10 Reasons to Start Using Apple Cider Vinegar Today

When I first started taking apple cider vinegar years (ACV) ago, it was because I heard it does wonders for my skin from the inside out. But as time went on and I looked more into it, I learned that there are a vast number of health benefits to this humble little bottle sitting in my pantry. 1. Kills Bacteria Apple cider vinegar has high concentrations of acetic acid, a potent antimicrobial known to kill certain types of bacteria. Some people use diluted ACV as a toner on their skin to help clear acne. I like increasing my ACV intake when I’m not feeling well, or gargling it when I have a sore throat, to help me get better naturally. 2. Blood sugar stabilizer Studies have shown that ACV has the ability to increase insulin sensitivity, thereby decreasing blood sugar levels— good news for everyone, including diabetics. 3. May help in weight loss Though permanent weight loss is due to lifestyle and diet changes (and not just a result of a single ingredient), ACV can play a part in helping those who are looking to shed some weight. Studies have shown that ACV has the ability to increase satiety, meaning that you will have feelings of fullness especially after high-carb meals, which can lead to overall fewer calories being eaten per day. 4. Improve heart health Animal studies have shown that ACV has the ability to improve heart health by reducing blood triglycerides, cholesterol and blood pressure. Though results from animal studies don’t always translate perfectly to humans, it is still worth a try (after asking your doctor if there are any interactions between ACV and any prescription drugs you may already be taking for these conditions, of course). 5. Cancer prevention Our bodies’ cells are made to thrive in a slightly alkaline environment. Cancer cells are known to create an acidic environment immediately surrounding them. ACV may help in preventing cancer by returning the pH surrounding these pre-cancerous cells to it’s baseline, slightly alkaline state. However, there is not enough scientific research to support the role ACV can have in cancer prevention at this time. 6.  Detoxification Drinking ACV can assist in removing toxins from the body, break up mucus and clear lymph nodes. IT also has the ability to promote circulation and detoxify the liver and kidneys, as well. 7. Alleviate sinuses infections, colds, and allergies Being an antibacterial, ACV has the potential to alleviate sinus infections. The potassium it contains helps break up mucus, which can help clear sinuses and chest to help you breathe a little easier during a cold and allergies. The malice acid contained within ACV is a strong antiviral, which may keep you from getting as many colds. 8. Digestive aid As unintuitive as it may sound, the acid in ACV can help correct low stomach acid, thereby reducing heartburn. It can also help in settling your stomach, as well as reducing intestinal spasms. 9. Decrease and prevent candida Since ACV helps your liver and kidneys maintain their function to maintain your body’s slightly alkaline state, it can in turn help prevent candida overgrowth. And though ACV alone won’t cure candida, it can help. 10. Increase energy levels The enzymes and potassium in ACV can give you the energy boost you need. Use it whenever you need a pick me up, or before a workout.
Getting funding for research projects that involve natural products is not always a top priority, and though some of these reasons have been scientifically backed, many of the benefits reported for ACV tend to be anecdotal. But just because there hasn’t been scientific research done to prove something doesn’t mean that the anecdotical evidence is not real for those people and is to be thrown out of the window. Try it out for yourself and see how adding apple cider vinegar to your daily life improves your overall well being. Make sure to buy organic apple cider vinegar with the ‘mother’ to get the maximum benefits. Start by diluting a tablespoon of ACV in a glass of water and slowly increase your intake.
