Sleeping In My Car

Hi BodyRockers!

The adventure continues…

We are just getting ready to pull out of Calgary, Alberta on our road trip across Canada to Vancouver. This is the video of our first couple of days on the road – looking back it seems like a million miles ago (and it just about was). It seems like we have been skipping across the country from one Tim Horton’s Coffee shop to the next, guzzling down as many litres of extra large coffees as our Buick is gas. The miles are starting to slip by faster now, and we are getting closer to the west coast. In Regina Saskatchewan we stopped at the local Chapters book store and picked up a pile of audio-books (we burned through the 80′s greatest hits cd’s before we left the Province on Ontario). We highly recommend audio-books for long road trips!

Yesterday we had a bit of a gas scare – we passed by the chance to gas up in a city called “Medicine Hat” and headed out into the lonely wheat fields and cattle farms of Alberta with only half a tank of fuel. What we didn’t know is that once our Buick’s fuel gauge reaches the half way point it plummets to 1/4 of a tank almost immediately. There we were coasting along in the middle of nowhere with the sun just starting to set down over the horizon and we were still just under 200km outside of Calgary. The first town we came to had a huge sign that read “NO FUEL” – I think it was around this point that we started to panic a little bit. We made a roadside pit stop to pee and immediately we were attacked by a black cloud of the largest mosquito’s that I have ever seen. We retreated back to the truck and were amazed to see the bugs swarming around the windows trying to get in. Zuzana said that it was like a Zombie movie. Driving away it sounded like it was lightly raining, but what we soon discovered was that it was actually the sound of thousands of bugs hitting the truck and splattering on the grill and windshield.

Thankfully we limped into a gas station not long after on dead empty. It was the last station before Calgary and we were just damn lucky to make it. Can you guys imagine standing at the side of the road at night looking for help in the middle of nowhere with blood sucking zombie mosquitos on the loose in the dark? We were both never so happy to collapse into our motel :)

Talk soon,

Frederick & Zuzana

  • Michaela

You guys are so cute ! Wish you good luck with your trip and with the new place !

  • Malerie

    Hey Guys!!
Happy to hear you were in Calgary last night, I live here! Ya the eastern half of Alberta is all prairies and small towns but if you passed by Brooks there should have been gas stations there! Its about 200kms east of Calgary. Once you get past Calgary, its absolutely beautiful heading into the foothills and the mountains and you get the best view! From Calgary you can get to Vancouver in 1 day if you really motor! Best of luck and looking forward to hearing more about your travels!

    Hi Frederick and Zuzana,

I always carry a gallon of gas when on a long road trip just for this kind of problem. I throw it on the zombie mosquitoes…oops…meant I put it in the car and drive like hell away from them. 8-)

I think most of us who have done road trips of any distance have had similar experiences especially with low gas and no station insight!

    You to be safe!
    –Chris

  • Évy

    Hi guys ;)
    Keep going!
    Ideas to pass the time:
    -sing songs :)
-play games like ”how many red cars or birds you can see”
-make some massages to the one who’s driving
    -tell jokes
    ;)
Have a nice ”long driving” trip :)

  • Dawn

Can’t wait to see more pictures of your journey across Canada. Sounds like it’s been an adventure. Too bad you couldn’t spend more time in Calgary (my hometown), however you will love Vancouver! Hopefully the smoke in the air won’t get worse as you travel west. Looking forward to new workouts (maybe at Stanley Park?)

  • Leo

Freddy is right Zuzana, you do look beautiful. And Freddy, I’m digging your shades, your rockin’ them *thumbs up* Good going with the Tim Horton’s coffee, good fuel to keep you up. :D It’s good to know you are almost here! It’s cloudy, and a bit of rain is around, but the weather here in Vancouver is so un predictable that even the weather men/women on the news channels never have a good idea. The sun will probably start burning through the clouds before we know it. :D Stay awake, make it safe, and no more gas scares! If the both of you were to get stuck with a bunch of mosquitoes… Ouch haha. Take care you two! Cali and Charlie also of course!

