Sumo Squat Step Up Exercise Challenge

Hi BodyRockers,

The winter blahs were starting to get to us again today – and Freddy and I are starting to feel that stirring that starts to awaken when it’s time to start looking at moving. One of the most common questions that we get is “why do you guys move so much?” Freddy is Canadian and I am Czech so at first it was about moving between Canada and the Czech Republic so that we could experience and explore where each of us grew up. There has been a lot of back and forth between Canada and Czech, and we also lived in Malta last year for about 6 months. The truth is we just both really love traveling and exploring new places. We have a lot of things we share in common, but one of the core bonds we have is the belief that experiences count a lot more than physical things in life, so we make getting out and experiencing the sights, sounds and different tastes of the world a major priority whenever the chance arises. We both feel like we would like to settle into having our own home and then resume our travels from there, but we haven’t found a place that clicks with us yet and we are having a lot of fun trying different places. It’s going to happen sooner or later, but for now we are just enjoying the journey. Prague is feeling sub-artic lately, and although that is a huge exaggeration, I think that we have narrowed down our list of possible “home” destinations to places that are warm and sunny most of the year :)

On to today’s challenge…

Best,

Zuzana.

P.S. My score for this challenge is 18 minutes and 26 seconds. I wasn’t racing but I didn’t take any break what so ever. I kept going even tho I felt my muscles burning – it’s a little bit of a masochistic approach but I didn’t want this challenge to drag. Don’t forget to do your stretching. I do the same stretching routine each time and just from that I am able to do a split, so don’t skip that part.

Freddy here! OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Look out girls – my time was 15:42 – just call me MAVERICK cos I feel the need – the need for SPEED!

Workout Breakdown

Time: ?min.Workout Type: exercise challengeExercises: 1
  • Sumo Squat & Step Up100 reps on each leg

Get your gear for this workout here:

Instructions:

Start by standing with a chair next to your left leg and with your feet wide apart. Push your hips back while keeping your back straight and do a Sumo Squat. Try to get as low as you can. Beginners should try to get their thighs at least parallel to the ground just like you see it in the picture.

As you stand up, take a step to the left with your right foot to bring your legs closer together.

Step on the chair sideways with your left foot.

Step up and drive your right knee up.

Step down and get back into the starting position (the Sumo Squat). This is one rep. Complete 100 reps on each leg taking a break as you need to, but your goal is to complete this challenge as fast as you can.

    Hey guys!
I cant wait to do this one! I really love exercise challenges that target the legs and butt because I find it more difficult to get the kind of tone and definition that I have throughout the rest of my body… although I am seeing progress, thats for sure! Also, I know what you mean about wanting to explore until you find a place that feels right. Travelling is so exciting. Its hard to kick the bug once you’ve got it… and why would you anyways? I say keep on exploring… you have nothing to lose and so much to gain! There are so many beautiful places you two would thrive in. Why not experience them? Share with us some of the places you are thinking about! I am personally pleased with the recent mild temperatures gracing ontario. It is so nice to step outside with a t-shirt on! Im not holding my breath for it to last… but I think we’re nearing the end of winter here! I cant wait for the sunshine and summer days! *sigh*

  • http://twitter.com/#!/empowart Jessica

ps. zuz you look great! did you get a haircut?

  • Yashizzle

this looks like its going to painful can’t wait to try it out!

oh and you’re hair looks great, zuzanna! :)

  • AudraFit

Yes! I love training legs on Fridays, thanks Zuzana! By the way you should find a place that is sunny year round. There are no winter blahs here in Arizona yet, the heat can be extreme. But, I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else and for me that feeling is important. I can’t wait to see where you two decide on going to next :)

Move to Southern California :) that’s where I’m from and I am so home sick, esp. with all these snow storms we were hit with this past month. I Miss me some warmth…

  • Cindy Beverly

Nice to see you on I’m also from Ontario, where abouts are you. I live in Oakville.

the thing about winter is that it makes you appreciate summer even more! Otherwise you take it for granted!!

