7-Minutes in HIIT Heaven: The Workout Routine You Have to Try
In a world where many of us are barely fitting in enough time to breathe, it's easy to use lack of time as an excuse for not getting a workout in. But the fitness industry has responded with a plethora of ways to incorporate short and effective routines to keep you fit and focused. One of the biggest phenomenons in the workout world is HIIT, high intensity interval training. Short and sweet, these routines pack a punch! And though your first few go-arounds may have you shaking your head at the word "burpee" they are an incredible way to get fit fast.
Before some people even try it out however, they're concerned that the short amount of time allotted for the workout seems like a waste. People are used to spending 2 hours in the gym, an hour at a cycling class, and 30 minutes or more going for a run. But recently, a study was published in the American College of Sports Medicine's Health and Fitness Journal which found that a few minutes of pushing it to your max can accomplish a lot in record time — even more than a traditional workout. We're talking a whopping total of 7 minutes.
The journal's interval workout consists of 12 exercises. Done at an intensity of eight on a scale of 10, they each last 30 seconds and have a 10-second break in between. The circuit can be repeated for a longer workout. Here are a handful of moves to incorporate.
1. Warm up with jumping jacks.
2. Get low with wall sits.
3. Power up with push-ups.
4. Work your core with crunches.
5. Tone your arms with tricep dips.
6. Get vertical with chair step-ups.
7. Work your booty with squats.
8. Tone all over with plank.
Are you a fan of the HIIT workouts? What benefits have you noticed?
