10 Foods To Stop Eating Today!

May 05, 2015 3 min read

These foods will ruin your diet and your health! If you've been talking about eating healthier and doing nothing about it, time to get your sh*t together! Start by eliminating these 10 foods and you will never look back!

1. Processed Meats

A 2013 study published in BMC Medicine, researchers concluded that of 26,344 deaths studied, high consumption of processed meats was responsible for 3.3 percent of them. Processed meats are loaded with preservatives, sodium and nitrates which have been linked to cancer says Jim White, R.D., spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. And guess what else? Processed meat are not very high in protein which means those cold cuts you've been eating have very few redeeming qualities.

2. Margarine

Margarine spent years being billed as the healthy alternative to butter, but the trans fats it contains are far worse than the natural saturated fats you find in butter. If the label says '0 trans fats' it is likely an out and out lie. The Food and Drug Administration allows food manufacturers to label their food '0 trans fat' if they contain less than 0.5 grams per recommended serving. While you're pitching the margarine, check out the labels on any bakery items or frozen food as margarine may be an ingredient.

3. Sugary Cereal

High in sugar and low in nutrition, sugary cereals set you up for fat gain and a 3pm energy slump. To make matters worse, it is virtually impossible to eat only the recommended serving of cereal. For most brands, it is 3/4 of a cup which isn't even half a bowl! Most of us don't buy cereal in single serve packages so for breakfast you may be eating up to 5 servings or about 3 days worth of sugar.

4. Fast Food Burgers

Cheap food is made from cheap ingredients. In a study found in the Annals of Diagnostic Pathology, researchers studied 8 fast food brands and found that all of their burgers contained between 2.1 percent and 14.8 percent meat. Eek! The rest was made up of water, connective tissue, blood vessels, nerves, fat, cartilage, and in some, parasites. Yuck.

5. Donuts

We know by now to avoid refined grains, sugar and fried foods. Imagine the impact of a donut which falls into all three categories. On top of the massive amounts of sugar and fat, some donut manufacturers use nanoparticles such as titanium dioxide which is possibly carcinogenic in humans.

6. Microwave Popcorn

Microwave popcorn has very little working for it in the nutrition department. All of the trans fats it contains outweighs any of the benefits of its fiber. Some brands contain diacetyl containing butter flavouring. When inhaled, it can cause life threatening lung diseases like bronchiolitis obliterans (and it has in some popcorn plant workers). Some manufacturers have subbed out the diacetyl with other chemicals which experts are suggesting may be just as harmful. If you want popcorn, pop it yourself on the stove or in an air popper. Yeah, food made with chemicals. Doesn't sound like a good call.

7. Toaster Pastries

Toaster pastries are typically high in sugar and trans fats and low in protein and fiber. They are also seriously lacking in minerals and vitamins. Don't believe us, check the label. It is ludicrous that any food manufacturer can legally include so many unpronounceable chemical ingredients!

8. Blended Coffee Drinks

On it's own, coffee can be good for your but those blended varieties contain more sugar and fat than actual coffee. It is possible to consume more than a quarter of your daily calorie intake in a single drink. You are wasting calories on something that won't even fill you up. It also spikes your blood sugar and insulin which means an energy crash that will have you snacking 30 minutes later.

9. Bagels

All refined carbs are bad but perhaps one of the worst is the bagel. They are pretty much sugar in a bagel form and to top it off, they can be around 400 calories each. Add cream cheese and you're taking major diet trap.

10. Soda

Public enemy number one. With good reason. Soda puts you at an increased risk for weight gain, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. If that wasn't enough, a 2014 study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that drinking soda can age you as much as smoking a cigarette. Definitely something to consider. No more excuses. No more talking about eating right, time to dump these foods and get yourself healthy!