  • Kabgirl24

Hawaii is good place for year round sun and warmth. It rarely ever goes below 70 like maybe once a year. I moved here when I joined the Army. I met my husband here who also was brought here because of the Army. We are still here and enjoying it for as long as we can before the Army makes us move. I hope that we get a chance to tour in Europe at one point. Neither one of us has left the states except for Iraq and Kuwait. I am no longer serving but my husband is scheduled to go to Afghanistan next year…grr. Anyway cant wait to do the workout

  • http://twitter.com/Running_Fox Mary Housel

I think I’m going to cross-train with this tomorrow…Trying to get back into running shape, and have some SERIOUS work to do on my core, hips, butt, and abs! Thank you for you and Freddy’s hard work, dedication, and support! Hoping to be a BodyRocker hard-core as things get straightened out for me….it’s tough recovering from injury and inactivity…

  • Mrs Mel

    Come to Australia.
Thank you Zuzana, you are an inspiration.

I was able to finish this in 19 minutes and 26 seconds, a better time than I thought I would get. I think this challenge was quite fun. Now I’ll try to get my brother to do it and see if he can beat me. :-D

  • cs2010

Great quote I just found today and I wanted to share it:

Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.
    ~Maria Robinson

  • Heather

    LOL, Go Mav!

I think I’ll do this one tomorrow instead of the usual Tabatas (I work one day behind so that I can do the workout when the time presents itself. This is the first week I’ve done something EVERY day you do!!! I’m so STOKED! I’m starting to think I can SEE changes in the abs… not just feel ‘em! Go me!

I like to remember that although Zuzana and Freddy give us the information and inspiration – WE are the ones putting in the perspiration!!! Way to go bodyrockers everywhere! Keep up the awesome attitude and hard work!

Good luck finding a place that feels like ‘home’ guys… enjoy the exploration (I know you do) then when you find that special spot, it will be all the sweeter for everything you shared in getting there.

  • http://kenjibankhead.posterous.com/ ashtromanius

I’ve about had it with being sick. Fevers every day, congestion, coughing til almost puking and exhaustion… this has lasted 9 days…with NO change in how I feel. So, yesterday I said to HELL with it. I re-did the “bubble butt” workout and beat my time by 36 seconds, I also did attempt the dive bomber challenge (I think I got 10 in or so… which is WAY lame, I know). So, today I felt worse and felt really bugged that I am showing no signs of getting better. I took it easy today, and I only did 25 on each leg. I’m hoping that maybe by moving I will create an unfriendly environment for this nasty virus I’ve caught… Here’s to hoping…

Way to go to all you who finished 100%… I’m jealous, but proud of you!

  • AudraFit

Try to take it easy Ashtromanius ;) At least wait til your fever breaks. Your body is more focused on trying to kick the virus and don’t feel that way about yourself. Rest and you’ll get better faster k?

  • Yashizzle

florida is the best in terms of weather for sure. :)

  • http://twitter.com/FlaviaRequim Flavia Requim

    Ok, I did it! :)
It took me 14:30 minutes to complete the challenge, I could barelly believe that I could do this so quickly…
    *_* (eyes shinning!) heheheh
I added 10kg because I want to improve muscle in my legs, and get stronger, but it was ok to manage it.. ^^
After I did a little workout with abs work and skipping…. =)
It was 50 seconds work and 15 seconds rest and the total time was: 22 minutes
    1) Skipping (low jacks – I´m masterizing, lol): 66/73/73
    2)High Knees ( pull up bar): 20/21/22
    3)Skipping: 70/66/70
    4)Sit Up (10kg): 19/18/17
    4)Skipping: 59/66/55
    6)Side Bend (10kgs): R-28/L-28/R-27/L-27/R-28/L-28

