Exercise Challenge – 1000 Jump Rope Jacks

Hi BodyRockers,
Today’s challenge is the first of a series of jump rope challenges that we will be doing this week in addition to our regular workouts. I hope you guys are excited about skipping because it is one of the best exercises for overall conditioning – plus as an added bonus it will improve your agility, co-ordination and endurance. BodyRockers want more for themselves than just to look pretty or handsome. The truth is there are a million physical challenges out there that you can face on any given day, and BodyRockers can handle them because we train for life.

my score for this challenge: 11 minutes and 15 seconds

Workout Breakdown

Time: ?min.Workout Type: Time ChallengeExercises: 1
  • Jump Rope Jacks1000 reps (each jump counts as 1 rep)

Get your gear for this workout here:

Instructions:

Jump Rope Jacks are basically Jumping Jacks with a Jump Rope. Set your interval timer as a stop watch and complete 1000 reps as fast as you can (each time your feet touch the ground counts as 1 rep). If you have never skipped with a jump rope before or it’s been some time since you have, then take this challenge as a skill training instead of racing to get it done. Don’t get yourself frustrated, take your time and learn the skill, because we are going to be using this amazing exercise tool a lot and not only during this week. Remember to keep your core tight, elbows close to your body,  chest up, and bend your knees slightly as you land to absorb the shock. Always land on the balls of your feet. It is recommended to wear cross training shoes with a good cushioning for your skipping.

okay I did this. i was tripping all over the place and really just wanted to do normal jumping jacks but I pushed through and did 1000 jump rope jacks in 20 minutes. Kind of slow but I blame it on my lack of coordination….

    Hey skippers,

Am I the only one consuming ropes so quickly? I only started taking my skipping seriously in about February and I already snapped 2.5 ropes by the beginning of May – I just realised that my 3rd rope has very little to go as well :-( . And only the first one of these ropes was cheap, the second was a highly reputable boxing brand. I don’t desire to keep spending on new ropes, so I looked into alternatives, and I’d like to share my findings, maybe others can make use of them too.

I came across a ropeless skipping rope which I thought was a bit odd (and too expensive) and mostly badly reviewed by customers / commenters. But it is an interesting concept to minimise rope depreciation. Being a tinker myself, after my third rope gives in (it’s a nylon one, the first one was some plasticy-rubbery rope, the second genuine leather), I’ll trim the two ends and tie some knots at each end for weight and see how that holds.

One thing the manufacturers of this ropeless product are correct at is that, once you do master the skipping, you don’t miss the tripping, so I’m happy to get rid of the middle part of the rope in the hope of cutting down my monthly expenditures of new ropes. We’ll see how it goes.

Also during my research I found this video that some of you mind find inspiring (I did):

You are all speed demons! This took me 19:53 but I was exhausted so I know I pushed myself. I’m going to try to beat my time next week.

it´s a good workout and i sweat so much.

  • KIMBERLAKE93

    1000 Jump Rope Jacks= 13:37
I kept tripping over the rope like a 5 year old (even though I do skipping DAILY). So halfway through, I got rid of the rope and completed the jumping jacks without it.

Hey ‘yall……….Thanks again to fellow BodyRocker Jos for the “Abs Now” find on youTube!!

This workout was BRU-TAL!! I am typing in a pool of my own sweat…WOWSERS!! I stopped half way through to catch my breath, have a sip of water and to text my girlfriend to tell her how brutal it really was. So thankful it’s over cause I feel much, much better! My time for this workout was 18:02.

    Good luck everyone!

  • Katie

You know, I started this challenge, and I am usually a badass ;) but today my knee was killing me in a sharp and wrong way. I think it was the side to side motion?? I’m going to look it up and get a knee brace (historically I have had trouble with this one). I went ahead and did alternate leg skipping (high knees) with the rope X 1000. I still got a good workout but didn’t hurt myself. If you know anything about knees let me know, otherwise I will just listen to my knee and probably get a brace and try this one again in a month. I don’t really have problems with any of the other workouts, but I notice that the day after a jump lunge day my knee hurts quite a bit more. Still it hasn’t stopped me til now. hmmm

For those who wants to do the actual workout, Zuzana posted the second abs workout of this week on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfBYsRJXerI

The instruction in the video is clear enough..most of the moves are pretty familiar for seasoned bodyrockers.

