Dale Hansen Says What We Are All Thinking About Michael Sam

So Michael Sam is a fresh faced, talented NFL prospect who was the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year in his senior year playing for the Missouri Tigers. He is also gay. Which surprise, surprise, is causing major public fuss. Analysts are saying that being the first openly gay NFL player will hurt him in the draft picks, because him being gay might be too distracting and “weird players out” in the locker room. Thankfully there are public media personalities like Dallas sportscaster Dale Hansen who can publicly address what most of us sensible people are thinking. “Oh he’s gay?… So what?” Hansen, through a rousing speech, points out that we have never had a problem with how players have violently and obscenely acted in their own homes in the past. That murderers, rapists and drug addicts have still been A-OK with the public and has never hurt their draft standings. Oh, but if a player loves a member of the same sex, now we have a problem. If you haven’t seen it, you can check the video out below. Hansen cleverly highlights who is on the loosing end of this debate by referencing how it wasn’t too long ago that letting African-Americans join seemed like an uncomfortable idea. He quotes Audre Lorde in saying…
It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.
I too hope we can eventually move past this uncomfortable shuffling in our seats whenever there is a “first openly gay” anything, and just focus on the strengths, and achievements of an individual. Regardless, we should celebrate Michael Sam, and even Dale Hansen for their bold choices in a sometimes bitter and closed minded world.