Then I did 10 minutes of light stretching and it was all!!
Wanna say thanks for that great challenge!! and thanks to all friends that are supporting ourselves here! You all rock! ^^

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Maria-Lanier/100000216811315 Maria Lanier

Get well soon, ashtromanius… Once you feel better, you may do this challenge again and finish it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Maria-Lanier/100000216811315 Maria Lanier

Hey you beat Freddy!!!! You’re so fast… I’m gonna try to beat your time tomorrow. I’ll come back here to let you know. :P

Yes, I love all our support here. Thanks all!!! :-)

I broke my toe today, so now any pressure on my foot at all is agony, so I’m heavily modifying all your workouts so I can saty active while I recover. Like for this I’ll do the sumo sqat but instead of the step up I pick knee up. I was gutted when I realised I broke my toe, my first thoughs were “how on earth am I gonna workout on this!?” & “I’m gonna loose so much strength” but I’ll push through and hope that I can at least maintane what I have. :)

Todays my birthday and I’m a slice of lemon cheesecake as a post workout snack, but not the whole cake! ;)

  • Tania E Way-Garcia

Just finished with a time of 14:33 no break. I had to speed through while the boys were sitting quietly eating breakfast. I am DEAD!!!! OMG! How will I run this afternoon with hubby?

My inner thighs were so sore from yesterday’s Attacking Hot Warrior workout that I wasn’t sure how I’d finish this. To my surprise I finished in 14:56 with deep sumos, high knees and my chair is 17 inches tall. I feel great! Thanks for giving me that extra push Maverick!

I thought I posted yesterday but I have more trouble with my posts showing up. Anyway completed this morning in 18.5 minutes. At the halfway point I was on track to be right around your score Zuzana but when I switched legs I could really feel it. I vote for Phoenix Arizona, it is ALWAYS warm there.

Actually, I meant to say I added the sumo squat step exercise and dive
bombers to the Warrior Attack routine. I really liked the combination.

Have you tried Spain? I just moved from the Mediterranean coast to New Jersey and this winter has been horrible for me! The weather in the Valencia/Barcelona/Alicante area is wonderful. I miss sitting on my terrace and having coffee watching the sea and feeling the February sun on my face! I still have my home there but can not travel until I finish with my visa paperwork. :( Fortunately, two weeks ago I remembered your videos and I have been feeling better again. It’s like the sun came back to me in a certain way. Love your site!

Loved the challenge! Just can’t compete with anybody. Maybe in 5 years.
I did 100 reps on both legs without a break and finished dripping sweat like a rainfall in
    20:24 min.
Now one thing I have a problem with is: why I do I not feel much in the butt? There I have my fat reserve and need to get rid of. Help! Need an really cool exercise for burning the fat in the bun!
    Thanks for that great challenge!
    Rock on!

I did a 50 minute warm up hard hill run in one of my best times recently.
When I got the the halfway mark on these I realized I hadn’t set my stopwatch. (I did not go back to repeat. haha) I kept going non stop the whole way and got 8:12 for the second half with nice deeeep squats. I think the first part was the same sort of time. I am absolutely drenched…it is about 78 degrees and ridiculously humid. Very, very cold shower needed! This was an awesome morning workout and I feel super charged!

So, I really, honestly don’t want to bring ANYONE down, but I am completely devastated right now. I am struggling very much with the thought of having a glass of wine (something I haven`t had since New Years – (not that I had a problem)…it was the calories I was thinkning of and eating junk food.

I wrote to Freddy and Zuzanka a while ago explaining my personal feeling of being `stuck`at in the moment. Having lost my motivation for working out after being soooo dedicated for sooo long. I am almost 36 years old (in 3 wks) with 3 girls at home (13,10,8) with a very supportive and dedicated husband-father at home.

