In this day in age, being in-the-know of what’s really in your every day products is important to your health and wellbeing. Even common products stashed in your gym bag can pose a threat. Here are 3 typical gym items you may want to take a second look at.

A yogi’s best friend – comfy, cushy and chemical based? Yoga mats are made with PVC which, according to Centers for Disease Control, is highly toxic. Breathing in too much of this chemical in Downward Dog can lead to respiratory problems, reproductive problems and liver damage.

The solution? Eco-friendly, non toxic yoga mats. Look for ones made from hemp, natural rubber or cotton and that are PVC free and lead free.

2) Deodorant 

 

A lot of mainstream underarm deodorants and antiperspirants are full of aluminium, parabens and triclosan. These chemicals can be carcinogenic with aluminum being linked to breast cancer. They can also cause allergies, skin irritation and possibly kidney damage.

The solution? Find deodorants labeled organic or all natural and double check the ingredients list to ensure no chemicals are included. You can also make your own deodorant with just coconut oil, shea butter and baking soda.

Have a trendy new sports bra or leggings that is supposedly odor-free? This type of apparel is woven with silver to prevent that post-workout funk. It sounds cool and very high-tech, but really those nano particles of silver rub off while you move and attach to your skin. This exposes you to high levels of metal without your knowledge. Metal can potentially damage your lungs, kidneys and liver.

The solution? Apparel that is naturally antimicrobial and made with materials such as bamboo, instead of silver.
