I’ve heard every excuse as to why people can’t train. Every excuse possible. But in all the years that I’ve been working to help people get in the best shape of their lives, these 8 excuses keep popping up. I know you’ve used them.  Be honest with me. Or better yet, admit it the one person who is going to keep tabs on your and hold you to your promises — yourself.


Excuse #1

“I think that I might be coming down with a cold.”

I hear this one a lot around this time of year. I get it. It’s cold. It’s damp. The weather is crap. Except studies have shown that training while you have a cold has zero effect on the intensity or duration of the cold. It might seem harder to train when you have a cold – but having a cold doesn’t actually make your workout harder to do. My advice is always to listen to your body. If you are legitimately sick then rest or scale it back. If you have a sniffle, it’s not an excuse to skip your training.

Excuse #2

“I don’t have time to exercise.”

We are all busy. We all have important responsibilities. We have BodyRockers who are single mothers working multiple jobs, balancing night school. I tend to push back pretty hard when I hear this one, because what you are really saying is that you – YOU – are not a priority in your own life. Put it this way – if you are the one that is busy taking care of the business of your life, how well is that going to go if you are tired, weak and run down? How successful are you going to feel in a body that you are not confident in? Why isn’t being the best version of yourself a major priority in your life?

Now you might push back at me – “easy coming from someone who’s job is to work out all day”. Except that I don’t workout all day. I work out once a day for between 12-20 minutes – just like I’m trying to get you to do. And I do my job well enough to have created workouts that will deliver results in less time than it takes you to watch an episode of Modern Family. If you have 20 minutes, I can train you. Excuse #3

“I’m too tired.”

Shake it off. Honestly. Unless you are seriously ill, you have the energy to move your body. Often when I push people on this excuse they get angry. Let’s be real. Your not too tired. You just don’t want to do it – and I get that. At least you are being honest with me now. But here is the thing. If you don’t care no one else will either. If you can’t be asked to move, then you don’t have a hope in hell of changing your body or anything else in your life. Period. So get angry – but realize it’s not me that you’re angry at. Get angry enough to break through your laziness. Let your anger fuel the change you want to make. Because I don’t believe that you don’t want to be in shape. I don’t believe that you don’t want to feel confident and alive in your body. I don’t believe that you don’t want to enjoy sex, sports, the outdoors, and everything else life has to offer – in a body that takes you the distance. Being here and alive is like winning the cosmic lottery. Saying “I’m too tired” to live it to the max is profoundly ungrateful. Get the f@ck up. Let me help you get started.


Excuse #4

“I don’t know how to get started.”

This can be a legit excuse – to  a point. You have to want to change your life enough to go out into the world and do the research. There are endless sites, articles and programs out there, all promising the world. When I discovered BodyRock, I was at home looking up new workouts that I could try. True story. “I don’t have any workout equipment.”

Excuse #6

“I don’t like going to the gym.”

Guess what? 99% of our community trains at home, in their living room. Laundry room also works. Basically any room in your house with enough room to stretch out your arms works. Wear what you want. Put your music on. You don’t have to go to the gym to get in the best shape of your life.


Excuse #7

“I feel stupid.”

Believe it or not, this is a very common excuse. People always feel uncomfortable when they start anything new. The best way to get over “feeling stupid” is to surround yourself with other people who are courageous enough not to allow those feelings to hold them back. That is the power of our community. Remember, we were all beginners at some point.


Excuse #8

“My friends & family won’t support me.”

This can be a tough one, and it’s something that I’ve seen hold a lot of women back. Here is the thing. You don’t need anyone’s permission to live an active, healthy lifestyle. You may not have people around you right now that understand or support that craving you feel inside your heart to be the best version of yourself possible. Maybe you’ve been teased or put down by the people that should actually be supporting you. Having access to people who have been through it, and have experienced these very same challenges and are thriving in spite of it will open your eyes to what is actually possible. Our community is full of people that have been through it, and they’ve gotten the support and motivation they needed to achieve the changes they were looking for.

On a personal level, there are days when I feel like sitting on my ass too. There are days when I could pull any of these excuses out and sink into the couch. It’s the community that keeps me going as well.

I show up for you guys, because you guys keep me going.

If you are feeling angry or frustrated about your weight or the shape you are in, chances are you are ready to have your excuses busted down.