I`ve been in school for the past 3 and a half years for Nursing. I just found out that I unfortunately did not pass the CNO (College of Nurses) exam and missed by 7 questions..not only do I feel like a complete disappointment to (the closest people in my life – who have stuck by me, dealt with me when I`ve been most miserable-around paper due dates and exam times and have suppoerted me throughout this entire journey), but to myself. 3 AND A HALF YEARS!!!! – PART-TIME!! OMG! !! Learning how to study ALL over again, learning how to research and WRITE papers AGAIN….all while maintaining my role as a wife and an active mother of 3 young beautiful girls.

This is very difficult for me at the moment, but I am reaching out to my community…all you bodyrockers out there….Zuzanna and Freddy especially….pls help me stay on the right track. To go workout instead of getting sucked into the bad stuff. MY husdband has been UHMAZING…he did what any husband would do…comforted me, consoled me, encouraged me, supported me. Yet I still feel as though I need to reach out to you…because I`m really close to falling down…

    Sadly, Tammy77

Wow! I’m looking at everyone’s scores! Impressive! I guess Zuzana and I are the slow-pokes today. I thought I was killin’ it too. Oh well. 18:46. Meh.

  • Tereza_CZ

What a fine burn. I measured time for each leg – left leg 9:25, right leg 9:53, which makes 19:18 altogether. I had just a little pause in between to write down the time and have a sip of water. Then I somehow managed to boost my motivation and had another 20 minutes of interval skipping, what a feeling afterwards and well earned post-workout carbs:) I must say that some of the scores here are really shocking, especially those under 10 minutes, I can’t believe my eyes but well done to everyone finishing it – which is the original purpose;)

  • http://www.tzsports.com BodyRocker David

Tammy- Sometime life has a way of redirecting us onto paths we could never imagine. There’s a great book that you should pickup. It’s called “Do What You Are”, by Paul & Barbara Tieger. “A revolutionary way of finding the right job”. If it’s the right job you will know it and be awesome at it. The book has saved many of my friends. Hope it works for you:) Good Luck

I have to admit I wasn’t as intimidated by the step ups as I was in the beginning. I didn’t rush either, but I did 25 at a time, in the kitchen, on the ‘big’ chairs, with deep sumo’s all while cooking dinner. 21:47. Take that Brutus! I felt great and could’ve done 100 more if the stomach hadn’t said ‘sit down and eat!’

  • Yashizzle

16:16:66. i think i may have done a little over a 100 cuz i was blasting my music so loud that i lost count at one point. lol no harm done. :)

And you’re right, I do know in my head that going back to school after 15 +yrs was amazing, scary, brave and most of all challenging. So yes, I can say today (after 72 hours of being sad, disappointed, mad and completely pissed) that tomorrow I will get back on that horse and reflect on what I need to “get ‘er done”!

But most of all I am going to take Leslie-Anne’s advice and make the most sincere effort EVER to be the best “me”.

So thank you once again….I look forward to reading great things about your journey :)

    P.S….Btw I did have that glass of wine…maybe 3 actually..lol.

    BluWaveRyder…thank you.

I DO want it, and who knows..maybe you’re right. I could have over studied, over analyzed many things that particular day. I will rewrite in 2 months time and I’m not going to waste a single second of my time (except to workout with zuzanna) not reflecting and studying.

Not giving up, it’s not in my nature however, I usually default to the negative and need space to recoop. Anyhoo, thanks for reading and listening. It’s nice to know there’s people out there who actually read this stuff.

And btw I did have that glass of wine…3 to be exact…oh and a piece of pizza…lol

    Ciao

    Sara..thank you.
ALL hugs….even the sweaty ones are great so thx! lol I too, realize deep down that deciding to make the commitment of going back to school at the age of 32 is pretty amazing. Especially when I can count on my two hands how many times I wish I had it in me to say eff it…lol. But, then I’d think of my girls and what kind of mother/role model I want to be or if I did, what lesson would I be teaching them?

