Travel, Travel, Travel….

Hi BodyRockers,

We just wanted to update you on our travels west through Canada and to let you know that we are safe and sound. We left Kingston, Ontario on Friday August 13th at around 5pm. Today (Tuesday, August 17th) we are just getting ready to leave Winnipeg Manitoba. The Province of Ontario seemed to stretch on endlessly, but we finally made it into Manitoba last night. Ontario offered some spectacular views – especially when the road wound around Lake Superior. We have a set number of miles that we want to cover each day, so a lot of time the sights tend to go by through the window of the car, but we did manage to snap some pictures along the way – mostly when we stopped for gas. We are hoping to get in a new workout soon – the timing has been tough on the road, but keep up with your training by challenging yourself to some of the older routines. We will check in with you guys soon.

There are signs along the highway warning of all kinds of wildlife – my favourite are the “Moose on the Loose” signs. We have been very careful not to stop too close to the edges of the forests along the road when we walk the dogs (and pee) because we know that there could be bears, and we are both terrified of running into a bear. This black bear was strung up at one of the gas stations that we stopped at.  It is strange that you can feel so sorry for an animal that you are terrified of when you see it like this. It didn’t leave us with a good feeling so we got out of there very quickly.

This was our first view of Lake Superior. We wanted to stop long enough to put our hands in the water and take some pictures. The wind was quite cool, but the water felt surprisingly warm. We started to get paranoid about bears so we ran back to the truck :)

We made a special point of stopping at the Terry Fox Memorial just outside of ThunderBay. The story of Terry Fox is hugely inspiring to us.

Here I am chatting with you guys about our trip. We have been shooting video here and there, but by the time we finally get to our hotel each night we tend just to flop down on the bed and crash. We are planning on putting together a video of our trip once we arrive in British Columbia.

My Dad has worked for Hostess (now Frito Lay) for over 40 years. I remember these trucks from when I was a kid and it was cool to find this old abandoned Hostess trailer behind a run down gas station. I thought my Dad would get a kick out of this picture :)

Gas, Gas, Gas… prices have gone up the further north we traveled. When we left Kingston, the price of gas was 99 cents a litre. The most we have paid so far is $1.21 which makes “filling er up” much more expensive.

Dear Zuzana and Freddy, thank you for sharing your journey with us ! It’s always a great pleasure to hear from you and I must admit, I check your website everyday to get the latest posts ;)

The picture with the bear is amazing, I would not believe you could see such things ….

Enjoy your road trip and take care :)

  • Ashley

Beautiful pictures! I agree with you on the one of the bear though … Very sad! Happy travels! :)

  • Monifah

Hi Guys!! Looks very beautiful!! I actually forgot if there was a goal in this trip but it looks like great fun.

I actually have a question for all BodyRockers!!
Please give me your opinion on the Paleo Diet /Caveman diet. Very curious to hear what you all think about it. It is usually associated with HIIT/CrossFit and kettlebell training..

    Thank you all :o)

  • Celina

I hope to be able to drive across Canada one day. For now I can imagine what it is like through your pictures and stories. Thanks for posting them! :)

BTW, don’t worry about the bears. I’ve encountered many bears and I can assure you that they are more afraid of people than people are of them. Your picture of the dead hanging bear is a testament to that. :(

  • shaune

Great to see the pictures, thanks guys. The bear picture is extremely sad, how heartless some people are. Have fun, looking forward to more workouts, Shaune

  • Amberlee

That’s cool that you are in Winnipeg! (Well not that Winnipeg is cool, just that I live in Winnipeg and was doing one of your workouts yesterday and it is weird that you were in town at the same time.)

It’s too bad the weather has been lame. I hope you enjoyed yourself ;)

  • Mary Westbrook

    Hi Travelers,

What a great summer of traveling the two of you have had. You both are inspiring to so many people in many different ways. Introducing food to food lovers, work outs to exercise fans and traveling for those that love to travel. These are the three aspects of life, aside from Family, that are an important part of a balanced life.

I have to say the picture of the bear was disturbing. Nature gives us so much and it is these pictures that make me scratch my head and wonder how someone can be so cruel. Its the person that has hung this bear that I would fear, not the bear. If it weren’t for nature we would not be able to survive.

