4 Foods That Burn Belly Fat

Are you looking to shed your belly? The secret to losing weight and keeping it off isn't calorie counting and fancy gimmicks. The secret is working with your body's natural hunger and sleep rhythms to curb cravings, boost energy and burn fat. Our daily habits throw these cycles out of whack leaving us with a constant flow of hunger hormones that leave us with cravings that are almost impossible to ignore. Getting a good night's sleep can help you lose weight while eating the right foods at the right time of day can satisfy your body's need for fuel. These 4 foods will help you sleep better, lose weight and burn more belly fat!

1. Fish

When you aren't getting enough omega-3s (which are common in fish), your pineal gland is thrown out of sync. Your pineal gland helps to regulate your nervous system and when it isn't working properly, it inhibits the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone. When you are deficient in omega-3s you don't sleep properly during deep rest periods and that can lead to late night snacking. Fish is also rich in protein which can satiate your appetite. And remember, your body burns more calories digesting protein than it does when you eat fat and carbs. And what's more, omega-3s help boost heart health and lower the risk of dementia.

2. Nuts

Nuts and other legumes are great sources of magnesium. Magnesium is a mood booster and eating more of it can help people sleep more peacefully through the night. In a 2010 study published in the journal Magnesium Research, 100 people over 51 with sleep troubles were divided up. One group was given 320 milligrams of magnesium a day for 7 weeks while the other received a placebo. The people taking the magnesium reported sleeping better. As a bonus, the women showed less of the dangerous inflammation (caused by a rogue reaction in the immune system) which is implicated in heart disease, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.

3. Milk

So, it appears milk might be your friend when it comes to losing belly fat. Researchers at the University of Alabama at Brimingham discovered that among a group of over 100 premenopausal women that belly fat was reduced in those who consumed the most calcium rich diets. For every 100 milligrams of calcium they consumed each day, they lost an inch of intra-abdominal fat. Intra-abdominal fat is the really ugly stuff tucked around your internal organs. It is linked to higher rates of cancer and heart disease. If you wake in the night with muscle cramps or soreness, calcium (along with magnesium) helps to relax muscle nerves and fibers.

4. Cherries

At bed time, munch on a few Montmorency cherries,  a plant based source of melatonin. There is no evidence that they will make you fall asleep but there is some to suggest that foods like these cherries (and bananas) help to boost melatonin in the body. Melatonin will not only help with sleep, it is an antioxidant and that too will help promote weightloss. Easy enough. What are you waiting for?
