Jezebel recently shared the story of Harnaam Kaur, 23 year old teaching assistant in the UK, who has polycystic ovary syndrome, and as a result has been sprouting facial hair since age 11. This story of body positivity has its low points, Harnaam was bullied mercilessly, practiced self-harm, and even had thoughts of suicide, but the story does have a happy ending. After bleaching, waxing, and shaving to little affect, she decided to embrace the beard as part of who she is. A large part of that came from her decision to be baptized as a sikh when she was 16, one of the tenents of the religion being that hair must be allowed to grow. At 23 now, she says that she feels just as feminine with the beard, possibly even more so. After sharing her story she’s had insults, even death threats, but she’s also had positive comments, and a marriage proposal! I’m not surprised by the haters, I’m definitely disappointed, but not surprised. I’m also not surprised by the marriage proposal though, there’s something inherently beautiful in just being yourself, and Harnaam Kaur has definitely tapped into that.