Thank you for all you do for all of us!:)

    Hey Zuzana!

We, at U.N.I Training, would love for you to stop at our studio in Montreal and film one of your workouts here! Check out our website unitraining.ca and let us know if you can make it!

    Sincerely,
    U.N.I Training Team

  • Ashley in Sweden

    Hey Z/F,

It sounds like you two are having a great time (although tiring at times). Being Canadian, I was really surprised and disgusted to see the picture of the bear hanging by its ankles. It just seems so barbaric to display any once living creature that way.

Anyway, I can’t wait to see more updates :)

  • Jennifer

Oh yeah we pay $3.50 a gallon here in N. CA

  • Cinthya

    Have fun guys!!!

found a really interesting article through a health coach “Your Wellness Tree” via her facebook fan page : http://www.organicauthority.com/foodie-buzz/what-is-in-fast-food-chicken-hint-its-not-chicken.html

It’s about what’s really in a chicken nugget!!

  • Canadian

Glad to know you guys are safe and sound! Haha..if you think there are bears out there, wait til you get to Alberta and BC ;) If you see them on the highway from your car, thats not much to worry about..compared to when you’re camping or hiking! All the best :)

  • DD

ive been all over your site today checking it every hour to see what tould come up!!!!!

soo excited for you guys!!!!! you dont have to post a new workout if you feel too tired because there are enough workouts on this site trust me!!!! :P
im goign to do the love handle eercise now….
    cya later

  • Allysia

You guys should stop in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and come see the South Saskatchewan River and our 7 bridges :)

  • Christy R.T.

    Hi guys,

I’m glad you are having a great trip! I bet it’s a beautiful road trip. I’ve enjoyed your pictures but found the bear picture a little disturbing. I would have had to inquire about the bear and what was the purpose to have him strung up like that. Was he dead?

I hope you both enjoy the remainder of your trip.:)

  • kika

Have fun on your trip. Last year I spent three weeks traveling on the west coast of Canada and the USA and it was so much fun! Don´t be afraid of bears, last year we got to see only one in Yellonstown from very very long distanc, and we only found out that there was a bear, because there was a bunch of tourists watching it:-D

  • Solomon Schweitzer

Been following ur workouts for some time now & they are a great addition to my running routine. Thank you for this!

Have a safe & enjoyable trip u guys! Peace-out for now!

Best wishes from the NorCal! ~Solomon

  • gina

that pic with the bear is so saddd..i cried…isn’t a sign good enough? =(

i would prob scream like a nut if i saw that…

  • http://rathernotsay Sabrina

loll bears shouldnt bug u especially with your doggies around. This time of year bears are really minding their own buisness. If your really afraid you need to get some pepper spray and carry it with you but the black bears shouldnt be a real problemm. I love the terry fox memorial. When i was a kid we drove up on him while he was running accross canada. he spoke to us and patted our heads (my bro and I)MY parents donated some money and we were all super impressed with him although at the time we had no idea what an icon he was to become. He is still an inspiration to me as well!! Thanks for posting and be safe on your journey. Peace :D

  • Karen (a native Texan living in Florida)

Awwwh, seeing the bear breaks my heart. I know they are dangerous but obviously, so are we dangerous to them.
    Very sad! :(

Thanks for sharing your trip, having never been to Canada, it’s interesting to see the sights.

    take care

  • jazziebell

lucky. its $3.05-3.15 a gallon. here in california

  • http://www.peacefulbend.com/kT Katie

Great scenery in those shots. Enjoy the rest of your travels! I’m off to search the web and find out who Terry Fox is now.

  • Tracey

Freddy hasn’t hung Callie out the window yet, has he? lol I think you need the Dog Whisperer! Have a safe rest of the journey. Always looking forward to new videos!! :)

  • Angie

    Hey Freddy and Zuzana!

I love the fact that you two are exploring Canada and sharing all its wonders with us as you go. I was just wondering if you were on vacation from your work? Or do your jobs allow you to travel freely? I really hope to visit all of Canada one day too, but for now- I’ll just stick to looking at all the pictures you’ve guys have been posting:). Best of luck with your travels!!

    Angie

P.S. It’s good to see Freddy up and well again!

