The "Belly Button Challenge" Needs To Stop Already!
It has gone viral lately and you've probably seen it but if you haven't, here's the deal. The Belly Button Challenge is a 'test' to see if you need to lose weight. You simply reach your arm around your back and see if you can touch your belly button. It is believed to have started online in China but thanks to the power of social media, it has spread all over the globe.
Cosmopolitan spoke to a weight loss specialist to see if this challenge had any validity. Charlie Seltzer, M.D. said, "If you can touch your belly button from behind your back, you could be in better shape than someone who can't — but you shouldn't have a false sense of security about your health. You might have a small waist and look healthy, but your blood work could show that you're just as unhealthy as someone who weighs 400 pounds."
You're trying it right now, aren't you? I tried it. I'm not even close. I DO actually have weight to lose but that is probably not the only reason it didn't work. Arm length and flexibility may also play a part. Not being able to do it does not mean necessarily that you need to lose weight just as being able to do it does not mean you are fit.
It is time we stop using these silly tests and challenges to determine whether or not we 'look right' because that's really what this is about. This is a test of something completely external that has nothing to do with your actual health or fitness. Ignore it! You don't have to look any particular way. Continue on your own journey, belly button be damned.
