Todays Motivation:

The next time you see someone who is visibly old take a minute and look at them. Don’t stare creepily. Just take a look. Watch how slow they move, how deliberate their steps are. How stiff and frail their limbs are. Take all that in – then see yourself at that age. Feel your body wither. Stiffen. Slow down. It’s not a good feeling. It’s unpleasant to even imagine.
What if I took that old person and magically dropped them into their 35 year old body. Imagine if I took you at whatever age you are and put you in your 12 year old self. Imagine it! When I was 12 (I’m 39 now) I used to run across the football field behind the school, snow suit on, through the snow drifts screaming and yelling and laughing with my friends. Cardio? What? No – just running, diving, bending, breathing – MOVING – without limitation, with seemingly endless energy. You can probably remember something similar.
Movement and energy is freedom. It’s life. I don’t know how old you are right now, but I bet on some level you crave to reconnect with your own physicality in a way that makes you feel alive, fulfilled and joyful. When did this awesome state of being become exercise? When did it become work, something to schedule, something hated and avoided? When did we prefer a nap to the wind in our faces?
If I could make good on my magical ‘what if’ that old person would jump up and move. They would embrace the surge of endorphins that come from being physically active. They would take the stairs 2 at a time just because they could. They would be grateful to be alive in a body that could move. These workouts are tough, but they will shake you awake. They aren’t magic but they will reconnect you with something that has the power to fulfill you. They will take you back to the pure joy of movement and the kids we all once were. We all end up in the old person body – but let’s live each day to its max potential before that happens – feeling blessed for our time here. Nothing else, no gadget, pill or designer Jean will make you feel connected to this life like movement – and it’s free for you here every day. Let’s move our hearts together.
Feel your body moving and getting stronger. Let’s strive for movement together – not to be skinny, or to be sexy or to look like the two dimensional ‘beautiful people’ in our Instagram feeds. Let’s do it to celebrate life and to inspire that same gratitude in those we love.