    One Love

  • Teresa

You two rock! I love your blog…I watch it daily. Sometimes more than once I day as I explore videos I haven’t seen. Your dogs are so cute and Zuzana…you can NEVER look bad…you’re beautiful! Drive safe and I’ll keep watching for your new posts…
    Teresa

Oh my gosh, you guys have almost made it! Cross Canada road trips are something you will remember for the rest of your lives, no kidding ;) Glad you made it safely to the gas station before the mosquitoes got you! Eeeep!

  • John

Ahhhhh…. Im from North Dakota. Just south of there. Lots of miles and miles of just miles and miles. If mosquitos were a national resource we in this area of the world would be billionaires.

  • Ash

I like these short-story trip reports they are fun to read.

I would be terrified seeing all those mosquitoes. Good to hear you guys made to the motel alright.

  • http://www.janetspreiter.com Janet

After watching and reading your adventures, I have scratched “drive across Canada” from my list of things I must do! You hang in there! And, what? no burpees amidst the vampire mosquitoes??!

  • http://www.janetspreiter.com Janet

And don’t feel bad about not doing a workout…you are doing car yoga!

  • Kandi

Hahaha!!! Zombie mosquitos…that is a perfect way to describe those little reascals! They can be pretty bad in Texas…

  • Tammy

Hi Guys! YOu’ll be passing through Revelstoke, BC on your way to Vancouver – make sure you stop in for a visit to my beautiful town – one of your body rock followers lives there – ME!!!
Have a safe journey – unfortunatley there is a lot of forest fires in BC right now, so you’ll be under a hazy cloud….
If you need a tour guide – call me at 250-814-9405!
    Tammy

  • Mike

You guys are inspiring me to travel! =)

  • DD

    wow!!!!
i would freak out if i were you guys!!!

nice to know ypure okay though

    cant wait for more!!!
    have fun!!

  • Nicole D Lopez

    So great!
I wish I was able to buckle down like you guys do in your workouts. Every time I move my workouts and my diet is the first to go. I never get fat, but I just lose a lot of my muscle and my good eating habits. I’m staying where I live now for a few years, so it will be a lot easier to get back in awesome shape. I’m about ready to get everything together and get going, but I just wish I could go inside y’alls minds and learn how you do it :)

  • http://bodyrock.tv Sophia From Hamilton, On, Canada

Woow seemed like a long ride for you guys ?
    but its worth it
you get to see everything up close :)
and Freddy was right Zuzana, you are beautiful..always :)
i just love reading your blogs and seeing your videos
    you both are great :)

  • http://reshapingmelissa.blogspot.com/ Melissa

Actually, I can! haha I live a few hours west of Medicine Hat, You DO NOT go outside near the highways at night. It’s insane! A few weeks ago I was driving back from Calgary, and the sunset was so pretty so I wanted to get out to take a picture, I swear I had like 20 mosquito bites in all of 10 seconds.

Too late now, but you should have skipped past Calgary and headed into Lethbridge, and kept going to Vancouver from there! Much more scenic, and a tad shorter :p

I’m so excited for you guys to be out on this side of the country. You will love it! Vancouver is a gorgeous city, Vancouver Island is my favourite place in the whole world, it’s SO beautiful! Be sure to make trips inland and check out all of the great hiking and camping!

  • alondra

hello, I like to share with us your travel adventure, I hope you are home soon. regards

  • Teryn

    Hi guys!

I actually just moved from Guelph, Ontario to Edmonton, Alberta and first of all stopped at Terry Fox museum too! Also, the drive along Lake Superior is one of the most amazing parts of our Country! I hear you on the mosquitos though, they are crazy intense here, outside running or walking my dog is always interesting trying to avoid being eaten alive! Plus the smoke here is intense from the forest fires in B.C. currently! I still haven’t made it to B.C. yet but hope to soon!

