The Anti-Fit Mom
Two post-baby body pictures have gone viral: Maria Kang, dubbed the “Fit Mom” with her “no excuse” attitude, and Taryn Brumfitt, a slightly more realistic body type for a mother of three.
I want to give credit where credit is due, Maria King looks absolutely amazing, and it would take a lot of willpower and effort to get the body she has, so kudos to her. She has however, quite accurately, been accused of fat hating, in her arrogant view that if only you believed in yourself and put in the effort you could look just like her, that every woman who hasn’t gotten back their post baby body just lacks willpower.
Motivation is one thing, there are several fit mommy bodyrockers who have shared their journey and continue to impress and inspire other women with their fitness journey. Blindly ignoring other life factors, and forcing an ideal on someone rather than acceptance is quite another thing.
Taryn Brumfitt, a previously jacked body builder from Australia has quickly become the anti-fit mom. Giving birth not only changed her body, but it had a huge impact on her self-esteem as well. Unable to get her post-baby body back she considered getting a tummy tuck and a boob job, until she realized what effect this would have on her children. She thought to herself “how can I teach my beautiful daughter to love herself, if I can’t do the same”.
With her change of heart she posted an unconventional before and after photo, and has started a kickstarter campaign for a documentary on improving body image, entitled “Embrace”. Being a huge documentary fan, and huge body image positivity fan, I think you know where I stand on this.