  • http://karateisgoodforyou.ca Zuzana O

    Hey guys!
I just wanna wish you a safe and enjoyable trip. You definitely made the right choice to go west. BC is absolutely gorgeous. Vancouver is a perfect choice for active and health oriented people who like to enjoy their life – like the two of you!
Just be warned!!! Once you visit you will never wanna leave ;-)

  • Lvette #1

Glad to see you guys are getting on alright. I am with you guys on the bear. I was a tree planter at one time in my life and I use to freak myself out while planting about bear attacking, until we’d had to kill one. Seeing a dead bear is one of the saddest thing I have witness. It got me to start questioning my presence in their environment.

My workout today was the Advanced Bodyweight Workout. Its took me 15:20:32 to complete all 5 videos.

  • http://www.naughtyweds.com MrsNaughtywed

Awwww you made it through my home town and I see you did go see the Terry Fox monument!

  • Valerie

random question but how do you two come up with these killer workouts? I wonder how you guys always seem to kick our behinds lol :)
    Have a safe trip :)
    Valerie

  • candace

You guys go on amazing trips and vacations all the time and I was just wondering if you both have other jobs that you do besides bodyrock tv?

    Thanks,
    candace

  • La

oh that bear made me soooo sad, that is awful:( I am glad to hear you are safe and sound- sometimes I worry about you guys like family when you are MIA for a few days lol

  • Courtney

    Have you gone through Saskatchewan!?

  • Tracey

Thanks so much for sharing these pics! I miss Canada so much! I only spent one month in Vancouver and the Rockies but it has left me craving a return :) I know what you mean about petrol/gas, only a little while ago it was 70 cents a litre here in australia, and now 120 cents is cheap. We pay up to 140 somedays. Good to see Freddy off crutchers, i hope to be off mine completely in 3 more weeks, making it 13 weeks total of no walking!

  • Leo

I heard Alberta has got some good gas prices haha so fill ‘er up there for sure! It’s good to see your trip is going well! Keep traveling, stay safe, and when you enter B.C look out for fires!

    One Love

  • Colin A.

Welcome to Winnipeg!!! :-D. I hope you guys continue to have a speedy and safe trip!

  • Alteredstory

I’m not sure if this is the right part of the site to ask this, but it’s the most recent video, so I figured I’d give it a shot.

I know you’ve mentioned the need to eat carbs shortly after a workout to prevent your body from going into starvation mode and consuming muscle, but I was wondering how that relates to recent food consumption.

In this example I had dinner around 6 (salad, chowder, crackers), and then was treated to ice cream (mint chip from a local chocolatier) around 7-ish, and didn’t get to my workout till 10:15.

I sort of assumed that I had had enough carbs with dinner and the ice cream that it would sustain my body just fine till breakfast, but I’m not sure, so I was wondering if anyone in the Bodyrock family had any knowledge of how long after a meal the carbs are still useful as reserve against intense exercise.

Any answers or links to research would be much appreciated.

  • Nicole D Lopez

Awesome! Thanks for this little update :)

  • Nicole D Lopez

Oh, I forgot to say: The bear picture is super sad to me. I love bears. I’m going to school to study bears right now. Humans need to find more humane ways of dealing with them.
Black bears, like the one hanging up there in the picture, are not even that much of a threat to humans. You could most likely just punch one in the face to escape an attack.
I saw a black bear outside my back door the other night and I accidentally scared him off just by being too loud while I was trying to film him :(
Anyway though, I just wanted to vent about that. Thanks, k, bye.

    ….You guys rock!

  • Michelle

Bears wont hurt you, more than likely it will just want to get the hell out of there too. haha

  • Joe Smith

that’s equivalent to ~ 81 cents/litre.. don’t know how us Canadians come off lucky there…

  • Elaine

Hi Zuzana and Freddy, greetings from Singapore. Your workouts have been very inspiring to me and my partner and we’re working hard to achieve that great body. Enjoy your trip! Cheers!

  • Iris

Hi Mary, you speak out of my mind!

  • Ali

I would love to visit Canada, and maybe live some time there. I heard that is a good place for grow up a family, and give really importance to education, plus the weather and natural views wich are amazing.
I born in a beautiful country (Mexico), with a lot of diversity, and actually im in a place with extremly hot weather, so i guess i can enjoy a vacation there, some fresh air.

    thanks for sharing!