Here are the workout breakdowns (I made up some of the names that I didn’t know)
Finish the entire circuit as fast as possible while keeping proper forms
50 reps backward lunge with sandbag overhead press
    50 reps super girl plank
    50 reps sandbag squats
50 reps side knee tucks / reptile
    50 reps jump lunges
    50 reps santana plank
50 reps of 1 jump forward and 2 jump back
50 reps mini squats / pulse squats

I did it today and finished in 23:10 (using 15 lbs backpack in place of the sandbag)

            MapNa,

It would be SO nice to have your hubby do the workouts with you…I hear ya! Keep up the BODYROCKING and maybe one day he’ll join you!!
As for Tammy77 and I…..we are NOT a couple ahahahahahahahaha LOL but yes it’s amazing to have your bestie support you and be interested in the same challenges as you. She definitely pushes me and inspires me daily! She introduced me to this site and for that, I’m forever grateful!
Your hubby may not be into BR right now but please find comfort in knowing you have SO much support on here! CHEERS! :)

Nice work Jos – great time. This one really does look like a killer. Those 1 jump forward/2 jumps back always murder my quads!

Today Brutus almost kept me in my office, but I managed to overcome and did my 1000 jump rope jack in 11:40 + 500 high knee skips in 6:01 for 17 minutes and 41 sweaty seconds of exhausting fun.

I’m guessing maybe the kids had technical difficulties and will post Abs Now for tomorrow workout – either way, I’ll do it tomorrow and use your time as my motivation! :)

This really is the most enjoyable week I’ve done so far. Abs workouts are my favourites and I LOVE skipping.
I could have done a better time if I didn’t trip 6 times, but I’m still pretty happy with my result: 8:37

  • Mary Lou

    13:04
I also broke it down to 100 rep intervals and did about 6 sets without tripping up! Yay! I had to stop once to blow my nose and twice for a water break but all in all, the rope is getting easier, you just have to stick with it!

  • Dheana

I’m a bit confused – of course I’m also blonde, so it could just be me…;-) But on Youtube, the workout for April 27th is Abs Now. And here, it’s this challenge. Anyone else notice this?! …maybe I’ll do both! :)

    • http://delightfultastebuds.wordpress.com Jos

Yes I noticed it…so I did Abs Now Workout today (the instruction on the video was pretty clear..50 reps of each exercise and mostly are the ones we’ve done before).

  • Anonymous

I combined this workout with the 60 Get Ups. Whew! My jumping rope is getting better. I don’t think I’ve picked up a jump rope until I came across your site, so thank you for that! Lots of fun… once I get pass the “shins are on fire”!! :)

    1000 Jump Rope Jacks: 12:29
60 Get Ups: 11:02 <— will certainly work on this. Not happy about my time, but I'm keeping it real, so I'm posting it. :( I think I was concentrating too much on my "homemade sandbag" to make sure it wasn't going to knock me out!!! (I put some free weights into a backpack.) I requested the sandbag for Mother's Day, so I'm totally looking forward to that!!!! :)

    Happy day to all!!!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/FitMindy?feature=mhum Mindy McT

15:15. I’m still getting used to roping. Never did it until I started following these workouts which encouraged me to buy a rope :) I’m proud of my time :)

Since I’m not the best skipper yet, I chose for the option of just doing them instead of rushing. So I’m glad I made it to 1000!

  • ♥ Verena ♥

I did it in 07,59 Min. This song accompanied my challenge.

Morning everyone! I did the Sexiest Abs Workout from last August first this morning and beat my previous scores apart from one round so fairly chuffed about that, then I did my 1000 jumping jack skips straight after which took me 9:36.

We’re off on a bit of a family road trip to the coast then a pleasure park tomorrow – I don’t know about anyone else but the food part of trips away fills me with dread. In the UK there doesn’t seem to be much of a healthy choice of food when you’re out and about. I’ve stocked up on nuts, seeds, fruit and wholemeal crackers for the trip though.

Zuzana that skort you’re wearing is GORGEOUS! I bet I’m not the only one who wants to know where you purchased it….please…? Sx

pfft im completely hopeless at jumping jacks with rope – i keep getting my feet caught in the rope and i lost track of how many times i swore at it lol. So i ended up doing 500 and then for the last 500 i alternated feet together and jogging feet. My time was 20:27 (slow yep) and i added an extra 100 for my slow effort.

