Gollum Girl in Italian Mordor aka Our Trip to Etna

Hi guys,

Well it couldn’t have all been happy times and fun memories… but if you consider that in 16 days of travel our day trip to Etna was really the only major blunder that we made with our time in Italy I think it’s really not so bad. I think that it just pinched us a little harder because this trip to Sicily’s highest peak took up our last full day on the island, and when you only have a little bit of time left somewhere beautiful you tend to be more sensitive about how you spend that time.

This day trip to Mount Etna was about as fun as choosing to spend a day visiting a coal mine vs. spending the day on a beautiful beach – it was just that horrible. Both Zuzana and I tried to stay in good humour by poking fun at our situation, and we did manage to have a few laughs between mouthfuls of dust and volcanic ash. What we learned from this travel experience is to never take bus excursions. For what we paid to be jammed into a bus with no air conditioning we could have rented a car for 24 hours and remained independent. Even if we had chosen to visit Etna in our rented car, we could have left much earlier and gone on to explore other areas on the island, rather than being trapped in an undesirable location waiting for the bus to return us to our hotel. Bus excursion brochures also tend to be highly misleading in the way that they portray the destination – don’t get fooled by a few fancy pictures. Always strive to be travel independent – there is much more value in being able to come and go as you like then being stuck with a group.

We have just one more video from our Italian adventure, and then we will be getting back to our home workouts so check back for that :)

Best,

Frederick & Zuzana

    Hey guys,

Wao! It’s sad that they make you pay all that money for that. But not everyone can say they’ve been there… so :)

    Hi Frederick and Zuzana,

You have to be into volcanism and geology to really get anything from Etna and the power of the eruptions that have killed thousands of people thru history. I do wonder why you two didn’t hit one more beach or visit the various roman baths or villas with the amazing murals and architecture.

If you guys ever make it to my neck of the woods remind me not to take you to the Channeled Scablands and the areas of ice age floods to see the house sized boulders in the middle of wheat fields and gorges carved in basalt. Maybe we could skip Mount Saint Helens as well. 8-) Or maybe all you really needed was a good tour guide who could have told you the whole amazing stories of the geology.

    Take care,
    –Chris

  • Xtina

Hehe! Our European trip came to an end this past week, as well. We went to another part of Europe, though. Your video’s will come in handy for our future Italy trip and will admire Etna from the bottom, for sure. I have a Lulu jacket just like Zuzana’s. Funny! Welcome back (sort of “back”, on the same continent, I mean)!

  • LauraHapper

That’s so sad that you guys had that terrible experience! But, now you have learned about this mistake and you’ll never do it again!

    Love from Puerto Rico,

    Laura <3

hi. what kind of camera do you use?

  • Bonnie

    Hi Frederick & Zuzana,

Thanks for the tip. Sorry it wasn’t what you guys expected. I can’t wait for a new workout! Get back soon.

  • Tahlee

I love that you guys can still maintain a positive outlook and a sense of humour, even in a bad situation. Plus the photo of Zuzana as Gollum Girl makes me laugh ^_^

  • Valerie

Guys didn`t you have guide who took you on a Etna Tour?

I`ve been to the Etna and it was a great Trip, like beining on a another planet. Running down was the best – like running through deep fresh snow – just it was black lava stone.

  • Shayne{Rick]

I can so identify with a few things: I lived in a tourist town in the rockies for a decade and those trinket shops sell TONS of worthless junk to people who load on and off of busses experiencing very little of the ‘reality’ of their destination.
In a similar vein, I never understood why people like to travel thousands of kilometres only to stay secluded in a resort. I much prefer [like you 2 obviously] to stay in random places and go and explore the surroundings, feel the culture and see the people instead of sitting around a pool at the hotel surrounded by other canadians or americans.
Thanx guys for posting these vids of your trip.

  • Mike Harrington

I just finished watching all of your Italian videos. I didn’t expect to watch them all, I just saw the preview image of Zuzana in a bikini. But then…I was hooked.

