Artist Turns Skin Condition Into Beauty

December 06, 2013 1 min read

Ariana Page Russell has a hypersensitive skin condition called dermatographia in which her immune system releases excessive amounts of histamine. If you scratch her skin, her capillaries will dilate and welts appear for about 30 minutes.A friend of mine had this condition growing up. People would often play tic-tac-toe on her arms and think it was hilarious. What wasn't so funny was things like putting on makeup would cause her whole face to turn red and welt. As a 13-year-old girl, I'm sure you can imagine how hard that was on her self esteem. But for Ariana, she's turned her condition into her artistic expression. She describes the body as "an index of passing time and human experience, and skin as the organ that visually reflects this transience." Sometimes we can find incredible strength and inspiration in our weaknesses - we just have to look hard enough.