  • Gina

okay i wasn’t sure where to post this, but i found this recipe with a lot of good veg. meals. Thought you might like to try some. Enjoy! http://www.dailyunadventuresincooking.com/

  • Tania

I must say that i cried a lot for the poor bear, i love the animals, and when i see how so cruel it can be the human, some times i hate to be one of them, but i really want to believe that we can change that, i wish that, i belieave in that, because if some people not believe that, great part of the Earth already would be dead……………….So……..LOVE THE EARTH, TAKE CARE OF THE EARTH, BE PART OF THE EARTH, AND WE`LL HAVE A HOME FOR A LONG TIME……….

  • olgi

Thank you for keeping us posted on your trip:) I too would be afraid to run into a bear, as they have a natural instinct to protect themselves, however I was disgusted by the hanging bear pic, Im glad i was not seeing this in person:( thanks again for the good and the sad of your trip:)( its good for us to know how other people think-

  • ivy

….omg @ the black bear.. is that really a real bear? please tell me its not.. :[ thats so upsetting to see…. :/

well, anyways, onto a happier topic..
hope your guys’ trip is going super well! have a great time and be safe! thanks zuzana and freddy, for everything! hope to see you two soon(:

  • http://fithappyhealthy.com Anita

Hi guys – glad to see you’re progressing well (and safely). Don’t forget to have fun, you’re on an adventure :)

Hey – how is Charlie’s skin doing? Is he getting better?

  • http://metrobloggen.se/365days Linda in Sweden

I just love Canada since I used to live there and I would love to move back one day! I am looking forward for you to post your next workout video! Take care!

  • Anna Carolina

So sad the picture with the bear.

But the picture with Fred and the Hostess trailer behind is amazing!! It tells a little story..hehe.I would frame it!

    Take care of you guys!
    Lovely Regards, Carol

  • Alteredstory

Agreed on the black bears. I’ve run into a number while backpacking, and all it usually takes is a shout to send them running.

Grizzlies, on the other hand, terrify me. I’ve never hiked in Grizzly country, and I’m just fine with that!

  • http://www.pure2raw.com Pure2raw twins

    Have safe travels!

We are off to our workout! We are sore from the ones earlier this week ; )

  • dakota

Remember your in their home and your considered the intruder. I think that applies to all wildlife. It’s great that you two can travel like this. I’m a 9 to 5 kind of guy that is working toward retirement :-) Have fun and enjoy!

  • Celina

Black bear hunting is not uncommon in Canada and it is most likely that the bear was strung up to bleed it out since people do eat bear meat.

  • Kendra

I live in Vancouver, if I see you guys I will definitely ask for your autograph!

  • audrey

nice pics..except the one of the bear…that was upsetting!!!!!

  • Mickela

In terms of bears, if you see a mommy bear with cubs, that is when you should be really careful, on the average bears will mind their own business, just keep your food in the trunk well packed and yes keep the doggies under check.

I had my tent destroyed by bears in Alaska years ago, they took my make up and tooth paste and the tent was ripped to shreds.

I wanted to ask all bodyrockers what has been your most inspiring routine, exercise or idea on bodyrock.tv site?

for me it was skipping rope and the pistol squats and the cool timer workouts.

  • Jennifer

Please don’t be afraid of bears. They are more afraid of you, and will most times run away from you before you have a chance to see them. I go running in the mountains ALONE all the time and have NEVER run into a bear I even bring my dog, and we see nothing but squirrels, deer, chipmunks and birds. Even when I ran in the Canadian Death Race, I NEVER saw a bear – and that is Grizzley country. Bears get dangerous only if you try to feed them, and when they lose the fear of humans. They are very beautiful and if you are lucky enough to see one from your car while driving, enjoy how beautiful they truly are!!

  • Jennifer

I forgot to say I live in Calgary and am in Kananaskis ALL the time – and NEVER run into bears!!! People who are telling you that you will see them FOR SURE here are blowing smoke up your @$$. The grizzly bear is listed as endangered in parts of Canada. In May 2002, the Canadian Species at Risk Act listed the Prairie population (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba range) of grizzly bears as being wiped out in Canada. Here is a link to avoid running into bears if you go hiking or camping:http://www.srd.alberta.ca/RecreationPublicUse/AlbertaBearSmart/Default.aspx

  • Steve
  • John

$1.21 a gallon, boo hoo!!! I pay $3.35 a gallon in San Jose Ca. Love the pictures and I’m so jealous that you guys can go travel at the drop of a hat. Keep the updates coming.

