It’s a new year and a new crop of superfoods have emerged. What is a superfoods?
Superfood: A nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being.
So many of us are deficient in vitamins or minerals that we desperately need and superfoods are a great way to get everything our body needs. Superfoods are packed with antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins and minerals and by eating more superfoods you are less like to get sick.
Some common superfoods include blueberries, broccoli, kale, salmon, oats, chia seeds and many more. 2015 has brought along a new crop of superfoods and these new superfoods are what you should be eating in 2015. Although some of these foods have been around for thousands of years it has taken our society this long to figure out how beneficial they truly are.
Hot new Superfoods:
1. Dandelion Greens
Not just a weed any more, dandelion greens are the hot new green to use in salads due to being excellent sources of vitamins A, B, C and K. They also help detox your liver and contain fiber, calcium, magnesium and iron. They are a little bitter so you have to get used to the taste of these greens.
2. Ancient Grains (kaniwa (baby quinoa), teff and amarantha)
Move aside quinoa because some new superfood grains have come to town. These grains are an excellent source of amino acids and pack more protein than quinoa. These grains are also vegan and gluten-free so even if you have those dietary restrictions you can still enjoy these grains.
3. Sauerkraut and other fermented foods
Fermented foods aid in digestion and provide good bacteria to your stomach. Fermented foods also promote a healthy immune system because they are natural probiotics. Sauerkraut is also a good source of vitamin C.
4. Cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, brussel sprouts)
Kale’s heyday could be coming to an end because research shows cauliflower is an excellent source of vitamin C and helps the body detox high levels of estrogen using phytochemicals. Brussel sprouts on the other hand have many anti-cancer compounds and get rid of carcinogens.
5. Coconut Flour
Everything that comes from the coconut has turned out to be beneficial for our bodies. Now you can add yet another coconut item to that list with coconut flour. Coconut flour has the highest levels of protein and fiber compared to any other flour. It is also gluten-free and a great alternative to use in baking.
Now that you have been informed about the best new superfoods you have no excuse to become the healthiest version of yourself.