Also, I just stumbled on your site and love it! I needed something new to push myself to lose the last 5/tone up to get the body I have always wanted :) Keep it up!!
    Cheers,
    Teryn

  • Sola

So you guys left the farm house for good?

  • Jan

I am from Medicine Hat, glad you made it to Calgary safely. We have had an unbelievably wet year so the mosquitoes have been reaching zombie proportions!

  • Svetlana007

Dontcha guys worry about gas, you’re in Alberta, just dig in! (kidding). If you would’ve posted a short note on your site that you’re stuck not far from Calgary without gas we’d come and fill your car up guys, no worries ;-) We’re loyal bodyrockers here!!! :))) And yes, we do have hungry mosquitos here, that’s why a lot of stores are actually out of OFF! sprays right now (good thing I stocked up). Anyway, thank you for the video, it’s like watching a reality show, very fun and interesting! Hope you’re having great time! Can’t wait for the new workout!!!

  • Lauren

Zuzana, I love that top! What is it and where can I get one?!?!

    P.S.- I love Charlie, he’s so precious!

  • Michelle

Hi Zuzana and Freddy, wow your trip so far seems exhausting. I can’t believe tou guys slept in the car, it must have been really uncomfortable. I hope you enjoy your vacation as soon as you get to your destination. Keep us updated because I love your videos!! I feel like I know you guys!

  • Faye

You guys will enjoy the smoky air here…:(
Alberta has issued air quality warning as smoke drifts from B.C. fires…

  • Ewa

    Loved this!

  • Tanya

    Hi Frederick & Zuzana,
I totally agree with you about the audio books for the long road trip. My boyfriend and I have done the road trip from the prairies to Vancouver Island almost every year.(We currently live in Victoria on Vancouver Island.) We went through at least 10CDs each trip, and it really did make the trip shorter! I believe you guys must be coming through Trans-Canada Highway #1? You should check out the hot spring circle route to refresh after long day of driving :) Another route I would recommend is the Crowsnest Highway, the No. 3. It is probably the most scenic route I have ever been. Anyway, enjoy your drive and have a safe trip to Vancouver.

  • olla

U look The best with NO make-up on!!!! Z!!!
ohhh, sigh.., those eastern europe women have No concept that nature made u beautiful, so of coz u look beautiful when most natural…
well, it takes time, u need to spend i guess 5 – 7 years in the US/Canada to understand that and embrace no heavy make-up thing,( god knows i’m still trying myself :))
    Good Luck in your trip!!
p.s. so you arrive to your destination which is California, right??? then what? u gonna drive back home all that way??? or u taking it to Mexico???!! then Florida then up east coast , New York and back to Canada may i suggest??! :))

  • olla

sorry if i said it wrong, but i confuse east and west in english, hope you get what i ment!! :(( :-D

  • Kev

    Hey guys,

I have been following your travels for a while and trying some of your workouts…

I could have put you up in Calgary!

  • Gigi

Glad to hear you guys are well! Hubby and I have been doing similar treks since we have been together and also dragging a long the four legged pet children. It seemed to get more difficult when our daughter was born and we did a cross country (USA) from California to New York to Rhode Island. Lets just say our 15 month old daughter at the time was basically over it all around the 2nd day of the journey. She was normally a very calm and easy going kid who we took every where and now she was just not having it,sleeping and eating schedules were off, sleeping in unknown beds and not having too much time to toddle around and explore. We also had our vhehicle packed to the maxium, we look like a band of gypsies & every motel stop (thank goodness for Super 8) we had to unload baby gear and our stuff. Although that sounds all negative we wouldn’t change the experience we shared together or how beautiful our lands are you never would see via an airplane. Yet again we are soon on the road moving in the fall from South East (USA) back to the North Massachusetts. Our daughter is now 10 years old and has quite a bit of road trip experience now since we have moved more times since her first journey & we have a beagle, bird and turtles to take with us too. Getting any easier…..nope but when it is all said an done, the experiences we have shared as a family and many other things we would never trade it. Best wishes to you and your four legged babies!

