Airline Officially Announces it's Passenger Weigh-In Requirement
Uzbekistan Airways has made a decision to weigh each person prior to letting them board a plan. They have announced that each person will need to stand on a scale with their luggage after checking in.
The company is based in Tashkent, and they made a promise to not reveal anyone’s weight. However, it could mean that some overweight individuals could be turned away from a busy flight, especially on smaller planes if limits are exceeded.
There will be special scales that will be set up in the departure gate zone to weigh each person, as well as their hand luggage. The passengers will be placed into three categories – children, women, and men.
The company mentioned that they will need to know the weights of both people, as well as their luggage as it is important with the smaller planes.
The air plane company made a statement as follows, “Uzbekistan Airways airline is carrying out the procedure of pre-flight weighing in order to determine the average weight of passengers with hand luggage.”
Airlines are obliged to maintain these regular procedures for pre-flight control, even weighing each passenger with their hand luggage. They are allowed to do this to ensure their safety requirements are met for each flight.
After the passing of a check-in for the flight and before boarding the aircraft, the company will ask each person to pass the weighing requirement with a special scale. The results will be confidential.
Samoan Air was the world’s first airline to charge a passenger based on their weight, and this was in 2013. This process helped manage the on-board weight efficiently and helped enable the costs.
Passengers will be able to add their luggage weight, and there will be no additional fees with extra baggage.
Samoan Air flies American Samoa, as well as domestically and it could possibly encourage other airlines to make the same requirements regarding weight.
