Asexuality: Understanding A Life Without Sex

It is estimated that 1% of the population identify as asexual. This means they have a very low sexual desire or absolutely no sexual desire. They live a life independent from the realm of sexual behaviour and lustful thinking. A high percentage of asexual people are female, and their varying degrees of desire are complex. Many asexual people shy away from masturbation or anything of that nature, while others show a slight interest. Some asexual people never wish to be romantically connected to another person, while others have found themselves in non-sexual relationships. Living in a very sexualized world, the concept of dating and even marrying without any sexual contact seems pretty impossible. But when you unwrap what a relationship entails, you can uncover how sex can actually be a very small part of the bigger picture. “I never got why everyone so desperately wanted a boyfriend or girlfriend. And all the public displays of affection would gross me out and make me feel really uncomfortable,” says Caitlin McCreary, a woman who began to realize her asexual identity in high school. Caitlin fell in love and became engaged to a man who is not asexual. Family members tried to convince Caitlin that her marriage would fall apart without sex, or would not even be considered legal. Despite the fears of onlookers, she and her fiancé have built a strong, committed and understanding bond. “I am very lucky to have such a very sweet and understanding fiancé,” Caitlin explains. Understanding asexuality can help us better understand ourselves and how deeply immersed sex has become in our society. What are your thoughts on this topic?
