Bad Breath

 

Many of us experience stinky breath in the morning. But some of us have this problem all day long. Bad breath around the clock is a more serious issue and something that is harder to deal with. The cause of your mouth-stench may surprise you. Researchers have found that excessive exercise and a strict diet can lead to smellier breath.

“Skipping breakfast could be another unpleasant breath trigger, as eating first thing helps stimulate saliva that has been depleted while we sleep – hence the term “morning breath.” says Dr. Luke Thornley, dentist for oral hygiene company CB12.

“If you’re following a low carbohydrate diet such as Atkins your body may be in a state of ketosis (a metabolic state where most of the body’s energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood) resulting in an unpleasant mouth odour.”

Dr. Luke recommends these three steps to curing bad breath: “See your dentist and make sure you don’t have any cavities they can hide in and build up. Make sure you plaque levels are low by using an electric toothbrush – which is like using a vacuum rather than a dustpan and brush. Thirdly, the amount of water you drink can affect your breath. Your saliva helps to fight bacteria and washes away plaque.”

Yellow Teeth

 

If you’re self-conscious about your smile, it might be because your teeth are looking a little stained lately. Yellowing teeth happens more severely in some people than others. Many factors contribute to a yellow smile.

“The stuff you eat and drink can stain the teeth and smoking is the worst. Anything that would stain a white T-shirt will stain your teeth.” reveals Dr. Uchenna Okoye, clinical director at London Smiling Dental Group. “Everyone thinks coffee is worse but it’s tea. If you leave tea in the cup for 20 minutes and then come back, the inside of the cup is really stained. People often don’t realise with herbal teas is what you see in your cup is what you’re doing to your teeth.”

Dr. Unchenna recommends using whitening strips to counteract the yellowing properties of these culprits. A whitening strip kit can be bought at your local drugstore and used each day to gradually brighten your smile. Other tricks include using 8 or so strawberries, mashing them and mixing them with baking soda to create a paste. Take a toothbrush and apply this paste onto your teeth. The absorbic acid in the fruit and the teeth-cleaning power of baking soda work together to polish and whiten naturally.

Hair Loss

 

The average woman loses 100 hairs a day, making shedding pretty normal. But excessive hair loss, thinning and balding is not normal and should be treated. Men also experience hair loss in the form of male pattern baldness, which affects countless males over 50. Female pattern baldness is also prevalent. But what about those who are affected by hair loss at a young age? Can their condition be treated?

According to experts, the process of hair loss can not be fixed, but it can be slowed down. One of the major causes of accelerated hair thinning and loss in women are certain hormonal birth control pills.

“These include pills containing Norethisterone, Levonorgestrel, Gestodene and Ethynodiol Diacetate with Microgynon one of the most popular brands.” says Anabel Kingsley, trichologist.  “This can be remedied by changing to a ‘less androgenic’ one such as Dianette or Yasmin which can actually help with hormonal hair fall, although speaking to your GP is obviously advisable.”

Another way to slow the hair loss process is to include lots of protein and iron in your daily diet. Many people who do not get enough of these nutrients regularly suffered side effects like shedding and thin, fragile hair. Eat lots of meats, grains, nuts and seeds, and green, leafy veggies.

Gas

 

If you suffer from excessive flatulence, chances are you haven’t talked about it with anyone. This embarrassing body problem can be remedied, so not to fear.

“Most people who complain about excessive gas do not actually produce more than average, they are just more aware of it. On average, people produce between 500ml and two litres daily, passing it via the rectum ten to 20 times a day.” says Dr. Martin Schurr, GP.

“Most of the bacteria in the large intestine are essential for health and have a role in digesting carbohydrates that are not fully digested by enzymes in the small intestine further up. One of the main culprits for gas production is a carbohydrate called raffinose, found in foods such as cabbage and broccoli.”

Dr. Martin advises people who think they may have a gas production problem to seek out a dietician. They can help develop a plan for an effective diet that doesn’t create digestive upsets. This is also advised for people who suffered from irritable bowel syndrome.

Sweating

 

Sweating is natural. It is the human body’s way of cooling off and releasing toxins. It’s actually very good for the skin. But sweating profusely can be annoying and lead to smelly body odour. Here is how to get a handle on persistent sweatiness.

“If you read medical books or ask a doctor you need two litres [of water] a day – and half of that comes through food. You have normal, healthy people who are eating well but because someone has told them they need water, they’re having four to five litres a day. Most people only need to drink a litre of water a day.” explains Professor Mark Whitley, consultant vascular surgeon. He adds that drinking over one litre might cause problems such as over-sweating.

Antidepressants and other medications can cause sweating, too. Stress is also a number one factor for feeling the heat. Professor Mark recommends seeing a doctor about the root causes of sweating. He also advises de-stress therapies, eating lots of protein and getting enough rest.