You both are very entertaining and remind me of my wife and I when we travel. You should approach a network with this down to earth style of travel insight. “Burpee World”, just kidding you could probably come up with something better.

Anyway, thank you, I really enjoyed the vids.

    Mike

  • Fleur

    Too bad you were trapped.

It is true that all the shops and restaurants are overpriced there and there’s nothing special about the food.

If you go somewhere not knowing why and just because of some brochures. Then it is probably not a good idea to decide to go there.

Going to Etna makes sense only if you are a volcano lover. A volcano lover won’t stop at the shopping mall or restaurant, a volcano lover will go all way to the top and try to get and understand all information about Etna “maaagma” ;-) activity.

Personally I never take tour buses. I think those pre arranged trips can only give you the worst memories ever. Don’t forget they are made to fit to the most people. from 7 to 77 years old. It was very courageous from you daring going on a such trip. We are all learning from our mistakes. That’s why we can only get better in time such as the good wine.

For you what’s left is you can now say you were on the Europe’s most impressive and only active volcano. Yes you went there and got the feeling of the “maaagma” ;-) dust in your mouth ( It just reminded me how now pleasant this feeling is ).

Let’s get back to work I am looking for the New work out. I suggest to name it :
Drop me those pastas, andiamo! andiamo!

    Hi Guys
I have been following your trip and I have enjoyed your travels to Italy. Thank you for sharing your experience. You last day at Etna did indeed look boring you had me laughing so hard. But in in end it was a experience that you both won’t forget throughout your travels. Looking forward to seeing new exercise routines Gloria

  • Ruth

The food was probably terrible because it was filled with dust, lol… thanks for the warning!! Glad you guys made it out :)

    Ruth

  • The Godfather

Well, at least you got to see all that Italian magma lol

  • Katia

    Hi Zuzana and Freddie..

Ive lived next to Mt Etna for three years (right on Catania) and the volcano is really exciting to experience throughout the year.. I went a couple of times when it snowed, had the greatest experience watching hot lava pour down from it.. I really dont think your best bet was to go with a tour. A good tip for the next time you guys take a vacation is to research the hottest spots of the place, etc and go on your own unless its a bus tour of the city etc, but everything else is not worth it. You should have gone to the temples on Agrigento and the beaches on Giraldini-Naxos.. Hope you guys enjoyed your time there though..

  • Timato

I am laughing. Thank you. There is beauty in every moment if we are open to it!

  • Zazu

You guys are hilarious and so fun to watch!

  • http://www.dreamscapesaxis.com Sxean

Zuzana, I’d love to see you doing exercises at the Sphinx in Egypt, then on the Great Wall of China, then in Tibet alongside an actual Shaolin Monastery, then at Stonehenge,… you know.. all those cool New Age places for health !

    :)

  • Natasya

    Oy Z&F, wellcome back.
I have one idea that just popped in too my head. U have so many fans all over the planet. You two could travel around the world with our help. Just name the place and we will help u find hotels, great places for sightseeing and great restaurants.
Is this a great idea or not?

    Have fun,
    Natasya

  • Olga

I want to say “Thank you” for your workout. For me they are very effective. For 5 months I dropped 10 kilograms. Almost back sports figure after childbirth. And I still working on them. May God bless you. Well you rest.

  • desiree

lol, i was laughing so hard listening to Freddy. Glad you guys made it home safe

  • http://classyandglamorous.blogspot.com/ Maria

    Hi!

It’s funny that you are there, just where we were a couple of weeks ago! We stayed in Giordani Naxos and visited Etna, Catania and Taormina.

I really miss new work outs, so when are you going back home? :)

  • mikkel

hihi i really liked the gollum imitation and the MAGMA bit .. had me laughing ^_^ .. well and thanks for the info on where NOT to go :P ..

  • Magda

Freddy, you really made me laugh with your descriptions and comments!
    Regards,

    Mmmmmagda!

  • Dana

    Aw… :)

  • Heather S.O

    miss your work outs !!