Altho i must say i can actually skip now where as before i would die after 5mins.

10 minutes 41 sec without jump rope. I did 500 jumping jacks & 500 low jacks.

  • Anonymous

    16:01.
Since I didn’t do a full 20 minutes after this morning’s workout, I decided to do this. I broke it into 100 rep intervals with ~ 10 sec rest between.

  • Annalise

I did this one today, Thursday 28th of April 2011. I only just figured out htat sometimes when I am waiting for a new workout to appear on the home page it may actually be listed on the ‘this week’ section.
I did 1000 in 12 mins, so reasonably close to Zuzana. Hooray.

Great solution to the ‘barefoot’ but thwacking your poor feet with the rope – Vibram 5Fingers. Those weird deck shoes. I’ve been BodyRocking in them for over a year, and can do it out outside and ‘barefoot’ without getting pelted and poked by little rocks and sharp pine needles! My overall balance and even ankle stability has improved since going shoe-less.

  • Goldie

gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah blah blah gah! I managed 1034 reps in 9mins and 35 seconds. It’s taken a lot of practise!

I owe it to you guys… you’re awesome!

    • Dheana

      Nice work Goldie! Very impressive!

  • Bella

I swear by the jump rope.
    Great post!

  • lchao

Yeah….i never like doing jump rope…but i did it cause my friend got 6:30 for 1000 and he even did the double under…..so i tried for the 1000 and finish it at 18 min…after a weekend of buffet. lol.

don’t feel bad your time at all. You can laugh at mine, though. it took me a couple of hours. Lol

    me too :P

    Hi Zuzana,

I completed this time challenge in 10:20 with a rope.

I just moved to a new apartment, and was 100 skips in when my downstairs neighbour came and rang the bell…sigh. My other neighbours had no problem, as it’s only 20 mins, and we didn’t do it when the family was home but…this one seems a little less friendly. I’m sure every body rocker here must have had an issue like this with neighbours. Has anyone found any effective methods in cooling them down and opening their minds a bit? If not I’m sure we can all pull together and find a protocol that works :-)

P.S. Zuzana I love your legs too! please show them off more!

    love to my bodyrockers-

22:54 This workout wasn’t as physically challenging as it was mechanically challenging. I haven’t used a jump rope in like 20 years and this was quite humbling. You’d think by jump number 1,000 I’d have mastered it, but. . . .wow. I guess practice makes perfect. I tried to work on form. . . and I did the jump I used to do when I was a kid. . . . jump over the rope, little hop, jump over the rope, little hop, etc. I’m gonna have to work up to straight jumps and then the jump jacks. And boy do you have to get that rope swinging fast to do straight jumps. I’m too scared!! Well, I haven’t sweated like this in the whole month I’ve been a bodyrocker. Thanks for some good cardio.

  • Kik

    Just finished in 11:02.

  • SameOne

    I love skipping :) my time – 10 minutes and 20 seconds and I feel great! :)

  • olivegoddess

14:00 min exactly and barefoot. Yeah!

Whew – 11:57. How do you measure a skipping rope properly? I kept tripping on it and think it may be too short?!

    I also, also agree :)

      hy sydney
im too a beginner (1week in) really unsporty…. i m really prowd to have don it 1000 times lol but i have to say at 500 i thought i was going to be death…lol then i pushed… with some breaks it took me 30 minutes
but most exersizes i cant do… but i wish i coeld lol

my problem is mostly that i start really vanatic but then after 3 months i skip sport again

I’ll tell you! Don’t be ashamed! We’ve all started and stalled and started again. No big deal!!! Just give yourself a break, do your best and be proud of being back on track. You have the best chance to stick with it when you start from a place of loving yourself and doing this as the ultimate in self care! Just keep at it, modify what you have to, try your best and you’ll get stronger and more fit in no time…and any time you need a pep talk – stop by here. This community is full of wonderful supportive people who are all on the same great path!

Oh, he he…I just realized you wrote that 4 months ago (blonde roots must be showing!) Oh well, I hope when you read this you’re 4 months in to an amazing path! :)

    • Dheana

Great attitude Sydney. I’m only a few months in to taking Bodyrock seriously, and I can tell you – those first few times with the skipping rope were just BRUTAL for me! Gasping, tripping, stumbling, sweating, swearing…! LOL It get’s better really quickly though – especially with such a positive outlook. Congratulations on your journey sista!

