6 Brilliant Ways To Turn Your Coffee Into Dessert!

Flavoured coffee can be a nice treat but when you actually stop to think about how that flavour got into that bag of coffee grounds, it might make you sick. In fact, most manufacturers don't actually have to disclose their process and so it is impossible to know what you are putting in your body. Your flavoured syrups at the local coffee shop aren't any better as they are loaded with sugar. Fortunately, Prevention has come to the rescue with clean and delicious ways to flavour your coffee without having to ingest chemicals or mass quantities of sugar. Have a look:

1. Cinnamon.

I do this one every single morning. Cinnamon helps to cut some of the bitterness from coffee and studies have shown it can also be useful in managing blood sugar. Add it to your ground coffee in a ratio of 2 Tbsp ground cinnamon to ¾ c ground coffee and brew as usual.

2. Vanilla.

Vanilla is low in calories but high in flavour. If you're making a whole pot, just stir in ½ tsp when the coffee is done brewing. If your just doing a single mug, add a few drops and try it out. If you need more, you can add more.

3. Chocolate.

Chocolate is the greatest, no? Place a 2 inch square of 72% dark chocolate at the bottom of the mug and then fill it with your hot coffee. Stir to melt and then enjoy!

4. Orange.

There are few things that brighten as well as a hit of citrus. Use a ratio of 1 Tbsp fresh grated orange zest to ½ c ground coffee and brew as usual. For a single cup, add a single strip of orange peel to your mug and let steep for a minute or two.

5. Coconut.

Coconut is perfect for iced coffee. All you need to do is toast shredded coconut, mix with ground coffee, add water, and let steep overnight before straining. Check out the how to's here.

6. Cardamom.

If you are a fan of chai tea, you know well the warm flavour of cardamom. It works just as well in coffee. Although not easy to find, you will get the best results from using the whole crushed cardamom pods. Brew coffee as usual, then add one crushed pod per cup of coffee and let steep until fragrant and flavourful. You can use ground cardamom, too. Just follow the instructions for ground cinnamon above. How do you give your coffee a flavour boost? For more delicious food ideas, check out the BodyRock Meal Plan!