  • Charlene

Bummer!! We will not visit there if we make it back to Sicily, you’ve saved us:)

  • Charlene

PS Love the Gollum impression, had me cracking up : )

  • Michael

I feel bad for you….but what did you think you would see at the top of a volcano?? I hiked to the top of Vessuvius and it was the same…also same crappy tourist traps..lol. Volcanoes require an interest in geology or history or both because otherwise they are dull. If it errrupted that would be a differant thing altogether….be glad you don’t get to sample that…lol. I am enjoying your travels…thanks for sharing.

  • Laura

I’m sorry to hear your last full day in Italy was not what you had expected, however, if it helps at least a little bit, I enjoyed your adventure and comments very much… I think we’ve all had that experience in the past and we can relate =)…

(PS: I really enjoyed the video!, you guys made me laugh =), your comments are funny)…

    Laura

  • Évy

Hey, me, again…as my comment is awaiting moderation…
I would like to ask you, if I do (summer fit 6 weeks program) one workout 15-30 min. in am and one cardio 20-30 min. pm, is it too much?…I’m on my 2e week of the program, I progress well already.

  • Shannon L.

    Hi Zuzana and Frederick.
Im so sorry you had a crappy time.
I never have that much fun in a place were theres no water to jump in. It looks like a big desert with holes in it. Unless I can take my ATV and go offroading in the middle of it… it’s pointless to go there.
But hey, it’s all part of your vacation experiance. You’ll look back at Etna and as your telling people about the horible time you had there… you’ll realize that it will turn into a funny story afterall. I wouldn’t recomend tours to anybody. You can’t experiance the place for yourself on your own time.

  • Alisha

you two are hilarious, and i believe i was cracking up within the first 20 seconds.
i have thoroughly enjoyed your video vacation, and you have completely stirred up my traveling fever!

and although this mt. etna was a complete fail, at least it’ll be a good laugh in the end.

  • Oli

Guys, you always make me smile again, when i’m sad… the last couple of days i didn’t have time to watch your videos because i was at work 24/7… and i started feeling so upset and exhausted and lost all of my enthusiasm. I even didn’t have time to excercise… but when i came to your vids again…woooow.. i gives me so much power! I love your attitude so much, so optimistic, happy couple. It always starts to push me forward when i feel the lack of energy to do something, when i want to give up everything (not just exercising)… Guys, thank you so much! Now, I decided to watch at least one of your videos every day (even, when i’m very busy), to recharge my enthusiasm back… I can’t explain it in words, i just feel it. :)

  • nelita

Hey guys I loved how you made a video blog of your Italian adventure. Its so weird, but I love watching you guys, this makes me want to do something similar with my husband. I was wondering what do you guys do for a living? It seems like you guys have so much time to indulge on your marriage. ‘am so jelous………….Congratulations you guys make such a great couple!!!!!

  • Heather

Oh MY! You had me guffawing…I love watching Zuzana-Pollyana trying DESPERATELY to conjure SOMETHING positive from the Modor ash-heap as Freddy’s continuous dry rants eventually override her waning optimistic efforts! SCENERIO 1: Zuzana: “…but the air is SO fresh…” Freddy: “This whole place is DEATH” Z: “Ooooh,I wonder what’s over there…?” F: “You’ve seen one Haides hole, you’ve seen ‘em all…” SCENERIO 2: Zuzana: “I’m breathing dust, and the food tastes like ash, this place has not earned my Burpee!” Freddy: “I haven’t seen a drop of LIQUID in the last four torturous hours – Magma ate my money.” LOVE YOU GUYS ;)

    Heather

  • haitham27

miss your work outs !! Realy enjoy your holiday

  • Maurice

Both of you are a wonderful couple to watch in your Italian videos. I felt as if I was there right with you, but only if I could smell the food from the restaurants that you dined.

I have incorporated different exercises from your workouts into mine. I love my workouts now. Zuzana, your workouts are inspiring.

Zuzana, I made your Czech Zemlovka recipe, but I added fresh blueberries to it. My family loves it.