Body Odour

Body odour can come from excessive sweating, and can be the most embarrassing of all body quirks. It implies a lack of proper hygiene even though it may not even be the case.

Aprocine glands are responsible for producing body odour, and when bacteria comes into play, this mix can create one heck of a stink.

“When people say they sweat too much it can either be hyperhidrosis or bromhidrosis, which is the smelly stuff. Usually it’s one or the other but some people are unlucky enough to have both.” says Professor Mark.

Regular bathing, changing clothes, washing clothes and applying deodorant can help reduce the potency of B.O. Botox treatment has also become available for severe cases, but talk to your doctor before having this procedure done.

Incontinence

 

Half of all women suffer from this, but it is kept quiet. Bladder dysfunction has two main causes – overactive bladder and stress. Overactivity can cause increased urinary frequency and leaks when you cough, sneeze or laugh. Stress incontinence can also lead to leaks.

Cutting down on smoking and caffeinated drinks can help substantially with both cases. Exercise can also help to strengthen the bladder muscles. Kegel exercises are the best way to target these muscles. Try a routine for 6 to 12 weeks of daily kegels to improve pelvic floor strength and regain control. Magnesium is a supplement to add into your diet that also relieves the bladder of its frequent spasms.

In more severe cases, Botox injections have been shown to reduce the symptoms of bladder overactivity. Nerve stimulation therapy can also be useful, but consult your doctor beforehand.

Breakouts

 

Acne has often been thought to be caused by greasy, unclean skin. This simply is not true. Whether you wash and scrub vigorously or gently cleanse, acne can still surface. It happens when oils overproduce on the skin and lead to inflammation. Benzoyl peroxide is often recommended for the treatment of moderate to severe acne breakouts.

“You can also use topical antibiotics which can be prescribed by your GP.” says Dr Daron Seukeran, a consultant dermatologist at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesborough.

“The problem is, for some people with particularly bad acne, topical treatment isn’t enough and they need an antibiotic. With these, you are often taking them for four months to get the response that’s required which is why people sometimes give up but they shouldn’t. They don’t just beat the infection but are anti-inflammatory as well.”

Medication may be an option, but natural cures can also be effective. Alkaline-based apple cider vinegar can be applied to problem areas on the skin to kill off bacteria without over-drying. Honey masks can be made at home and help tighten, tone and fix blemishes. Lastly, tea tree oil has been proven to diminish the look of pimples and stop future breakouts from surfacing.

Dandruff

 

That little dust on the shoulders can be super embarrassing. Stress and over-washing cause the scalp to shed excessively. Hormone changes and diet can also play a role.

“It’s a highly embarrassing problem.” says Dr. Daron Seukeran. “But can be quite easily treated with a tar-based shampoo or the likes of Head and Shoulders are effective for some. In some patients it continues to persist and there’s more to it – like psoriasis, eczema and fungal conditions can contribute towards scaling. There are different over the counter shampoos that can help and are well worth a try. But if the problems persist, then visit your GP.”

Runny Nose

 

Do you have a runny nose in the summertime or when you’re not sick? A lot of people suffer from this condition. It is commonly caused by dust, pollen and other allergens.

“[Allergens] trigger swelling in the nasal passages and the production of excess mucus. As well as a runny nose with clear discharge, it can also cause sneezing, nasal congestion, or itching. Less common is chronic non-allergic rhinitis. People with this also have a constant runny nose, but there is no identifiable allergy causing the symptoms and usually no noticeable itching and sneezing. Here, the symptoms are brought on by irritation to the nasal passages.” says Dr. Schurr.

He recommends an antihistamine nasal spray that is available through prescription.

“Beclomethasone nasal spray, an over-the-counter treatment, might help – seek the advice of your pharmacist.”

Hair On Upper Lip

 

Many women suffer from excessive upper lip hair, resulting in body-negativity. It is a highly common problem that can be linked to PCOS, or Poly-Cystic Ovaries Syndrome.

“If excess hair is due to a hormonal imbalance, then it tends to occur in areas such as the chin, upper lip, sideburns, chest and inner thighs.” says Dr Davison. “These are areas of the skin that are more sensitive to testosterone. The hair is also likely to be coarse and dark. Many, if not most, GPs will take the problem seriously and refer to an endocrinologist if appropriate. Women should not be afraid to ask for a referral to a specialist.”

Smelly Feet

 

Foot stress can cause this stinky issue. It can also be the result of bacteria lurking in between your toes.

Anti-bacterial soaps can help stop this problem from occurring and cleanse the bacteria off your skin. Having a daily foot routine with moisturizing lotions, scrubbing and cleaning can relieve a lot of foot complaints.

It is important to look for signs of a fungal infection if foot odour comes on suddenly. If you have burning, itching and irritating skin, you should definitely contact your doctor!
