Could These Dangerous Substances Be Inside YOUR Tampon?

November 16, 2015 1 min read

Putting food inside our bodies requires being mindful (for the most part) of its ingredients. We try to stir clear of gluten, chemical preservatives, fake colouring and GMOs. So why is it any different for other things we put inside of us, like tampons? As consumers we have a tendency to trust hygiene products without giving it a second thought, but at what risk? chemicals inside products Not all tampons are created equal. Some have traces of pesticides and pesticides have been linked to many medical complications. Uteran cancer, cervical cancer, neurodegenerative disorders and reproductive disorders are to name a few of the diseases that longterm pesticide exposure may cause. Furthermore, the bleaching process leaves dioxin inside tampons which is a chemical linked to skin problems and immune system weakening. Added fragrances can cause allergic reactions and irritation. [bctt tweet="Could These Dangerous Substances Be Inside YOUR Tampon?"] Often, tampons and sanitary pads are not required to list the full range of ingredients on their packaging. This means companies can get away with using toxic chemicals in their products without consumer knowledge. Some companies like Proctor and Gamble are attempting to improve the information they put out to the public, but we are a long way away from getting a full understanding. Finding a good quality, low risk tampon can be more challenging but it is worth it to preserve your health. Look for 100% cotton products which are fragrance free and contain no dyes or synthetic chemicals. What are tips you have for buying natural period products? Share them with us!
