In Defense of the Selfie: Paulina Gretzky

November 12, 2013 2 min read

Daily Mail article here. article-2492803-194A701D00000578-85_634x837 'Social media is supposed to be for fun' : Newly-engaged Paulina Gretzky hits back at selfie criticism as she poses on Maxim cover. Paulina Gretzky is famous for being the daughter of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, but now she is officially stepping into the spotlight in her own right - as a Maxim model. On Thursday, the 24-year-old, who is known for her penchant for sharing sexy selfies on Instagram, offered her 234,000 followers a rare professionally-shot photo of herself on the magazine cover. In the image, she strikes a pose in a revealing white bikini, black stilettos and black fingerless gloves, with a bright yellow sportscar in the background. A caption reads: 'The Great One's daughter is puckin' hot!' Miss Gretzky - who got engaged to pro-golfer Dustin Johnson in August - captioned the image: 'Go to Maxim.com & check out my December Cover issue!! Thanks @maximmag'. Other photos from the spread show her just as scantily clad in various bikinis. In the magazine interview, she responds to criticism that she shares too-racy selfies a little too often. 'Some people gave me such a hard time for posting all these swimsuit pics on Twitter,' she says.  'I feel like social media is supposed to be for fun, to share what you're doing when you're enjoying life.
'I'm sorry; I'm not posting pictures of myself when I'm reading a book'
'I don't take the time to think, OK, should I post the photo that has my boobs in it or the one where I'm in a turtleneck?' While the bulk of Miss Gretzky's followers are likely men, in August she announced she is officially off the market, sharing a snap of herself and Mr Johnson kissing while she showed off her diamond ring. She wrote in an accompanying caption: 'Never been happier.'   While I'm glad she's happy, is this really a solid defense for the selfie, or just a flimsy excuse for her own vanity?
