We constantly hear about all the things that cause cancer. From cigarettes to plastic bottles, too much sun exposure to processed foods, we read up, take note and try to keep in mind everything we do, everything we eat and everything we buy that might have an effect on our overall health. But there is something to be said for what can fight cancer as well, since it’s near impossible to truly know and avoid all of the things that can infect our bodies with this deadly disease.

“New studies have found that eating a plant-based diet, low alcohol consumption and maintaining a healthy body weight significantly reduces the risk for breast cancer,” explains Sarah Mirkin, RD a registered dietician and nutritionist. “Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are high in antioxidants and phytochemicals which protect the body from cancer growth. These foods are also anti-inflammatory, which reduces cancer risk.”

Here are seven cancer-fighting foods to add onto your grocery list.

1. Berries

“Berries are rich in ellagic acid, an antioxidant that destroy cancer causing substances and slow tumor growth,” explains DR. Mirkin.

2. Cruciferous Vegetables

Vegetables like broccoli, kale, cauliflower and Brussels Sprouts contain phytochemicals known as glucosinates that kickstart protective enzymes in the body that aid in fighting off cancer.

“These phytochemicals also shift estrogen metabolism so that it doesn’t drive breast cancer,” explains Mirkin.

3. Sweet potatoes

cancer-fighting foods

“Orange fruits and vegetables rich in beta-carotene, which is an antioxidant, may protect cell membranes from toxin damage and slow the growth of cancer cells,” explains Mirkin.

4. Apples

Apples are rich in antioxidants that work to fight free radicals that may cause cancer. The skin of this fruit in particular contains quercitin, which is an anti-inflammatory flavonoid that can not only help to fight breast cancer tumors, but also prevent them.

5. Fish

“Studies suggest inflammation is linked to breast cancer,” explains Mirkin. Fatty fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids that can lessen inflammation in the body.

6. Garlic

“Garlic’s active ingredients allicin and the enzyme allinase have strong antioxidant properties,” explains Mirkin.

7. Turmeric

“Turmeric has anti inflammatory properties and its active ingredient curcumin inhibits breast cancer growth,” explains Mirkin.