Thank you for sharing your lives with us. I look forward to each and every post and video.

    You both rock!!

  • Yayeri

You two are such great sports…yet you keep it real. Thanks for the heads up…Glad you enjoyed most of the vacay! (Your commentary on that last video had me rolling!) Tourist traps are the worst!

  • http://www.margaritavailas.com Margarita

Sorry you guys were bored, but this was one of the funniest videos!! haha

  • Rod

Irony and sarcasm are a must to make bad decisions and awful moments more bareable. And you did save me from going there, too.
On the other hand, I just came from a kinda spiritual-work-relaxation trip (I know) to a not very touristic beach in Mexico, more like a very rural one (no phone, electricity nor hotels) and had the time of my life.

Actually it was the first of more trips to come in the process to change my place of living. Perhaps, I’ll be glad to show you around if I ever have the honor of having you come here.

    Cheers

    Hi Frederick and Zusanna,
so glad you visited Sicily, I live in Sicily but on the other side of the island in Marsala, in western Sicily.
Taormina is beautiful, as for your Etna experience, I agree, much better to get a rental car, but still, you were on Europe’s biggest and tallest active volcano, I find it quite haunting, loved the Lord of the Rings references, you guys are so great btw, Zusanna you are saving my life as I follow your exercise vids, and I am working out with you in part back to health from extreme obesity, I adore you both! Blessings xo Dea

  • Alina

You guys are freaking hilarious! I love your sense of humor and just a general outlook on life. Sorry, you had a bad experience at Etna, but I am glad you posted this video, it’s true, I guess you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into, until you actually experience it. I am appauled at the prices of this trip, that’s crazy!
Thanks for posting all the videos of your vacation, I really enjoyed watching them, even this one, you had me laughing, so I guess it’s not a complete waiste :)

    Thanks,

    Alina

  • Jenn

Ha ha…I like the Gollum impersonation.

Sorry you didn’t enjoy that part of your trip, but your video is encouraging me to go to Mt. Etna the next time I’m in Italy, just not via tour bus.

I just got done with a family camping trip in the Cascades…and enjoyed hiking on a few volcanoes. Mt. Rainier was especially fun because it still had a lot of slippery, slushy snow on it. A few spots on the way down were so slippery that we (me, my husband, and our daughter) decided to slide down our bums- that was fun!

    -Jenn

  • Anna / PA

    Hi Guys :)

I know what the “last day” feels like!…
I recently returned from a wonderful trip to the Mayan Riviera and the last day started very anxiously and frustrating. Luckily, the place we spent it (Akumal bay) was so heavenly, that shortly after we settled under one of the coconut palms my awful mood vanished… I had never yet experienced such a rapid positive mood change just by being at a beautiful place. And never yet had a week go by so fast!

If you haven’t yet been there, I suggest you consider the Mayan Riviera (Mexico) for your next “last minute adventure”. I’ve been watching your videos for a while, and I think there’s A LOT for you to enjoy there.

The beaches are far better than in Italy, there are lots of good restaurants (even Italian ones ;)) everything is so bright and colorful!.. Snorkeling (for example, in Akumal and Cenote Azul) is amazing! So easy even for not-so-confident swimmers, and so much to see – fish, turtles, stingrays…
If you don’t dare do as Rod did (tho this would be the best!), choose any small town as a starting point (just maybe not Cancun :)). Local transportation is quite good, everything is easy to reach; and you can quickly find great condos at sites like flipkey and homeaway, or just book a 3-star hotel room.

Let me know if you need any tips or info (unlike you, I spent months preparing for this trip! LOL)

  • michel Montreal

This is what I call a tourist trap !
Thanks for showing me what I wont be missing on my next trip to Italy .

  • Caroline

Which jacket are you wearing? It looks great on you and I want one :) I couldn’t seem to find it on lululemon (saw the logo in the video) Do you know what it’s called?

  • http://www.cardinalmess.blogspot.com Sandra

Where did all your videos of your trip to Italy go? :(
