Sometimes the only motivation that will get you through a workout is the idea of eating your favorite comfort food without the guilt. Other times, you're amped up for your morning routine and agree to supplement it with healthy yet satisfying foods. But what you need to know is that not all foods are created equal when it comes to your post-workout fuel. Are you making any of these mistakes?

You wait too long to eat after leaving the gym

If you're trying to lose weight, and think eating right after a workout might make you feel guilty, try to ditch that attitude. “Right now, your energy-depleted body is gasping for calories,” says Nancy Clark, R.D., a sports nutritionist in private practice outside Boston and author of Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook. Get your food in within 30 minutes of your exercise routine. This will ensure that your blood-sugar levels remain steady and fight off fatigue and hunger.

You re-hydrate with a sports drink

Unless you're an elite athlete who needs energy in the form of sugar, and in need of replenishing electrolytes, then you don't need to waste your money or your calories on a sports drink. “Use your thirst as a guide; drink as much water as you need to feel hydrated again, and don’t try to force yourself to drink a set amount,” Clark says.

You go overboard on the protein

“Protein is a great recovery nutrient that helps rebuild muscle torn during a workout, but your body can only use so much,” says Clark. Try to balance your protein by incorporating complex carbs, like whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables. These will provide you with steady energy that your body needs, while the protein works to repair your muscles.