  • Melissa

I hope you guys aren’t running into any trouble with heading through BC and all of the fires there right now. The smoke has drifted all the way into Saskatchewan now, I can’t imagine how thick it is being in BC. It makes me sad you won’t be able to see how gorgeous it is heading through because of all of the smoke! I can recall it being difficult to even breath, yet see the tops of the mountains when it’s like this.

    Stay safe!

  • Mickela

Great video, brought back memories of my boyfriend and I travelling from Alaska to Guatemala.

Meanwhile I have been doing my workouts. ran from Manhattan to Brooklyn via Williamsburg bridge to the park and did 20 pushups 30 prisoner squats 2 half assed pull ups and some dips. then I ran back home the run was 57:38 the rest I didn’t time. I am in great spirits.

keep us posted with your adventures.

love you 2 and the sweet doggies as well

Awww…good husband Freddie! You are right in saying Zuzana is beautiful, she’s a natural beauty! Her spirit is beautiful, and she shines (and so do you!)

Have y’all ever seen the movie “Stardust” with Claire Danes and Michelle Pfeiffer? In it Claire Danes plays an actual star fallen from the sky….blah blah blah, but the point is, she falls in love with a dude and when she thinks of him she shines! That is how we should appear when we think of the people we love. The way you all love each other is so refreshing and pure and sweet. Thank you for sharing your lives with us….your lives remind me of another movie title…”It’s a Wonderful Life!”

I am learning that one of the most important aspects of a healthy life (along with excersize and eating clean and brushing/flossing)is having healthy relationships…truly when you have a broken relationship with anyone, there is a shard or splinter of bitterness that gets into your spirit and like the analogy of an apple…”one bad apple spoils the bunch!” Eventually the tiny bitterness spoils the spirit of a person… LOVE is the greatest, like 1COR.13 defines Love by being patient and kind etc. The bottom line is that LOVE NEVER FAILS! (My pastor once told me to read that whole “Love chapter” and replace the word “Love” with my name and then read it again and replace the word “Love” with my husband’s name…that was hard to do since we were seperated at the time and headed for divorce. Our relationship was broken and so were we. But the WORD of GOD is Supernatural (It says so Itself!) and it has restored our marriage (along with so many other ingredients like prayer and actions and changing from bad decisions to good decisions).

    Blessings,
    Shawnie

P.S. Y’all are wonderful and a joy to follow online!

Blessings on this adventure and your travels. And may God continue to bless you both abundantly Spiritually and physically in health and life.

  • Lucka

    Hi Zuzana & Frederick,

What a fun adventure you two seem to have having. I just came across your website and workout videos and feel inspired to workout harder! I am wondering (because I don’t know the whole story of you two) why you always move and travel from place to place? Where did you two start off? In Praha?

Take care and have a safe drive across Canada.

    Lucka
    Ontario, Canada

  • Anna

Are you actually MOVING into Vancouver? MOVING? Again? Seriously guys?

  • TheVal

Those zombie mosquitos sound gross! Funny thing…my friends make fun of me for having zombie paranoia. It’s both funny and creepy but it’s one of my motivations for doing BodyRock workouts! lol

  • Josefine

It brings me such joy following you workouts, your travel videos, food, diet and fitness tips. Thanks for updating us on your trip!

  • Renee

My hometown is Calgary! I hope that you guys get a chance to visit the Rockies. The hiking at this time of the year is great, and depending on the trail you choose can be a pretty steep “walk” (more like a climb/clamber) and will kick your butt!

  • Lauri

Hey Frederik and Susanna, I think it’s great that you are posting these vlogs. I live in B.C. and I was surprised that after you guys left Canada to find to a better place to live, that you eventually returned to Ontario, cause B.C. has way better outdoor activities, and the scenic areas are beautiful and the air is way cleaner than in Ontario.

