Amp Up Your Diet with These 10 Superfoods
According to nutrition experts, these are the top 10 superfoods to add to your diet this year. How many of them have you heard of or would be willing to try?
1. UV Exposed Mushrooms
A non-animal food source, high in vitamin D, which has been linked to lower rates of depression and stronger immune systems. Look for whole mushrooms or mushroom powder that has been exposed to UV lighting.
2. Amaranth
This ancient grain is high in fiber, antioxidents, and B-Vitamins. Substitute in the morning for your typical bowl of oatmeal.
3. Maca
This plant, which is small and round and looks a little like a turnip, is rich in amino acids, phytonutrients, and a number of vitamins and minerals. Maca also aids adrenal function, meaning it can pump up your energy levels while reducing stress. Powdered maca may be easier to find and add to your diet.
4. Mustard or Collard Greens
These dark leafy greens are a great source of vitamin C and potassium. Great addition or substitution for kale salad or blended into a smoothie.
5. Root Vegetables
In addition to sweet potatoes, parsnips, turnips, and rutabaga—are easy to find, easy to prepare, and offer lots of folate, as well as vitamins A and C. In addition to this, studies have found root vegetables, like beets, boost blood flow to the brain.
6. Sacha Inchi
Sacha inchi is a seed containing more omega 3's than any other. Eat it whole or pressed as an oil.
7. Lucuma
This unique, tropical fruit has a low glycemic index and is a great source of antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Eat it plain or blended into a smoothie.
8. Camu Camu
One of the world's most potent sources of vitamin C, camu camu is often sold as a powder. It contains healthy carotenoids as well as anthocyanin, which have been linked to disease prevention.
9. Heirloom Apples
Branch out from your trusty Granny Smiths and Galas. There are hundreds of varieties of organic “heirloom” apples that are increasingly common at farmers’ markets and high-end health food stores. They’ll cost you a bit more, but you’ll be rewarded with new and exciting flavors, not to mention lots of soluble fiber, vitamin C, and a wider variety of antioxidants.
10. Pichuberry
Another non-animal source of vitamin D, pichuberry contains phytochemicals called “withanolides." Experts have linked withanolides to slower cancer cell growth and lower levels of inflammation.
