Coffee drinking can go from the occasional pick-me-up to a slight obsession. But when your health is in jeopardy, that's when it's time to take a closer look at your caffeine habits. While subtle coffee intake can improve your memory and neurological health, overdoing it on your favourite lattes and mochas can actually damage your body's functions. Think you might be reaching your limit? Check out these weird and scary signs that you're drinking way too much coffee.
#1 Heart Palpitations
"Caffeine is a stimulant that acts upon the central nervous system and can increase one's heart rate." says Nesochi Okeke-Igbokwe, M.D., M.S. "Those that drink too much caffeine may start to experience palpitations."
Slow down on the daily dose of caffeine if your heart is racing abnormally.
#2 Jitters and Tremors
These can appear as shaking, tremors, jitteriness and restlessness.
"Caffeine may trigger the release of certain hormones like adrenaline, which may make one feel restless and even have tremors." says Okeke-Igbokwe.

#3 Too Many Bathroom Visits
"Caffeine may act as a mild diuretic and stimulate frequent urination in some individuals." says Okeke-Igbokwe.
This can be more inconvenient than scary, but it can also mean nutrients aren't being properly absorbed into your system because fluids are moving so quickly through you.
#4 Tummy Troubles
"Caffeine may stimulate the gastrointestinal tract leading to stomach upset, nausea, and even diarrhea." says Okeke-Igbokwe.
Again, this can be inconvenient and bothersome. Coffee can wear away the lining of your stomach, causing more serious issues down the road.
If drinking your morning joe can cause you to become anxious and stressed rather than calm and refreshed, maybe switch to decaf or tea. Symptoms of anxiety can be exacerbated by excess caffeine.
The high acidic content in coffee can cause severe heartburn and indigestion in certain people. Talk to your doctor and lessen your intake to just a few ounces per day to see if this relieves the symptoms.
Coffee can wake us up, but it can also prevent us from catching our much-needed zzz's. Caffeine circulates in your body hours after you drink it and can keep you tossing and turning. Don't drink coffee too close to bedtime and try a camomile tea to soothe your restlessness.