Anyway…I did cry..lots….and had a few drinks to numb the feelings…however they came rushing back just as quick. I’ve been quite busy since Friday (which is probably a good thing) and being a bartender (on the side) has allowed me to be out and social the last two nights. I didn’t have the time to think and/or feel sorry for myself. Now being Sunday, my thought process is…It is what it is…wasn’t meant to be at this moment in my life…and that’s ok. I believe god gives us all that we can handle in the moment that we’re presently in.

So, I am going to embrace the next 2 and a half months that I have to study, prepare and focus for my second chance at writing in May….I’m not going to let this (or brutus) define who I am…2nd times a charm maybe??

Thanks once again Sara…I appreciate you taking the time to read and reach out to me :)
Best of luck on your personal journey…

    Hey Stefy…
Thanks very much for raining me in lol…it’s been two days now and although I am still very disappointed I am going to be positive about this. Things will be better and I can’t wait to do the workout once my dinner has settled. I will take your advice and be strong!

    Hi Leslie-Anne

Thank you. Thank you for reading. Thank you for listening. Thank you for caring and thank you for your advice. I mean, I felt a wee bit better after talking to my husband and wollowing in some self pitty + red wine, but this? I’ve been away from my computer for the last couple of days and to come home and see that people have taken the time to read, relate and care enough to offer the simplest advice, support and encouragement has moved me to tears….

I love the idea of starting a reflective journal dedicated to “me”. When I started doing these bodyrock workouts I bought myself a calendar book so I could log my daily workouts and compare my PB scores. But, I think I’ll got get an empty book and try what you did. Taking the time for myself, writing my thoughts and reflecting on my days/weeks/months progress just makes sense in this process of making me a better me in addition to a better mother to my children and wife to my husband.

Since Friday, I’ve picked myself up again, dusted myself off and I am better today. I’ll start logging in my “me” journal today. Might even do 2 workouts since I skipped the weekend….feel like I have some catching up to do. In addition to dedicating the joural to myself, I will be including your name in the front as my inspiration.

Thanks again Leslie-Anne…once a complete stranger out there in this big world and now a friend:)
I also want to let you know that I am promising to make my 36th year a fabulous one!

    Chat soon girlfriend
P.S too bad about the steelers eh?? :(

    Hi Kate,

I am sorry to hear about your bad news. It must be awful and yet in your time of need, you take the time to reach out to me. That means a lot, especially since we are total strangers. I think that’s what has moved me the most. How we all have bonded. How we all care about eachother. This movement that Zuzanna and Freddy has created is simply U-H-M-A-Z-I-N-G! They must be so proud of what they have done and continue to do.
    I know I am.
Thanks once again and I hope you’ll be okay…..stay strong yourself girlfriend..

    Hey boys and girls…
So I just completed this challenge I’m dripping in sweat as we speak! My time was 18:29….not bad, 3 seconds off Z’s time! But, I’m telling you at 80 reps (for both legs) my legs started to feel like cement blocks!
Gonna have a little break and a post workout protein drink and then I think I’m gonna try the ‘Jump-Up-Knee-Hug-Power-Up” challenge…will post my score for that one in a wee bit

Wow, I didn’t do as bad as I thought! 17:23min.
I went outside today and ran for 10 min. before I tried the challenge. It was sunny, and lately its never sunny, so I had to take advantage. I did the challenge on a bench in the park and used my cell phone’s timer. Great challenge thank you bodyrock!

    Hey Zuzana,
Thanks for this workout, it’s the first time I actually manage to finish one totally!! I made it in 19min, breaks included. It was really nice, I can feel my legs burning, but I put “Rock this party” by Bob Sinclar and it totally pushed me to finish it, while I thought I would stop at 75 each leg. So you’re right, music pushes you to finish sometimes!! I’m really proud of myself for finally completing a workout!! I’ll definitely keep on trying hard and hopefully finish as many as possible!
Thanks for the inspiration, you are really motivating! I’ve never done much sport in my life but now I feel hooked to your website!!
