy names, quality photos, videos, everything is soooooooo perfect!!!
I can’t wait to browse your videos and start!Btw I’m from the Balkans.
The video that sparkled my interest is “Hot Celebrity Butts Workout”.

    My inspiration – YOU!

P.S. Just became a fan of your Life&Travel videos too :D!!!! You two are amazing!