  • Kei

I wish you safe travels as you continue on in your journey. Vancouver is definitely worth it!

I’d love to hear what you guys are eating along the way. I find it so hard to eat healthy when I’m on a road trip. Any suggestions?

  • Alicia

that bear picture is incredibly depressing ): A bear would defend itself if it feels threatened and hunt for meat for food maybe, but they would never display your carcass for all to see and perhaps enjoy.

and wait $1.21 gas? What, we have it at around $2.50 here D: unless the measuring is different?

  • lulu

Poor bear! That picture is really disturbing :(

  • Douglas from Malaysia

When I was young, I studied about the Great Lakes of Canada and that was few decades ago. Never did it cross my mind that one day I can see the beauty of this part of the world thru your camera lens. Terima Kasih – That’s thanks in my language.

  • http://www.juri-klaric.com Juri Klaric

I have to say something about the bear pic. It’s really sad to see the worst species on earth at work. I find myself ashamed in being human!!!!

  • Laura S

you guys should come to newfoundland!!! (although gas is ridiculous here the awesomeness makes up for it!)

  • Audra

    Hi Zuzana,

Since you’ll be on the road and pressed for time I thought of a quick bodyweight workout for you and Freddy to try. It’s 3 rounds of 5 exercises and if you do maximum intensity you should finish it in around 12 minutes.

    20-Prisoner Squat & KneeUp
20-Pushups (I did 5 each of diamond, military, regular, & wide)
    30-Side Jump Lunge
    20-Mountain Climber
    15-One-Leg Deadlift Jump(each side)

Or if you want a longer workout you can add 2 more rounds for about a 20 minute workout. Give it a try and let me know if you like it :)

  • Notsolucky

Actually jazziebell, you are the lucky one. 1 gallon is 3.785411 liters per gallon(US), therefore the cost is approx. $3.75 to $4.58 per gallon.

  • Dale

You are still away cheaper than the Canadian price.
At $1.21 per liter, this would work out to $4.68 per gallon even if the Canadian dollar was at par which it is not!

  • Jeanine

I’ve been watching you guys for a few months now and you’ve given me a lot of ideas/plans and motivation to make my body the best I can make it =). Thank you!

Also, I’m glad to see that gas prices in your “neck of the woods” are at $1.21, because in Southern California, well we pay a good $3.15 or so per gallon.

Have a safe trip. God Bless.

  • http://www.createspace.com/3357525 Rosemary

haha we pay $3.00 here per gallon. you should travel america. like arizona, colorado, upstate new york. they have beautiful wildlife and landscapes for you to explore. theres even a hotel inside the grand canyon near a waterfall. its very nice:D

  • Courtney

just wondering if you’re going to be stopping in Saskatchewan? I’m from Moose Jaw!

  • Courtney

oh, haha, and I’m not the same Courtney as before! :)

  • MERCY

Is that picture of the stones set atop one another supposed to be a “bodyrocker”? LOL. Thanks for sharing your trip and photos.

  • Anariki

I totally agree w/Sabrina all they needed was some pepper spray no need to hang the poor thing,I hate when people do stuff like that I wonder how’d they feel hung upside down…I love the scenery pics tho I went on a cruise to Alaska once and stopped in Canada it was beautiful..good luck on the rest of the trip :o)

  • Tha Forkmaster

Well buhuu.. They said per litre!! And one gallon is about 3.8 litre.. so, now do the math! ;)

  • Tha Forkmaster

Litre and gallon not the same you know!?!? 1 Gallon = 3.8 litre!!

  • http://ozziepossum-diyhealthfitness.blogspot.com/ ozziepossum

I’m more scared of skunks than of bears :) I got stalked by a skunk in a camp ground in USA once. Totally freaked me out!

Aussie Aussie Aussie, Bears are (not) cuddly!

  • LeMarge

    Jazziebell

Canadian gas is sold by Litre, which means we need 4.54 L to make one US Gallon. So Cdn gas at $1.14/L – which it is right now in Vancouver, means it would cost $5.18 per US Gallon.