  • Pstania

    Hi Z&F
    My score is 10:14
    Thank you

  • TfromNI

Tried this challenge today. It took me a while to get myself coordinated but I think I’m doing it right. Was just a bit confused with how to count the reps. You had said every time your feet touch the ground its a rep. With every turn of the rope I do one jumping jack, out and in. Is that right? So is it two reps per one turn of the rope?

So far I’ve only been following your workouts for three days but really enjoying them. Keep posting!!

  • Nina_CZ

Oooooh maaan, I only did 500 Jumping Jacks in 13:24 and I am out of breath and having a crazy headrush :( My “breathing technique” needs some work :D I am so mad at myself that I didn’t do 1000 :( (( Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings :)

  • TB

So apparently I did not read fully how to count reps before doing this challenge…I counted each jack (out jump and in jump) as one rep…I completed the challenge in 15:00, but apparently did 2000 jumps!

  • Julia

What the hell??! Zuzana, what did you do during these last weeks? Your body has changed so much since a few months ago. Every day your body seems even more toned, muscular and lean. This is nothing else than stunning.

My suspicion: is it the meat ?

If this would be true, this would be very disappointing/frustrating for me… I’m 27 and a vegetarian since I was 14. And I could not imagine ever eating meat again. But nevertheless: a very serious goal in my life, is to achieve a body that comes close to what you are now.

It’s not that you haven’t had an amazing and gorgeous body when you were a vegetarian – but i find, it’s not comperable to what you look like, now.

Do you thinkg it would have been able to achieve these results while you were eating vegetarian? Or do vegetarians like me have to cut back our demands concerning what is achievable whit a meat-less diet?

Could you estimate how much of protein you eat per day?

Zuzana and Freddy: thank you so much for your inspiration you give to all of us!

But today I was faced with the problem. After practicing with a bag of sand in my terribly sore back and neck, every movement a pain.
It must be so, or am I doing something wrong?

Hello BodyRockers, I did this one tonight and I kept hitting my arms, hands, back , legs you name I was hitting it. So I did mostly the regular jumps to keep the bruising to a minimum. My time was 15:50:33. It was harder than I thought it was going to be and I got a great burn in my legs after. It was great.

Did the challenge twice… first 1000 in 8:31 and second time 8:26! :) Was tempted to do another but have a lot to do. Thanks so much! I am loving these!

    PS you look awesome!

ZUZANA! That bra is AMAZING! Where can I obtain such a thing?

  • Oneheckofawoman

Ok so I completed 1007 reps in 18 minutes 03 seconds. But I have to admit before I began I was afraid, so I opted for standard jumps insteads of jumping jacks. So I may not have played by the rules, but at least I played the game :o )

This is what I plan to do too, until I perfect the jumping rope jack!

  • Marilia

I love your skirt. I am probably going to kill mysefl with that skipping rope, but at least I will try my best. I wasn’t any good in skipping already in elementary school, so I guess now is time to change it :-) Thanks Zuzko for creating these challenges which force me to break my limits. I just love it :-)

umm. LOVE your striped bra! AMAZING! is it a workout bra??

I end up whipping my legs whenever I try using a skipping rope so tend to do rope free versions of the exercises.

I hurt my legs too all the time. To solve it you need to choose perfect floor and correct length of rope.

  • Anie

Zuzi, you should wear skirts and shorts more often, I love your legs!!!!!

I have been following your workouts for about 1 year now. I love your fitness concept of using your own body weight and working out at home. I really like the use of the jump rope
in addition to the workouts. Zuzanna you are in the best shape you have ever been! Keep up the great work. Tanya.

  • Verena

I love the “we train for life” thing… that should be our motto as bodyrockers for 2011 :D
Will do this tomorrow, (without a rope, but I am so curious about my time!!!) :)

    • Naffy

  • beth

what brand of jump rope do you use?

    • http://www.ourway2freedom.com Eva Ron

You can see which brand she is using after the “workout Breakdown” on the post.
You have there a place where it says “Get your gear for this workout here”
      Hope this helped!
      Good Luck! :)