Hope you have a great vacation :)
ps. you probably heard this before, but you are such a cute couple :)

  • me_lissa

Now that you have been out west, you will have to come “down east” to Nova Scotia and the rest of the Maritimes to truly say that you have been across Canada. Lots of beautiful beaches and Moose Crossing signs ;o)

  • Rajah Kamillzyna

It’s called Intensive Inventions, not whatever I typo-ed. haha, so yeah, give it a go!

  • Jill

    Hi Zuzana!
I am so excited that Frederick and yourself have made your way to Canada! I just wanted to thank you both for being so inspirational and entertaining! I love your workouts, I love your recipies, and I love to watch you shop and travel! Great site, great couple. I have recommened it to many friends. Gookluck in life and love and enjoy beautiful British Columbia! (My other half is from B.C. as well so we are blessed to be able to visit a few times a year!)

I glad you made it safely to a gas station. It’s nice to see you in Canada. You should be hitting BC pretty soon, I hope you enjoy it.

  • Dennis

Hey, if you guys happen to be in the Vancouver area today, being Sat Aug 21 there is a fitness competition called Femsport thats probably completely up your alley! Anyhow, its taking place in Yaletown, a neighbourhood in the downtown part of Vancouver on the street. You guys should check it out. Its on all day I think.
All the best with your journey…

  • RN

    Hi Zuzana & Freddie,

Oh how I wish I could do that drive one day. May I make a suggestion? Since you guys are so into fitness, health and eating wholesome, nutritious food, I would think you’d be concerned about lifestyle choices that affect the environment as well. Most of us buy too many clothes and shoes, too many gadgets, to many things for our homes, which we really don’t use that much. I’ll bet most of us can easily get rid of 30% of the things we have without really missing the stuff that much. We need to take stock of our materialistic lifestyle and learn to live with less. Considering you guys travel so much, it makes even more sense to live with less. It would make your travelling so much easier, your life more organized (less things to manage) and your life so much more in tuned to the way you guys think if you had less ‘stuff’ to deal with.

  • Gaby

it is good to know what you guys are up to.. thank you for taking us with you on your trip :)
You look beautiful as always Zuzana even after a bad sleeping night and hours of travelling…
    Good luck in your trip..

    Hi Zuz & Freddy,

I am sure your marathon driving across Canada is over and you guys are getting settled into your new environment in Vancouver. Hopefully, the two of you are taking a much needed break.

I did two old routines from the archives workout. I’m happy that I get to do these old routines now for the first time. Those routines are still brutal, so I hope more bodyrockers get to check them out.

August 19: 20mins Cardio Workourt 5 videos (this took me 22mins)

Dang! I’m glad you guys made it!! There’s a rogue mosquito in my apartment now. He’s likely waiting for me to go to sleep. I can outlast him!

That is really cool what you guys do. I’d love to just do my own thing with me and my fiance’ and travel like you guys do. What do you two do for a living, if you don’t mind me asking??

  • Adrienne

    Hi guys,

Sounds like you’re having a great trip! THanks for taking us along for the ride. Question though..why are you rushing across Canada?? There are so many wonderful spots to see that 4 days just won’t do it justice! I used to do an annual trip with my parents every year, and we saw some amazing things!

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

I guess you can’t post links?

When you go south, you should really go see Fern Canyon in the redwood forest. It’s one of the best hikes you’ll see. It’s a creek, and the 20 foot walls are covered in ferns.

You wouldn’t belive how surprised i was when i saw that you are/were in Calgary, I’ve just came to CAlgary as well a couple of days ago to start a new chapter in my life, which by the way involves going back to school, and FINALLY, being part of a soccer team, which is where you guys came in, ’cause if it wasn’t for your killer workouts, i would have not be able to make it.

    Enjoy your trip!!

As someone originally from Alberta who’s done a roadtrip from Edmonton to Winnipeg several times, i would have to say while in rural Alberta and especially Saskatchewan, NEVER pass up on the opportunity to fill up your gas!!! The gas stations are far and few between and you never know when you’ll find another one… heh!