And Northern prices – like the $1.21 Freddie quoted – means they paid $5.49/US Gallon, yikes – where’s Costco when you need them?!

I just calculated the cost per Litre of gas in California – Holy heck, that’s good old a days prices in Canada – 68 cents a litre. I do remember gas being that low but not for years. People are all a buzz and there are line ups if gas drops to 98 cents a litre in Vancouver! ($4.42/US Gal)

Gas prices aside, I love Canada. There are lovely things about being in a socialized country, but the taxes aren’t one of them.

    LeMarge

  • Lauren

Glad you guys are having fun though it just plain ticked me off to see someone hang an animal up like that. Bears are beautiful (not that I want to get up close to one)….just pitiful.

  • Denise

gas in Ontario is so much cheaper than the rest of Canada. dunno why but gas in BC is about $1.17 right now.

  • Jessica NL

Nice trip, but the gas isn’t that expensive in comparison with the Netherlands, we pay around 1.45 euro. In our country we just have to many taxes going on.

Have a great trip (if you’re still on your trip), be blessed.

    Regards from the Netherlands

  • Gigi

Glad to see you guys are treking a long. Agree that the bear strung up is quite disturbing just another sign that humans are the most dangerous animal. Safe journey, thank you so much for sharing.

  • Lorraine

    Hi Monifah,
My boyfriend is a big fan of the diet – in fact he has been doing it for quite a few months now and says he wont go back to eating as he did before. I’ve been doing it as well, but not as long and I must say it has made quite a difference to both of us. I am not good on the science part of it though, I leave that to him to read up on and he just tells me what I should and should not eat. He does all the cooking so that makes it very easy for me.

  • Bev. Blaney

    Hey Corn:
How’s the traveling. Loved the Hostess truck photo – time flies eh?
    Why hang a dead bear?
    Take Care.

  • http://www.kalaikennedy.com Kennedy

Do you have a work out plan that is safe for a pregnant woman and one to do post-baby to get back in shape? If not, would you make a routine that pregnant women/post pregnant women could do to be in shape and to blast the baby fat? I am sure at least half of the pregnant women around the US would love to try it.

    Thanks so much!!

  • Frederick

Hi BB – we love you!!!!

  • monifah

Thanks Lorraine, very good to hear it works for you guys (and easy enough he does the cooking LOL) but I am also curious about the scientific part because there are a lot of things contradicting eachother, I would hear one thing and think ‘Yes, exactly, so true!’ and than the next thing I would think that it’s a lot of BS. It is difficult to form an opinion about it.
What about fruit?? Just berries or something for you?And fat lossand/or muscle gain??

  • Diana

Actually, in Canada gas is measured per litre not by the gallon. So the price is closer to $4.57 per gallon.

  • Amanda

Why is that bear hung like that??!!! I am a huge animal lover and that pic just makes me want to cry!!! What is the purpose of this practice?? We all need to understand that this is their earth too!!

    Keep up the great workouts!!

  • Olya

Hi Kennedy! do Z’ workouts on the regular basis with no effort to spare, I’m sure you will have no problem shedding baby waight ,if not getting even better body! Just DO it! It works!!

  • ZedaGlam

Gas is way more expensive than that in Vancouver. I live in Seattle, but have some family friends in Vancouver and man were you lucky to get 99cents per liter!!!
And about the bears..there are lots in the northwest but don’t be afraid of them..unless it’s a mother with her cubs, they’ll leave people alone..just don’t run in the wilderness by yourself without a can of bear spray (special pepper spray that sprays abou 2 meters ahead of you..)
    you’ll love the northwest!!
come visit Seattle (when it’s not raining)
make sure to go to the waterfront, get some clam chowder at Ivars and if you go to Pike Place Market, the first Starbucks is located there.. :) only 3 hour drive from vancouver

  • Dominator953

Did you go see anything in Winnipeg, MB? I didn’t see pictures. That is where I live

Thunder Bay is my home town where I grew up and the Terry Fox monument was one of my favourite inspirational places in Thunder Bay. I finally got to go home for Christmas and I wanted to get some pictures of the Terry Fox lookout again. So while I was there I did a burpee for you guys! :) Cheers! http://www.twitvid.com/LD9YU
