4 Things No One Tells You About Blueberries

Blueberries have always been regarded as a super-food, but recently they have surpassed Kale as the leading food in health and weight-loss trends. So here are the top reasons to keep your pantry stocked with blueberries (or to grow your own blueberry bush).

1) They have excellent cardiovascular benefits:  Blueberries reduce the risk of heart disease and metabolic syndrome. A recent study performed on lab rats at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center shows that  rats fed a blueberry enriched powder had lower triglycerides  and cholesterol than their counterparts. Another Study at Harvard Medical School found that women who had at least 1.5 cups of blueberries per week were 34% less likely to have a heart attack related incident.

2) The blast visceral fat: The same researchers at Michigan found that blueberries can help burn stubborn belly fat by activating your "get-lean" genes.  After the same 90 day trial rats fed a blueberry enriched diet showed significantly reduced visceral fat than the control group.

3) Increased Mental Activity: Blueberries have the ability to slow the rate of cognitive decline due to age.  A study published in Annals of neurology suggests that eating blueberries can lower overall cognitive decline by 2.5 years in adults over the age of 70.

4) Keep Blood Sugar Level: Blueberries have a low sugar high fiber content and are great to keep energy levels up when you hit that 2pm slump.  Grab a handful plain or mix in with almond milk as an afternoon smoothie pick me up.
