Attention Chocolate Lovers!

chocolate-c74c3b5dd57919c22e32ecf4ec301609b5f705cb-s6-c30Chocolate has long been called the food of the Gods! Chocolate affects the brain by causing the release of certain neurotransmitters, which can trigger feel-good emotions like euphoria and promotes a positive outlook. Cacao beans, the origin of chocolate, are also very nutrient dense! It is a wonderful source of antioxidants, minerals and essential fats. Who knew chocolate could be so good for you!? Here's whats up: Antioxidant Power
  • In the ORAC rating (antioxidant capacity) raw cocoa powder is at the top of the antioxidant chart with almost four times the amount of antioxidants as Goji Berries.
Essential Minerals
  • Cacao beans are rich in a number of essential minerals, including magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, potassium and manganese.
  • Magnesium: Cacao seems to be the #1 source of magnesium of any food. Magnesium balances brain chemistry, builds strong bones, and helps regulate heartbeat and blood pressure.
  • Sulphur: Cacao is high in the beauty mineral sulphur. Sulphur builds strong nails and hair, promotes beautiful skin, detoxifies the liver, and supports healthy pancreas functioning.
Healthy Fats
  • Cacao contains oleic acid, a heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, also found in olive oil, that may raise good cholesterol.
Now, like most things, not all chocolate is made the same. Commercial varieties have been mass-produced and as a result the quality and nutritional benefits suffer. To get the maximum benefit from your chocolate treats, it is best to eat it as close to its natural form as possible. Cacao beans, nibs and powder are available in most health food stores but be sure to buy dark, organic, raw and fair-trade! Another pitfall of conventional cocao is that next to cotton, it is usually the most heavily sprayed product, purchasing organic will help to safeguard you against those harmful toxins. Next time you are at your health food store look for products with the least amount of processing, sweetners and other additives. If you sit quietly, you can actually experience the feel-good benefits after eating it!   Click here to check out more from Gillian
