Let's face it, exercise is not just great for your muscles, it's also great for your skin. According to WebMD "By increasing blood flow, exercise helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital." But, the exercise that increases our blood flow also makes us sweat, and that sweat can cause breakouts. If you're like me (and a lot of other people), and you suffer from workout induced acne, I'm about to change your life. I'm going to tell you how to banish those breakouts once and for all! The first thing is to make sure you shower as soon as possible after working out. When you get in the shower, apply a benzoyl peroxide (BP) wash to affected areas and let it sit while you wash your hair, shave etc. Your final step before you get out of the shower is to wash the BP off. Then, apply a salicylic acid (BHA) cream, gel, or liquid to affected areas, then continue on with your regular skin care routine. The reason I suggest a BP wash in the shower is to save your towels and pillow cases from getting bleached. I have found that a wash left on in the shower is just as effective as a leave on cream, but saves me from having to replace my towels and pillowcases. Why does this routine work? The BP kills off the bacteria, and the BHA exfoliates down into the pore to clear out blockages. The BHA also helps to smooth out the shape of the pore helping to prevent future blockages. This routine works not only on facial acne, but also on body acne. If you have very severe acne, you can check with your dermatologist about prescription creams to give you a boost in the beginning, and then once your acne is under control you can maintain your clear skin with the routine here.
My favorite BP and BHA products are these:
- Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask
- Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Gel Exfoliant
