No one likes the feeling of chapped lips. They’re rough to the touch, uncomfortable to kiss with, create a bad habit of licking and, can lead to bloody cracks that painfully sting. But if you’re the type of person who can’t seem to avoid frequent chapping, then you ought to listen up to these helpful tips that may prevent you from getting them in the first place.

 

  1. Scrub away dead skin.
    “Exfoliating is a good first step against chapped lips,” explains Elizabeth Tanzi, MD, co-director of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery. Try getting rid of dry skin by brushing your lips with your toothbrush.
  2. Apply a tea bag. 
    Polyphenols, the antioxidant found in tea, can help to repair damaged skin cells as well as speed up the cell renewal. Try pressing a moistened black tea bag against your lips for 30 seconds 3 to 5 times a week.
  3. Olive oil it up.

    To help soothe, soften and lubricate your pucker, try rubbing on olive oil, a great anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and moisturizing option, 2 to 3 times a day.

  4. Break the habit of licking your lips. 
    Your saliva strips your lips of natural oils when you lick your lips, so try to avoid this common habit. To restore the moisture, try hypoallergenic moisturizers like almond oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax.
